I went in willing to spend any amount of money to have a dress made that would ensure I was comfortable at my wedding. I brought a photo of the dress I wanted made, and the owner blew me off. She acted like I was not in her league of clients and not her demographic - and that was clearly because I'm 40 years-old. Apparently, if you're not someone she can market on her website you should NEVER go there. If you're not a size 2, not in your young 20's, and don't show up with your rich parents (ensuring she will get paid) you shouldn't waste your time. Her loss...I could have paid and would have. My wedding dress was altered here and everything was done in time and done to my expectations. The bottom portion of my dress is a very light delicate chiffon material. I had decided to get my dress bustled (although looking back I didn't need this and probably could have saved myself some $$). Anyways, I was worried about the bustling due to the fabric but when I saw it - it was barely noticeable! The top of my dress fit me perfect. The service I have received here has been great. All the ladies that have helped me have been so kind and the pricing is also very up front. They were quick and to the point during appointments, which I love. The modern wedding-industrial complex has taken the idea of a wedding from a simple process of recording a legal transaction to a pompous parade of craziness where each couple can have their own personal Oscar night while forcing their friends and family to adjust their lives and budget for a year to focus on this one day, while pretending the divorce rate isn't 50%. When my friend asked me to be a bridesmaid, she swore she would pick out the most awesome dress that I would want to wear everyday for the rest of my life. Brides, don't do this. It's dishonest, even if you literally have the best taste in the world, wedding hormones will force you to pick out the ugliest piece of garbage possible. I knew this, which is why I said "I don't care what you make me wear, just don't make it too expensive." Of course, that isn't what happened and six months later I was staring at a $250 price tag for the ugliest dress I had ever laid my eyes on. It seems that from the stressful nature of having to sell my firstborn child to a tiny unnamed imp-like man who kept showing up in my attic in order to pay for all the wedding expenses, I gained some weight since the initial dress fitting. The dress wouldn't fit, as if to mock me for having to wear it in the first place, and the bride told me to get it fixed or not be in the wedding party. I was ready to call her bluff when a yelp search led me here. In case it hasn't been clear yet: Hell is other people getting married. Green and Blue were literally the only part of this process that didn't make me want to cry, or punch the wall, or throw fragile objects against the floor. My experience with them was a small island of salvation in a sea of minor annoyances and major eye roll induced headaches. In the end, there wasn't much they could do to help the dress, and I am still debating whether or not I want to try to sell it at a secondhand store or burn it in a therapeutic trashcan fire after the wedding, but when I picked it up it fit and that was all I cared about. The price was reasonable, I'm sure some places would do it cheaper, but it was worth the assurance that it would be done right. I know a lot of brides will be reading this. I'm sure this is a great place for that super unique wedding dress that I definitely have seen a million times before fitted. Unlike yours truly, the women who work here are sweet and professional and have a very calming demeanor. Seriously though, if you're going to make everyone wear the same shit, you should be paying for it. Green and Blue doesn't deserve my bridesmaid rant, but it does deserve 5 stars. read more

I just picked up my floor-length silk chiffon bridesmaid dress from Daniela. Alterations included hemming (both the outer layer and the lining), taking in the sides, shortening the straps, and inserting boning in the bodice. Cost was $180. Worth every penny. It was a different dress when I picked it up. The dress I dropped off made me look like a sad grapefruit. The dress I got back made me look like Grecian Barbie. Start to finish was 3 weeks, and included 3 fitting sessions (first fitting when I dropped off the dress, second to check the fit when seams were basted, and final fitting when I picked it up). I usually do my own alterations, but decided to go to Daniela because I can't sew chiffon properly, and even if I could, who has the time? Not sure if people realize how much time it takes to tailor a gown properly, especially when you're dealing with delicate fabrics. Very happy I outsourced this to Daniela -- she did a beautiful job and was very patient and thoughtful. Tips: Bring the shoes and bra you plan to wear with the dress with you for all fittings, and especially for the first one. It's a big help. Also, call Daniela to schedule an appointment, don't be put-off by the hours posted. I was not able to come in during the published hours, and she was great about working with my schedule. read more

