Cold Pikilia - Assorted Appetizers (Hummus, Tzatziki, Spicy Feta)

After a somewhat disappointing experience at a different Greek restaurant recently, I was so happy to go here and have a delicious meal! The dip trio was great, we picked the tzatziki, hummus, and spicy feta! This was also my first time trying Moussaka and it was so good I'm glad I tried it here. Desserts were also delicious!

Tasty Greek food with a large menu, reasonable prices, in a casual environment On a Saturday evening, there was only one other party there but if it was filled I could imagine that it would get loud. The menu length reminds me a bit of a diner menu in comparison to the usual Greek menu. There are pitas/gyros, platters, entrees, apps, salads and soups. There are also a few things on the menu that don't belong on a Greek menu: burger, quesadillas, and chicken francese; I'm not sure what to think about this but it would be something picky eaters could have! I enjoyed the spanakopita platter with fries and grilled veggies (spanakopita didn't have a strong taste, grilled veggies of zucchini, carrots, onions were soft and perhaps slightly overcooked but good). The shrimp souvlaki platter with mashed potatoes and rice was also tasty. Most platters come with two sides. They also give you complimentary hummus with pita bread. Service was nice and not pushy. The decor is pretty casual with some Greek art and knick knacks around, along with plenty of pictures of the chef. Their website isn't that great and seems more catered to to-go orders. It's located on a street with a few other places like a pizza spot but there are also a lot of empty storefronts. Street and metered parking before 8 pm. Given its location, not sure I'd be back anytime soon but I recommend!

The Garden State is incredibly diverse, with a variety of nationalities having a major impact on exactly how New Jersey is, particularly when it comes to the extensive choice of international food patrons can enjoy. A favorite for many is Greek cuisine, with a number of delicious restaurants that can savor a sliver of the Greek islands year-round. Based on the staples of the Mediterranean diet, its culinary culture became more sophisticated as part of the Byzantine and the Ottoman Empire, receiving many influences at the crossroads where the East and the West meet. Located on Main Street in the heart of Ridgefield Park since 2004 and named after the owner's hometown, Sparta Taverna is a family-style BYOB establishment. A reservation was easily made for dinner via OpenTable. Upon entering this cozy, casual, and inviting vibe as first-timers to celebrate an early birthday, my partner, our friends, and I were greeted by the staff and got a table immediately surrounded by hand-painted Greek scenes. Their menu was extensive, with the iconic favorites such as gyros, souvlaki, and other comfort food dishes with vegetarian options. As appetizers, we decided on the Dolmadakia - Stuffed Grape Leaves, Saganaki Cheese, and Fried Calamari. For entrees, we opted for Sparta Beef Gyro Pita, Chicken Chipotle on Gluten-Free Wrap, Spanakopita, Hamburger, Pastichio, and Sparta Fries. For dessert, the rice pudding with a birthday candle arrived, and we shared a slice of carrot cake. Complimentary pita bread with garlic hummus started our meal. Our food was authentically made fresh using healthy ingredients with bold flavors, making it one of the most delightful meals. The portion was a healthy size. The service was friendly and gracious without being overbearing; our server was Carolina. The price was reasonable for the area. Another exceptional dining experience for the book, which we can recommend.

Day 1: Escape from NYC to Bear Mountain and Westchester County Eatery 1 of 2 I had the good fortune to visit New York City and stay with a friend from grad school who lives on the Upper West Side. At times, I felt like I was imposing, but I was reassured that I wasn't. With having lodging in such a great location, I decided it would only be fair for me to take care of the meals and some sightseeing. As it happens, I got a bodacious deal on a rented econobox at La Guardia ... for a price that you would get in the sticks elsewhere. I've driven around the Tri-state area before and thought that this would facilitate seeing things beyond what the MTA pass allowed. In driving across the stately George Washington Bridge at around noon, I knew that we would be eating in New Jersey. One stop would be the village of Ridgefield Park, a place in which I've had immigrant relatives who bordered on sitcom material. The plan was to go to a popular cheesesteak place that I had bookmarked, but it was closed. I couldn't believe it. So I continued to drive down Main Street. I saw a Greek restaurant and something about it was familiar. It was that I had bookmarked it based on a Yelp friend's review. The eatery is named Sparta Taverna. It's an unassuming place inside a brick storefront. Once inside, it's comfortable and unpretentious. We sat about two-thirds of the way toward the back. The server introduced herself and was very accessible at all times. The menu at Sparta is quite vast. There are two pages, and then there is also a separate lunch menu with specials. At any rate, I ordered a chicken souvlaki platter that, in addition to the skewers, came with a Greek salad and the potatoes how I like them. My friend ordered a more traditional gyro as well as a small side salad. I really liked my meal, as all of its pieces tasted like they should have ... and I eat Greek food whenever the opportunity presents itself. What was on the platter vanished fairly quickly. My friend liked the gyro and the side salad, but then my friend isn't as emotive when it comes to giving a yay or nay to food. At the beginning of the meal, we were brought small pita triangles surrounding a dollop of hummus. I really appreciated that. The prices at Sparta are very fair. The variety offered is very good. Even though the desserts looked tempting, we skipped on them to move on with the day. As you move away from the restaurant and this small hamlet, you come to realize that you are very close to New York City, given that one is cautiously avoiding ramps that would put you on the tolled direction of the George Washington Bridge back to the city. We would be heading up the Palisades Parkway in New Jersey. On the way out, I stopped to take a few photos. I noticed that there were photos in which Guy Fieri gave Sparta Taverna his seal of approval. I almost didn't need to see that because I find Guy Fieri grating and that he veers toward being a big "cafone." But, then, I've ended up at eateries that have been on his show without knowing that in advance, so history is repeating itself. I could definitely eat here again and recommend it. That said, Sparta Taverna gets 4 high and solid stars.

