One of my favorite Barbeque spots when I am in the area. The staff is always very friendly and they have a great beer selection. They have a large outdoor seating area and are very welcoming of dogs. I love their plate options: a meat, two sides, and two hush puppies. I most recently got the quarter bbq chicken plate with pigtail fries and Mac and cheese. We checked out Saluda today and saw our chance to try out North Carolina BBQ. We are from Texas and have located to Columbia, SC, so we are still trying to figure out what distinguishes one BBQ from another. So, I had the 1/2 plate of Pulled Pork and my intrepid partner had the 1/2 plate of Brisket. My sides were tomato pie and BBQ slaw. He had a salad and collards. We both agreed that the spicy BBQ sauce at the table was better than the mild. I loved the tomato pie, but the BBQ slaw was kinda sweet. I guess I was expecting something tangier. He says his collards were juicy and he did like the garlic vinegar provided. I liked my pulled pork, but it wasn't very warm (???). He says the brisket had a bit more fat than he liked (but I have to think, what?, brisket is supposed to be nice a fatty!). I looked at it and it looked to me like they didn't cut it right - not across the grain or something - looked more like a slab. I think brisket should be juicy strings that you cut with a fork and - well - it just didn't look right. I should have tasted it and will def be back to see what I think. I'm looking forward to checking it out again. Just not giving it the 4-5 star YET. It is local flavor and the town is worth the visit. The atmosphere is great and the beer we shared was delish. Mediocre bbq, much better bbq located a few miles away in Flat Rock and Hendersonville. This establishment refuses to give patrons a straw to drink out of because of their environmental beliefs, but they will give you a styrofoam takeout box or plastic cup without batting an eye. Have been hearing about this place for years. Finally made the detour off of I26 after an annual trip to the local apple orchard. Glad I did! Really nothing to complain about. Everything was solid. Iced tea was perfect. The chopped pork was as good as any I have had. The sides were terrific. The bbq (red slaw) was great so was the tomato pie. I had never had this, but I am a total fan. My wife really liked the turkey salad salad. The smoked turkey was excellent. Home made potato chips! The macaroni and cheese was just ok. I have had better. Everything I saw coming out looked amazing. Staff was friendly. I could spend all afternoon there with the draft beers and big screen tv. Rustic little place with a nice view. While in town my husband wanted some barbecue and then after the recommendation of some folks at our B&B, we decided to try Green River Barbecue. Once I was told they had tomato pie and fried okra that was all I needed to know! We went for a late lunch and they were still busy as we got the last table! My husband had the barbecue plate with a side of fried okra and sweet potato casserole. He loved it all! I opted for the vegetable plate and had the tomato pie (of course), fried okra (of course), macaroni and cheese and a garden salad. The salad wasn't anything impressive, just iceberg lettuce with a couple of tomatoes and carrots, but the blue cheese dressing was amazing! The tomato pie and fried okra were to die for! I could eat that every day, although my butt and thighs wouldn't like it! I'm a huge macaroni and cheese fan, but I must admit this was just okay. Wasn't bad necessarily, but I would probably try something else in its place next time. We look forward to going here again just for some good country comfort food! read more

I have eaten here many many times. So i thought i would take my friends here today to see how awesome their food is. The place was packed of course for a Saturday. And every table was full or just left with stuff still on the table. We went back to the bar area because we wanted to watch the Georgia Florida game. It wasn't on, but food network was, my friend asked the bartender (I don't know her name, but a young blonde) if we could change the channel and she responded she would ask the bar first because some were watching it. Ok fine, we were ok with that. So we sit at a non-bussed table just to get out of the way and she came over and with an extremely nasty attitude said "you are not supposed to sit at dirty table before we clean it!" The only restaurant open in town (on a Saturday?!). Explains the crowd. Staff was NOT friendly. Felt I was imposing by just being there. Waitress just put menu down in front of us and walked away. We didn't receive silverware or napkins upon