The partial highlight that ended up costing me $762.50 I booked a partial highlight service and provided inspiration photos in advance showing a brunette with face-framing highlights. After nearly five hours in the salon, the service was completed and I immediately raised concerns regarding the harsh lines, visible demarcation, and lack of blending between my natural color and the highlighted sections. I also asked whether additional blending, such as a root melt, would help soften the result. Rather than discussing those concerns, there seemed to be confusion about what I was seeing, so I ultimately asked that photos be taken so we could review the result together. The attached straight-hair photos were taken at that time, before I left the salon. That's when "one" area was acknowledged and a few lowlights were added. However, the broader concerns regarding the harsh lines, visible demarcation, and lack of blending throughout the rest of my hair were largely dismissed. I was ultimately told the result was "not that bad" and that I might simply need time to adjust to having highlights. That response is ultimately why I did not return for corrective work. Had my concerns been acknowledged, I would have been open to working toward a solution. Instead, I left questioning how the issues could be corrected when they were not being recognized in the first place. The attached wavy-hair photos were taken two weeks later. By that point, the harsh lines, visible demarcation, and lack of blending were even more noticeable, leaving me embarrassed and self-conscious about my hair. I sought a second opinion from another salon, where the stylist immediately saw the same issues I had raised during my appointment. They explained that significant corrective color work would be required, expressed sympathy for the experience, and were unable to understand how I had left the salon with a result like this. The correction required additional highlights, lowlights, toning, and blending to soften the harsh lines and create a more natural result. Initial service - $300 Corrective service - $462.50 Total spent for an outcome that was not my initial goal - $762.50 Attempts to contact the salon owner through both Instagram and the salon's website gmail received no response. read more

Been a customer for over a year and have enjoyed coming here! I've loved having Cosette as a stylist - she's very attentive to your hair needs and wants, and is a great person to chat with. The salon itself is such a quaint, cheerful atmosphere with its colorful decor. I appreciate their efforts to practice eco-friendly habits, hence the "green" in their name. Their prices are also very reasonable and vary depending on the stylist's level. They frequently have sales or discounts that help too! I started going to this salon in 2011 and STILL get my hair done there. It's a super cute place that has hair dryers hanging from the ceiling and is all about being eco friendly. I have had Alli and Nour cut and color my hair most recently. They always make sure to understand what I want and that I am happy with the look. This review is long overdue, but I've been a client of Green Alley Salon for well over 2 years. I've mainly seen Sarah and she does a kickass job with my hair every time. The prices for a haircut & style are so reasonable for the Austin area. I LOVE the location of this salon, it feels so much like a home and not a commercial business, tucked away behind the trees. Another great experience at Green Alley Salon! My hair is crazy thick and I let it get super long without a professional cut for over a year, gee it might have been 2! I went to Alli with some pictures, she took her time listening and talked it out with me the whole time. It was a huge change I was doing so that was very important. I swear to baby Jesus her hands were made to do facials. She's extremely knowledgeable and sweet and I love that I can trust her with my skin - she's not just out to get your money. Make an appt and thank me later!!! Green Alley did updos for myself, all my bridesmaids, and my mom for my wedding and I swear all my girls were just beaming!! We did a trial in the salon and Sarah was so patient and went above and beyond to help me figure out the best style for me. They arrived at my wedding venue in Dripping Springs even earlier than I did and had everything set up. They even helped our struggling groomsmen fix their hair and for that I'm so grateful. I have been to this salon twice and would highly recommend it! I have a lot of grey hair and was tired of having to dye it every few weeks. Alley found a great solution for me at my first appt. The color she uses is not a highly saturated color so the grays are not as obvious when the grow out. It has made a huge difference on how often I need to go. My scalp is very sensitive to chemicals. I told her this on my first visit and she continues to be very aware of this. Offering less harsh product options. Did I mention her prices are very reasonable. read more

