Omg the cheese pockets are simply the best I ever have tasted! I have been eating Grebe's bakery all my life! Now I make a trip down to their location a couple of times a year with my grandchildren!! My one star is for the lack of follow up and customer service. I requested a donation for a school event. Was told that she would call me back with more information. Failed to call me back, I called back and even the after our second conversation (which came with no information), I was told she would call me back within an hour still no call back as promised. If they could not or did not want to help out, they should have just told me right from the start. Let's just say other surrounding bakeries have come forth and donated without a hesitation. I'm a HUGE donut person and Grebe's is always a great choice. You go here for more of a classic donut in contrast to the specialty-types more common downtown or in cities. Every time I've been here there's a line to the door of customers looking to get donuts food, and other pastries they sell. I don't even live near here, but am willing to drive across town for a good donut! I especially love going here when I'm buying for large groups since they have a huge variety and always a ton of donuts in stock. Also love their cookies and they are also great for large groups. Being outside, you instantly get a historical vibe and you can feel inside that this business has deep roots that they are proud of! In fairness their crullers used to be good before they were mass produced. When I bought them in a bag at the Piggly Wiggly they were big chunky cakey great tasting crullers, but now that they are mass produced, I taste something odd, not right, a "factory smell" taste to them. I stopped in to pick up a half dozen donuts and a sandwich for work. I waited in line just a short time and she took my donut order and was ready to check me out. I said I wanted a sandwich and she said they were not doing sandwiches because of the line of customers. That is declining a sale to me which is very poor business practice because if I would've gotten another half dozen donuts, it would've been the same price as the sandwich. I will never ever go back there again, and will tell all my friends not to go over there again. read more

Much of the bakery around Milwaukee is from Grebe's. It is sold at many outlets, grocery stores, gas stations. I love Grebe's. This location on Lincoln is a tiny little place but has the most amazing selection. You can get fresh bread, donuts and cakes. It is pretty inexpensive and fun. If you have grown up in the Milwaukee area and love a great long john or fresh bread from Grebe's this is a great stop. read more

I loved this place. It was very busy, but they are very efficient. You take a number, wait for it to be called, get your bakery. Simple. I can easily say Grebe's Bakery has some of the best donuts in Milwaukee. One of my friends suggested it to me about a year ago and I first came here on national donut day. I was so disappointed in myself for not coming here immediately after she told me! They have a large variety of donuts that would satisfy anyones palate. I brought home a box of donuts for my family and ended up sampling about 7 donuts (along with the free one on national donut day). Very dangerous for a donut fiend like me! Traditional bakery that has probably been around over 75 years, and I believe in the same location. They provide their baked goods for grocers in the region too. Grebe's offers cakes, bread and rolls, cookies, doughnuts, cupcakes, and some hot breakfast and lunch sandwich items, and hot coffee. Everything is made with traditional recipes and ingredients and the taste shows. Doughnuts are yeasty and sweet, ample sized baked goodness. Next time I am going to try a hot ham and cheese sandwich- made fresh on the premises and smell absolutely amazing. read more

I've always been a huge fan of pastries and I've been subjected to Grebe's donuts for years as a life long south sider. I've always thought they were a bit overrated. The chocolate long john tastes like they spread store bought frosting on a really big dinner roll. Definitely not my thing. These are the same donuts you find at local Speedway gas stations and while I pass up these donuts on most days, my young daughter loves their frosted smiley face cookies. So when the Speedway close by had no cookies to offer, I decided to be "SuperDad" and grab some cookies at the source. I walk in early Sunday afternoon and I'm hit straight in the face by the smell of hot ham. Instantly I decide that this trip will be for more than just mere cookies. I walk in and I don't grab a number right away so I can decide what I want and maybe have some pastries that are not offered at the gas station. I pick out a few things, grab a number and get all my questions in order so I can be quick about things and not hold up the line. The bakery is laid out pretty well and has a lot to offer. It has that old time nostalgic feel that I absolutely love. It's too bad the service doesn't hold up. A woman in her late 40's/early 50's yells "11!" and I run up quick. I start her off by having her grab me the cookies, and while she grabs the cookies I ask her what flavor the turnovers are. You would have thought I had asked to borrow her car as she rolled her eyes and said "Apple!". While most turnovers are apple, I would hate to grab what I thought was an apple turnover only to bite into it and find out it is cherry. I figured I was being too much of a burden, so I told her I think I'll only have the cookies today and walked out with a lot less than I was planning to. I understand that some people think that this type of rude behavior is "cute", but sometimes it's ridiculous. I'd rather spend my bucks at the fifty other hardworking bakeries in the area that are happy to answer very simple questions about the products they offer. read more

