Am I a vegetarian, heck no. I wont eat what I cant punch in the mouth. I want my beef to be still slightly bleeding when I eat it. I want to savor any last bit of life in the animal that graciously gave its life for me. That said, some of the high reviews here, I think are biased simply because vegetarian food places are hard to find when compared to the rest of the food establishments out there... Of course people are going to be excited about the latest tofu soy lentil dish made from organic locally grown produce hand picked by virgins... Me I was dragged there, but I had an open mind! Decor... A yoga studio and hookah joint made a baby, and this is what it looks like. The place is draped with buddahs, indian themed carpet looking things hanging from the walls, and candles. A bit over the top IMO. If you dine outside, they have heat lamps that are very close to you and effective. Service was fantastic. Very attentive, polite, and accommodating. The food... Had some of their split pea soup. Not bad, could use a little salt, and a dash of pepper. They have sea salt in a grinder, +1 for them on that. Or is it because iodized salt is bad for you, and not as pure? Then the Tofu bowl with brown rice, and the infamous tofu sauce... I had the Jr size as I had just a few hours earlier scarfed down at 1/2lb burger and garlic mussels at Mc'Cormick and Schmicks. I'm impressed with the consistency of the tofu. If blindfolded, I could have imagined it was chicken! Poorly cooked chicken, but not tofu for sure. The brown rice was soggy, but I can live with that. The sauce, the tofu sauce is what brought it all together. At this point, I've had tofu pretending to be chicken, and brown rice that has been sitting in a rice cooker for a few hours. Those ingredients are nothing but a vehicle for the sauce. It vaguely reminded me of creme of mushroom soup? Good stuff. I tried a couple of the desserts, which btw are all "vegan." Yuck. No where near the same is items using real eggs and milk. But if you need to have your sweets, I guess it'll do. As a practicing carnivore, this place wasnt all bad. It wouldnt exactly be my weekly ritual, but the service was great, the food decent, and I left full. That said, is this a 4 star or 5 star place, no! A lot of the Love comes from the peaceful, beautiful, consciously laid-out setting. Some of The Dragon Shots can taste downright dragon-ey, but if you're the sort of person who is willing to put aside taste for medicinal value~ they're for you. You will love the unique dining area. There's a nice pond in the middle of the restaurant and it is very tranquil. Heat lamps will help keep you warm when you're dining in the patio area. The presentation is great! I love the walnut meatloaf. I loved meat loaf when I ate meat, so this is a great replacement. The tamale is yummy. Let's get something straight: I'm a carnivore. If I had a choice between a big hunky steak and some vegetables, every one knows which one I'll go for. With that said, I loved Green Temple's food. I got the Hummus for the table and the Peasant's Gold entree (a la carte), which was the perfect portion for lunch. Though the dish wasn't what I expected it would be (still not sure if the description mentioned that it was a salad?? I thought it was a hearty potato dish) it was delicious. The potatoes were the fluffiest I've ever had, and every thing was super flavorful. I thought that all the dishes I tried (Broccoli Casserole & Blue Plate) gave the veggies the spotlight they deserve, preparing them in ways that highlighted their flavors, rather than trying to fool the eater into thinking it's meat. There seems to be some issues with blandness mentioned in some of the reviews, but do not fear, there's a bottle of Tapatio sauce stationed close by. All in all, it's a cute place to eat guilt-free, so you don't feel bad getting cupcakes for dessert! read more

This place is great! Any time I drove to that area from North East Los Angeles, we always go to The Spot in Hermosa Beach, one of my very, very favorite restaurants. When we were talking to Tanya, the owner of The Spot one day, I told her I'd heard of the Green Temple and that I just couldn't bring myself to go anywhere but The Spot she said, "Oh, no, you should try it." (I love her!) Well, we tried it and I'm glad. It feels like a temple. Very Zen-like. You can tell they fung-shui'd it for maximum effect and comfort. We started with the Cornadilla, a soy quesadilla with corn in it served with salsa and quacamole. Mmmmmm! We also tried the pita and hummus, which was good, but different from the typical hummus we normally encounter at other places. I can't say I was blown away by it, but I can say that we ate the hell out of both appetizers. I mean, we cleaned those plates. Those appetizers didn't have a chance. My partner had the Almond Steamers, rice with vegetables, soy cheese and the tofu sauce (same as savory sauce at The Spot) and I had a dish called "Babamut". Mmmmm .... Babamut! Spelt pasta with corn and broccoli and soy cheese covered with this rich, wonderful vegan sauce. You guessed it. They never had a chance, either. Both entrees were served with freshly baked bread and a cup of vegan soup that was tasty. As you can see, we ordered quite a bit of food here, because we really want to get a good sense of this place. We ate too much, really. :-( But eating too much at a place like this isn't like eating too much at most places. The food is healthy and pretty