This was one of the most frustrating and stressful parts of my wedding planning process. Do NOT go here if you care at all about price, value, or customer service. I took my dress in for simple alterations (taking up the hem and straps), and they charged me $850. When I asked why it cost that much for such simple alterations, they were rude, scoffed at me for asking, and said everything was "in a range," and the lowest any job would be was $650. Aka it's completely arbitrary. I felt sick to my stomach knowing I was being ripped off like this, especially when weddings are a constant upcharge for every vendor, and I decided to take my gown elsewhere. I still had to pay $50 for the fitting, even though they removed all the pins. I had nothing to show for the experience except a waste of my time. Instead I took my dress to a tailor who did the whole thing beautifully for $200. Don't settle for this "boutique" -- it's a scam and a bad experience to boot. The only positive thing I'll say was that the seamstress was very nice, but I'm sure she wasn't seeing most of that profit. read more

This place has so many great reviews I was really excited to get my wedding dress altered here. I was sorely disappointed. The prices are outrageous, the service is poor, and the quality of work is pretty sloppy. I brought my dress home completely wrinkled, parts of the work weren't finished (even after I pointed out what wasn't fixed and they took a second crack at it), and there were still pins in the dress. I had the worst experience of my entire wedding planning process here. I was unsure about my dress so I wanted to first bring it to an alterations place to get a quote on how much it would cost before deciding whether keep or return it within BHLDN's 30-day period. As soon as I arrived, without any introductions, they immediately put me in a room with a seamstress and she started to pin me in the dress. It was a very extensive pinning process (seemingly for people who already decided to go with them) which went for over 15 minutes, and included the seamstress ripping the string holding two layers of the dress together. I kept asking how much this would cost, and the seamstress kept saying I'll know later. The seamstress then pricked me in the foot with a needle, causing my toe to bleed on the floor. I finally said enough is enough and that I wanted to talk to someone who could give me a quote first before proceeding further. The manager gave me a bandaid for my toe and sat me down, and then proceeded to quote me nearly $900 for just a hem, bustle, and shortening the straps (the manager wasn't even there to see the whole pinning process and what work needed to be done). Note that this is a $995 simple crepe dress hat has zero embellishments. When I mentioned that my friend had gone there with a much more complicated dress and only paid $550, she gave no explanation except that they are very good at what they do. They also did not offer to pay for any possible blood stains or damage to the dress. I was so angry that I left the store and cried. Not only was I insulted by the whole process and lack of customer service, but my dress was stained with blood in two places and the string holding the layers ripped so I couldn't return it. The selection is fairly small, slightly pricey and if you're not into what is popular this season, then you will probably be disappointed. They have a nice selection of jewelry as well. I was somewhat disappointed by the salesperson working the day that I came to visit. She was trying to convince an elderly woman that a terribly unflattering jacket looked good on her, and was flat out lying about how it looked from the back. What really floored me were the prices of the custom-made clothing items...not bad. $300 for a pair of pants made specifically for you? It happened just three months before my wedding day. But I was very lucky to purchase my dream dress directly from the designer. We only had 10 days to have the time to alter it, so once I ordered the dress, I started to look for an alteration place and ask around if they could get my dress altered in 10 days. When I called Green and Blue Studio they said they can do it in a rush. At this point, I still didn't know if the dress would fit me and they didn't know what kind of dress I got. I went to Green and Blue Studio and met Daniela on the next day I got the dress. She is very professional and a very sweet person. She told me they would get the alterations done in only one week, then we would have the time to fix little things if it needed and I didn't have to worry about it right before the wedding. The dress was my dream dress and I couldn't think of getting any other dress. They saved my wedding, I can't thank them enough! I was appalled recently when I took my simple dress in for alterations. My dress is too long, and my ceremony is taking place outdoors so I wanted a tailor with wedding apparel experience to help me with the hem. The woman who greeted me was very pleasant and gracious, and the space was neat and welcoming. She complemented me on the great fit of the dress! However, I was shocked to find out that for a one inch hem on my simple, a-line, sheath style, 2-layer wedding dress it would cost me $300! Yes, you read right. 