01/17/26 Friday Came in the evening to grab some breads for a busy weekend. The prices are comparable to 168 Market and the breads are fresher with more selection. Price ranged from $2.75-$3.75 per bread. Small and cozy interior. Very warm for some reason but we didn't mind since it's winter. It was pretty quiet. I think folks tend to go to bakeries earlier in the day for more selection and fresher bread. They have a good mix of classic and interesting new breads like rose bread (not depicted), but a lot of them were sold out. We ate the bread the next day and it still tasted very fresh. My favorite was the matcha bread with yogurt filling. The taro bun had real bits of taro in the center. Wish there was a little more though. I was looking for tea leaf wrapped rice with bits of pork, beans and thousand year egg. Today, they did not have any, but I instead got some wintermelon pastries. The store is not that big and feels like a small mop and pop type establishment. The staff seem a little new and had a lot of questions for the owner. Stopping by this bakery shop every now and then when I am in this plaza. This is a local Hong Kong style bakery that's been around for more than a decade. The bakery sits where the old Taipan Bakery used to be. However, ownership has changed again since March of this year. The bakery shop is cozy and clean but small with no seating. Worker was nice, friendly, and helpful. The selections were limited. We got there around noon and they're out of a lot of stuff already. They are famous for their egg tarts so we got a few of the classic ones. We also got a Taiwanese pastry, which is a new item recommended by the worker, and last pack of the Almond Raisin Bun. Classic Egg Tart The custard filling is smooth but lack of that rich creamy flavor. The crust is not as flaky as the one you get at the dim sum place. It's good size and wasn't overly sweet. Taiwanese Pastry This pastry is savory but the meat inside the filling is a bit tough, not my cup of tea. Almond Raisin Bun It was surprisingly good. Fresh, soft, and not doughy with a hint of sweetness. Overall, breads and egg tarts were decent. I would like to try their egg white tart and crispy layer cake next time. read more

Called in to order a crispy cake - sponge cake with light cream frosting and crispy phyllo dough in the middle. Each quarter sheet is $25 and can be cut into 20 pieces. Ordered two cakes for 30 people which turned out to be more than enough. The crispy cake used to be packaged in a pink box (like the donut shoes) but now comes in a fancier white box with gold labeling of the store name. Stamp card available! 1 stamp for every $15 spent. Collecting 10 stamps earns $15 off next visit. FYI - We were asked to pay via phone for the cakes. Parking situation in this plaza is awful during peak times on the weekends. Service was quick and efficient for a small bakery. Very casual pick up and go type of place. The egg tarts were ok but breads fell short. I'm not a big fan of the almost-shortcrust style shells for the yellow egg tart ($3 each) as it was a bit dry and crumbly; but, both the gelatinous filling and crust resembled dimsum cart egg tarts. I'd get this for the nostalgia, even though I prefer the creamy croissant style egg tarts. The portuguese egg tarts ($2.35 each) were smaller but had that layered, crispy, buttery shell. Its filling was also not as sweet and very rich. The chicken pie crust was hearty but also on the drier side, filled with ground chicken, carrots, peas. I tried three different sweet breads. The flavors didn't match the description (matcha, rose) and the wheat taro bread was incredibly dry. While I love small businesses, there are so many better options for asian breads and pastries in this area. Overall, I am unlikely to return but I would only get their portuguese egg tarts or try an egg white tart (they ran out at 4pm) if I were to come back! read more

An early morning with a craving for pastries and coffee led us to Simply Splendid. Arrived as they were just opening. They were still baking and slowly bringing out items so we didn't have all the menu options available to us. Lucky for us the Portuguese tarts were ready. Grabbed a couple of the tarts along with a couple other warm, fresh breads. Warmed up the tarts when we got home. They are not warm like the freshly baked bread items. But the flakey, creamy tarts paired well with our coffee. Would come back just for the tarts. Service was ok. They were very focused on phone calls and orders so I won't fault them for it. Coffee and teas were available but nothing hot. We were told them only had plastic cups so only had iced drinks. I am interested in trying the HK Style Coffee. Plenty of parking in the plaza lot when it's not too busy. Beware..once all the businesses are open, finding parking becomes a bit chaotic. read more

