All was going well and I returned the car to the Minneapolis St Paul airport as stated on my rental return by following the traffic signs for rental car return at the airport. Later that day I received an invoice from Dollar stating I'd been charged a total of $147 - or an excess of $60 from what was agreed upon!! Countless calls and hours were then spent on the phone with "customer service" (what service???) and unmet promises to have a supervisor call me back resulted in no resolutions. They even hung up on me 3 times! The line to the supervisor rang for 10 minutes before someone picked up and hung up the line. Truly awful! Now I'm out $60 plus valuable time. Please do yourself a favor and don't rent from here. A few more dollars spent with a reputable company will save you money and hours of time in the long run.

As I saw the huge line at the Counter (of which no other car rental places had), it was definitely a "Groundhog Day" moment, including snotty "we don't really give a shit" counter service. Once at the counter, they asked me to take a seat as they had no cars left to rent. That brought back a clear memory from the old Seinfeld Episode: The Car Reservation: "You see, you know how to *take* the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation." That was confirmed again when a guy on the Avis Customer Service line (that I called to escalate) reminded me of contract language implying that they were under no obligation to rent me a car if they ran out and that I was basically screwed. The same guy then suggested that I drive around (with what?) metro Des Moines to see if they had any cars. I took that idea to the front desk who indicated that those offices were out of cars too! The front desk did eventually offer me a pickup truck, one of those huge GMC models that can't fit in most parking spots or driveways. I got into this tank and immediately went back in and returned the keys. My only option at that point was to wait for maybe 45 minutes until a return came in. On the positive side, the Mazda rental was a decent car to drive and the guy checking me in at the Return lot was pleasant to deal with. I do have my gasoline station receipt handy, just in case Avis tries to pull a repeat "you didn't gas up and we're going to charge you a lot for it" trick. If you look at my Yelp profile, my 1 Star Reviews are far and few between, and are usually reserved for the "worst of the worst". Congratulations Avis and it appears that at least a few other reviews on this page agree. Lesson Learned: Stick with Alamo/Enterprise at DSM.

There was only 1 person ahead of me in line, so the wait was relatively short. I had a pleasant experience with the teller when I made it clear that I would like to decline all additional options, no muss no fuss. Returning the car was easy too, I arrived early in the morning when there was nobody working at the counter yet, so I just recorded the miles on the odometer on the return form they provide and dropped it off with the keys in the secure box on the counter and was on my merry way. Still had $0 of additional charges at the end of the trip, price remained the same as my original reservation price online, no hidden fees. Thanks for a low hassle experience

The moment my husband got out of the car, she jumped in right next to me while I'm still trying to gather my items and starts turning on the car and collecting all her data for the return. At this moment while she was invading my space, she would have noticed that we had a full tank of gas. When we landed for our layover, we were ecstatic to notice a $60 charge for gasoline! On top of this charge, we were also taxed a convenience fee since they had to pretend to fill the tank with gas. After spending our layover calling Alamo, we were able to have the gas refunded, but the guy on the phone was unable to refund or explain the reasoning for the other fee. More phone calls for us to make in the middle of stressful travel. The new shuttle experience at the DSM Airport is also a disaster & don't expect to find anyone running the Alamo desk, you'll wait 20 minutes to even speak with anyone when you arrive to pick up your car. Highly suggest not renting with Alamo, but if you do have to, take pictures, keep receipts and keep an eye out for their scams.