300 smackers. She brought it down due to the simplicity of the assignment, but still. I wasn't sure where to go to add a bustle to my wedding dress, but Green and Blue Studio had fantastic reviews, so I made an appointment with them. I'm so glad I did! From the first very efficient appointment where I tried on my dress and she pinned it to the next one where I returned to try it on an understand how to pin the bustle up, it was a genuine pleasure in every interaction with the studio. The cost was about $100 for four different bustle points, and I waited for five minutes at the end so she could find matching fabric to sew on the bustle points to hide the clips. In the end, I am SO pleased with the way the bustle turned out, and the fabric hiding the clips matches perfectly. I've gone to Green and Blue for difficult tailoring of some lovely dresses and skirts - even an overhaul of a designer dress. Recently, I took my wedding dress to be tailored. I didn't trust anyone else (not even Kleinfeld - where I bought the dress from) to get it right. Green & Blue delivered as promised and went out of their way to make sure the dress was ready on time. My dress was particularly difficult - asymetrical trumpet style - difficult to bustle correctly - especially for any discerning bride's eye. I definitely recommend Green and Blue for any important tailoring. This review is for custom-made shells and alterations on vintage clothing. Daniela, the shop owner, is more than a designer or tailor. She's an artist who works with fabric to create beautiful clothes. And she's delightful to work with - friendly, warm, and unpretentious. I shopped everywhere for some simple shells to wear under suits or with dressy skirts. Finding nothing, I finally bought some fabrics I liked and took them to Daniela. From my verbal description of what I wanted, she created a muslin pattern from scratch that fit me perfectly. She spent a lot of time getting every detail exactly right, and then created two shells for me (using the silk materials I had bought). She even understood my desire to get just the right buttons! The results were wonderful. Daniela stayed in touch w/me during the entire process, and patiently fitted the final garments until we were both happy with the way they looked. Several weeks later I bought a vintage off-white duster that was too long for me. I took it to Daniela and she recommended a length that would suit me better, but still retain the original lines and details of the garment. Again, the results were terrific. Her pricing tends toward the high-end, but in my opinion, her workmanship and attention to detail are definitely worth it. The garments that she worked on for me will be part of my wardrobe for many years to come. read more

I worked with Daniela and the team on transforming my mother's wedding dress into my own dream dress. This involved taking a Laura Ashley cotton batiste gown circa 1982 and making it look fresh for a yacht club wedding. Luckily, my mom had surprisingly classic taste for the 80's and I loved everything from the waist down. That said, the dress was at least one size too small for me and one inch to short. Also, I hated the simple top and obviously hated the 80's style puffy sleeves. The team at Green and Blue sketched out some ideas, and we met many times over the next several months. The puffy sleeves (covered in a ribbon check pattern) were removed and the material was matched up perfectly to create a sweetheart bodice, complete with boning. The dress was lengthened with matching ribbon perfectly sewn to the bottom--it really looked like it was always there. They really went above and beyond. When I decided I wanted a belt from Etsy in matching ribbon, I was able to just stop in and grab a scrap for matching the shade, upon my request. They even sewed it on and included a faux bow with snaps for an incredibly modest price. Also, when I lost some weight quickly before the wedding, they were able to whisk me back in with my dress for a final fitting. The experience was a little anxiety-inducing for me at first (was I really not going to have a "say yes to the dress moment at a bridal salon?), but I quickly became excited and completely at ease in their hands. I felt so beautiful in the dress, and it was a huge hit at the wedding. It felt very special to be wearing my mom's dress among people that had celebrated with her 30 years ago in the same gown. The value was incredible. I know that I paid less in alterations than many of my friends with designer gown alteration needs that require skill, but not same level of artistry. I had my wedding dress tailored at Green and Blue due to good reviews and extreme convenience. Everyone I worked with was great, and they even rushed to take in the bust a little further after concerns that it was too loose on top. The dress had a number of details and they were dealt with care. The bustle they created is also gorgeous. It is, however, pricey. They do great work but if you have a tighter budget it may not be the best option (despite a serious derth of alternatives in the city). They are also not the quickest with regard to turnaround, so plan ahead. Overall, though, the results were very nice and I would absolutely trust them with my more delicate alternations. read more

