First time at this location. I stopped in to pick up a cake for a special occasion. Food: They have a great selection of cakes, donuts, pastries, and other bakery items. What really caught my eye was their amazing assortment of filled coffee cakes. You could choose from custard, cream cheese, or buttercream fillings. All three sounded delicious, but I finally settled on the buttercream. Some people in our group thought it had a little too much buttercream. I, on the other hand, thought it was just about perfect! Service: A couple of very friendly employees helped me out. I couldn't decide what to get, and they never made me feel rushed. They even offered a few suggestions, which made the decision a little easier. Atmosphere: The bakery has a large, open layout with plenty of room to browse the display cases, tables, and refrigerated deli items. The large front windows let in lots of natural light, making the space feel bright and welcoming. There's also a large parking lot, so parking wasn't an issue. I have purchased doughnuts from National Bakery for years- particularly for their vanilla frosted long johns- (at least when I was there early enough to get them before they were gone. ) unfortunately the last few times I have purchased them they were not the same. The frosting seemed to be the same frosting but thinner and skimpy. my main disappointment was the dough. It was not the same recipe, it didnt even look like the same "homemade " ones they used to make. All in all -not good enough for me to make that early morning effort to get them any more. I decided to check out a bakery that I hadn't been to yet before work one morning and I had recently bookmarked two of them as places to try, one being National Bakery & Deli. National opens earlier than the other one so that was the deciding factor. I took a couple minutes to look at the options in the donut cases and ended up going with a seasonal pumpkin cake donut and an apple streusel. I didn't taste any pumpkin at all in the cake donut. The only flavor was just basic cake donut, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but certainly not what I thought I was getting. The frosting on top of the apple streusel was the vastly dominant flavor, which I found to be surprising because it didn't look like that thick of a layer of frosting. There was some apple inside, though not nearly enough in general, and especially not enough to counter the overwhelmingly sweet frosting flavor. Visually, the donuts and various cookies and pastries didn't look very impressive. I thought they had a grocery store quality look to them. The only plus side is, like grocery store donuts, they were cheap. The two items I ordered totaled less than $3 after tax. Other bakeries like O&H Danish Bakery and Cranky Al's may cost more, but there's noticeable difference in how they look and how they taste. Service is great, the people working there are great. But the bakery, eeesh. No better, maybe even worse than a mediocre grocery store bakery. Maybe they were really good at some time, but I've gone there a few times in last 5 to 10 years and have been disappointed. I've been going to National Bakery since I was a young girl. The food is consistently amazing, the staff are all so very friendly and the smells are impossible to beat. National Bakery is the only place I will go to buy a cruller. Not too sweet, slight crust on the outside but sweet pillowy donut on the inside. I could eat 4 in a row! This is possibly the worst place for my diet! All the baked good looked delicious and I can't believe I haven't been here until now. After driving past a paczki sign for a week - I made a a point to stop here on fat Tuesday to pick up some treats for the office. I am so glad I did. It was a full blown out Fat Tuesday party in the bakery with mardi gras decor, beads and an accordion player! Right way to set the mood for the lent season. I ordered a dozen on paczki - half cherry and half prune. The paczkis were so doughy and had plenty of filling. They were a big hit at the office and were the first ones gone. Some of my other co-workers brought paczkis from the grocery store or other bakeries and mine were the first ones gone - so based on this, I think we all agreed National bakery ones were the best. So many other better bakeries with fresh food than this one. Donuts are old and hard clearly not baked fresh more like baked once Frozen then re-baked, then sitting on a cold Tray. Very unhygienic there , employees do not wash their hands after going to the restrooms, I'm not sure why the health department hasn't been doing their job they don't even have signs showing that they have to wash their hands before going back to work. Seen multiple employees cough right into their hands without washing them also touching cash and then grabbing food with no gloves on. One of the workers is very polite there. One of the workers is very racist . Dawn is a piece of work , I've never met a manager who smokes as many cigarettes as she does and doesn't bother to wash her hands before she sticks her hand into a big chocolate tub of frosting to give to customers on her really fresh frozen donuts. Customers hearing employees talk about people with allergies is appauling and I would never go there if you have an allergy or are a different race , they will talk about you as soon as you leave while customers are still eating there or in the bathroom and can hear them. Very unsanitary conditions and not using proper cleaning procedures is probably why so many get sick from there. The build up of dirt in the bread area is disgusting and they shouldn't be selling bread off of an unclean area with so much dirt on it. Ham sits out for hours left out in the open never kept properly refrigerated. If you are on the heavier side they will make fun of you when you leave on how you shouldn't be there buying donuts. Sharon is the worst - rude VERY RACIST talks about customers and how she can't stand how customers are never washes her hands after bathroom or coughing into her hands . So many better bakeries that make fresh food not frozen, and that do so much more for the community ! Please remember anytime they tell you it's fresh , it's not, it's made, froze, then defrosted then refroze then defrosted again. EVERYTHING comes made then froze then defrosted then froze again and defrosted again. Pazcksi are made weeks in advance and froze then defrosted froze again and finally cooked again then sitting on cold Tray . Nice, well stocked bakery - fresh breads, rolls, cookies, sticky buns, donuts, even dog biscuits. Full deli made to order sandwiches. Hot coffee. Get there early or you might miss the fresh crullers and maple bars. Best peanut butter cookies, coconut cookies are nice and crisp. Be aware cookie flavors rotate. I found out the hard way. It's absolutely fantastic! I travel over 30 minutes to get these donuts and they never disappoint.

