$9 portabello mushroom sandwich with onion rings, pretty worth it

alright, i have to write a review to balance this one out because our experience was superb or maybe they saw the previous review and cleaned up their act. i've been to many a ski resorts in the CA/NV sierras, and i have never had a lunch that wasn't in a overcrowded place, with $8 burgers that only come as burgers (cheese, sides, drinks extra). i couldn't believe the deal here. my wife and i ate for $20 total and was completely filled. granted we had an early lunch, late in the ski season. the service was great and prompt, and the food was surprisingly delicious. upon walking in with my snowboard boots & attire, we thought we were underdressed. this is the only ski resort place i've been to where they had silverware, a wine list, elevator jazz music (which is unusual), and quite an amazing view of the slopes & the river valley beyond. while i don't know if i'd drive up here just to go to the restaurant, this place definitely exceeding our expectations for a ski resort eatery.

My husband and I came here for our anniversary. Staff was very friendly. Not so many good items but they did have a little of everything. We enjoyed the amazing view as well! Go there for the view!!!

The sunset was so beautiful out there! The food is yummy and not so expensive as I imagined.

When my boyfriend heard that you could watch the sunset while eating dinner he was set on coming here and I'm glad we did. The prices were a little on the expensive side but we were able to find things we liked for reasonable prices. I had called ahead to make reservations but there were not too many people there so we probably didn't need them. They had a pretty good beer list that included and pineapple apple cider. I had never even heard of it before but I'm a sucker for anything pineapple. It was great. The view was beautiful. Definitely a great date place.

Beautiful view sitting on the patio. We just got salads but they were delicious and the perfect meal on a hot day!

Waitstaff, mostly college age, all in formal attire. Classy. Y'know? Greeted warmly & professionally by our server, Ashton, who informed us about the foie gras special & took our drink orders. My shaken Hendricks martini with a twist was delivered shortly thereafter & scratched the itch! Ashton then took our order of sweet chili shrimp with lime, the foie gras special with roasted apple, Caesar salad, bone in ribeye, New York strip, brussel sprouts and creamed spinach. The ribeye was cooked perfectly & tender. The NY strip was medium (mid rare was the target temp) and was swiftly refired and served. Shockingly fast too! Delicious. The sides were excellent as well. Somehow he had room for dessert. He ordered the bananas foster (made table side & always a fun show) & the espresso creme brûlée. Ashton kindly served a super smooth chocolate mouse cake square with graham crust topped with whipped cream and a candle. Nice. Just a lovely night all around. If you're craving steak & professional service in an old school setting...I suggest a reservation at Rare!

Everything about the place is unique and welcoming, from the regulars, to the dog Lucy, and especially Pat the owner and bartender. All made us feel welcome, even if we were first-timer tourists. The atmosphere is exceedingly unique and cool, with many personal touches all around the place. Lots of Blatz beer memorabilia, brand new shuffleboard table, a giant elk, moose antlers, vintage skis, an Elvis clock, cobalt glass bottles, a handmade bar, and lots more eclectic decor. The beer selection was top notch, and even better taps than we found in New Glarus, where everything seems to be New Glarus beer all the time (nothing wrong with that). Really good focus on local and regional brewers, there were taps from Titletown, Common Thread, Hop Garden (Belleville), Lena, Vintage, Central Waters, Summit, and Hinterland. New Glarus Berliner Weisse in the cooler, along with old standbys and unique craft beers. Another plus is that they update the beer list on beermenus. If beer isn't your thing, they also had an impressive selection of over 40 whiskeys. We didn't think they served food here, but lucked out since there was a Saturday special of homemade pork/chicken gumbo, which was served with homemade cornbread and bourbon butter. It was really tasty. The owner used to be a chef and ran a restaurant here prior to opening the Ale House. Our bill for two beers, gumbo and a big pretzel was $16, that's cheap for such high quality. They are only open 3 days a week, and it's just one guy running the show. If you are traveling a distance or bringing a group it would be wise to call ahead. The one-star reviews here reflect more on shortsighted personal entitlement than the establishment, from my experience.
