I had a craving for Greek food. This is the closes Greek restaurant near me. The lady was friendly. I asked about the dip sampler as I am big on hummus, babagonsh, etc. I asked if it came with grapes leaves. She said yes. Well I got 3 dips, the hummus was bland. No taste to it. The babagonsh was really sour, the only dip that was good was the olive dip. I did not get grape leaves with my order. Also the pita was 1 pita sliced into 8 pcs! I was expecting more pita than that. "Who's cooking tonight? " - Me "Not me" "And I'm not" "Well, what are we going to do? I don't want fast food..." And thus, the refusal of three guys to cook, nor the desire to eat quickly processed food, we find ourselves at Greek Island Grill, just around closing time too. Without a doubt, the atmosphere gives a very home like feeling. A small fire place with a TV above it, combined with wooden tables, and blue paint around the top part of the walls, you will immediately feel the atmosphere of a Greek Restaurant. The food was just like how mama made it. (if I had a Greek mom. Then again, my Greek friend said that his mom didn't make this often, so I have no comparison to go up against.) But you can tell that time was put into each of the items that were made. The Spanakoptia was enough to split between our three stomachs, and just the right appetizer before the main course (honestly, it was the only vegetable based dish we had. ) My dish was a chicken based pasta. There wasn't anything too special about it, but it was definitely a huge portion, and I just barely finished it. For what we paid, it was what we expected. Not a bad place overall. I'll come back here again... or not, considering we just learned they also have take out. Thanks to this place, me and my roommates now can become permanent couch potatoes. read more

I'm sure the food may have been great, if the nasty waitress/owner wouldn't have tried to scam her customers by presenting us with a take out menu to lore us in, then give us a sit-down menu and jack up the prices. When I inquired about why there are two different prices, she responded with "most restaurants have both a take out menu and a sit-down menu. If you sit-down I need to pay my staff." WHAT??? 1) That's why we give tips! 2) That's why she had no customers in her restaurant (minus her friends that occupied the rat hole run by gypsies). 2, maybe 2.5 stars ... just okay. We ordered delivery at work and were a bit shocked by the prices. Overall opinion - "eh." Nothing blew any of us away. The food: Pita with spicy tzaziki: not bad, although I could have done without the spice. Spanakopita: fairly good, with an odd presentation (sausage shaped and formed into a pinwheel). it was forgettable though. Greek salad: just okay, we've had better. Beef souvlaki in pita: again, eh (and served with nothing on the side). Cheeseburger (from my friend who doesn't eat "ethnic" food): undercooked. The kicker: Gyro pizza: in my defense, it was on a greek menu so i was expecting something along the lines of gyro meat with feta and tomatoes on a pizza-shaped pita. Nope! It was pizza (red sauce, mozzarella) on a pita with chunks of gyro. Weird, and not in a wonderful way. We're bored of all the lunch places around, so we may be back just out of frustration. I'm from Chicago originally, so I *know* Greek food. In fact, I recently had the pleasure of bringing my Bergen county-born BF to the famous Greek Islands restaurant in the Windy City's Greektown. When I read that a BYOB restaurant bearing a similar name was open in Hackensack, I was psyched. The BF and I headed out for a Saturday night dinner. Just like the previous reviewer noted, the place was practically empty. (One other couple was wrapping up their meal as we sat down.) But also like the previous reviewer notes, it was a cozy and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere, so we weren't deterred by the noticeable lack of other patrons. The menu was extensive and the options and prices generally met my expectations ($14.95 for chicken platter, $9.95 for a souvlaki pita). We ordered an appetizer of three dips (tzatziki, taramosalata and hummus), which according to the menu appeared to be $6.95 and a bowl of avgolemono soup ($6) to share. The presentation was charming - the dips were served in old fashioned ice cream sundae glass cups and the soup in glass heart shaped bowls. The tzatziki was fresh, but a bit thin - for the area, not the worst (a la It's Greek to Me's dill-inflicted concoction), not my favorite (Oceano's in Fair Lawn, where they use their own homemade Greek yogurt). When we ran out of pita for the dips, we were asked if we'd like some more - sure, why not? The soup was the expected egg-lemon broth and orzo...a bit lackluster. As for our entrees, the chicken platter, which BF ordered, was a generous portion - big chunks of souvlaki chicken, lots of rice, a separate plated Greek salad complete