I have risen from my deep Yelp slumber because Green Tomato Grill is just that good. Since moving to Orange County from West LA, I have had a sore lacking of healthy-ish New American cuisine. Not only does Green Tomato Grill fit the bill, they knock it out of the park. Came here on a sleepy weeknight at 8pm and ordered the Mediterranean chicken bowl, the Mexican beef bowl, and fried green tomatoes (hey, it's in their name!). Oh sweet raptor Jesus, those tomatoes+dipping sauce were good. They were perfectly fried and the sauce had just the right amount of herbiness and kick to it. I could probably eat nothing but the fried tomatoes for an entire meal. The bowls were also decently executed. Full of flavor without being overpowering, and with a good amount of meat. The beef bowl had cilantro lime rice which was nice and zesty. Please come and support this restaurant so they don't go away. Kthx. read more

It's probably a good thing that we don't live near here, because Green Tomato Grill would wind up with a lot of my money. First off, this restaurant is one of those places that tries very hard to please everyone. Sometimes, places that try to please everyone wind up pleasing no one. That is not the case at Green Tomato Grill; I think anyone should be able to find a variety of dishes to love here. There are even little check boxes on the order cards for you to note vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, or other dietary concerns. On the table by the door are copies of a preset menu, as well as custom order cards. The first time I came here, these cards were one time use, but by the second time, they had laminated the cards and provided wax pencils, making them reusable. I was happy that they were cutting down on wasted paper (and probably saving money too). If you don't want to order off the menu, you can make your own wrap, flatbread melt, rice bowl, or salad. Each of these meals includes a protein (meat or tofu), sauce, and your choice of veggies or other toppings. The people here will let you sample sauces before you order, so no need to worry about whether you'll like your choice. There are a lot of veggies to choose from, including interesting things like jicama or edamame, not just your usual peppers or onions (although you can get those too!). So far I have had the BBQ crispy tofu bowl (from the menu), and I've also had a custom rice bowl with tofu, thai peanut sauce, edamame, spinach, onions, and snow peas. Both were really good, but I preferred the thai peanut sauce over the chipotle barbecue. I like the fried tofu that they use, but I've rarely found fried tofu I didn't like. I don't know why it's called "lemongrass" tofu, though, because I really don't taste any lemongrass in it. It's still good, though. My only complaint is that the rice bowls could use a little more sauce. We also get the fried green tomatoes whenever we're here. Despite growing up in Virginia, I'd never had fried green tomatoes before, due to a childhood aversion to tomatoes in pretty much any form but ketchup or pizza sauce. The fried green tomatoes here make me regret that. I think we'll be coming back here often, even though it's a bit of a drive. You can easily build a different meal each time you come here, and it's almost certain to be good. read more

I really like this place!! I love their concept, their service, their options, and most importantly, their food. Plus, they are in the neighborhood, so extra plus! This place is all about making everything from scratch and fresh. They even have fresh lemonade. 3 flavors, in fact. The mint one was pretty darn tasty. They have a lot of choices: bowls, soups, wraps, and salads. My mother-in-law and I both got the breakfast bowls. She got the #1 with steak and I got the #2 with turkey sausage. Both bowls came with brown rice, eggs any way you want it, sauce, and veggies. I got mine with egg whites. The bowls were pretty tasty. I thought the sauce in mine was a tad too sweet. Yes, there was quite a bit of rice. But there was actually quite a bit of everything. The ratios were good! And they had a bottle of Sriracha and Tapatio on each table. A place after my own heart. I love hot sauce! Plus the prices were pretty reasonable. About $15 and some change for two bowls and a lemonade. I will definitely be back! read more

