Greek cuisine has absorbed influences from various empires and cultures. It is so good because of the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients like ripe tomatoes, herbs, and creamy feta cheese. From cooking to salad dressings, Greek olive oil made from lemon, basil, and oregano is their liquid gold. Located on a busy Boulevard in the heart of Hasbrouck Heights, I finally got the opportunity to stop in at this BYOB family-owned/operated establishment. Upon entering for lunch after 4 years, Sofia's Mediterranean Grill, named after the owner's mom, I was greeted by the staff. I got a booth, immediately knowing how they get crowded. The inside evoked a cozy and warm vibe with Greek music playing throughout. Outdoor dining is available, weather permitting. Their menu features an array of traditional Mediterranean dishes, offering a variety of soups, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, meats from the grill, seafood cooked various ways, and entrees cooked from the oven. I decided on the Greek salad with grilled chicken. The food was authentic, fresh using the finest ingredients, delicious, and prepared simply, which is exactly what I was looking for. The portion was healthy. The service is always friendly and welcoming. I got to connect with the owner, Nick, a fellow Astorian, to catch up about the old neighborhood. The price was reasonable. If one's craving the vibrant flavors of the Mediterranean, then look no further. One doesn't need to book a flight to Greece to enjoy authentic meals.

Absolutely loved this place. When we first got in the staff immediately sat us down and were sure to be quick and attentive. We order the pork gyro and the chicken platter. Both delicious were cooked perfectly. The tzatziki sauce was phenomenal. The menu you had a ton of different options that we would've loved to try. This place is perfectly in between fancy and causal. Definitely check it out if you are in the area. It's also BYOB.

First time visitors to this fabulous restaurant and they treated us like regulars... friendly, accommodating, fast service yet not rushed. They do not take reservations- we got there by 6:30pm on a Saturday and sat before the dinner rush. The food was delicious, fresh and plentiful. We were 3 couples and they had no problem giving us 3 bills. The water's memory of our orders was epic- didn't write down a thing & got it all correct!! Will return! .... check this place out!

This is exactly what you want from Mediterranean food. Everything was delicious and prepared just right. I especially liked the grilled octopus. Service was solid. I came on a Tuesday night with two friends and we didn't need a reservation; we were seated right away.

Back at this fine establishment. First time trying the skirt steak and after probably 100 visits, how did I miss this meal. It was spectacular, soft, and tasty. Service as always was great. Inside can be lo nous but they have outside seating also. It's a byob. Grab your favorite wine and a friend, enjoy a great meal.

Everything on point. Food, staff, vibe. Only wish they were closer to me so I can eat this stuff every day.

Grilled pork chops over rice pilaf with onions

Was going to a recital with friends on Saturday and our group of seven decided to stop for an early dinner at Sofia's. I am so glad that we did. We ordered a variety of appetizers and meals (I tried the salmon croquette app and grilled pork chops) and all thoroughly enjoyed them. They had a lot of good choices on the menu, plus specials, all reasonably priced. Service was good and our waiter made sure to explain everything and answer any questions. The restaurant was packed, another sign of good food. I will be back!

There were six Dolmades a moment before. Ha!

I am extremely picky, especially service and cleanliness. Sophia's exceeded at both. We were warmly greeted by Tony and escorted to our table. We sat outside which was lovely. Our drinks arrived just as we finished reading the menu. We had fried calamari, which was excellent. It was a lightly coated, perfectly seasoned and fried just right. The dolmades are just as they should be. My entree was the lamb burger. It was cooked to the medium requested and the rest of the ingredients had a perfect balance so they played nicely together, none overpowering the other. My husband had the chicken gyro. He raved. And the fries... I've never had anything like before. Excellent! Finally, for dessert we had rice pudding which was, thankfully, not to sweet and a delicious recommended walnut cake. On our way out, we found Sophia to be sweet and gracious. Back to Tony. If you visit Sophia's, ask for Tony. Not only is he fastidious about his job but he is also very entertaining. We were lucky to get him and will request him in future.

    Falafel! Delicious!

