Here is why: Cypress Lawn bought and took over Olivet Cemetery...and more, cremation businesses and funeral homes. It's now being run like a large for profit operation. It's like a car lot where some people are working on commission trying to make the most money. You are assigned a young sales person depending on your last name. Gone are the warm, friendly, mature adults. The first young man I spoke with after Cypress Lawn took over told me my mother couldn't be buried with my father, though she was assured of that right when she bought the plot. This is a different story than what the people at Olivet Cemetery told me before the change. My mom died in 2022 and I was just waiting for the house to be sold so I could bury her. Cypress gave me misinformation. They tried to upsell me. They did not follow through on their word (the chairman of the board included), nor on the commitments made to me in writing though I wrote a letter to the entire Board of Directors and the chairman - who finally wrote back and made promises and commitments they did not bother to keep. I've reached out many times and my dear mother, a well-known Dolger Senior center cafe volunteer and a respected public servant still remains unburied despite her right of internment. My father was a decorated war hero. This place is all about the money and as long as you have lots of money to put out to go along with their service model they will fawn over you.. My parents bought a plot at all Olivet cemetery in 1996 before it was bought by Cypress Lawn and new management has implemented new and changed policies. This is such a wrong and deeply upsetting situation for my family and I. I just want to honor my mom's final wishes. I shouldn't have to call multiple times, receive different stories, take the time to write to the entire board of directors and chairman of the board... Be made empty promises by the chairman of the board only to have to carry it further, next step is to find other entities, talk to the Better Business Bureau and whatever governing agency there is over cemeteries. This has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my life... We just want to honor our mother's last wish and for the cemetery to provide the necessary information and schedule to get her placed with her husband as she wanted.

It's huge, the roads are very smooth to drive thru. Lots of curves and turns but clean ones. They have all around maintenance staff to care for the facility and grounds. They don't have trees around, so no leaves, branches or seedlings, so it's really clean! You get a fabulous clear view looking over Daly City/Colma. They have name location place stones for each section so it's easy to find your loved one and each section have their own row letter. Along the lawn edges, there are faucet heads for ppl to wash their hands. There aren't bugs that crawl on your offerings (BUT BE AWARE OF SEAGULLS!!) We were at the highest hill, definitely worth the price my uncle paid. (As I mentioned above, you get an amazing view) Today's weather was high winds and chance of rain. Luckily, it was only sun and high winds. I didn't dress warm like you're in Chicago, which I regret because I was shivering!! Last week, I got semi sunburn on my t-zone and chest at the other Cypress Lawn & Chinese Cemetery, I came prepared today with sunscreen & scarf. We burned our Joss papers like all Chinese families do, there's no hiding or avoiding the smoke and ashes. But it's all part of the festivities. Another pro! She was patient, empathetic, gave great suggestions, guided us through the whole process and was so caring. They allowed us to decorate the chapel a few hours before, had ample seating and parking and a huge projector screen for slideshows and great speakers. I would definitely recommend Garden Chapel to my family and friends. They are not only in it for financial gain, but they truly care about your experience with them. The workers here are amazing from the front office folks to the groundskeepers. They all take pride in working for the cemetery and keeping it running very well. We recently held a funeral in the chapel, and although it is a bit of a do it yourself experience it worked out really well. There is seating for about 100 people and HDMI hook ups to use a large screen TV for a photo show if that is what someone wants. It's also a beautiful cemetery up on a hill with a nice view.

As an adult, I've had the responsibility of taking a more hands-on role in funeral planning, and I'd like to share three experiences. The first was for my uncle--while not related by blood, he was absolutely family. There was significant family drama leading up to the service, including a grandchild sending threatening messages. When the staff became aware of the situation, they handled it with professionalism and care, arranging for support to be on standby if needed. Thankfully, it wasn't necessary, but Paul was fully prepared to take care of it. The second experience was a little over a year ago, when I was making arrangements for my own mother. Paul, the owner, sat with me through the process. He and his staff were incredibly professional and compassionate. Paul made sure I understood all my options and gently reminded me to take my time--he made it clear he was there for me, without rushing me at all. The third experience was about two months ago, when I was there in my professional capacity as a minister. I was asked to support a husband making arrangements for his wife. I watched as a man, in deep grief, struggled to process what was being said. For the first time, I wasn't the family member making decisions--I was observing. The staff at Chapel of the Highlands handled everything with patience, professionalism, and genuine care. Walking through these difficult moments is never easy, but it brings comfort knowing that Paul leads a team that is caring, hardworking, and professional. While I wish I never had to return under such circumstances, I know I will continue to trust and recommend their services to anyone going through such a difficult time.

There was a scarf around her neck that seemed to be hiding something. I was so upset by the time they finished arguing that I couldn't see my mother. I felt like I couldn't properly say goodbye to her. It turned out that my siblings had an unannounced visit planned with my mother that they didn't want me to attend. The office girl apologized several times to me, for making a "terrible mistake" by telling me about the 5 p.m. viewing. But it wasn't the mistake of telling me about the viewing; it was the mistake of not letting me see my mother when I arrived and then making me stay in the lobby, telling me I couldn't see her. I would never, never, ever recommend this place, and I believe both Nick H and the office clerk should be fired immediately. **************************************************** Thank you for your response, Paul Larson. When we got there we were overwhelmed by the lush beauty of the cemetery. The green rolling hills and breathtaking views, all the many burial sites added a very deep penetrating feeling. Everything is beautiful beyond words and the sacred silent hush over everything brought a reverent awe. My grandfather whose real name was Hertz Tzvi Smolack, his grave along with all the other oldest graves were kept very pristine. Beautiful Jewish history was so greatly felt. His daughter, my mother Elsie (Marlene) should be mentioned here along with her father. This is the very place we choose to have her to rest. He is survived by me his granddaughter Joanie Stahl, his great-grandchildren Derek and Luke.

I remember watching his segment on KPIX-TV when we lived in the South Bay (San Jose). He was the produce expert. He liked to give his viewers advice what fruits and vegetables were bargains and which to avoid. * Joe Carcione - Bay Area TV Personality. We wanted to see one particular famous baseball player but I was surprised to see a list of former MLB players who are also laid to rest here: * George Kelly - first baseman who played most of his MLB career for the New York Giants. * Babe Pinelli - third baseman and umpire in the MLB was mostly with the Cincinnati Reds from 1922 to 1927. * Hank Sauer - left fielder in MLB playing mostly for the Cincinnati Reds from 1941 through 1959. He also had a short career with the SF Giants The one being the most well known, of course, is: * Joe DiMaggio - American baseball center fielder who played his entire 13-year career in MLB for the New York Yankees. Joe was born in Martinez CA. Now I don't know much about his baseball career but I do know about his short-lived marriage to Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. There were a lot of politicians buried here too including: * George Moscone - 37th mayor of San Francisco CA from January 1976 until his assassination in November 1978. He was a former Board of Supervisors member, served in the California State Senate from 1967 until becoming Mayor. He served as Majority Leader in the Senate.