Came today for lunch around 2:00, no wait but several tables of people eating here. They have a great menu: wraps, salads, bowls, flatbreads, etc and a dessert case where nearly everything is vegan and gluten-free! I went with the Greek Steak Wrap (on gluten-free) with a side of chipotle ranch and also had to snag a gluten-free "Brookie" (brownie/cookie?). My total was $15.00 which is a bit pricey but whatever. The girl who helped me was awesome and my food was ready in about 15 minutes. Hmmm the wrap itself was kind of a miss for me. The steak was cooked nicely but way under seasoned and the entire things had a bad combo of luke warm and cold ingredients. Very confusing. My suggestion would be to eliminate the garbanzo beans and replace with hummus, eliminate the bell peppers and replace with roasted red peppers, and you could probably do away with so much lettuce. The tzatziki was off and the chipotle ranch was way off (all I tasted was dill??!). The "Brookie" was the redeeming factor of the meal. Delish. Ok, I'm hoping there is a 12 step program to help me because my name's Bob and I'm a Green Tomato Grill-a-holic. I'm not going to dissect everything I've tried here. All that needs to be said is everything is fresh, everything is from scratch (except the flatbread which comes from a credible bakery in Irvine) and EVERYTHING is absolutely delicious. The "regular" size orders are very filling or the "large" size will guarantee you have lunch tomorrow or a late night feast. I saw a photo someone had posted some time ago and it really caught my attention to come here some time. We came on a weekday during lunch rush - oops, we should have thought ahead and realized the time. The line was almost forming outside; I can tell this was quite a popular little place! The menu appeared quite simple; there were a few items that were already designed or you could custom order one yourself. Since I was new here, I decided to go for the easy already designed rice bowls. I actually wasn't feeling seafood today so I asked for the Verde Chili Steak Bowl in regular which came with their oh so good lime rice. For someone who does not eat rice, I actually found this very appetizing; it truly completed the dish! My bowl came with good slices of avocado, black beans, corn, red bell peppers, sautéed onions, good amount of steak on a bed of the lime rice. My friend custom made his; I forgot what exactly was on it but I believe it was chicken with carrots, cucumbers, red cabbage, and something else I think with the Thai peanut sauce on a bed of lime rice. His was yummy but I wasn't sure how I felt about the Thai peanut sauce..it was too modernized for me and very salty to my palate. I wanted to try and get a little bit of everything that Green Tomato had to offer so I tried the cucumber ginger mint agave lemonade, the fried green tomatoes with their amazing GTG sauce, free chili popcorn!, and a steak salad. I'm guessing this place is labeled "vegan" not because that's ALL they serve but because vegans can ALSO eat here based on the menu options. They have great looking menu filled with variety of bowls, wraps, salads, and soups as well as other sides. EVERYTHING is fresh and looks tasty. We ordered the STEAK wraps and chipotle corn chowder. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! The corn chowder has REAL kick. I mean it made my friend sweat! LOL. Great food. Would come here more often if I lived closer. Prices are totally reasonable as well. Green Tomato Grill is great! I must say, this restaurant definitely exceeded my expectations. At first I thought that it must taste just like Chipotle or it sucks entirely but I was actually very pleasantly surprised. I've ordered the chile verde bowl with steak, twice already. It served with veggies and white or brown rice. You can either chose regular or large and I feel that regular is big enough for one person. The vegetables are cooked well with great flavor. The steak is cooked just right, not overdone and they give you a good portion. Not just a few measly pieces like they tend to do at Chipotle. You can also request the degree of spiciness. I've ordered spicy and it definitely was. What's great about this location is that there are benches outside to sit on with overhead covering. Makes for a nice lunch date. I wouldn't say that this place has super duper authentic Mexican salsa's made and ready to eat but they do have substitutes such as Tabacsco, Cholula, Sriracha and garlic chili. What I like is that the food doesn't taste greasy or salty. My bowl was fixed with delicious natural flavors. If you want to be extra healthy, just exclude the rice from you order. As I continue my search for vegan places to eat, I finally made it here and tried out the tofu bowl. It was very good. I had a vegan dessert and also tried the popcorn, all excellent. I will be back to try other things, although it appears the vegan offerings are limited. They also have a lot of gluten free stuff, which I like to see. read more

