when we hired lupe and team, one thing we knew was that we didn't know what we were doing. we knew what we wanted, but didn't possess the language to explain it. lupe and arturo translated our gestures and ideas into a plan that is, honestly, amazing. our old backyard was dark and oppressive -- now it's open and welcoming. we added a second patio for grilling and seating, while retaining the older patio for dining and more seating. the entire space is more conducive for entertaining while the garden beds provide lovely color while also being relaxing (and the birds and bees are very happy). while we are looking forward to phase 2 of our vision -- you learn a lot while doing a project like this! -- we are enjoying drinking wine in our yard while imagining what happens next. read more

We needed our garden cleaned up and refreshed after a couple of years trying to do it ourselves. Along came Lupe and crew to the rescue. They had everything cleaned up and ready for replanting in two days. Armstrong and Caitlin supplied the plants, a tree and many bags of mulch/fertilizer and potting soil that were in our garage waiting for Luis and Chilango and crew to carry everything up 23 steps and to the back garden. Everything was planted and beautiful in a day. They also did an irrigation assessment and made sure all of the plantings (old and new) were properly irrigated. Green Splendor Landscaping was one of three companies referred to us by a major local gardening center for lawn maintenance. Lupe stood out and I was looking to get a woman's perspective of how my yard should be maintained. I arranged to interview Lupe first hoping I would not have to interview the other two. Unfortunately, as I was waiting for our session to begin, Lupe cancelled. I contacted Lupe several times to reschedule, finally contacting the gardening center to have Lupe contact me. I found Lupe to be very professional, personable, and presented herself well. However, when we started discussing the plan, Lupe's initial comment was, "her company doesn't do this type of maintenance." Lupe claims she spent a great deal of time explaining that to me over the phone. On Lupe's company website, http://www.greensplendorlandscaping.com, the homepage states, "clients are referred to us for landscape design and maintenance services." Under the tab "Services," there is a section entitled lawn maintenance. Lupe's website also says, "Our friendly staff understands that you may not have enough free time to care for every part of your landscape, so we're here to help. We can regularly mow your grass and prune any shrubs or trees." - exactly what I was looking for. Then why did Lupe accept the referral? Why did Lupe set the appointment with me? There was no problem communicating with the other vendors, both which offered the same services and one I eventually hired. In contrast, when Lupe left I found myself wondering what that was all about. I would have hoped to have given Lupe the stellar rating as her clients have, but I found this to be a complete waste of time for both Lupe and for me. read more

I had been wanting a native garden reflective of the mountains in which we live (on Tongva ground) for many years. Basically, to respect the original people and wildlife, to curtail water usage, and to provide pollinators with a space to thrive. It wasn't easy to find a project manager and landscape architect who a) listened versus trying to add line items to increase profit, b) respected my native ideology and ancestral relationship to nature, c) understand what actually grows in this part of So Cal. Lupe project managed the garden from beginning to end and selected the right landscape architect (Mari) for the project. She took time to explain options, reduced over-all costs, which shifted because of supply chain issues and the time it took me to get off the wait list, and through it all, there was consistent and effective communication. My baby plants are thriving, with pollinators, and wildlife everywhere, and everything is what grows on the mountains right above my home. Mission accomplished. Unfortunately after six months and spending $1,500 for design services she refused to quote my project (after going dark for months). I am now back where I started and out $1,500. I suspected things were going bad when after receiving my deposit I never saw Lupe again. Only excuses and reluctant follow up via e-mail. And please Lupe, don't blame COVID. Nice try but we were in the middle of the pandemic when you showed up to take my check..... In all fairness I did receive plans as agreed. I just wasn't expecting to have no landscaper to provide a quote and actually show up at my house to complete the project. Now I am back at square one, less $1,500 bucks! Lupe is really good at one thing - asking for money and throwing the contract back in your face. I suggest any prospective client look elsewhere. read more