with two little pieces of dolmades. My combo gyro/chicken souvlaki pita was also fresh, flavorful, colorful and happily enough to take 1/2 home to have for lunch the following day. Full and content, we decided to skip dessert and ask for the check. Now...here's where the little restaurant loses big points. After BF spent a good five minutes looking it over, I asked him if there seemed to be a problem. Apparently, the three dip appetizer = $14.95, not $6.95 as the menu had made it seem. And they charged us $1 for extra pita. Hmmm. Yea, yea, yea, so we're in a recession, but after being practically the sole patrons in an establishment on a Saturday night, and spending $50 on dinner, was it really necessary to charge us $1 for an extra small pancake-sized pita? Kinda lame, we think. As for the dips, maybe we should have clarified the cost from the outset, but it should read that three dips are $14.95. The menu is misleading. Bottom-line: I'm rooting for the Greek Island Grill to succeed, if only because Bergen desperately needs more cozy, authentic Greek restaurants.* (Especially since the owners of Glen Rock's most beloved restaurant with an identity crisis, Jalapenos/formerly Mythos/formerly Jalapenos, traded baklava back in for burritos several months back.) Check it out, but make sure you know what you're getting/paying for before wracking up an unexpectedly bloated bill. *Note to NJ'ans who have yet to be initiated fully into the fraternity of going Greek: If you're on the fence, do give this place a shot. I urge more of you to try and enjoy Greek, because this former Chicagoan cannot subsist on Italian and bagels alone. read more

Just ok... Not the worst but far from the best. The menu is extensive and the prices are reasonable but the food is nothing special. The meat from the gyro lacked some flavor and the tzaziki was thin and watery and not great. We went nack for a second visit and tried some of the dinner options and they weren't really and better than gyros. Nothing was bad but nothing really impressed us either. A Taste of Greece just a few minutes away in River Edge is so much better. read more

Excellent food! I ordered a small Greek Salad with a skewer of chicken. It was apparent that everything was made to order, including the charcoal heated pita the salad came with. The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned; the balance of among the romaine, tomato, onions, feta, olives and dolmades was just right. I went to the restaurant for the first time not expecting high quality food/preparation ... and what a pleasant surprise! Fresh, wonderful food! I picked this place instead of the halal place down the block. Mistake #1 I ordered a gyro platter.... Notice they didnt have it on the gyro machine instead had it precooked sitting in a container (not even on ice!) Theres a good way to get sick! I took the food to my office. You have the owner doing everything, from giving the menu to bringing out the food to overseeing her 'staff', who by the way didn't assist anyone with ordering or asking if they needed anything. 2. It's lunch time and the service is slooooowwww (as owner seems to be the only one taking orders and doing anything) 3. I was asked to try the homemade 'lemonade' which was without exaggeration was just plain old lemon water 4. I ordered the lamb pita and was probably the most bland food i have ever eaten. meat has zero seasoning and the tzatziki was just as bad. 5. Over-priced food. For my lemon water and a pita sandwich i paid about $12 (lunch) Im sure some of the other dishes might taste better, but given the slow un-friendly service and over-priced below average food i will not be going back. read more

I was not impressed. I'm sort of shocked with the reviews, because I did not have the same experience. I ordered food to go and had it delivered, and it was not good. I don't always expect the most when it is delivery, so I've definitely kept that into consideration. One of the things I ordered was the lamb in the pita. There was literally one small piece of lamb in there. What was the point of even ordering this? It was not a pita. I would have enjoyed it more at a diner! I definitely just expected more. We were a group of 4 looking for a BYOB place in Hackensack since we originally made reservations for 2 at another location and when 2 more unexpectedly joined us, the restaurant couldn't accommodate a larger group. We yelped something nearby and walked past this place. Now, I always feel good about Greek food. It doesn't make me feel as guilty as other types of food do, and most of the time it is delicious! We stopped in and were seated right away. We had a great waitress who I later found out was the owner of the restaurant. The restaurant seemed very new but it has been open for 2 years or more. We went for the traditional greek platters with chicken/gyro and Greek fries. First came our Greek salad, yum! Then