The alterations themselves were very expensive eclipsing the cost of the dress itself, but I was willing to pay for what I expected to be quality work. On the day of the wedding, the seam for the dress began to come apart. I immediately called and asked if they could squeeze me in given the emergency - they declined and were not at all helpful or even empathetic to the issues stemming from their work. I could not be happier with the service and quality I received here. I had bought two separate pieces for my wedding dress - a lace top and a long tulle skirt, and there was a gap because the skirt would move around. I put off going to a seamstress, and then before I knew it, it was two weeks before my wedding. Aack! I went into Green & Blue and the two women were extremely nice. They didn't make me feel bad or stupid, and were very helpful and sweet. Daniela (I think?) added loops to the skirt, attached the two pieces, and really made my dress a real gown! All under a week and for a very fair and fantastic price. I was so pleased. Not only that, when I picked up my dress, she sent me home withe a coupon and two chocolates! Really great service. I had green and blue alter my wedding gown and I will say that I was satisfied with the end result. However, I experienced a few hiccups along the way that I would warn people about. First of all, every time I got there for an appointment (and I had 3), I had to wait at least 20 minutes. It was always packed. I guess they are very popular, but at $400+ for wedding gown alteration, I would have liked them to plan out the appointments a little more precisely. At my first appointment I told the tailor that I needed 3 things done. First, I wanted the dress hemmed. Second, I wanted them to sew on some buttons (which I mailed to them after my first appointment), down the back of the gown. Third, I wanted them to fix some puckering that was happening on one side of the neckline. The tailor seemed to understand all my requests. However, when I showed up for my second appointment, the puckering in the gown was still there. I pointed it out and the tailor said something about the elastic causing it and it couldn't be fixed. It looked horrible so I pointed out that the other side of the neckline was fine and I just wanted them to fix it so that both sides matched. She seemed to understand this and said okay. But when I went to pick up my dress at the third appointment, the puckering was still there! I was pretty upset at this point and one of the other women came in to help us and she suggested just taking out the elastic. They did that really quickly in the back and the puckering was gone. I was a little put off that they tried to have me take the dress home with the puckering still there when I was so clear that I wanted that fixed. Also, I had to deal with them saying that the buttons I mailed to them never arrived. I went through this monumental effort to get new buttons from the manufacturer in time (the wedding date was quickly approaching and the buttons in that particular fabric were back ordered) and I dropped the new set off in person. But when I went to pick up my dress at my last appointment I noticed that the original buttons I had mailed were sitting at the bottom of the dress bag! That was quite annoying... However, I will reiterate that I was satisfied with my gown when I took it home so at the end of the day I would trust them with alterations. read more

I had an appointment for alterations to a bridesmaid dress. The dress I ordered was at least three sizes too big and virtually unwearable. Twenty minutes later, the seamstress had turned it into a great little dress. I'm so excited to wear it now! What I liked most about Green and Blue was their efficiency--I arrived early for my appointment, and they were able to take me early. Everyone is friendly and professional. The payment process seemed pretty standard, but I do wish they had informed me of the prices of some of the standard alterations ahead of time. If I'd known the price of shortening the dress, for example, I may not have opted to do that. I came to Green and Blue with two week's time to make the dress one I could feel good in on my wedding day and they far exceeded my expectations. First of all, Daniela waived the "rush" charge they usually charge for alterations done within 40 days. She understood my pain from the last seamstress and took pity on me! I wasn't that happy with how my wedding dress turned out, for $500 worth of alterations. I'm putting the details here because it was kind of a specific