I am in love with their popcorn and cucumber ginger mint lemonade, SO GOOD. The food is always fresh. I've never had an issue with ordering online or over the phone, everything is always correct. Even when you dine in, your food comes out quick regardless of how busy they are. Customer service is sometimes a hit or miss depending on whom you get at the register. But the older gentlemen with the glasses is always so sweet && accommodating. This place has a perfect amount of indoor/outdoor seating. Chalk and crayons for kids to play with is definitely a great distraction. With all the fast food && junk out there, Green Tomato Grill is a great healthy alternative that'll keep you coming back for more! read more

Unfortunately what we ordered didn't taste as good as the menu descriptions. They sounded exciting but in the end we had a hodgepodge of food that wasn't satisfying and the flavors were a bit off. Sometimes boring is best and the ambitious healthy fast food here is far from boring. I give them many kudos for putting this type of food out there to be enjoyed by the masses. Fried green tomatoes were too fusiony for me. I wanted authentic southern. It was strange that they had a sweetness to them that distracted from the savory factory. Bummed to not love this dish. We also shared the tofu bowl. Two hungry people with a bowl of tofu and delicious fixin's would normally annihilate the plate and leave nothing behind. We left quite a bit behind because the food wasn't doing it for us. Best thing we had was the free popcorn with yelp check in. Oh well. I'm glad this establishment is out there doin' what they do and having people enjoy it. We need more establishments that focus on healthy fast foods. read more

I liked the poke bowl, though there wasn't much tuna (maybe like 12 cubes), the sesame lime vinaigrette (I think that's what it was) was light and refreshing, and the addition of edamame beans sold it for me. Choice of rice, mixed greens, or halfsies, that last option being the one I chose. Ultimately, I would make the drive to North Shore Poke in Huntington Beach, cause those guys give it to ya. The flatbread was great, though; all the hefty, vicious-sounding crunch you wanted in a panini but with a denser bread. That, and I'm a deathly big fan of arugula. Sold~! I've driven by a dozen times & finally stopped for lunch. What a pleasant surprise! Very clean, organized with plenty of comfortable seating. The menu has a variety of options from bowls, wraps & salads. The big plus for me was the use of the "V" and "GF" labels on the menu items and even the sauces (whoo hooo!). I had the Greek Steak Wrap which was excellent. They were very accommodating & gave the Mediterranean sauce (Non dairy) instead of the one that came w/it. Went today with my son ... Excited to see all the gluten free items. First the guy at register was older gentleman not in a t shirt like rest of workers. He was having a hard time getting everything entered correctly. That was fine and not the reason for the two stars, but wanted to note it. When the food came out mine was not correct, so I sent it back. Not a big deal, it happens. The issue was when the food was brought to table I was in rest room. When I noticed It didn't have a tooth pick like the first one, (sometimes tooth picks are used In restaurants to mark gluten free meals). I went in and personally asked " is the gluten free" I was told yes, and I asked again are you sure and was told yes. Well I will bet money it was NOT gluten free because I've been sick ever since... I gave two stars because it did taste good. And I should of known better and listened to my intuition when I noticed it didn't have a toothpick. But they should be more careful when dealing with food allergies. read more

I work at the GameStop right around the corner and eat here at least two to three times a week. I've been going since day one and couldn't be more grateful that it exists. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous. I was able to turn all of my coworkers onto the restaurant as well and they've been loving it. The food always hits the spot. I really do recommend creating your own bowl so you can get the most out of your meal. My favorite meal is the Thai Peanut sauce with chicken, rice, tomatoes, corn, avocado, and spinach. The portions are very good, I generally never finish a whole bowl on a first sitting. For a lighter meal I'll occasionally get a small salad with an order of crispy chick peas and a lemonade. Equally delicious. The only thing I haven't enjoyed there is the shrimp. It's not bad but just not my favorite so that's really more of a personal thing. Overall I really recommend it especially if you're looking for a healthy alternative. read more

