No matter where one is, Christmas Eve, Noche Buena, Veille de Noël, Vigilia di Natale, and Paramoní Christoúgennon are more than tradition and family--they're all about food celebrated in a special way that often varies by country. Whether it's a roast turkey with endless sides, spicy meat stew, a seafood extravaganza, or even no-frills Kentucky Fried Chicken, there's no holding back when the season for feasting rolls around. Located on busy Broadway in Elmwood Park, we decided on our Christmas Eve dinner at this family-owned establishment. The reservation was easily made via OpenTable. Upon arrival as first-timers, my partner and I were greeted by the owner at Taverna Mykonos and got a table for two right away in the corner where the tables are close to each other inside their cozy, very dim-lit, and elegant dining room with Christmas music playing throughout. There's a full bar with an extensive selection of Greek wines, with approximately 80% sourced from regions across Greece, as well as other excellent choices from California and Spain. The menu featured both authentic traditional Greek dishes along with many other options. The restaurant bakes all of its bread as well as its desserts. Traditionally, the meat of choice served during a Greek Christmas meal is lamb and pork. For starters, we decided to share Keftedes (Greek-style seasoned meatballs served with tzatziki dipping sauce). For our main meal, we opted for Baby Roasted Lamb with roasted potatoes and Lamb Shank with tomato orzo. Complimentary bread started our meal, and we washed it down with a sparkling spring water product of Greece. Complimentary cookies were given to each table at the end of the meal. The food was fresh, using quality ingredients, tasty, and well-presented. We enjoyed the keftedes very much, as they were moist and complemented well with the tzatziki dipping sauce. The portion was reasonable. However, we were disappointed with the Baby Roasted Lamb, as it was mostly bones with only some pieces of edible meat. Service is professional, friendly, and fast. Super cute restaurant! The staff is professional and friendly. Not pictured, but you cannot leave here without having the Chicken Avgolemono soup. Warning: It's massive (and sooo good!) Overall, it was a really nice experience with authentic flavors and a beautiful ambiance. I went during the daytime, but I feel like the ambient warm lighting would be great at night too! They have tons of natural light illuminating the restaurant during the day. The portions are ample, so make sure you come hungry! read more

This place always has the best Greek food! I've only gotten takeout and I definitely want to go to the restaurant soon because it looks beautiful and the cocktails look delicious! My team and I did a group order for takeout and everything was great. They always make sure to include plenty of sauces, pita, and plasticware (forks/knives) for everyone. I got the gyro platter that came with pita, French fries and a salad with the gyro meat. Everything was so fresh and such a large portion. I was able to take half home for dinner. read more

The skirt steak was cooked nicely to medium-rare as ordered. It was a nice tasty cut and lightly seasoned. The staff were efficient and knowledgeable. The kitchen crew that brought out the food seemed like he took great care with the food, I appreciated that. The person that served water was super nice and helpful. The only negative for me was the French fries, the fries served to me were soggy and not tasty. It might have just been an off batch. But the mains are so good that I don't even care. Don't let the menu prices scare you away. Enough food to share for example among 2 or 3 people when ordering for instance a salad. I had the special Mango & Apple salad. Shared it with 2 others in addition to an appy they had ordered. Probably at least 10 entrees I could have ordered but chose the Chilean Sea Bass off the menu which was excellent as were all the entrees ordered by our dinner guest. No room for dessert but will definitely save room the next time we visit. read more

Much improvement since the last visit. I'm now a regular. Divine roasted Bronzino, tender delicious octopus. Spreads so tasty. Cocktails fabulous- especially this house cocktails. Been wanting to try this place for a while so gave it a shot. The atmosphere was nice and cozy which I liked a lot. Although the food was pretty good I was expecting more Greek style dishes on the menu but felt like there were more Italian style dishes. The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the service. It was really slow, and took over 20 mins for someone to come to our table. When they did they didn't ask us about ordering drinks or anything they just waited for our full order. When I picked what I wanted finally after 20 mins of waiting the item I picked they were out of which would have been nice to be told ahead of time. They also didn't ever really come check on our table throughout the evening. But overall it was still a pretty good night and I would go back! read more

