So far I'm 0 for 3 when it comes to finding restaurants in the Boston area. I guess I must have very different taste than the folks that live there. That's cool, but I don't get the fascination with The Wok. I was so excited by the excellent reviews, and even more so, the heart healthy options. When we sat down, I was even more excited by the lunch options. A LOT of food for $7. I got egg drop soup, an egg roll, my choice of rice or lo mein and shrimp with cashew nuts. Woo hoo! The egg drop soup was ok, but unfortunately, that was the highlight. The lo mein was bland, the shrimp with cashew nuts lacked flavor and the egg roll was WAY too gingery. They should have called it a ginger roll instead. It also had these strange neon pink chunks inside. I couldn't eat it. I just don't get it, I've been to about a million Chinese restaurants and all of them are pretty good. This one was not. At all. Add that to the fact that our server barely spoke two words to us and never came back after he took our order and you've got an anticlimactic lunch. read more

For a Chinese restaurant, the service is so fast, and the servers aren't that rude. First I need to point out that The Wok has a great seating lay out. I was expecting a typical Chinese restaurant but my expectations were exceeded. The staff was very friendly. I've never had peking duck before and my boyfriend had been trying for a while to get me to try it. I was not disappointing. The peking duck came already cut in pieces and it was fun to put together in the wrap with plum sauce and cucumber. Chinese food is hard to make authentic and honestly when I saw the slew of Americanized Chinese dishes in only English on the menu, my very Chinese family and I braced ourselves for the worst. But honestly, it wasn't bad and we'd come back. The dishes were tasty and came out fast. Some were better than others as with most restaurants, but nothing that prevented us from finishing off our plates. The waitress was tentative and she seemed super concerned with if we enjoyed our meal or not. She refilled our tea and waters multiple times without prompting which was nice. Items I have ordered: hot and sour soup, peking steamed pork ravioli, beef with broccoli, ma pao tofu, corn chowder, moo shu chicken, crispy lemon chicken. The Wok is my go-to place when I'm at work and have a hankering for Chinese at lunch. I always order the steamed peking pork ravioli and hot and sour soup. The soup, while good, is not as spicy or as sour as I would like it to be - doesn't really have a punch. The ravioli, or dumplings, on the other hand, are simply delicious, and the gingery scallion soy sauce they give you to dip the ravioli dumplings in is divine - much much better than some other restaurants. The lunch tab usually runs around $9 - not terribly expensive, but not so cheap that I would do it more than once a week. As for the other items, the ma pao tofu was OK, beef with broccoli a little greasy, same with the moo shu. The crispy lemon chicken was pretty crispy but the lemon sauce was almost too lemony - too astringent - to be palatable. The corn chowder, while not necessarily a Chinese food item, was pretty good. All in all, stick with the basics, and you're good to go. I will keep returning to the Wok. read more