I've been coming here for the past 7 years. At first it was great, not sure if they changed the cook or the ingredients but the salads started looking a lot lighter and the last trip the shrimp was mush.

My husband and I just moved to the area and had a few friends and family members recommend Sparta as a great local spot to check out. We went on a random weekday and were surprised to find a good number of parties dining in. Since the area is full of seemingly great restaurants, I took it as a positive sign that so many were choosing to also dine at Sparta that evening. The menu is pretty robust and I don't know enough about Greek food to speak to its authenticity, but my heart went straight to the falafels. Some might consider it sacrilege to put both fries and falafels into a wrap, but I applaud such audacity to happily 'junkify' a dish. Realistically speaking, both of these fried items suffered a little in the crunch factor after sitting together in a tightly wound wrap, but the flavor and fun was definitely there. My husband enjoyed his gyro wrap just as well, though he encountered a few drier bites here and there. The side Greek salad we ordered (mainly to balance out all the fried food in my order) was delicious if a little smaller in size than we would've liked. The surprising highlight of our meal was the eggplant dip that we ordered as an appetizer. It was served cold but delicious, and the accompanying pita bread was warm and slightly buttery tasting. Never did I think I'd be writing home about how good the pita bread in a restaurant was, but neither of us could stop talking about it - both during and after the meal. The restaurant is surprisingly spacious, and service was polite and responsive to our needs. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area!

3 1/2 stars - Two of us had lunch here. Falafel wrap w/side salad was good although the falafel was overcooked & dry. I had the trio of dips - Eggplant, spicy feta, & hummus. Loved the eggplant dip, spicy feta was very salty which feta can be salty at times. Hummus was OK - kind of mealy. Very nice interior & service was good. If in the area again, I would definitely go back. Street parking only. BYOB.

Ordered moussaka and spanakopita which were wonderful! Reminded of my trip to the Greek islands. Excellent!

This has turned into my favorite Go-To place to have delicious Greek/Mediterranean food. I LOVE their falafel wraps and the customer service is TOP NOTCH. They are always very patient with me as u always order through the phone, the food never disappoints and I could eat every day at Sparta if I can. Also, have you heard of the owner's George recipe book? Well, he just released his book based on the dishes listed on the menu and it's AMAZING! Definite recommend this book, it's so easy to make their dishes. George was kind enough to share it with us. If you haven't tried Sparta yet, I highly recommend that you do. You're welcome :)

