My Brother in Christ and I were in NC for a memorial service and when I smell wood burning I think BBQ not fireplace. So after the service we found FRWR. It's a real nice lil ole bbq joint. Kennedy gave excellent service and the good was very good. They served a generous portion of burnt ends, tender and juicy, tasty sauce, good cornbread. The onion rings are very thin and crispy like I like them and the mac n cheese was nice and cheesy. Overall I enjoyed it a lot! They let me clean up my own soda, tho, when I dumped it on the floor and table. Which I was completely capable of doing but usually expect someone to come with a mop. By far the worse BBQ pork meal I ever have had. Very watery, no spices and lack of any taste of using a smoker. Service was worse. Granted we walked in 45 minutes before closing. Waitress seemed disinterested in us and spent our entire meal in the back. Had to flag down another waitress just to get the bill. Impressed, not really. Fried pickles were suppose to be spicy, they weren't. Pizza, good, but over priced and IMHO average. The cost to add items EXCESSIVE...thankfully the pickles came with onion strawsso I added those to the pizza. Service was great but too much "my love" going on. I had a great dinner at Flat Rock Wood Room. Pulled pork BBQ is my favorite, and their BBQ platter did not disappoint. The pulled pork was juicy with a generous portion size. For sides, I chose the baked beans and potato salad. The baked beans were the standout. They were perfectly peppery and saucy. The potato salad was good, though a little creamier than my usual preference since I typically go for mustard-style, but the seasoning was still nice. The platter also comes with sweet cornbread, which I really enjoyed. There are two BBQ sauces available on the tables - Bold & Sweet. Both seem to be a molasses base, but the Sweet is thicker and sweeter than the Bold. The Bold sauce is slightly thinner and on the spicy side (but not overwhelming). Both were good, but I prefer a sweeter BBQ sauce. For anyone who's sensory sensitive I'll add a few notes. The restaurant is clean and has a cozy old farmhouse feel. Chairs were comfortable enough, and the temperature was pleasant (I tend to run hot and was fine). The overhead lighting wasn't harsh or directly shining on the tables, and the overall ambiance was nice. We went just before 6pm on a Friday, and it wasn't too busy, but by the time we left around 6:30 it was starting to fill up and the noise level went up noticeably. I appreciated that there wasn't music layered on top of the crowd noise, but I imagine it could get pretty loud during peak hours. If you have noise sensitivities, earlier is probably the best time to go. Overall, a delicious meal with a comfortable atmosphere. I'll definitely be back! read more

Flat Rock Wood Room has been somewhere I dine before my Flat Rock Playhouse shows and usually have great experiences. This time things started out with the staff trying to seat me at the bar. I didn't get there before opening and wait in line to sit at the bar. I had a friendly waitress though and ordered quickly as I had already decided what I was going to eat there and what to get to go for dinner. I got the Tuscan Sun pizza but waited on placing the to go order. I was put at a table with a view of the entrance so I watched as a party in the other room wanted to switch tables and went outside to a table there. The staff sort of threw a fit about that but the guy making the pizza crusts got very angry about it. The party he was angry with had no clue he was angry about it but it was disturbing to the rest of us. The anger wasn't in proportion to what happened. Customers coming in witnessed this as well and one spoke to him about it and there was dialogue back and forth then those customers decided to leave. I decided there myself not to place the to go order or return again. I just wanted a nice meal out before the show and that response just changed the whole vibe of the place. I understand that they are a busy place but you can still be nice to customers. The Tuscan pizza was really good and did come out quickly. Service was friendly and ambience seem nice. However, I ordered a cheese pizza and was the worst I have had. Crust seemed like it was going to be good, was a bit too salty. The cheese had a weird bad taste not sure what they used but I will say Chuck e cheese pizza is better. I took two bites and pushed it away. They had some tasty bacon grit balls that I liked except for the BBQ sauce drizzle, for me that was too much. When the waitress came to see if 7 liked it I said no I just wanted my bill and to go. She said she would see if she could get it taken off. A few minutes later the manager came up and said "you wanted to talk to me" I said no I just wanted to pay my bill and go that I had told the waitress that was the worst pizza I have ever had that it just tasted bad. He stared and me and said he would check with the cooks and see if there was an issue. He wasn't the friendliest guy. Then he said she said you didn't like the bacon bites. I said no I said that they were good but didn't need the BBQ sauce. We came tonight with a large group and our waitress did a great job even though some of our party forgot what they order. The ribs were fall off the bone delicious. I got a pretzel and it was good