came out platters. It was everything I was expecting and very very good. In terms of atmosphere, we felt like we crashed a family party. Everyone in the restaurant knew each other. At one point or another everyone got up to sing a song also. At first we thought the music was pretty loud and we couldn't hear each other talk. But 2 bottles of wine later, we were glad we ended up there because although we didn't know why everyone seemed to know each other, it turned out to be a homey feel and we got very involved with watching everyone perform and laughed a lot. There wasn't a person in the restaurant that didn't have a smile on. Lastly, the desserts were amazing and the perfect finish. I forget the name but I had a custard dessert described as 'light' by the owner and i couldn't believe how good it was. We stayed a while after our meal to finish our wine and we were not rushed out at all. We were even invited to their holiday party later that month. Amazing service. I've eaten here several times and have yet to be disappointed. I love the spicy feta appetizer. I don't usually like meat other than beef, but I tried their lamb gyro platter for dinner -- wow, no weird taste like you'd expect with lamb (I know that sounds odd, but there are people like me out there who find anything other than beef, chicken and pork weird). The platter was also tasty and you can tell that the ingredients were quality... If i had to complain about anything it would be that the portions are average-below average... I came here once a few years ago and I just had a gyro. It was pretty good. Often when I eat gyros they are not actually from Greek restaurants. I usually get them from diners. Not much to go by, but here's my first impression: Cute lunch spot if you work or are in the area. I got the soup & salad special. Avgolemono was decent, but a little salty (and I do love salty food). Salad was your standard Greek salad, but the tzatziki needs some TLC (didn't taste like anything) and the vinaigrette was a little tangy. Went to this place on a Friday we found it very cozy and friendly but like many other reviews said the place did not have many patrons inside... Which does not bother me much! We ordered the tarama which was actually quite delicious. We also got the grilled octopus to start (one of my favorites) and it was nicely grilled not meze like a lot of other places bring out. What a strange experience I just had at the Greek Island Grill. As we were walking in, my friend said "this isn't a good sign"--referring to the fact that nobody was there on Saturday afternoon. Despite that and the musty fake-flower-type smell, we sat down anyway. Then we soon noticed something else that was odd... That was no music playing, the place was silent. But we decided to play our own on my phone so that was OK. We ordered wings for an appetizer and gyros as our meal. I've learned to pronounce gyro the "real" Greek way, but the waiter had no idea what I meant when I said it. You'd think that's pretty basic in a Greek restaurant. Anyway, those were the worst wings I've ever had--they were so dry and bland. And there were only 5 of them for like $7, ouch. We were pretty scared for the gyros at that point, but felt awkward walking out. To our surprise, the gyros were actually delicious! We were pleased. My pita was a little burnt on one side, but other than that it was very good. I really didn't expect such good food after everything else being so odd, but if they can tighten up the loose ends it actually might not be a bad spot to go eat. We have been here a few times now, and have ordered a few times for delivery (don't bother)...and have had a pretty mixed experience. Last week my husband and I sat down for a late lunch/early dinner...and were the only ones in the entire place. The atmosphere is cozy, and the place is well decorated. The waiter came up to us right away and took our order...I thought the menu was a bit pricey...and they upcharged ($3!!) when I asked for a greek salad with Haloumi instead of feta; it was just OK..not great..but edible. My husband's gyro was just OK; like many of my fellow yelpers have said, its re-heated meat...not an actual gyro/shawerma machine - and you can really taste the difference. (I stopped ordering the gyro for this reason). We've ordered delivery from them before too...and delivery is a bit of a joke (it seems like the owner delivers herself, but cannot find major streets in Hackensack or Maywood and is always at least 30 min. late from the time she quotes...the food is cold by the time it arrives...its better to just go in). Greek Island Grill and Bar has the best Greek food I've ever had. The owner, Berkay Tuna, was very hospitable and made every concession for me to make sure I had the best experience possible. The same goes for Nikki, the bartender there, and the two gave me the best Greek restaurant experience I've had to date.