We had already had lunch elsewhere, but came here for coffee and dessert. I never really have cold coffee in the winter but I could not pass up a chance to have a freddo espresso again. I was truly so happy I found a place where I could order a proper Greek coffee! So I got the freddo espresso and told my friends to do the same, and we each got a few desserts. The mini bougatsa was delicious (get it warmed up!) and I tried a few bites of the frozen yogurt. Sooo good! On a Thursday afternoon the space was pretty packed! Maybe it was restaurant fatigue / too many social obligations at restaurants not of our choosing in this neighborhood. Maybe it was a hidebound fixation with our go-tos (where our experiences have become too numerous and repetitive to re-review in any interesting way). In any event, our recent first meal at Yasouvlaki gave us pangs of regret for having waited so long. It's not an innovative kitchen -- the kind of place that might win James Beard or Michelin recognition -- but based on what we tried, the food seems to be more than competent across the board, sometimes even excellent. I probably judge every Greek or Mediterranean restaurant by the quality of their roasted or grilled branzino preparation whether I mean to or not. It's my go-to main, one that makes me really happy when it's well made. Yasouvlaki's made me happy. I do so love a whole branzino, but Yasouvlaki's filet was beautifully prepared. The fish was sweet, the skin crispy, and it was served with rice pilaf (unobjectionable) and horta (good), a traditionally prepared boiled green vegetable, here made with dandelion greens. I love a well made horta. Kudos to Yasouvlaki for making it with something other than boring ol' spinach! The grilled half of a lemon was a perfect accoutrement for the dish. Lamb chops, served with roasted potatoes and Brussels sprouts, were also well executed, grilled to a perfect medium rare as the primary consumer requested. Roasted potatoes and Brussels were wholly completely competent. (Note that Brussels were not shaved and deep / air fried to a crisp, as seems to be the norm in restaurants, today. They were halved and oven roasted with olive oil, just as we make them at home. I happen to like this preparation; our kiddos prefer "restaurant Brussels sprouts" -- the greasier the better!) Moussaka was made with tender ground lamb. Both it and the kefte kabob were moist and flavorful. Beet salad was both simple and perfect, a generous portion of roasted beets, fresh arugula, fried halloumi, roasted walnuts, and balsamic reduction. Our table enjoyed everything with the warm, herbed pita wedges that came to the table at the start of the meal and a bottle of a 2021 Greek cabernet sauvignon (unusual, I think?), which was low tannin, but otherwise old vine in style, without the jammy red fruits of many new world style cabs. I didn't foot the bill, so I don't know what the markup was... but it was quite delicious and went well with all of our food, from the branzino to lamb. All in all, Yasouvlaki is a great place to have in our neighborhood and one to add to our rotation. Next time, I'm honing in on the lovely-looking meze.

5/5 -- Amazing Experience at The Gyro Project!…read more The Gyro Project never disappoints! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is warm, inviting, and full of great energy. Chris, the manager, always makes you feel right at home with his friendly welcome and top-tier customer service. Derrick in prep deserves a shout-out too -- you can tell he puts real care into every dish. Their gyros are hands-down my favorite item on the menu. Fresh, flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and consistently delicious. If you're stopping by for the first time, the gyros are a must-try -- highly recommended! Overall, amazing food, great people, and an even better vibe. Can't wait to go back!

Let me just say, I think Yelp should start allowing us to give half stars, but since I can't I will…read morejust give it four stars for overall experience. I have to say the customer service was outstanding. I'm aware that this is a new business and they have other locations popping up around the city so I hope my review gets read for some resolutions. One- if you don't have ingredients to make certain items or if you are promoting a new item to your menus, make sure all locations have the item available for purchase or at least say on your social media, this item is exclusive to a certain location. I wanted a hot chocolate on this freezing cold day in the city just to get a water down mess. I was told they didn't have whipped cream and I also can tell they weren't ready to provide this item because it rang up on the register as a latte, along with another employee having to show the girl how to ring it up. It was not worth the price I paid. I was furious and disappointed. I think it was close to $7. The good news though is that my food was phenomenal. I got a dip sampler that comes with pita bread and some sauces. I don't care for plain hummus so I asked could I substitute another dip and received an extra Tzatziki sauce. My favorite of them all was the Baba Ghanoush, The spicy feta was just ok. I also received a free taste of the Greek goddess and some green sauce I forgot the name of with a sample of some fries. Delicious! I wish I had spent my money on those fries rather than the awful cup of chocolate. The fries were amazing with the little sample I had. The chicken I brought extra with the dip sampler was also tasty. It was so juicy and flavorful I would come back to purchase again. I also ordered some mini bougasta to take home to my girls. They were happy with them. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have the cups of dessert they again had on the insta page, I was told they weren't sold at that location, although the girl who rang up my order didn't know what I was talking about I had to show her. I decided to just take everything to go although the place was nice to dine in. They had very pretty decor and it was very clean inside. So although I was mad about my cup of hot water and what tasted like soggy bread with nuts inside my cup, it doesn't even deserve to be call hot chocolate, I wouldn't let that stop me from visiting again. I mean again great food, great service, and really good healthy options. Prices are not cheap but what isn't in this expensive city we all trying to thrive in. Thumbs up on this one and Happy Yelping! AGAIN-DO NOT BUY THE HOT CHOCOLATE!

I went to Lefkes on a Friday night and made reservations ahead of time as were a party of 13. As…read moresoon as we arrived, we were seated right away since our table was already ready, which made everything start off smoothly. This is a really good Greek restaurant with a fun, lively atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes mix between seafood, chicken and steak, and everything was very good. The portions were decently sized just enough to leave you full, but not quite enough for leftovers. We ordered a bottle and asked the waiter separately if it could come out with sparklers. There was a slight off vibe at first and some slight attitude but as the night went on, the sever became much friendlier and attentive. The music throughout dinner was great, and some Middle Eastern songs came on that were actually really fun to dance to. After we ate, the energy picked up even more and we were able to get up and start dancing. This is definitely a perfect birthday spot if you want a mix of good food and a fun night out. Overall, we had an amazing time, great vibes and great music.