Turkish cuisine is a unique combination of flavors, spices, and herbs developed over thousands of years, influenced by the Central Asian nomads and Arabic, Persian, Italian, French, and Eastern European cultures. The town of Carlstadt has mainly residential private homes, with a spattering of condos and garden apartments. The main shopping area is all of about three blocks long on both sides of the street. Translated from the Turkish language, meaning sultan, we have come to this family-owned/family-run establishment located on Hackensack Street since 2006 for Saturday dinner. The reservation was easily made by Google Assistant. Upon entering this hidden gem called Hünkar Restaurant as first-timers, my partner, our friends, and I were greeted by the staff inside a cozy room, where ethnic pictures and decorations as well as the music all add to the vibe. A great view of the NYC skyline is visible from their enclosed back patio. Their menu features Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine with a modern twist and serves alcohol. As an appetizer, we decided on the Kibbeh (Icli Kofte), Calamari (Kalamar), and Cigarette Borek (Sigara Boregi). For our main meal, we opted for Chicken Saute (Taouk Sote), Shrimp Kebab, Lamb Shish Kebab (Kuzu Sis Kebab), and Chicken Shish Kebab (Tavuk Kebab). All Kebab meal accompanied by rice, char-grilled tomatoes, peppers, and a small salad. Warm, fluffy pida bread with a crisp crust started our meal. Every dish bursts with authentic flavor and is beautifully presented, from the fact that Turkish families from all over the area eat here. The staff is warm, welcoming, and very professional; our server was Akincan "John," the owners' son. The price was comparable to the area with the right portion. We can recommend this place.

We had a large group, and they seated us at 2 separate and crowded tables in the side room, which was less than ideal (with a reservation). It also got really hot because the room was packed. They were pushing us to order everything family style, but everyone wanted to order individually. The two of us weren't super hungry, and asked for our entrees to be on a separate check before ordering, which they would not do. Since I knew we were going to end up splitting the check with the one table, I ended up getting a more expensive entree to make up for the apps and drinks we weren't having (I already had a drink from the bar and my husband doesn't drink). I settled on the special lobster carbonara (which I think was $75). Good, but overpriced. My husband had the filet mignon - it was cooked as requested but we prefer more seasoning. A friend passed her grilled scallops over to us to finish - I took one bite and it tasted like ammonia. I discreetly spat it out. For her sake, I hope the rest didn't taste like that. The atmosphere was loud and hard to have conversations. They did a conga line around the restaurant later in the evening. Not really my scene. Service was slow and it didn't seem like they could handle big groups, even when split up. We ended up staying here for about 3 hours. We ended up leaving before we were even offered dessert. Also, keep in mind they have valet parking.

My advice with the hot sauce: get a packet on the side so you can control the heat. That sauce is powerful. I don't know if there are spice ghosts in it but it can be too much. Boo. The rice can be hit or miss depending on the time of day. When it's busy and fresh, it's great. Later at night, the leftover rice can be a little dry. I recommend getting the food to go. It's quick, affordable, and iconic. If you've had the cart version - very likely during a lunchtime rush eagerly awaiting a fresh hot-off-the-grill platter while standing in line with salivating hunger, or stumbling around NYC streets late at night in a state of cheerful inebriation - you probably won't be able to retrieve the same satisfaction from the limbic recesses of your brain, as that particular alchemy of anticipation, irresistible street food scent, and a dash of city chaos is not something that can be bottled in a more domesticated experience. So no, the franchise concept into a fast-casual sit-in restaurant won't replicate the Halal Guys of your memory. But what you do get is a more dignified dining experience involving tables, chairs, and climate control. It's the food cart equivalent of realizing one actually appreciates concert venues with seats. Not saying the GA floor pit wasn't fun, but having crossed over into comfortable suburbanite territory, I've made peace with my lack of desire to stand in long lines or eat my food sitting on a curb. We came here after shopping at the Costco located in the same plaza, and ordered a chicken platter, beef gyro platter, waffle fries, and a mango citrus refresher. The meat was a touch cold and the protein portion leans modest, but it was non-greasy, and piled with the salad fixin's and pita bread, made for a balanced and filling meal. The waffle fries are amazing! Perfectly crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside, and a good size for the price.
