We moved to Hockessin about a year ago. Great Wall is one of closest Chinese takeout restaurants. Our first order, the food was just so-so. Not terrible, but not great either. We continued to try others in the area. Tonight we stopped there on the way home from a visit to Maryland. It was more convenient than others. This time it was just terrible. My wife ordered the Sesame Chicken combo. She received General Tso's Chicken with sesame seeds on top. Since she can't eat spicy food, this was kind of useless to her. I ordered the Chicken with Cashews combo. It was simply bland. No flavor at all. The Fired Crab Meat Cheese Wontons were over-cooked as were the egg rolls. Needless to say, we won't be ordering from here ever again, even if it is too convenient. read more

Next to WaWa... I got shrimp lo mein and a shrimp and broccoli. This food was floating in grease, and it tasted like it was sitting in MOTHBALLS!!! The shrimp Lo mein combo had fried rice with pork.. l don't eat pork. And, my shrimp in the shrimp and broccoli were ORANGE in color, covered in a weird sauce. The bag l removed my food from was soaked in grease, and there was still an enormous amount of grease in the container. This was the worst Chinese food l have ever tasted, and it was completely inedible. The food was not fresh, it did not smell good, and the few bites l took tasted odd, like mothballs. Over the years this has been our favorite spot to get Chinese food. Stopping here several times a month to pick up a quick yummy dinner. I am not sure what has happened, new management, inflation or what. The food quality is now horrid and no longer edible. The recipes have changed, the food has changed and for the worse. Poor customer service! Was very disappointed with Great Wall today. They forgot my Wonton Soup on an order I placed. I had to go & pick it up. Then they gave me a small when I payed for a large, should have checked before I left but I didn't. I called & they said I could come pick up the large. I said no, I'm not driving back again. The past 3 orders at Great Wall, I ask for additional of one of the side sauces. I get more of the other 2 sauces I did not request & less of the sauce I do request. Found a shard of metal in my meal. This is a poorly run restaurant. I highly recommend that you avoid it if you value your own health and safety. I can excuse the occasionally messed up order that necessitates a return trip to get what I paid for; I know nobody is perfect. I can excuse an occasional bug in a meal; I know nobody is perfect. It's inexcusable to find a metal shard from a grill brush in my combo meal. This could have easily resulted in me owing tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills if this had punctured my stomach or esophagus. I ended up ordering delivery from this place and it's ok food, one thing that compelled me to write something is when I received my food that day, I noticed that my debit card number (along with the CVV code on the back) was written on the included menu. Just wanted to warn others who are thinking about ordering from this place, best to keep your eyes peel for stuff like that. Ordered Door Dash From Great Wall last night. About 10 minutes after I placed order door dash went down and was down for hour and a half. Prior to Door Dash going down dasher was not assigned to pick up order. When Door Dash came back up dasher was assigned to order went to store and had to wait for order. When order was delivered it was hot and fresh. The Dasher apologized for the wait he said he had to wait for Great Wall to remake the order. Great Job Great Wall you could of just sent out order that had been sitting there like I read online many other restaurants did but you had pride in your product and made sure it was fresh and hot before you sent it out. I don't want to say the food is garbage because they do make a good Shrimp Egg Foo Young. But, other than that the food is really really bad. The Shrimp with Black Bean Sauce has a sauce that looks like thin dark Ketchup and has maybe just maybe a hint of the flavor of Black Bean Sauce in it (heck I think I even saw one black bean in it - at least I hope that's what that was). I actually had to add the sauce to it ( yes, I had some Black Bean Sauce in my fridge for use in some other recipes). But, while I was mixing it I decided NO. I actually paid a Chinese Restaurant to make it. I got so angry about it I threw it in the garbage. The Pepper Steak had the same red sauce. Not kidding Pepper Steak with a red thin ketchup like sauce. I have never seen such a thing. Not sure if they even know about the brown gravy world (oh yea they do if you order egg foo young). The Shrimp Chow Mein was shrimp and cabbage - yep that's it shrimp & cabbage. To say I will never order from this place again is an understatement. I know Delaware can be a food dessert but I also know there are much better places to get Chinese food from. So, do yourself a favor and order food from one of these other places. I ordered take-out from post mates... when I opened up my order when it arrived it was all wrong.... I ordered shrimp chow mien (which everyone knows includes noodles) well this did not. what I received was shrimp and cabbage in a thick sauce with white rice. next up was crab ragoons. on the post mates site it says an order of 8 I only received 6. next was the spring rolls. I ordered 2 orders of rolls and only received one! next was hot a sour soup which had tofu in it, ive been ordering hot and sour for years and ive never had tofu in my soup.. next was Wong tong soup.... you guys see where im going here. nothing in my order was correct. it was my first and last time at this place. the reason I will never go back to this place is because the next day when I called to let them know about my order the guy that answered the phone yelled at me and said it was my fault my food was wrong and I was just trying to get FREE FOOD!!! I've ordered from here many times over the last year. Mainly due to convenience. The food is fair. In my opinion customer service is poor. I very rarely leave reviews. In this case I wanted to share my experiences. They are very fast paced, and will hang up on you before you can fully complete your order. I've had the delivery guy ask me for an extra tip more than once. I typically order the same thing each time. The most recent time I ordered I was told it would be $1.00 to make my food spicier. I was never charged extra for this before and explained that I have made this order many times before. The lady became very frustrated and asked me did I want it or not. I just simply responded "No thank you, have a great day" It's unfortunate considering I gave them business quite frequently. Customer service is very is important to me. Good not great. As far as convenience goes, This place has been here forever and is a minute from my house. Plus there are plenty of people working and the service is ok, but not super friendly. Also, it was easily 120 degrees in there. I had to go outside out of fear of becoming a heat casualty. I don't know why I gave a tip-- maybe my tithe for the week. Generals Chicken was a bit soggy. I have been getting food here for nearly 20 years. in the last few years, there is an obvious change in the staff and the quality. Today I wanted my daughter to try a "better" orange chicken than the "fast food" version she has enjoyed. MISTAKE. It really is the last straw. We got the Orange Chicken and General Tso's, it was overcooked to the point of chewing for 5 minutes and making no progress. The flavor was non-existent in the General Tso's, I have loved it from them in the past, with peppers and sauce, but not today. We got fried dumplings, but the flavor was lacking, the same for the fried rice. The egg rolls were ok but overcooked. I called and let them know, and the response was "We will make it better next time" to which I replied, "It was a waste of $37.00, I doubt there will be a next time." Panda Express would have been more reliable and reasonably priced. My child is completely shut off from trying a Chinese Restaurant now, sad. Now to throw out the rest of the food.
