Full disclosure... I really wanted this place to be good. I made a 20+ list of places to go by our verbo and Virginia Beach. This place looked like somewhere I would have gone in my teenage years. My family other than my girlfriend's dad were not excited about subs at first . But we had a monsoon and it gave me the chance to get in the jeep and take the opportunity Walking in the door I met a young man and asked him the difference between the top two grinders ( subs to us) ... We went with two super greater grinders due to they have pepperoni and extra cheese over the greater grinder. Our order was 2 super grinders , 2 salami grinders , 1 meatballs grinder, and a last min addition of two brownies At this point I had a really nice conversation with Nicki a young and energetic girl who was working on all our grinders . She could not have been any better and insured me that we would not be disappointed... Correct she was right... They were great... just wonderful balance of meat and bread We might have gotten treated better due to conversion with staff... but I have a feeling they just deliver quality daily .... Side note I asked if they were the original location... they were not sure ... but said they knew they were the better location... love it read more

Before I begin let me start off by saying that this review is based solely upon my personal experiences and my personal experiences alone, so without further explanation let's begin!. I believe I have been to one of their locations a while back, so far back I don't believe I was a Yelp member back then. But now I am and I am writing a review!. When you walk in it's like an old school restaurant feel.. I ordered a greater grinder sandwich and I was on my way!. Sucks nothing like Zero juicy subs .. the only smokin was their chicken noodle soup w crackers .. their subs are tiny compared to the goat .. Nothing great about it . They totally flew off! Low Quality Meats & Bread!! I heard the brownies are off the charts! read more

I am surprised about the bad reviews. Even though I have passed this place hundreds of times I finally stopped in. It is right across from the hospital which is nice. There is a parking lot but I found it confusing to get in and out. The place reminds me of sub shops of the 80's. My childhood. Love it. Nothing fancy. Menu is posted and it looks old. They had fresh brownies cooling off. There are plenty of seats. The staff was very friendly. I got a roast beef sub and I enjoyed it. I can't compare it to the past and say that it's smaller because it was my 1st time. But I found it was the right amount of food for me. Hot and tasty. I would definitely go back. I had pictures but my phone was stolen so I can't post pictures. It definitely feels like a family owned business. I would give them a try.....especially if you are hanging out at the hospital. read more

This place was highly recommended to try, it's been here for a gazillion years. Couldn't wait to try, all toasty and melty. Thank goodness this place is super close to our place because we're going back A LOT! These sandwiches are 5 full stars all day! The place is busy with orders, even if people aren't eating in the restaurant, they are super popular, have tons of phone in and pickup orders, and I can see why. The bread is incredible, soft, steamy, and chewy. The meats are fantastic, full flavor, very fresh, and very, very plentiful! All the toppings and sauces are delicious. I love that they fully toast and heat the entire sandwich so it's all melted and steamy and warm and chewy and delicious! This is definitely one of the best submarine/grinder sandwiches that I've ever eaten. Went back two days in a row because they are so fantastic! They have a special for dinner that is hard to beat! If you love, sweet peppers, don't miss grabbing a side, or throwing them on your sandwich, pure heaven! Highly recommend Greater Grinders! I could eat there every day! read more

I couldn't believe that I could buy a bad sub sandwich. Not only was the sandwich blah, the service was embarrassingly poor. I happened to visit while they were cutting onions so I was teary eyed while I waited for my sandwich. This place didn't have pickles and when I asked for mustard the young lady handed me little packets that I promise were consistent with being expired. I tried this place because of an article I read at the Subway Station in Newport News but these places are night and a cold rainy day away in terms or taste, quality and service. Their subs have definitely gotten skimpier. Their meatball and cheese, which I've gotten for years, now has 3 meatballs cut in half to fill up the whole roll. They used to put 6 whole meatballs on them! The greater grinder, formerly a favorite, has the meats rolled up so as to appear to be more than there actually is. Sad to see my old neighborhood sub shop decline so. They have also increased their prices to $14 for most whole subs. Even subway puts whole meatballs on their subs! read more

I was at the hospital across the street from greater grinders. A family member suggested I try their grinders. I had the Italian grinder. I only ate half of the half as I felt the taste was missing something and quite couldn't figure it out. Maybe I will try when I'm not at the hospital and able to fully enjoy. When we did call to ask questions we did receive great customer service and given plenty of information from the employee who answer the phone. read more

Amazing. I'm upset it took me almost a year of driving by to finally stop and try out. I picked up 4 sandwiches, super greater grinder, club, pastrami, and steak and cheese with peppers. My fave was the steak and cheese with hot and sweet peppers and my husband loved his pastrami sandwich. Will definitely be coming by more often instead of subway when we have a craving. I'd def recommend calling in ahead, it was a little bit of a wait but was well worth it! Oh and they have really great ice tea, and their ice machine makes the best ice too :) read more

I've only tried the Super Greater Grinder, but I've had it twice, and both times it was delicious. The bread is crispy on the outside, but it's light and fluffy on the inside. It holds up to the condiments and doesn't get too soggy, even after setting around for a little while. The ingredients were tasty and seemed really fresh. They all worked together well. I got it with just oil and vinegar, but you have the choice of adding mustard or mayonnaise. I think that might overpower this particular sandwich. The first time I had the sandwich was in a group setting, and everyone seemed to enjoy their sandwiches. It's definitely better than any of the chain options in the area. read more

Greater Grinder has the best pastrami subs. The service is very good. This is my go to place for subs.