Went for dinner with another couple early Saturday night. Service was fine. Had a bottle of good white Greek wine. Shared appetizer of 3 dips with warm pita which were very good. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, one was lamb chops and the others were various seafood dishes. The restaurant got progressively more crowded during our meal but we never felt rushed. This unsuspecting Greek place is a gem! My husband and I had been many years ago but just recently back with two friends and we initially booked reservations for the bar with the hopes we could move to a table later. The restaurant was packed but the unsuspecting bar was empty and wonderful. the bartender was extremely personable and fun to chat with between orders. I got a cucumber martini which was delicious and within mere sips I had a lovely buzz, which is how I knew we were going to have a great time. My husband got the dirty Greek martini and said it was great. We ordered two more drinks at the bar and the host told us a table was available and they happily transferred everything. For food we mainly ordered a spread of appetizers which didn't disappoint. The complimentary bread they served the table is worth mentioning because it was warm dense and unique in the best way. We order keftedes, spanakorizo, beets and zucchini chips. The meatballs were warm and properly tender and were served with tzatziki which was more of a yogurt texture which is common, but they seemed like normal meatballs not greek meatballs. The spanakorizo was the star of the show it had the most plump rice and a wonderful punch of dill which I can never get enough of. The beets were good, but average compared to other Greek beet dishes in Bergen county. The zucchini chips were also delicious and not oily which was great. However some of the zucchini slices were too thick cut which made them not fry up as well, the salt distribution was a little all over the place on them. For dessert we got the portokalopita which is my all time favorite Greek dessert and it was everything I hoped for. It was orangey with a wonderful vanilla hint to it, but I just wish it was a little bigger for the cost. All in all Mykonos was a great experience. I have no doubt my husband and I will be back for the occasional drink at the bar, where I know we'll be sure to have a good time! read more

Upscale Mediterranean dining. Had to leave my sweatpants at home for this dinner. Ambiance was dimly lit, lively and noisy. It's not the largest restaurant, is very busy and the tables are quite close together. I did feel a bit claustrophobic. They were taking professional photos for their social media so lots of flashing going on throughout the entire dinner. It seems they went to every table except us. Perhaps we just don't fit their demographic, or they're all good friends/long time customers. Hope it's the latter, it did appear a lot of the staff knew a lot of the customers and they all appear to have a great time. We did not get that same level of service. A bit disheartening for trying to have a nice night and for the amount of money we spent. Perhaps they were too busy with the regulars. I generally don't care about service and when our waitress came, she was nice enough. There was just a few too many missteps for an upscale type of place. When we ordered, we all wished we had bread or something to snack on before our appetizers came out. We didn't notice till well into our meal that every table had bread. So they forgot that. The level of noise and cramped quarters made it hard to see or flag down our waitress so it was difficult getting refills. Some food could have came out hotter but I will say the quality was excellent. Portion sizes could improve. We ordered a lot, including multiple appetizers, alcohol, drinks, entrees and desserts. I can't even post all the items since Yelp limits to 10 photos. Finished every last bite and felt like I could eat more. I guess the bread would have helped lol. We did ask at the end and she did apologize and said bread should be at every table. It's not like we're going to eat bread after our meal though. Overall, I would give them another go. I can't believe I haven't written a review about this place before! I've ordered from here before but never thought to review.. Ordered take out from here on a Thursday evening. My husband got the lamb shank and I got the filet mignon..the lamb shank was SO big, it came in those half catering trays. First- the filet mignon...cooked medium and it was honestly so perfect. Soft and pink on the inside with a side of their BANGING garlic mashed potatoes...just thinking about it is making my mouth water! The side of steamed vegetables paired so well with the meat and the potatoes it makes me want more...such a simple dish yet so fulfilling and memorable Second- the lamb shank...was huge. The meat fell off the bone..which is what everyone wants. Obviously. It came with orzo that was mixed in a red wine and tomato sauce..safe to say this was paired perfectly! My husband and I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary which is also New Years Day. We got ready too soon and showed up 20 minutes early for our 6pm reservation. It wasn't busy yet, so they were able to seat us immediately. They brought us glasses of champagne for our anniversary and gave us time to check out the menu. We ordered the keftedes (meatballs over tzatziki) and raw oysters. They only offer blue point, which aren't my favorite, but they were good. The meatballs are fantastic and their tzatziki is some of the best I've ever had. The restaurant started to get busy and we noticed our service slow down. Our server was super friendly and kind, but I think she was one of two or three servers last night, so it was hard to get her attention for more drinks and we waited a while to order the rest of our meal. The entrees took a while to come out, but they were fresh and delicious. At the end of the meal we took a peek at the dessert menu. They have a bunch of options for dessert and a large selection of dessert drinks. We'll try to save more room next time to try something out. Overall, this is a really cute and romantic place for dinner. Its dimly lit and there are comfy pillows on each booth. The food is worth the wait if it gets busy. This is one of the nicer places around open during Covid and if you're looking for some really good Greek style fish, there aren't many other good options (outside of Oceanos as I've heard this is their sister restaurant.) I've gotten takeout from here twice. They have their dinner menu during lunch but with reduced prices. Service was nice and they were prompt. The first time I got their Horiatiki (the actual Greek salad with no lettuce) with grilled octopus as I heard it's a specialty of theirs. The octopus was cooked perfectly and the feta was excellent. I'm curious what brand they used. The vegetables were very good though the only thing I disliked was how many chopped bell peppers. If I knew there was going to be that many, I probably would have ordered it without it but next time. Portion size was good and it would make a filling lunch if you didn't want the octo either. The other time I went with the grilled swordfish steak lunch special with spanakorizo (spinach rice.) I believe it was 15$ less than the dinner version. The fish was cooked perfectly and the spinach rice was equally good. Both were fantastic though perhaps a little salty (I do tend to find Greek fish a bit salty as they use a lot of lemon/capers.) The portion size was massive and it makes a substantial lunch or a light dinner. Both of these were served with bread (something pumpernickel-esque) which is good. Both of the dishes I have had were excellent though I'm not surprised with their pedigree. Great place. read more

