Shrimp Pho with a small vegetable
    Dustin M. R.

In West Lafayette for the day, I asked my son what he wanted for lunch, and he said pho, so we went to Green Leaf Vietnamese Cuisine. On entering, an employee asked us how many, then told us to sit anywhere. Amusingly, he had the exact same interaction with everyone who came in after us, regardless of if their party was 1, 6, or anything in between. After a short wait, another nameless employee brought us menus, then took our orders. My son got the round eye steak pho, I selected the shrimp pho and a hot tea (which never came), and an order to crispy tofu to share. Before tax and tip, our bill came to $28.94 even after my tea was removed, which felt kinda pricy. While the restaurant was about a quarter full, our food was ready pretty quickly. My son and I both agreed the crispy tofu was very good. My shrimp pho was good, but not great, while my son said his round eye steak pho was pretty average. Frankly, the portions were pretty small given the price, so I was glad we had ordered the appetizer, otherwise we would still have been hungry! Service at the restaurant was ... sparse. We interacted with our waiter just four times: when he brought our menus, took our orders, brought the tofu, and finally when he brought our pho. At the end of our meal, we were not even sure how to check out, until we saw another table walk up to the counter with their credit card in hand. PROS: best (only) pho in town, the crispy tofu appetizer was very good CONS: pricy, small portions, lack of service Overall we found Green Leaf Vietnamese Cuisine to be Good Enough, and would return.

There are no other pho restaurants in the area, so there is zero competition with this place. I never have to worry about parking here even though the lot is small as it's in a location where many people can get to on foot. The restaurant always has lots of seating, so it's a good place for large groups. Depending on the day, you'll likely get a server who is doing bare minimum to get a tip. The pho portions are small so ordering a size up or extra noodles will probably be just right. This place is really a 2.5 star, with food that will leave you with msg overload and possibly still hungry and a lighter wallet. But since I am sometimes desperate to satisfy that pho fix, I end up here because other places are hours drive away.

A really nice place to grab a quick bite. While there are really no other options in the area for pho, this place holds its own with their broth. The pho tai is my favorite, the meat quantity could be more, but I usually get a regular size. The large may have more. It's always clean and the service is nice and usually really fast. I did take away one star because if you're dining with 4 or more they add a default tip (can't remember the percentage but I think it's pretty high). The first time this happened we didn't notice and left a second tip on top of the first. They should make it more clear that it's added automatically. This is usually understandable for large groups, maybe even 6+, but for 4 people, it's quite unexpected and unnecessary.

The food at Gre n Leaf is exceptional! Very tasty and well prepared and you can chose among many menu options. I love the service at the place and the chef is so friendly with the guests and always takes care to offer the best quality! I highly recommend this place.

This is my fave pho spot! Love the broth here. Plenty of parking, decent bussling location, and large seating area! I've read a few poor reviews, one mentioning they came from a city known for their pho, they believe the herbs are sparse and portions are small. Let me just ask yall this... do you think in 2024, a small business is really just going to be giving away all their ingredients? I mean, they are keeping their prices low, their service is quality, their ingredients and most importantly their broth is on POINT!! You are in West Lafayette, Indiana. Pho options are slim here, so yes, it may not be comparable to the pho capital of the world where you are coming from, but to locals, this place is smack!!! Please be kinder to small business owners as they navigate through these trying times, because they are likely barely making it in this economy. With love, from a combination pho fan!

Thai Tea is great! Very sugary and expensive but a fun treat.

How authentic could a Vietnamese restaurant be in Danville? I already knew that authentic Chinese food could really only be found in Champaign, so what are the odds that this Vietnamese place was legit? Turns out, I've found my new favorite spot in Danville and I definitely want to try it all. Since it was quiet on my first visit, my first impression of the restaurant came through the owner/chef. Apparently he has a team of two when it gets busier, but he will handle things on his own when there are less people. Let me tell you, the owner is quite the character, but I think he really gives life to the restaurant. He's very outgoing, a bit of a jokester, but a very personable and hardworking guy, someone we can all relate to and admire. He talks freely about his life and how he ended up and Danville and the origins of his restaurant, all fascinating stories. You definitely miss out on the total experience if you don't get a chance to chat with him. So back to the original question at hand. How authentic could this Vietnamese food be? Here's the answer - absolutely legit, and delicious too! My first visit I ordered their grilled beef Vermicelli Bowl and I took it to go. It was organized very nicely and the dish was great. There were so many different flavors going on, but everything was balanced. The beef had a richness to it that was countered by the acidic vegetables and fish sauce that was poured over the top. There were also a lot of great textures from the chewy noodles, the beef, the lettuce and even the spring rolls. It was really filling and was an experience for my palate. While I had my noodles, I was thinking about another dish I saw on the menu so I came back the very next day to order their fried swai fish on fried rice. This was another incredible dish, and one that was very different than the last one. Rather than there be a lot of different components, there were just a few things done very well. The fish was fried perfectly and the flavor was popping. The fried rice was also done very nicely. This dish was a culmination of the restaurant itself, a few things done to perfection. Their menu isn't super big, a couple of phos and rice dishes, but I feel confident that in this case, less is more. The chef's kiss on this restaurant are the prices and portions. This restaurant has the quality and serves up enough quantity where they could charge $20+ easily. They do that in my hometown, and it's not nearly as good. I would implore you to support this local business, it's got a great owner with even better food, the best in Danville in my opinion!

The portion arrived looking like something the Jedi Council would have sent as a diplomatic gift. The rib meat was falling off the bone in the way that only happens when someone in that kitchen actually paid attention, tender, rich, and worth every credit of the $30 price tag. They bring the usual sides: bean sprouts, sliced jalapenos, lime wedges, and fresh basil. They also brought out a small plate and a knife to handle the rib, which was a thoughtful touch that saved me from an otherwise undignified situation. Once the meat was cut and ready I did what any serious pho person does and built my dipping sauce on the small plate: chili oil, a small amount of sriracha, and hoisin. I am told that this is the traditional way to approach pho. You preserve the integrity of the broth and dip your noodles, meat, and vegetables as you go. Dumping everything into the bowl is a valid personal choice, but it is not the way of the Jedi. My son stuck with the reliable Pho Special plus extra noodles at $16 plus $2 for the extra noodles, which remains the best value play on the menu for a bowl that genuinely satisfies. Neither of us left disappointed, which at Pho Tasty is essentially a guarantee at this point. Five stars, no hesitation. The #29 is a special occasion bowl. The house special is an every visit bowl. Both are missions worth repeating. The Force is strong here.