Lupe was wonderful to work with. A few years ago, I had my front yard hardscaped and planted with native species -- but was then pretty much abandoned by the installer who would only work with me if I paid her $100 a week for someone to make a short visit every week to check out the yard. AND she used a type of mulch that isn't commercially available, so I couldn't find it when the time came to re-mulch. Add to that some aggressive gophers who literally destroyed the plants that did manage to grow and my front yard was in very sad shape. Enter Lupe and her excellent team who brought my yard back to life: they put in new native plants; they corrected the previous installer's drip system (which didn't reach all the plants) by adding a drip to each plant so that all the plants will actually get water; they put gopher cages around the roots of the plants to protect them; and they did a beautiful job mulching with a commercially available mulch. Lupe and her team just completed the re-landscaping on my home, after we decided earlier this year to take advantage of the rebate for drought tolerant landscaping. Her designer, Maggie, has a great eye for beautiful plants and vast knowledge of native California drought tolerant species. We removed all the grass from the front yard, and Maggie came up with a beautiful design involving some flagstone paths and a large variety of sages and flowering plants. She also designed small succulent gardens (I LOVE THESE!) to flank the steps leading to the backyard! We replaced the backyard grass with a more drought tolerant species, so that the kids would still have a yard to play in. Lupe's team is incredibly respectful, quick, and clean. They were always on time, with Lupe letting us know at the beginning of the day what items would be completed by end of day. She was always sure to let us know, as well, on days they wouldn't be working (while waiting for plants that were ordered or materials to arrive). Super professional, gorgeous work. Update: The front lawn is almost entirely dead. This is partly because the drip system isn't set up the best. But that's because they really were uninterested in helping advise about the watering. And I believe it's partly because they didn't prepare the dirt very well. In the back yard, where I paid more to have the dirt prepared more, the plants are about two thirds still alive. My neighbor down the street had their lawn done by a different company, with similar plants for a similar price, and their lawn is huge and thriving. So sad; I really wish they had communicated with me better (see original review). I live with this disappointment every day. I would have been okay with spending more if I knew it was important. read more

My experiences of bad customer service, sloppy work, lies, belligerence, non responsiveness, not showing up when promised or not showing up at all mirrors to others that have accurately shared their miserable experience with this company. Full disclosure: I hired Armstrong nursery who in turn hired Green Splendor. So Lupe never had to really answer to me or make me happy. She just had to make sure her cash cow (i.e. Armstrong nurseries funnel of guaranteed flow of projects) was intact. OK where do I start? First off my name is Ross, and if you have any questions about this post or doubts of its veracity, please call me at 626 641 5714. I blame myself. I should have read some of the other negative comments on this thread, then I probably would have gone elsewhere with the project, that is what those reviews are there for. Duhhh. I want to make it clear, I had no problems with Lupe's draft and plant placement person Maggie. She was pleasant and did a fine job. First, the communication with Lupe was difficult at best. After we received the initial drawings from Maggie, Lupe disappeared for weeks, no phone calls, nothing. This should have been a red flag that I promptly ignored, my bad. Next, Lupe argued on almost every aspect of the project. Nothing was easy. When I had questions, she would answer condescendingly, impatiently and verging on being belligerent. Lupe acted as if I had no idea what I was doing and that my opinions had no value. This was not my first rodeo as I know quite a bit about landscaping, but there is much I don't know.....that is why you hire a "professional." Additionally, I was reminded by Lupe at every turn that the project was the "smallest" she was working on. She would take phone calls in the middle of our conversations, just to say "can I call you back?" I believe she did this to make herself appear to be busier and to drive home that the project was "small" and I guess the least important. The interesting thing about Lupe is that she presents herself so well when you first meet her, I was sold by her sweetness and overall good natured way. Finally after many issues and heartache (the list is too long to go into all details), the project was over, thank God, and I asked her about her guarantee - what kind of follow up if there were any issues with the plants or drip system. She smiled brightly and said "there is no guarantee, because I don't know what the gardeners will do to it." Hmmmm. She could have said, "no problem, call me anytime" and then just disappeared. Well, I guess we can chalk one up to her honesty. I think that it is important to mention, I never expected perfection, which is never possible. So I went in with medium to low expectations, hoping for the best outcome. Both Lupe and I made mistakes, that is clear, but I still feel that I was treated badly and short changed. This is the reason I wrote this review, not to be mean spirited, but to caution and hopefully help and inform others from having my same sad experience. Roots from a neighbor's tree were uplifting my brick patio causing it to be uneven. I had ignored the problem for years but finally needed to get it taken care of as the patio was turning into a mess. Lupe came by and assessed the situation providing several options from complete replacement of the patio and removal of the tree to grinding the roots and resetting my existing bricks. She made sure to check the tree type to ensure that grinding the roots down didn't impact the tree. She was absolutely clear and timely in communication, and her crew got the job done exactly as she said they would. She took the time to listen to what we were looking for, and encouraged us to email her photos. She took all of our needs into account when designing our landscape. Both Maggie and Lupe were very knowledgeable about the plants native to our region. Throughout the entire process, Lupe was up-front about the timing of the project. We appreciated the updates, and realized that, as with any major home project, it is a process that is at the mercy of many moving parts. When an issue present itself, Lupe proved to be a good problem solver. For example, if the nursery did not have a plant Maggie had included in the design, Lupe offered an alternative that was comparable. From design to install, we enjoyed working with Green Splendor.