light and lovingly prepared. How do we know? Because we got to interact with the owners, who were our servers. They were extremely friendly and chatty about their restaurant. They are very proud of their restaurant and they should be. Eating there is a nice experience, especially eating outside, hidden from the street. They sent us on our way with two free warm healthy cookies! This place is highly recommended. Great food, and nice to enjoy creative ways to eat vegetarian. I love the walnut loaf; although a meat eater, I actually like it better than meat-based meatloaf. i'm a huge meat-lover but didn't mind this place at all (i used to think any meal without meat was a waste of money). actually, i enjoyed the ambiance, food, and friendly service. i would never convert to a vegetarian, but hey i will definitely be back at green temple. *tried their "the 4 bowl" and loved it. i agree with number of yelpers on their tofu sauce. it was yummO. and for the dessert i had their bread pudding - their only non-vegan dessert. it was soooo good.* read more

The blue plate special was AWESOME!! It's veggie comfort food. The veggie burger patty is smothered in yummy mushroom gravy and served with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Entrees come with choice of soup or salad, we tried one of each and both were good. The lentil soup didn't even stand a chance when it was placed in front of me. My husband had the broccoli pine nut casserole with tofu sauce - and like everyone on Yelp says, it's pretty damn tasty. This is the first vegetarian restaurant I have visited and I did enjoy my order. The menu was very interesting to so I had a tough time choosing what I wanted to try for lunch, but looking at the photos online, the "garden wrapped" looked like a winner in the jr portion. I really enjoyed it being enchilada style and I liked the fresh vegetables inside which also had a nice texture. I would definitely go back and try the other dishes offered on the menu. Never had a bad meal here and always appreciate the atmosphere. It does get crowded for lunch and, relative to other places, seating is limited due to is popularity. I had the avocado melt. Everything tasted fresh and the portion size was perfect. Service is timely and attentive. The atmosphere in the courtyard is really what sells this place. If I could, I'd round up my rating to 3.5 stars, but alas Yelp doesn't carry half sizes (which really sucks when you're a perfect size 6 and a half)! Damn you, non-half-size-making-shoemakers. Damn you!!! FOCUS! Ahh yes, the Green Temple. Frankly, I was a little worried that it'd actually be something like a legitimate temple -- like one of the crazy Scientology cult-sites that masquerade around pretending to be "Celebrity Centres." Thankfully, it was actually a restaurant. But, I'm sorry to say, it didn't live up to the glowing Yelpage. Honestly... water served at room temperature? I mean, really?? I'm all for raw/organic/sustainable/eco-friendly/vegan whatever, but I have to draw the line when it comes to my water being served at room temperature. That just takes it. TOO. FAR. ...And really, how can you screw up an avocado sandwich? Ohh wait, I know! By not divulging that it's actually smashed up guacamole-esque "avocado," as opposed to pretty little slices. Extra screw-up points if you serve it on a thick slab of dry bread that falls apart when you lift it up. Oh, and a big shaking of the fist for my side order of vegetables... which ended up being 90% cabbage and cauliflower (aka two of my least favorite vegetables EVER). The BF ordered the veggie burger, which I thought was just mediocre. It was acceptable, but as he put it, "it's no M Cafe Big-Macro burger." Not a Big-Macro, indeed... Hmm... Upon reading my words of wrath, I'm rethinking my proposed score of 3.5 Maybe I'll just leave it at three. The Restaurant is located underneath a Yoga Studio and next to what seems to be a new age gift shop... indoor seating is limited but the outdoor patio is a much better place to enjoy your meal. The outdoor dining area is peaceful and serene. It has a large stone fountain with Lilly pads, Koi fish, and a skinny serious face Buddha in the center. (Not to be confused with the deliriously happy fat Buddha)... Just making sure we are all on the same page. The décor is very eastern inspired, zen-esque, with a Southeast Asian theme. Think Indian Bollywood movie meets The Secret Garden. They have a strict no cell phone policy while inside the Restaurant... and they do enforce it. Nobody really wants to hear your phone conversation anyways. People complain about the policy, but is it so hard to ignore the call while you are eating or to show a little tiny bit of consideration by simply taking the call outside? GT offers an amazing selection of tasty beverages along the lines of homemade Jamaica served with fresh mint and lime to Dr. Tima's Honey Ginger Ale. Drink up and stay thirsty my friends. The Jamaica is my favorite drink and there are free refills. Delicious variations using short grain brown rice, tempeh, lentils, tofu, and a wide assortment of surprise, surprise... vegetables usually served with a tofu cream sauce. They have great homemade soups that should not be overlooked and I do recommend the Broccoli Pine Nut Casserole, the Veggie Tacos, and green corn tamales. (The tamales are a special and they don't have this dish all the time) Standard fair trade coffee and tea that pairs well with the very tasty vegan