situation. So: the bodice of my strapless wedding dress had limited boning, and I was told to get a corset to wear underneath to keep things in shape. However, because I am very short and short-waisted, I couldn't find a corset that fit properly without the boning doing some ridiculous bulging. (The ladies at Coup de Foudre down on E St. told me as much, and trying on several corsets did bear this out.) The upshot of this was that "nothing could be done" to get the dress to sit properly, and it had a big fold running horizontally across my middle that could not be tugged away. Kind of a bummer. I just held my bouquet there a lot. Other than that the dress was good, which I know took a lot of work from them - they had to cut off the entire skirt and move it up so the waist hit me in the right place, added a bustle, hemmed it, and did all sorts of stuff to the bust - but I wish they had done more or at least suggested more to try to fix the creasing problem (maybe adding boning to the dress itself? changing the fit of the bust? adding halter straps?) instead of just shrugging. Also, make sure you have at least 2 months to get the alterations done, or you will incur a rush fee that is, I believe, 30% of the cost of the alterations. read more

Daniela is a consummate pro. She took in my wedding dress and adjusted the straps for $160 and it only took her two weeks! The dress looks great and I couldn't be more pleased. I was nervous about having my dress altered by someone outside the bridal salon, but it was a great decision. I got a very fair deal and a dress that fits like a glove. Daniela made alterations to my wedding dress. I should explain that because I'm a grad student on a tight budget, I bought my dress off the rack at a national chain store and decided that it needed some finishing touches to make it unique, beautiful, and "me." So when I heard about Green and Blue I decided to try it out. The first time I met Daniela I knew she was going to do an amazing job. There was not a shred of judgement about the fact that my dress was off-the-rack instead of couture. Instead Daniela was warm, listened attentively to what I thought the dress needed, and was immediately excited to get creative and make it beautiful. Not only did she make alterations to my dress to take it from off-the-rack to stunning, she also worked on my wedding shoes to make them go well with the dress by redesigning the clip to match the lace she had added to my dress. After alterations to the neckline of my dress, including buttons and lace, and the work done on my shoes, I still spent less than $100, which I thought was very reasonable. And Daniela gave me a garment bag to keep my dress in as token of congrats for my wedding. I would highly recommend Green and Blue and in particular Daniela to anyone needing help with an outfit for special occasions. She was kind, a pleasure to work with, and did an excellent job. I took my wedding gown to Daniela at Green & Blue for alterations in July-August 2011. She did a beautiful job with the work and I could not be more pleased! She was so nice and easy to work with and she even brought in her lovely seamstress to help with some of the details. Daniella and the seamstress were both present at all 3 of my fittings. I would not have even known to request or look for some of the adjustments they made and the dress fit me like a glove. I had the dress shortened 10", taken in 4", and major alterations were done to the train including re-finishing the lace edging, which they insisted upon doing for the beauty of the dress. The price was great for the work done. I admit that I initially thought the quote was high and I took the dress back home with me to think about it. I knew that I did not trust the first 2 people I took the dress to (with one there was a major language barrier) and I felt very comfortable leaving my dress with Daniella. So I went back a few days later and said 'yes'! The amount of attention and concern they had for my dress was so sincere. The fact that she is in Dupont Circle and I did not have to drive out to Fairfax (or rent a car/take metro to do so!) is priceless!! I cannot say enough good things about this business. First, they are fantastic. When I bought my dress, the store told me to go with the bigger size and have the tailors take it in. I did that, but as I brought it to a different seamstress, they made it clear that my dress was extremely hard to take in as much as I needed. The team at Green and Blue was not phased and literally ripped my wedding dress apart and re-stitched the entire thing to fit my body. You would never be able to tell that the dress wasn't made just for me. They're also so sweet and helpful. I came in the week before my wedding to pick up my dress and showed them the belt I was going to wear. Rather than have me tie it around my waist and show the knot, the ladies stitched it right on the dress, making it look infinitely better. I paid a lot, but I think my dress needed more work than the average wedding dress. That said, it was worth every penny.