It's truly a space where I was made to feel not just comfortable, but excited to be having my hair cut. Finally after going to a bunch of different salons over the past five or so years transitioning my hair color from very dark back to blonde, I found Sarah! Sarah did an amazing job with my foils and color and haircut! She evened out the orangeish color on the ends of my hair that were not blending with the rest, with a special product. I've also never found a stylist who could color and cut well, and I'm so pleased she can! Sarah works quickly, is attentive and does a great job I'm so happy! I'm so glad that I discovered Green Alley Salon three years ago-- they are now my go-to salon in Austin. After moving to Austin for school in 2010, I continued going back to Houston to have my hair done for the longest time as it was hard to find a salon to trust. Sarah is my stylist and she does my highlights and extensions every other month. I have always had an amazing experience and love that the stylists listen and are always looking for ways to improve my experience. Holy cow. Best haircut of my life. I've been to a few salons in my life and a lot of barber shops, but I have never, by FAR, had a better haircut. I can not recommend green alley any higher. They were kind, attentive, and remarkably skilled. All of the employees were polite and professional. The setting, atmosphere and environment were also top notch and relaxing. The salon was SO hot when I got there that I thought I was melting. Alli cut my hair just fine, but even after I told her that I was following Curly Girl Method and using no sulfates, silicones, or heat, she then used a leave-in with silicone in it by Mizani. I didn't know until after I looked at the bottle and I had to tell her that it had one in it! She acted like she had no idea. I can't believe this is the salon owner. Then, the worst part, was that she started to curl my hair with a wand! The whole point of following the Curly Girl method is to avoid sulfates, silicones, and heat styling. How can this place claim to be Deva stylists and not know the basics of what Deva/CGM is? They messed up the billing SO badly. Alli and the other stylist had NO idea how to run their checkout system. They had to take my credit card number down on paper and then ring it up hours later. Then, I found out that Alli added an extra $15 tip for herself. I called back and had her remove it only to find out that she only refunded $5. Their receptionist had to refund the remaining $10 the next day. So unprofessional. You couldn't pay me to go back to this salon. read more

I found Green Alley by way of the DevaCurl website and it was highly rated. I have wavy hair, so I booked a DevaCut and color. When I got there it was warm and not very well lit. I was thoroughly disappointed in stylist Patricia. She ran 15 minutes late to start. She bleached my hair and threw some color on it in the wash bowl... after she cut and dried my hair, it looked like she had dyed the tips of my hair blue, and the middle was blonde... She had not used enough color for my long hair, so she dyed it again, but now my hair looks black and you can't see the color unless you are in the sunlight. I arrived for my 1:30pm appointment and left at 9pm with black, frizzy, unstyled hair for $230. Did I mention she started brushing my wavy hair with the deva curl diffuser hand attachment, making my wavy hair super frizzy. Alli from the salon reached out and offered a refund. read more

Wonderful, fun, "happy place" salon! I have driven past Green Alley Salon for years, it's in my neighborhood, but never took the time to stop and check it out. I'm glad I finally slowed down enough to stop in and make an appt. I have been going here to see Alli for about 3-4 months now and I absolutely love her, her professionalism, her concern for my budget and approval before she does anything! I'm not too "creative" when it comes to my hair, I usually do the same style, color, year after year. In these past few months, I have never loved my hair more! My hair hasn't changed drastically, but the little changes in ways to color and style it have made a HUGE difference! All while being done in MY budget! Alli is amazing and if there is anything I don't like or want to change, she has no problem making that happen. She is more concerned with customer satisfaction than profit, I really feel she asks the right questions and actually listens to my answers! The salon itself is adorable, such a happy, "green" place to be! You get a smile on your face just walking into Green Alley! From the sweet receptionist to all of the stylists I've seen there, they are all super friendly and generally happy people. I love having a new salon (new to me) to go to, sometimes we just need a change, not for bad reasons, but sometimes change is good, scary but good. Update: I reached out the them and they responded today. Very sweet about it and were willing to provide a refund, even a gift. Original post: It was time for the "big" cut. I had a consultation and chatted with the stylist. She measured and provided a point of cut. I had informed her I wanted to keep it as long as possible, below the shoulder. She said she'd do a little texturizing. I said I'm a on the go person. My hair is thick and full. The cut is at my shoulder. She did a lot of texturizing, in my opinion. I learned texturizing is the same as thinning. One side is slightly longer than the other. One side feels thinner than the other. I don't fix (blow dry, straighten) my hair daily, now I need to figure it out. The cut includes a shampooing and head massage. Not happy with the outcome, but hair grows back. I enjoy supporting local places, but unfortunately, I will continue the search for a place that fits me best. Stylist was sweet, everyone was nice. read more

