I found Teresa (the T in T & J) at Aveda Institute. She fixed my daughter's hair after she cut a huge chunk out herself. My daughter has mixed curly hair. Teresa was both knowledgeable and helpful, giving us tips on products and other hair care solutions (not sleeping on cotton pillowcases as it can absorb moisture). So now we followed her to T and J. I hate to leave a negative review because my experience at the salon was a pleasant one. So let me start with the positive, Niikki was my stylist, she was very professional, prompt, courteous, and efficient. I was extremely comfortable with Nikki. However, I got my hair straightened Wednesday evening and I was finished about 7:30 pm on July 10. I left made an exchange at Ulta, went home wrapped my hair and packed my bags because I was leaving to go out of town the next morning. I got up at 5am on July 11 and my hair was a fro. I was disappointed because not one person saw me with my hair straightened because it was already a fro in less than 24 hours. $70 for silk press and $15 for a trim. Love, love this place. They play gospel music through the speakers and it feels like home. I've had a last minute appointment twice. They squeezed me in each time. I decided never to get my hair straightened again because I'm afraid it won't curl back. But I will be back for a trim soon! Speaking of trims, if you ask any hair stylist if you need a trim, they will say yes almost every time just to charge you more money. But Mrs. Rita looked me over and told me I should need one in a few more weeks. She didn't try to charge me an arm and a leg for two snips that I didn't need. read more

I've left multiple voicemails with my phone number included, but never get a returned call. I would give 4 stars for Ms. Rita's actual work but cannot due to her unresponsiveness. If I could sadly give them zero stars, I would. Rita does a decent job, but I think they are a bit overpriced and unprofessional in a lot of ways. I was stood up not once but TWICE after booking an appointment with her. The second and last time, I left work from South Austin early to make sure I could make it to my appointment on time on a Friday only to show up a couple minutes early and found the shop to be closed. My experience with Ms. Rita was top-notch from the setting up of my appointment. I am new to the area. Used Yelp to find her ;-) I was looking for someone who could manage my confused hair that wont curl and wont fully be straight. I called on a Thursday morning and she was able to get me in Friday morning. She was so nice and professional. Her shop was very inviting and the ambiance was wonderful. She took the time to tell me about my hair and provide a solution that was best suited for me. She wasn't just concerned with giving me a hair style. She is extremely knowledgeable and took the necessary time to give my hair the attention it needed. I picked a style that I thought might work for me, she did it (I have to be honest, I wasn't sure I was going to like it, all of our textures are not the same so what you see may not come out like you think ;-) Ms. Rita worked it though, I texted her a couple days later telling her I am loving my hair more and more each day. Wish I could give them more stars! And this is coming from a very critical yelper! First of all, I came across the T&J by accident. I was in a horrible hair situation, which my regular salon said they couldn't fix for months. Devastated, I randomly went into Sally's Beauty to look at clip ons and met Ms. Rachel, who told me she did extensions at her salon. Ms. Rachel is a miracle worker!!!! I had no idea where to even begin and she recommended the sew on link technique for me and no one has even guessed that I have extensions in! She is also very sweet and has given me great advice to help with my hair. I have only been to Ms. Rachel, but Ms. Rita is always friendly when I see her. They do all kinds of different extensions, keratin treatments, haircuts, and natural hair techniques and are always learning more and testing different products themselves to recommend to customers. Their services are reasonably priced. They have a big space which is kept very clean and has a nice ambience. This also really impressed me. I asked for a simple haircut and minor color highlight. I looked so bad that I had to spend @250 and another salon to correct the color and actually *get* a real haircut. It was four hours that cost me $100 bucks and left me looking like an idiot. I suppose it has something to do with the stylists inexperience with white girl hair. :-/ Live and learn. read more

Thanks to Ms. Rita and Miss Teresa this is a phenomenal place. I have travelled to various places inside and outside Texas and seen many stylists. This place rocks it is awesome. At 55 years of age I've been seen by a host of stylists. I have experienced hair loss at one place, had relaxer leftover in another place. I have been to another stylist and she would run in and out of the shop participate in all types of gossip she actually ate as I waited. Thankfully this not one of those places. I recently had my hair weaved by a Hair Stylist at this salon and while the weave was good the material that was used to sew it in contained rubber or elastic which I am allergic to. When my head started to itch uncontroably I used an over the counter braid spray I had used in the pass. When I consulted a professional and there were peaces of rubber exposed from the thread in my hair in their option that had caused an allergic reaction. I immediately contacted my stylist who said she understood reactions to synthetic materials. She said if I removed it she would condiction it and redo it. I was thinking.since it had not been a month she would do it free or offer a price break. She preceded to tell me about fungus from over the counter products. I mention the thread not being the standard I was accustom to and she berated me for that. Professionals should let the customer know what is being used on their head in every aspect of the word. read more