Absolutely best Chinese food. Everything juicy and flavorful. The staff is outstanding and friendly. We came with our toddler and the staff was playful with him. How can anyone mess up KungPao chicken? I guess if you add more water chestnuts than chicken, you've got yourself a disappointing career as a chef. I was craving spicy food and so I requested to make the dish VERY SPICY( confirmed that before I hung up) (honestly, I made her repeat what I just ordered, and it was only one thing that I ordered, I wanted to hear her say, SPICY!!) I went to pick up my order and before I touched the to go bag and claimed that it is mine, I confirmed, " IS THIS SPICY?" she says, YES, it is very spicy. She also says ' I HAVE GIVEN YOU EXTRA SPICY OIL"... oh boy was it a terrible tasting dish for a price that does not include rice. This place was middle of the road for me. They did accommodate a big group from my office in advance - so bonus points for that. They were also pretty attentive but kind of pushy at times, and I mean literally pushing people out of their way in their seats to get plates or get by instead of a simple excuse me. The apps were decent, what you would expect from any Chinese food, but their General Tsu's (sorry about spelling, I'm in no mood to look it up) left something to be desired. Seriously it tasted like it came out of the frozen food section of the Stop and Shop. There was ZERO spice to it, instead it wick sickly and sticky sweet - the glaze congealing into something that I couldn't take more than a bite out of. Their drinks were okay, but the embellishments they on were a bit much: basically a fruit salad on top, with an umbrella, and a crazy straw with some kind of santa lantern attached. Menu is authentic but not overly exotic and staff is always friendly and welcoming. Pretty good place. I've driven by here many times, and not realized there was a restaurant here. I just saw the rug place next to it. Decor-wise, it won't win any awards. Same with ambiance. It looks like most other Chinese restaurants out there. English did not seem to be most of the staff's forte. We asked a question of someone cleaning tables, and they knew enough English to say the server would be over shortly. Not really a knock, more an FYI. Food-wise, it was decent. I ordered the crispy beef as spicy as they would make, and my wife ordered vegetarian moo shi, and we split some white rice. My beef actually had enough spice to it that I could taste it, unlike most other restaurants which make it white-guy spicy, which is to say not very. My wife thought the moo shi was fine. As a note, entrees do not come with rice, and I found the prices a bit higher than I would expect for the amount of food given. Additionally, most of the food is gluten-free, which is always nice. I really don't see why the high reviews. I came here tonight with my family. The service was typical Chinese restaurant of waitress tossing the plates and utensils at you. I was expecting more because of the white table clothes, hoping for better than average. We ordered chicken lo mein, sizzling shrimp tomato soup and the healthy chicken and vegetables. The lo mein and chicken and vegetable was very average. The soup was awful. It was a bowl of ketchup with warm water and small shrimp. I couldn't have more than a bite. I really enjoy their food but this is about service. Placed a pick up order online and it stated that it would be ready in 20 minutes. My husband has been waiting outside the restaurant for more than an hour after the pick up time. I'm happy that they're busy but they should not be continuing to take orders when they are swamped. I used to go to the Wok in the 80's and remember loving the Szechuan chicken. I got food for my son and myself today. I hate to give poor review but was sooooo disappointed. We go regularly to Dragon Chef in Needham. I ordered all the same things here: Orange chicken. pork Peking ravioli, beef teriyaki and scallion pancake. Sooo disappointed. $40.00 later and throwing most of it away (ordered to go). Maybe other dishes are better. Even the white boiled rice was a far lesser quality. Probably one of the BEST Chinese food in the area. The staff is incredible and the food is equally amazing. I think I order from here at least once a week, but hey, a girl's gotta have her Asian food. I also got all my friends HOOKED on this place and we love coming here for lunch. Staff: The staff is amazing, especially Carol. From the first day I went to there, I was greeted with nothing but smiles. I call them my aunts and uncles. They know which dorm I live in, which dorm I work in, and where I study at. Food: I absolutely love the Hong Kong Style Noodles. For $12 or so, you can have amazing crunchy noodles, chicken, shrimp, & beef. They give you a huge portion and if you do delivery, the noodles will still be crunchy by the time you get it. I also love the combination platters. My boyfriend constantly orders the General Gau's chicken with fried rice, spring rolls, and hot & sour soup. My personal favorite is the sesame beef combination. By far, my favorite Chinese food. I've been coming here since I was a kid, so maybe I'm biased but it's just SO damn good. And QUICK too. If you're doing takeout, it'll always be ready within 10 minutes. And if you eat there, they're just as quick. The chicken peking ravioli are out of this world. Whenever I go out for Asian food, I always get dumplings of some kind, and these are by far the best. Get them pan-fried, not steamed. My other go-to's here: Scallion pancakes, Crispy Spicy Chicken, and Chicken with Cashews. Growing up on homecooked Chinese food, I'm used to just accepting the mediocre Chinese restaurants around Massachusetts. But The Wok is really great; the only regret I have is not trying it sooner! I'm a college student in the area so I've ordered quite a bit of takeout with my friends from The Wok. They've given us extra soup for free, and when we asked for extra fortune cookies they literally gave us a bag of 30 cookies. Plus, they accept credit cards over the phone, and they deliver in the time frame they say they're going to. The service is efficient and really great. The first waitress I got here was really personable, funny, and attentive. The second waiter was less talkative but still good, and he even gave my mom a free box of authentic Chinese green tea when we ate there on Mother's Day weekend. The tofu dishes are delicious, and my mouth is watering just thinking about the Hong Kong style noodles (which they let me substitute tofu for the meat since I'm vegetarian). And they don't use MSG, which I think is great! After reading some of the bad reviews on the food, it might be the more American style dishes that aren't up to par. But if you try the more authentic food, then you're set. Also, the portions are plentiful! Overall: Good-sized portions, no MSG, tasty food, good service. read more