pies and cakes that could perhaps rival any other.... Their desserts are amazing and I usually special order whole pies for the holidays. If anything, come try the desserts with a cup of coffee or tea. It's worth a visit. I have recently turned vegetarian so I wanted to try this place out. The parking lot is tiny and usually full but you can park on the street and pay the meter. This place has indoor and outdoor seating which is nice. I had their 4-bowl with baked potatoes, guacamole, crumbled veggie burger, and mixed greens. This was a good portion since I don't eat a lot and it was absolutely delicious! Their tofu sauce is heavenly and I would love to know their secret recipe! Even for non-vegetarians, this dish is savory and filling. I liked the Jamaica drink a lot~very refreshing and not too sweet. Our server was very friendly and super sweet! I was too full to get dessert! I will definitely return to bring my friends and try more items on their menu. This is by far my favorite vegetarian restaurant so far! read more

I wrote earlier in my review of The Spot that one should opt for Green Temple instead. I'm gonna go out and say that Leaf and Turquoise should give up just like Terra Bella. Green Temple is the best for vege/vegan in the Redondo/Hermosa area. Terra Bella was cool, but I didn't really want to eat there and its replacement Leaf seems like the boy who never showered in elementary school. My favorite dish at Green Temple is the anything with the tofu cream sauce...also really dig the veggy quessadilla. Also the place is serene and calming. I have been here multiple times and the food is always excellent. I love the vegetables and tofu sauce, and usually get the tofu steamers. The salads are so fresh you feel like your grazing! The green and earth lava juices are also really good. The ambiance is perfect and I have nothing bad to say, other then the prices are a bit high, but, given how good the food is, and the organic/local ingredients, I will still come back, over and over again. read more

This place is good, service is great, and the food isn't bad either, even for a meatatarian. The walnut meatloaf is a perfect dish to get if you're not into just vegetables. The mushroom gravy is awesome, great earthy flavors. I had the spicy corn chowder with my meatloaf and it hit the spot on a breezy redondo beach day. Everyone raves about the tofu sauce...i'm not a huge fan, just put the mushroom gravy on everything I think that's a better option. To be honest with you, this place is the first vegetarian restaurant I've been to. A certain person that was in my past life introduced me to the wonderful awesome and delicious vegetarian dishes that I never thought I'd ever try. Still lovin' it! Great to see how they've grown their client base and also expanded their space. Love the patio in the back with the fountain and flowers. It's so peaceful and relaxing eating there. Inside is really nice too, especially when it's too cold or hot outside. Food is consistently good, service is always outstanding. I used to see the owner here all the time in the early days (and she was always very friendly and nice), but I guess they're doing well enough and she's busy enough that she doesn't work long daily hours anymore. Yay! Me likes! First, this place feels like its not trying too hard.. at all, which you get sometimes with vegetarian places. The food is good! :) My boyfriend had a potato dish, he loved it. I had their special, the eggplant lasagna. mmmm. I left with a smile and without feeling too heavy. Also, their habiscus tea... same thing as Jamaica. I would give 5 stars for fresh ingredients and original flavors. The 3 stars is for the overall flavor - I ordered the eggplant lasagna (special of the night ) with potato soup. The soup was very light in flavor (not well seasoned). The eggplant was cooked well but the sweet marinara was a little too sweet.. Tasty, wholesome, earthy, "Californian" vegetarian cuisine with a home-cooked feel. When I'm in the mood for a warm bowl of greens, tofu, beans, and grains, I head straight over. They've got a super-full menu, but many dishes have cheese, so I tend to just stick with the (delicious) basics. I really love the "Zen" decor; it reminds me of all the Japanese gardens my mom dragged me to as a kid (I had UC Berkeley hippie parents). The staff has always been courteous, parking in downtown Redondo is simple. The prices here do give me pause, but you must consider that everything is organic and it's a small local place. Outdoor seating is so hippie and just charming. Seats have this funkie cushions, theres a fountain in the small garden and the plateware is unique too! Had the avocado sandwich= picey and ok. I mean i eat avocado sandwiches all the time (well when they are on sale) i love avocados! what i do is i put one whole avodaco sliced in my bread , sprinkle a little salt and its ready! simple and tasty! But this sandwich had a guacamole or avocado spread (really thin layer) tomatoes, and sprouts?? i think they were sprouts, dunno what they are called hehehehe they reminded me of a cow grazing! i was the cow bytheway and anyhow i felt that my sanwich didnt do it justice to its name "avocado sandwich" i tasted more more the other ingredients not the avocado, it should be called sprout sandwich. Drank a jasmin/green tea bag 3dll :/ hmmmmm good to know i wasnt paying for the meal... Brontosaurus seemed super happy grazing at his plate of greens and greens.