I recently moved to North Austin and needed to find a new Deva Curl Certified stylist, stat! I needed to book quickly before a trip to Cancun and was a bit worried that there wasn't availability to fit me in on my schedule. The front desk staff took down my number and went out of their way to make sure that they could work something out for me. I wasn't sure if they were legit but low and behold they texted me back, informing me they hadn't forgotten about me and were still working on it. They were able to fit me in after all! Now on to the haircut. The place is very cute, homey but modern at the same time. Nicely decorated and professional without being stuffy. Tinsley took care of me and made my hair look outstanding. She was very easy to work with, gave me lots of good tips and listened to what I wanted. My boyfriend remarked that it was one of my best haircuts! Post $90 "highlighting" (turned out to be a poorly done root touch up where they "bumped" my roots without even asking me or my knowing) I spoke with the owner of the salon b/c my roots where still dark blonde w/ some strands of a little lighter blonde. (You may view the picture of my hair; I posted it) She stood by her "color specialist" saying that I needed to have my "roots bumped" or my hair double processed and she knew I "was on a budget"! Then she said that I could come back in the next day to assess what I needed with a different stylist who was blonde. I rushed there after work to get there at their strict time and sat for an additional 30min. She told me not to worry that they would "take care of me". When I was brought to the back the new stylist (with another stylist in training I guess?) did my consultation saying, in front of the owner, that it was apparent and that my highlights had not been don't thick enough and that she had "bumped my roots" over the highlights which toned them down even more. All I needed was thicker highlights. I arranged to come back and let the training stylist "fix" my hair the fallowing week and was assured that they would "take care of" me again. The following week I returned to have them fix what had previously been done. I arrived on time and was brought straight back this time with the, now by herself, training stylist and the owner. As directed I put on a smock and sat down. As the training stylist was brushing out my hair the owner stood next to us and proceeded to tell me that I would be charged $45 for that visit because the old stylist was "no longer with" them and I had a new stylist but she again knew I was "on a budget" so she wanted to tell me before they started! I began to take off the smock and said I was not going to pay that. She then said that she could do it for" just the coast of the dye" for $25. I said that that was fine I understood her position and I would just file with visa to have my money returned under Visa's satisfaction guaranteed clause. She was very quick, at that point, to ask if I wanted her to just return my money in full right now. I said I thought that would behoove everyone involved. While she was returning my money to my card she said that she didn't want to lose me as a customer. My answer to that is simple. Learn how to do business better. The customer may not always be right but if you admit fault truthfully you should pay what is due. ... and this tip for free: Don't call your customers CHEAP! $100 for a root touch up is good money! Save people the time and money you cost me and tell them their money is no good to you! Thanks for giving me my money back because you knew it would cost you more not to and NOT because it was the right thing. I will take my no good money elsewhere. read more

I have found Hair Nirvana! I have been a "Hair Salon Slut" , frequenting different salons for every cut or color, chasing the Groupon and Living Social bargain. Those days are over. I have been to Green Alley twice within the last month. I found them on Yelp, they had good reviews and are conveniently located. I initially called for a last minute appointment. The gal who answered was genuinely nice and tried to accommodate me, she took my name and number and called me back within 5-10 minutes, even though she couldn't see me that day, she asked me questions and suggested I see Adrienne, who specializes in curly hair and the Diva system. She was amazing and I love the Diva brand. My hair hasn't looked this good in ages, and I have gotten lots of compliments. I had my hair highlighted and styled yesterday, again another great experience. The decor is fun and vibrant. The staff offers you a refreshment, such as water, soda, beer or wine and they also had homemade lemonade out on the counter and fresh brownies- yummy. While I was getting my hair done, I watched the other stylists and customers and every customer left with great looking hair, quality stylish cuts. read more

This is by far the best curly hair salon I have been to in Austin! They have several Deva-educated stylists and were very respectful of the fact that I follow the "curly girl method" (i.e. I don't use products with silicones or sulfates). Kiran has cut my hair once and colored it twice and she has done an incredible job both times! We cut 8 inches off my hair into a "curly bob" and it looks incredible! She always strives to make sure I get exactly the hair I want. She is the only hair stylist I've seen that will give me the color I want!! And Alli and her team always go above and beyond to make sure I am 100% satisfied with my hair. This place is such a gem! Edit: Kiran is now at her own salon (called Habit Salon). Kiran really listens to me and works hard to always give me what I want (or what I didn't realize that I wanted!). She is a natural with people and can work wonders on your hair! I feel like this place is like a gem, hidden off parmer & Mcneil. If you have wave or curl and you don't want to spend $100 on a fancy haircut, go. Most places that do "curly cuts" charge starting at $100, you can make it out of here for $75 which essentially is a steal if you're rockin curls. (I put moderate on price because they aren't ripping you off and it is a deal). (Regular cut is $55). I'm giving this place 5 stars because I feel like Adrienne really tries to go above and beyond the normal salon experience for people who are willing to style their hair naturally. I say this as a curly girl, someone who styles their hair curly 99% of the time. If you only wear your hair curly 10% of the time and you go to this salon, I'm not sure if Adrienne's expertise will be worth your while since you typically wear your hair straight. You need to embrace your wave and curl to truly benefit from a styling session/cut with Adrienne. That said, if you have curly hair or natural wave and you've been struggling but your'e wiling to EMBRACE some tips you've never heard of and/or desire to have a better cut for your kind of hair, go. I've been wearing my hair curly 99% of the time for almost 5 years now. I've never had a fancy haircut (something at or above $100).