The Wok is still the best Szechuan, Hunan and Hong Kong cuisine on the west side of Boston. I've been returning there since 1978 whenever I have the chance. The once famous Chinese Julia Child of Chinese cooking on PBS and restaurant owner Joyce Chen taught Hon Pui her unique style of cooking and Carol Chan welcomes you with a smile and runs the front and the dining room to make sure everyone is well satisfied and happy that they had dined here. Some of my favorites at the Wok are Peking duck, moo shu pork, hot and sour soup, and Peking Ravioli. The only down side I miss all the great waitresses from the 80's and 90's that Carol Chan use to have and wished they had dim sum on Sundays. read more

The Wok is definately in the upper echelon of chinese food in this area. You can tell that they put more attention to the details in preparation than 95% of other chinese restaurants, to get this just right. Their pork dumplings are the best I've ever tasted anywhere. Their lunch platters are a great value. Their hot and sour soup is also they best I've ever tasted, with a wonderful spicy sour taste I've never had in any other hot and sour soup. The shrimp with lobster sauce is very good, as are their boneless spare ribs. I love their ginger dipping sauce, and always ask for some if I've getting chicken fingers or spring rolls. I think they also have a hot sauce you can ask for (maybe it's teh same taste in their hot and sour soup? I haven't asked for it myself). Their mu shu is top notch. Their lo Mein is also the best I ever tasted, with a dark color from sauces and flavorings. The only thing I've gotten which I didnt like was their orange flavor beef. It was nothing like what they serve at other places. It was not even crispy. So be aware of that. They always have a tantalizing list of specials on the blackboard as you walk in. They always sound mouth watering, but are more expensive, and I try to stick with the lower priced items, so I've never ordered items from that blackboard (or whiteboard actually I think). Also, generally, the beef and shrimp they use are of very high quality, fresh and tender, as are the vegetables. read more

My husband and I ate at The Wok two evenings ago and are still suffering stomach distress which came on shortly after being there. We have made a formal report to the Wellesley Board of Health. While we were at the restaurant, I noticed that my chicken with lemon dish did not have much of the lemon taste and that the chicken was very hard and truly unpalatable. This dish is one I have had in a number of Asian restaurants and it is always very tasty. It seemed as if the chicken had been cooked a previous time and that they heated it up for my dish. It was the worst Asian meal I ever had. My husband remarked that his pad thai dish was not very tasty as well. We will never return to this restaurant and do not recommend it to anyone interested in good Asian food. But most of all, we question their sanitary procedures. read more

It's over thickened mush with little resemblance other than color to good Hot and Sour soup. The spicy green beans are not remotely spicy - and they were NOT cooked in the szechuan style that uses very fresh beans in very hot oil to wrinkle them. Even the tea was weak and not hot. The waitress was fine and appropriately attentive -- about the only good thing I can say. My friends meal must have also been pretty bad, since her appetite is usually apparent, and she picked at the meal, leaving almost half. Basically, nothing has any flavor -- not even the spicy mustard which they managed to make bland also. No reason to ever come here again. read more