The donuts were meh I got an Apple fritter that had little to no apple taste and no apple chunks anywhere to be found inside, and I got a chocolate cake donut that was very fluffy and moist (which is nice because most cake donuts are so dry) but it was a bit too sweet. I tend not to be a sweet breakfast kind of gal. In fact, I'll pass on doughnuts most days. But, I ended up here on a rainy Saturday morning. The ladies inside were friendly and happy, although they looked like they could get a little gruff with you if you ordered something ridiculous. There wasn't much of a wait. They have a great selection of sugary breakfast...doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, something called a Persian (but without nuts, and I'm now told they're supposed to have nuts...but I liked mine better without nuts). There are also lots of cookies and cupcakes and plenty all decorated cute for the under-12 demographic. Prices were really good. I got 4 doughnuts and a loaf of French bread for about 5 bucks. They look to have hot ham and rolls on Sunday as well - will have to check that out. Remember how I said I didn't like doughnuts most days? We went because it was really close and we just wanted a light lunch. Light lunch. And we left with lunch, four donuts, an entire cake, and a gallon of milk. We had to stop ourselves from adding a few cookies decorated like Hank (the Brewers' dog). All of that came to $20, which we thought was really reasonable. (Especially considering milk was $3.50 since you are not buying it from a grocery store.) Everything was SO GOOD. All of it very fresh. The sandwiches were big, too. Some people have mentioned that the employees were rude. We didn't find them to be rude. They were busy, and it is true that they kind of assume you are an insider and you know everything about the place, but we were offered help several times. The following didn't make my experience bad (thus the five stars) but are good things to know going in: It's primarily a bakery, and since we were there for lunch it was a little unclear at first what was available to order. They have hot options during the week, but not on the weekend. They have deli options Monday-Saturday. It just took us a minute to find that menu and to know what we could order. A must-stop for stollen fans. This place is so amazingly quaint and feels a bit like a blast from the past. In the past month they've provided me with a sheet cake with a picture on it and multiple stollens for my grandmother - which made her very, very happy. You used to be able to find Grebe's in places like Super America gas stations and Sentry stores, but as those have disappeared, I've run out of places to look for Grebe products and have instead gone straight to the source. The ladies in the store are so nice and there's always a case full of cookies, cupcakes and doughnuts so you end up leaving having purchased more goodies than you planned on. The cake I had the image put on was a slight bit of a head scratcher, as I provided a rather large image that was oriented to have the cake be more vertical than horizontal, but they shrunk the picture and it ended up being kind of small in the middle of the large, horizontal cake. But it still looked good and tasted great, so it really wasn't a big deal. They are one of the few "discount" style places that will do a filled sheet cake, too, which its great and their prices were competitive with Sam's Club and Pick N' Save. read more

I spend some time near the coffee pot at work. Once in a while, someone drops a box of Grebe's doughnuts. Having never tried one, I could never possibly write a review about the Grebe's experience. But now that I have established myself as a regular, it is time, but I still have not had a doughnut. When it comes to satisfying my need for food, I like meats. Good meats. Lot of meats. The deli at Grebe's is quick and sharp. Fill out a sandwich form with your selection of bread, Boar's Head meats, and fixings. You will be out of there just as fast as the Culver's drive thru. And, you better watch out. Some of the sassiest and nicest ladies in town run the show at Grebe's and they only get sassier with age. read more

Gosh, who doesn't love a fresh doughnut?! Grebe's will not disappoint. The honeymooners and cheese pockets are amazing. The hot ham is worth waiting in the long line for (make sure to take a number on Sunday!). I recently went here to get their Hank cookies. To. Die. For. The buttercream frosting was at least and inch thick and complimented the sugar cookie so well. Just so good. I pass Grebe's on the way home from work and you can almost always get a whiff of the fresh doughnuts being cooked right around 5:30pm. Love it! My only complaint about Grebe's is the customer service is spotty. It all depends on which lady helps you and what kind of mood they are in. This is definitely a thing for the true Wisconsin-ite, which I am definitely not. Donuts were very reasonably priced but the taste was a little bit too heavy for me. It was REAL dough. They were extremely heavy and I found them a bit hard to eat. Be prepared to stand in line on a Sunday morning if you want anything. Every time we pass this place during business hours it's packed, so that has to say something. If you're looking for a calorie-fest, this is a great place for you, but for the casual dessert eater that's happy with a piece of yellow cake with butter cream frosting from a grocery store, it's a little too much for me. read more