but didn't expect the bacon bots on it. Collard greens were ok. The buttered corn was not what we expected at all. Had lots of peppers in it and was not buttery. I guess that's what happens when you work in a place full of tourists. The food was decent. Cornbread was good and my family enjoyed the pizza and barbecue. Our server was in a huge hurry to turn over the table. Everything came out super fast. I guess that's the goal for the entire staff. We were in and out in no time. What bothered us the most is there was a 20% tip added on to our group of 6. That's fine but we felt like our server should have brought that up when she dropped off our check. My attempt to take my wife and family to a local staple was a bust. After multiple requests for plates to share- it was apparently decided by our waitress we were to eat our appetizers with our fingers and to quit asking. 3 out of 5 sodas were wrong but was very appreciated when we settled and accepted them anyway. Then our pizza was wrong and quote 'we can either accept it or wait for the correct one to be made', and finally 3 requests for refills before she remembered. I will say the salads and pizza are OK, but anybody saying this place has great barbecue has no idea what they are talking about. I'm from central Texas and have been smoking, cooking, eating and dining IMHO at the best barbecue joints in the country for over 65 years. I have never been to a place that has chicken or anduallie sausage on the menu and for good reason . All their meats are dry and overcooked. The brisket is brown all the way through with no ring, no bark, no taste, and dry as a brick. Come on people!!! If you truly want to experience real barbecue visit Lewis's in Greenville. Our server, Iyana, was spot on! Give this girl a raise! We ordered the pretzel appetizer & it was great- served with spicy mustard and cheese. We had combos and the skillet pics speak for themselves! The only thing I didn't like was the andouille sausage. The case was broken, was smothered in bbq sauce and had the texture of hamburger. I have never had andouille like this. If they make it- it's wrong. If they buy it, they need to get their money back. It was not good. I love spicy & I took one small bite and it was not edible. The collards were "doctored" with bacon bits and onions. Maybe canned? Nothing special ... the cornbread tasted JIFFY. This is a popular place for both residents and visitors to the Hendersonville area, and it's pretty easy to see why. The menu is large and diverse, making it hard for anyone to object on the grounds of not finding anything they like. It's also a very large restaurant, especially during times where outdoor seating is viable. For us, even on a friday night with a full parking lot and lots of people about generally, we had no issues getting a table. So that is a huge plus. Our group got one of the big pretzels for an appetizer after seeing some other people sitting around with one, and for me, this was the most disappointing part of the meal. It's not a great value for one pretzel, and by the time you split it up, there not much to go around. Menu wise, this place is mostly known for smoked meats and pizza/stromboli, which is admittedly an odd combo. Looking through the menu is daunting, but since they highlight the barbeque first and foremost, I decided to try their version of a cuban sandwich using their pulled pork, with a side of onion rings/straws. I figure if the pork is good, even if it's not super strictly a cuban, it would probably taste good... and that it did. It was also a nice large sandwich. The pork was not dry at all, though it doesn't rank upon any must taste lists in my head. There was a nice balance with the cheese, ham, and mustard. Others at the table were pleased with their primarily BBQ based offerings as well. I'd return here but would be curious to try some of the pizza or stromboli offerings. On a scale of 1 to 12, where 12 is for comparison sake 12 Bones barbeque in South Asheville, I'd rate Flat Rock Wood Room a solid 9. Not bad, but not in the caliber of a top-notch smoke house barbeque joint like 12 Bones. To put it in context: I wouldn't make a special trip just to go there, BUT if you are on your way to catch a performance at the Flat Rock Playhouse, it's very close by and a perfectly good place to grab something to eat in the area. We had their signature Fork and Knife Sandwich, which is smoked pork served on cornbread instead of a bun, and topped with cheese, onion straws and BBQ glaze, and also their pulled chicken platter. The sandwich was the better of the two, but both were good. The pulled chicken had a nice level of smokiness and was fairly tender. Watch for bones though (I found 2!). At the table they have four of their sauces: sweet (not my thing), bold (good, thick, semi-sweet), house (a little more vinegar) and spicy (a little more spiciness from the vinegar level, but also much thinner). I liked the bold and house best. For sides we had fries (good coating and crispiness), corn with onions and peppers (just okay) and sweet potato waffle fries (with a little added sweetness from perhaps maple syrup and/or honey -- good). Service was okay. Atmosphere is pretty much neighborhood barbeque joint (about half the crowd looked like folks headed to the Playhouse and the other half locals). read more