My wife and I decided to try Taverna Mykonos on the spur of the moment this evening. We were greeted by a the valet service, before entering an elegantly appointed restaurant. Modern furniture and romantic lighting. The staff that welcomed us were very pleasant and we were seated at a Covid safe booth. (Plexiglass between the tables) Our waiter was pleasant, extremely knowledgeable and proud of the food. He made excellent recommendations. We went with a trio of dips, of which the eggplant was the standout. (The caviar dip was also quite nice) We also had the grilled octopus appetizer, it was incredible. Wonderful texture and flavor, a slight smokiness from the grill. My wife enjoyed the Prasini salad that she chose, it was even served on a chilled dish. For entrees, my wife selected the lamb chops and found them to be perfectly tender and cooked medium as requested. They gave a nice two or even three bone chop, unlike some places that cut them too thin. For my entree, the waiter recommended the Chilean sea bass cooked in a secret menu style. It was served with a champagne sauce, spinach, and risotto. The sea bass was cooked to absolute perfection, tender buttery fish and a crispy skin layer. The risotto was perfect for a cold winter's night, rib sticking delicious. For dessert, our waiter recommended galaktoboureko. It was decadent!! Jiggly in texture, like a Greek flavored flan and topped with ice cream. A truly great dessert! From start to finish, Taverna Mykonos was a wonderful experience! read more

We wanted to try a new restaurant that had a good selection of fish for a Friday evening out during Lent and Taverna Mykonos was our pick. Happy to say it was an outstanding choice. The food was really delicious. We started with a grilled calamari/octopus appetizer that was perfect. Not chewy or over charred...very flavorful. My wife had the scallops for her main course and I had the halibut special. Everything was cooked to perfection and brought to the table at the perfect pace. We didn't feel rushed or abandoned. Our waiter was helpful, friendly and on point. Couldn't pass up dessert and it was the ideal punctuation to an excellent meal. I highly recommend Taverna Mykonos and we will be back. read more

Go here for Sex (in Santorini) and a delicious dinner!! I was very impresssed with how fresh and delicious everything was. My favorite things were the names of the cocktails...donkey ride and sex in santorini...that helped set the tone for a fun night of laughs! Food wise our table of 12 ordered a bunch of apps to share and I was hangry so forgot to take pics....the French fries and eggplants zucchini chips were seasoned amazingly and blew Varka away...The tomatoes cucumber salad, meatballs in the red sauce and in the Tasiki sauce were delicious...my husband said they were better then his meatballs and he legit makes the best so coming from him that's an amazing compliment....also the shrimp was very good. My main was the pasta with muscles and calamari and I think it needed more salt. They were kind enough to provide a sample of desserts...but I don't really eat sweets so can't say how those were but they looked beautiful! read more