We ordered a cake for a birthday party. When I arrived to pick up the cake, the woman opened the lid & revealed the entire top layer of the cake was sliding off...the bakery tried to repair the cake, however, it must've been stored in a freezer & the layer wouldn't budge! At that point she stated that I would need to take the cake to the 16th & Mitchell location for them to REPAIR the cake. Once I explained that the location was too far for me to drive to with my tight schedule, preparing for the party, she proceed to call the main location. Who told her the very same thing, I needed to pay for the cake & then drive it to 16th & Mitchell for repairs. In what universe does this make sense??? I was then offered a $5 discount on any cake in the freezer. I found one relatively similar to the one I ordered & asked if they would write "Happy Birthday" on the cake. She said they do not do that at the Brookfield location. WHAT? You sell blank cakes & are a bakery, yet you have no one in the bakery who can write on a cake? Ok, fine, so at checkout I ask if I will be allowed to take the damaged cake as well as the frozen blank one. Cake is cake after all! Once again, she contacted the main store & they told us no, because it would ruin their reputation if anyone were to see or take photos of the damaged cake & post on social media? So I have a blank frozen birthday cake for a party & you are concerned about your reputation??? The frozen raspberry filled, white chocolate ganache cake from the freezer was dry & inedible. The cake is still sitting in the fridge days later. My family & the guests at the party will not be ordering our cakes from National Bakery again! read more

Oh dear. I have to say I've seen better bakeries at grocery stores. They had a very limited array of treats and the deli was almost non existent. I purchased 3 things. Coconut oatmeal cookies: not bad, a little dry and nothing to write home about. Glazed raised donuts: super thick with a consistency more like a stale beignet. My jaw got sore trying to eat it. Frosted cut out cookies: these were incredibly bad. The cookies had a sand like, dry texture that was flavorless and the frosting was like wax. I will definitely not be returning. I had worked at National Bakery on Greenfield Ave for over 5 years. During that time, I have kept my mouth shut about the freshness of their products, but I can't anymore. I recently went in to get a Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving. The pie I bought on Tuesday didn't end up getting eaten Thursday for Thanksgiving, so it sat on my counter in its plastic container. Saturday morning I go look at the pie and it is COVERED IN MOLD spots on the top of the pie. ALL of the bakery products that come in to the satellite locations (Greenfield Ave & Greendale) are flash frozen until they are brought out to be sold. Some of the product that is sold as "fresh" has actually been frozen for a week if not longer (i.e. cupcakes, cakes, breads). The Main Manager at the Greenfield Ave location is constantly LYING about the freshness of products just to make a sale. She sells products WAY past their pull/waste date knowing the product is old and gross. The Managers and the Owners honestly just don't care. This pie I bought was obviously frozen for a while before being bought out to unthaw and be sold. I was unable to upload a picture of the pie with my review but if I end up being able to you will see just how gross this pie looked. I am SO glad I didn't serve it so no one got sick. I wouldn't even waste my own money on their products when I was an employee. I would never give them any of my money now. DISGUSTING. read more

I bought a groupon to this place and had two funny experiences: 1. I tried to use the Groupon to buy a cake for a birthday, I called 3 days ahead of time (called on a Monday and the party was on Thursday) and after describing the cake I wanted (white frosting and oreo crumbs or black sprinkles around the edges) said there was no way she would be able to have the bakers make that on such 'short notice.' When I said what I wanted was really simple and that I could send her a picture, she went off at me that I would be copywriting someones work if I would send her a picture. So needless to say i wasn't able to get my cake. 2. I went to use my Groupon a month after the cake phone call early in the morning (there were no other customers at 7 am on a Saturday) and was looking around, and in the coolers, behold all miracles of miracles, they were selling cakes, and had one exactly like I had described. They have a nice selection of breads, kiaser rolls, and doughnuts. When I ordered, the woman seemed very annoyed at me (keep in mind, still no customers in the store). All around odd, I would not go back here unless every major grocery store was closed. The food was average, but nothing that a grocery store deli/bakery section doesn't have. read more