Delicious healthy food! It's one of the only restaurants we go to regularly as we usually don't go out to eat. The Thai peanut shrimp bowl is tasty, even though we substitute tofu for the shrimp. Awesome hole in the wall! Very tentative staff with great suggestions. I had the summer blackened calamari burrito, it was packed with great flavor and you could tell the ingredients are FRESH! It had a very nice balance so that nothing was over powering. It's true to the description and you can taste each component in it. Only complaint would be I wished it was crispier, other than that I don't have any. Food is novel compared to other fast joints I have been to. Try the place for yourself, it won't be a bad experience that's for sure. Ambiance was very casual. Was looking for a healthy meal option in the area and was not disappointed. Ordered the chicken Caesar wrap with a spinach wrap, a pineapple berry agave lemonade, which really hit the spot on this hot day, and some popcorn. The wrap was tasty and filling, with plenty of pieces of chicken. The popcorn is seasoned with lemon and adobo and was just great. They bring your food over to your table, and our server was very nice and sincere. I highly recommend Green Tomato Grill and will be back. read more

I looked at the menu for Green Tomato Grill several times and never really saw anything that jumped out at me. However, one day we were hungry so I took a chance, pulled it up, and checked out the menu again. It looked delicious so I decided we should check it out. A short drive and we were. As soon as we walked in I immediately liked the decor. It feels clean and fresh. As we ordered I loved that they have turkey sausage. Yay for non pork eaters! It's so hard to find a place that offers a turkey option. I ordered a breakfast wrap and it was very tasty. The salsa they gave us added a nice kick. They also brought over some cilantro lime popcorn that was good. It didn't taste like they just threw some seasoning on Orville Redenbacher's. They pop it there fresh. YES! The rest of the menu looked really good so we'll definitely be back to check out lunch and dinner. read more

The service was also great - it seemed like she was the manager and she was very helpful and friendly. I asked her for recommendations on the lemonade and she asked if I wanted to sample them, which I was very happy that she offered me! The food was great as well, very fresh with generous portions. I came here for the first time yesterday. I think I had heard about it somewhere before, but I can't remember. So when I was perusing through yelp to find something to eat and came across this, I saw that it had good reviews and decided to check it out. The outside of this location didn't seem all that interesting but the interior was cute and cozy. I was happy to see their food selection was on the healthier side AND for a decent price! I ended up ordering the southwest steak salad and a cup of the Chipotle corn chowder. Both were top notch, but as a medium-rare steak lover myself, the steak in the salad was a little on the tough side. However, it's not really something that would deter me from coming back. The soup was delicious and I would definitely order it again. This place seems to me to be along the same lines as tender greens and salad Republic, but a major plus for me is their pricing. I would definitely come back again, but would need a second tasting before giving it 5 stars. read more

"Healthy" fast food? I don't know about that.... I guess if you compare it's healthiness to a fast-food burger, then yes, its healthier. If you order fried anything, I'm sorry but it ain't healthy. I think what made them addicting was the sauce that it came with. -[[ Chipotle BBQ Shrimp Melt ]]- This was recommended to me by the extremely nice cashier. It was good, but again, not great. It was pretty much a shrimp quesadilla with barbecue sauce. Of note, if you are trying to eat "healthy" this dish was like 700 calories!!!! -[[ Chile Verde Steak Bowl ]]- I felt the meat was kind of dry.... and that's already a turn off. The rest of the bowl was okay... it had chili verde sauce, and cilantro lime rice topped with avocado, black beans, corn, cilantro, onions, and peppers... that's pretty much all i can say about it. I wasn't impressed -{{ Free popcorn for checking in }}- It was good and got addicting. It kind of reminds me of popcorn with like a cool ranch doritos seasoning. -{{ Overall tastiness experience }}- I don't know... As an added bonus, they also have the BEST ice out of their soda machine! (Small, slushy ice cubes!) I'm giving this place 4 stars because it's fast, easy, and at least 3 decent belly stuffing VEGAN options! I was in Villa Park randomly and needed to find a vegan place, I quickly typed in "vegan friendly" on google maps and bam! "Green Tomato Grill"! The prices seemed really reasonable and so I gave it a shot! Everyone who worked there was really sweet, and I honestly don't remember the last time I ate a vegan meal that was under 10$! The Thai tofu wrap was really good, the BBQ tofu bowl's BBQ sauce was a little heavy on the ketchup side, but still delicious.