I was passing the cermak deli case while shopping and thought some nice premium deli lunch meat sandwiches on fresh baked bread would make a great lunch for a few days. I grabbed my meats and cheese and went to the fresh baked bread isle but I couldn't find onion rolls which I thought would be perfect. So I knew this bakery was around the coroner and went there and there they were with just a few left. I grabbed a bag and I don't usually eat donuts but staring at me was a tray of what looked like glazed cake donuts so I got two as well. My bill was a little over $3.00 for a just made great quality product. I'm not a big dough nut fan but dam they were good. Dun kin dough nuts is what I was use to at jobs so I didn't care much for them but after having a quality dough nut I just might grab a couple from time to time. I want to try more of there products. Good deli meats need great bread so if you are going to shell out for premium deli meats wonder bread just won't do. This will be a regular place for me. It's busier on Sunday mornings so take a number but it's worth the wait. The staff was great to me and as previous posts had problems that I didn't experience at all. I think if they threw the bags at me I would still go back. I don't usually shop at bakery's as you can see by my reviews but I just might put it on my list of quests for the best in Milwaukee. read more

Great donuts! I've been coming here for over 7 years! Donuts are fresh and everyone I recommend to this place love the donuts!

This place does high quality sugar rush like no other. Enter the front door only if you've already decided the diet will start tomorrow, because you won't be leaving here with anything that even vaguely resembles weight loss friendly fare. You name your favorite donut, and Grebe's will have it, freshly baked and ready to eat for a RIDICULOUSLY low price. Creme or jelly filled, long johns, coffee dunkers - buy it and love it. An important note: their decorated cookies are amazing. I know, most people don't get too excited over cookies, but these cookies are worth making a special exception for. Trust me - you can find deliciously frosted cows, turtles (with hats), flowers (with a ladybug) on top of succulently soft sugar cookies. Eating these cookies is an afternoon long event. Savor it. Grebe's also does "make your own" sandwiches - choose from soft breads, quality meats and cheeses, and any condiment you want - for (again) a ridiculously cheap price. A gentleman we encountered in the parking lot pretty much summed up the greatness of Grebe's - as he sat in his car, devouring his sandwich, he leaned out the window and said, "it's so good, I couldn't wait to get home to eat it." One of the highlights of living in our neighborhood is Grebe's bakery. When we moved into our neighborhood this was one of the first places we were told to go. We are in luck that it is in walking distance. I try to make it my rule that I can only eat grebe's IF I walk there, therefore counteracting some of the damage caused by baked goods. It has been mentioned that the behind the counter staff can be a little less then friendly, but I believe it adds to the charm. You get a "what'ya want hun" true Milwaukee style. If you are not prepared or ask too many questions you will get grimaced and sighed at but hey, no one complains at Cranky Al's. Two things I like about Grebes...the donuts and the price. For cheaper then the local grocery chain you get higher quality. Probably higher fat too, but its a donut! I LOVE their honeymooner donut, it is my all time favorite. Second are their crullers. They also offer deli sandwiches and hot ham. And, my daughter would have you know...they give you (if you are a small child) a free cookie upon entering! read more

I was so road weary getting in late Saturday night, but as soon as the sun was up all I could think about was getting to Grebe's before they ran out of cheese pockets! Now I read that they do a fish fry? Can't wait to try it! My first job was at Meurer's Bakery (da competition). Sure Grebe's has really great, old-fashioned pastries and doughnuts, but the reason we go there is their excellent selection of Boar's Head meats and cheeses at the cheapest price in town. You can also build-your-own sandwich with Boar's Head meat and cheese on your choice of freshly baked breads, croissant, or hard rolls. There's a great selection of sauces and veggies to finish it off. Get a side order of Gramma's Potato Salad and a smiley face cookie for dessert! The service might not be the fastest and the ladies might occasionally be a little grumpy, but that's all part of the charm for me. I found the more regular you are, the better the service. read more