They listened to our wants for our wedding cake and the decorators executed it perfectly. The piping was so beautiful. And they made sure the delivery went smoothly. Sentry food store had a hot ham and rolls coupon for $3.98 per pound so I thought I would give it a try because it's a WI thing. One pound of hot ham and 6 rolls to make a sand which . I took lettuce,mayo,ham and roll to make a sand which and it was pretty good. The ham had a good ham flavor and the roll was great. The roll was soft and slightly chewy UN like a hamburger bun which was dam good. This roll is perfect for a burger or sand which . I called Sentry to ask if they made the roll and they said no. I was told that national bakery supplies the roll and I could not buy them from Sentry . This roll made the sand which so I will go to national bakery for them again. A great bread can make or break a sand which so with the right chew and texture with freshness and this is a great base for any burger or sand which. I can't wait to get to national bakery and see what else they have because they are also a deli. read more

Are you serious? My 1st Groupon was used on a Friday in April to purchase a banana cake. I went to serve it the following day only to find that it was dried out and clearly old. I mentioned it the next time that I stopped in only to be informed that the cake had been on the shelf for 5 days. They only bring the cakes in once a week and let them sit until they sell. No offer to refund. My 2nd Groupon was used yesterday to purchase $20 worth of sliced cheese. That is what I got as that was ALL there was on the shelf. The Groupon expired yesterday so I had no choice but to use it as they will not extend it no matter what. When I called the manager today to complain she laughed through the whole call. She acknowledged that there was nothing on the shelf and told me to take it up with Groupon. Why would I go back? read more

Everything I have had here is exactly what I want it to be (not too sugary, like some bakeries in town), and they always have a fine selection. So for some reason, this place has been selected as best donut place in Milwaukee. This is incomprehensible to me. I took my daughter for donuts on a Wednesday morning, and found the store to have a sum total of about 36 donuts, with a limited selection of varieties. Apple fritter? No. Devil's food w/ chocolate frosting? No. Jelly-filled? No. Cake donut with sprinkles (daughter's favorite)? No. Cinnamon cake donut? No. Classic glazed? No. It's also quite clear that none of the donuts are made at the location where they're sold. Bottom line: mediocre-at-best donuts, limited selection, not particularly fresh. Also not open on Sundays. I'm not a big fan of national chain donut joints like Dunkin or Krispy Creme, but would take either over this place. Maybe I'll try Cranky Al's. Somebody brought some donuts from there to work last week, and they were pretty good. read more

They have the same excellent bakery goods as their south-side location. Their ham and rolls are incredible. The service here is, however, less than professional. They are just so slow, make silly small talk, and hire inexperienced people. A young man waiting on me could figure out how to ring up a jelly donut, and no one helped him. They also only have one register so if someone starts ringing up an order, then the customer decides to add some deli meat or some more pastries, you have to stand their and wait for the customer to make up his/her mind, the server to finish slicing the deli meat, etc. It is crazy. I am cool with this approach when things are not busy, but they do this during rush times as well. I typically go to the south-side location, where they are used to crowds and get the job done efficiently. Maybe some improvements in service could be possible?? read more

This is a review for their newest location in Brookfield, located in the V. Richards Shopping Center. Wow, disappointed. Not just compared to what the V. Richards bakery was like, but as any food establishment. Virtually no bakery items in the case, or premade salads or sandwiches. Luckily, or so I thought, there was a premade wrap. I have purchased better sandwiches from a gas station. No flavor, soggy, and the employee handling my food was touching his face and cash register and then my food (while wearing gloves), I explained to him why this was unhygenic and he looked like I was explaining string theory to him. There is no option for chips, sorry kids, you only get off-brand regular flavor. This checkout time took nearly ten minutes because one of there employees stood in front of the cash register while on the phone for most of the time I was there, while not actually using the cash register. All the employees seem to be under 16, and the only adult working just stood there staring into space. Good job on the new location! I'll be sure to never come back. read more

I initially bought a cake in November 2015 and it was great, so I decided to purchase one for Christmas. I could not wait to cut it after dinner. To my complete disappointment, the cake was dry and tasteles. My company thought it was awful. Needless to say, I have a 22 dollar cake just sitting in the box because after they tasted it, no one wanted more. What a waste of money and expectation! Never again!