Beware they now charge a 3% service fee if you use a debit/credit card and they don't tell you about it. They should warn you when you order so you can have cash. I don't like business who pass on their charges to customers. to make matters worse they screwed up one of my sandwiches. I will have to think really hard if I will go back again. Got the tuna and cheese sub and it was the best. Great service. The steak and cheese was better than I've had in a while.

Can't give it anywhere close to a good review. Service is ok though everyone seems to work in slow motion. I can live with slow service if the food is great but my sub was not good at all. I got a tuna and cheese to go but wound up tossing it after smelling it and taking one bite. I think the tuna was either really poor quality or was going bad. I'm starting out with 5 stars based on service and friendliness at the counter to order, and overall cleanliness, while I wait for my order. It seems like the operations is women owned and operated. The lady who took my order was super friendly and made this out-of-towner feel welcomed. My half sub and a drink, less than $5. Yep. The rock music was a nice soundtrack to my lunch. Seems like the do a great business of takeout and delivery. The eat-in area of 15 or so booths and tables are 85% filled at 1:30 this afternoon. All that is reassuring as I wait about 10 minutes for my meal now. All good if it's fresh and made to order. The menu is a good mix of cold and hot classics. About 10 of each. Waiting on food outside of my NY Metro area is always hard to gauge. I'm starving, so the now 13 minutes borders excessive. I only ordered tuna with sweet peppers. Be patient, Bob. The wait wasn't worth it unfortunately. The taste was ok but it missed the mark on my expectations, and what I ordered. My order was simply tuna with sweet peppers. It came out hot, toasted, with hot lettuce and tomato. There may have been sweet peppers in it. I think I tasted 1 on 1 bite. The amount of tuna was disappointing also as I'm used to it oozing out when taking a bite. The bread ended up being to overwhelming therefore. I deducted a star from my starting point for the shortfalls. I would have taken 2 off if it weren't for possible regional differences and expectations. read more

Stopped here for lunch. Got the super greater grinder half sub, which comes with salami, pepperoni, 2 cheeses, lettuce, tomato, hots and sweet peppers, and spiced luncheon meat. I'll admit some fear at trying that last one, but it all worked out for the best. The sandwich was hot, as they toast all of their subs, and it was delicious. Cheap too. $4.55 for the sandwich with the most stuff on it I've seen in a long time. Get the meal deal for an extra 1.50 for chips and a soda. My colleague got the mesquite chicken which ended up just being a chicken breast on a roll. Serves her right for eating healthy. Overall, a good spot for a quick bite to eat in the Tidewater area. read more

I adore the meatball sub here. My husband swears by the super greater grinder. Some of the other sandwiches we've tried lack distinctive flavor. Overall, this place is far better than Subway! I love greater Grinders. It's a easy go to because their service is on point and their food is delicious. The bread seems fresher. The Sauce with more flavor. The toasted cheesy goodness perfect. It's also a good meeting spot with plenty of space. I meet with friends and couples that I will be marrying (officiant) weekly. My fav is the super greater grinder and the turkey add roast beef. I've been a life time resident of the Hampton Roads area, this sub shop has been around since I was in Jr high. I've had their food and their competitions, another local sub shop. I'm 54 now, I stopped in for lunch today and was instantly hit by nostalgia (not much had changed inside so I expected really good subs). It's been 30 or more years since I've ate there. I was not impressed, my sub was dry and flavorless and the sub roll was toasted hard. To top it off the lady who served me was less than inviting. I never once received the customary thank you a customer should get instead she handed the bag told me the halves were marked and walked away as I said thank you to her. So i went up to the counter and asked for a utensil and again i said thank you to her, to which her reply was nothing but silence. There was a sign a wall that read something like this, "your service is dependent on my mood and your attitude", Well in my family business (jewelry store in Chesapeake) we strive to satisfy all our customers even the ones that are difficult. Maybe Greater Grinders is past its prime and needs to close because when you forget that your existence as a business is totally dependent on customers and you treat people the way I was treated and served the tasteless bland and hard food I was served then I assure you I will not eat there again. Props on cleanliness though. Service= 1 star quality= 1 star parking / access= 1 star prices= 1 star Cleanliness= 3 stars conclusion, don't waste your time or money here when the competition is way better and only little further down the street in Churchland. I have not had greater grinders in several years. This was everything I missed. I love the hot pepper spread. It was a little dry but that was my fault for not asking for mayo along with the oil and vinegar. Parking is tight but do worth it. read more