arriving. Our appetizer, sausage dip, was actually good but that was probably because the sage sausage is made at the local Thompson store. My husband ordered a catfish sandwich with fries, I ordered shrimp tacos which according to the menu comes with coleslaw, and a DRIZZLE of Asian chili sauce. Between appetizer and entree our waitress never checked on us. I had to flag down another waitress to refill our drinks. When out food was served my husbands fries were cold, the coleslaw was awful, so thick and not seasoned at all! When he bit into his catfish sandwich water poured out, which the manager later informed us that it was because the fish was frozen) My fish tacos was drenched in the chili sauce, the shrimp was soggy and the coleslaw was so thick and tasteless that I took one bite and was done. The manager came over and defended the food, she actually charged me 25% of the price for literally taking one bite out of 1 of the 2 tacos on the plate . To sum up this place tasteless food, poor service, overpriced food and just as bad atmosphere. Needless to say we won't be returning. Do yourself and a favor and head over to the Purple Onion , the wait is totally worth it! I ordered the pulled pork plate with curly fries and mac n cheese. The pulled pork had a good smoked taste. The mac n cheese wasn't good at all. It didn't even taste cheesy. The curly fries weren't bad for Frozen fries. It came with hush puppies that were one of the worst I ever had. My wife had a chicken sandwich that she didn't like,it came with greasy Frozen fries. From time to time my wife and I drop off the interstate at Saluda and go to this restaurant. We did so yesterday for lunch and my wife had the green tomato BLT and collard greens, which she greatly enjoyed. She noted that it is not easy to get collard green just right, as some leaves can be thick. These were excellent. The sandwich, which she had on sourdough bread, was also first rate. As for me, I had the pulled pork platter, sweet potato fries and a side salad. I especially enjoyed the pulled pork. Meaty, no fat or sinew, and only mildly smoky. Further, not as salty as many that you get at other restaurants. The fries were quite good, but the salad was very basic, which was not surprising. A friend of mine is interning and one of the local churches this summer so after church he said we had to try the BBQ here. The three of us went right after church and it was easy to get a table for a Sunday. The wait staff was efficient and polite. My Mom got the smoked turkey, vidalia slaw, baked potato casserole, and the green beans. I got the BBQ chicken with the sweet potato casserole, corn nuggets, and sweet potato fries. Ok, yes, the sides are good. But that isn't the focus when you come to a BBQ place. Our party had a variety of items (brisket, pulled pork, buffalo wings, etcetera). I knew things weren't going to be great when I looked over to see the brisket my wife was served. All the same over done, dry grey, color throughout the meat. Nothing resembling a smoke ring or moisture. Wings were ok, but overdone. Those at the table who got the pulled pork weren't impressed either. I've been eating at the Green River BBQ for about 18 years. I currently live in GA, but lived in Hendersonville for one year 1999-2000. I go back to the area 1-2 times a year. I'm well traveled and have eating BBQ for 69 years. This is the best, hands down, I've ever had. I use the mild sauce on the chopped BBQ plate with about three sides. (There is a huge selection of home cooked sides.) Although I typically watch my weight, when I get to eat here, I let myself fall off the wagon. The look of the restaurant has evolved over the years. And, I'm told that many famous people have eaten there. Really interesting to me is what someone told me: the BBQ is sooo good, that there are business men that will fly into the Hendersonville light plane airport in Flat Rock, with colleagues, and take prospective customers to this place to close their business deal, then fly off. Currently, there is a sports bar, inside tables, porch tables, and outside tables. When I was there last week, it looked like the bathroom had been renovated. It's always very clean. One of the major reasons I love to eat there, is a waitress named TAMMY. She has worked there for 11 yrs. This lady's big smile, energy, and positive attitude, lights up the place. She's still as excited about helping the customers now, as she was 11yrs ago. I used to be a customer service trainer for a Fortune 500 company. I hope her boss appreciates her, because I know the best when I see it. I hope to move to the mountains next year. I consider myself already a regular. read more