10/2025 I wanted to enjoy this place but the red bean and sesame mochi was a huge let down. The skin is unbelieveably thick and certain bites, the flour was hard (assuming it wasn't kneaded thoroughly.) The sesame paste was decent but not great. Still can't believe the skin was THAT thick. I got the crispy napoleon: and the outside cake was fine and the crispy part wasn't that as crispy as I expected. I have a very specific weakness for egg tarts... and I can't believe I'm only learning that you can get a HK egg tart - with egg whites only!! Honestly, this whole discovery was purely accidental. Last Christmas my brother brought two dozen egg tarts to Famsgiving from Simply Splendid, 1 dozen HK egg tarts and 1 dozen Portuguese egg tarts. I was craving them and wanted to bring a few to a small party. I saw in their display they had HK egg white tarts and mentally thought, "that's interesting, the yolk is the best part! who would order an egg white tart?" and proceeded to order 3 HK egg tarts and 3 Portuguese egg tarts. I pulled out of the parking lot and wanted to crack the box open in case they were still a bit warm (to prevent any condensation from forming -- that's just me being extra; I just wanted to continue to waft in the wonderful smells, the tarts were only lightly warm still, no risk of condensation occurring) and that's when I saw that I had left with 3 HK egg WHITE tarts and not 3 HK egg tarts! Alas - I was running late already (always) so off we went. I was mentally preparing myself for disappointment, but was SO SURPRISED at how good the HK egg white tart was! Came here recently as a little breakfast treat post-workout at the gym down the street. There's a good amount of parking in the plaza and the shop wasn't too busy during the 11AM hour. It's quaint with plenty of pastry options at at an affordable price. Staff are helpful and work quick at the register. I had the Portuguese egg tarts and they were so good! The custard was nice, soft, and smooth, and the outer breading wasn't as messy in texture as other places I've had them at. I really appreciate that it left less of a mess because that meant I could eat it in my car without worrying about a big clean up after! read more

I think you're also able to reserve egg tarts by calling ahead to come pay and pick up. They sell a variety of Asian breads, Asian package desserts, and Asian drinks. Egg tarts don't come straight from the oven, so they are on the colder side. They do keep the ready-made egg tarts in the warm refrigerator. Regular Egg tarts: Egg tarts look so glossy with a deep rich egg yolk color. I've never seen egg tart have this type of color before. The crust is between dense and flaky. Portuguese Egg tarts: More gooey compared to the regular egg tarts with a slight polka burnt stamp on top of the crust. Came for the Egg Tarts, left with some other goodies. My one small gripe is that the Egg Tarts aren't warm (sad face), but their flavors are so good especially the classic HK-dimsum style egg tarts! Flakey and eggy in the best ways, just warm them in the microwave for a few seconds to get them warm... Portuguese egg tarts weren't bad either, but I think I just like the classic egg tarts more. Their baked goodies were pretty good/standard. Parking is shared lot with the plaza of other restaurants and supermarket, so it can get crowded. I loveeeee when I stumble into a gem, and this was one of them! If you live in SGV, you know that this plaza can get packed! I came to order take out from a restaurant and parked right in front of this bakery. It's def not the biggest bakery but it has so much to offer. We got there a little later in the afternoon on a Saturday and they were out of so much stuff! Note to self: go earlier next time. Anyway, my partner ended up grabbing a few baked goods and I got a radish sesame pastry. I actually really liked the radish sesame pastry, it reminded me of a bao but with the flakey pastry dough and sesame seeds. Inside has a modern feel to the bakery, parking is a little rough in this plaza during the weekends. Their Egg Tart filling was more on the gelatin texture side than I'd prefer. The crust was also not as flaky as I'd like, more solid like an American pie crust than buttery and flaky. Their Portuguese Tart was much better. This is review just for their Crispy Cake (sorry, not sure what it's called in English). A co-worker only ever eats this cake from this bakery for their birthday so for their birthday this year we ordered one and had another co-worker pick it up and bring it to the office. We got the medium size which feeds 40. The cake really is very very good. A perfect sponge, fresh cream and the crispy layer gives it a nice crunch! The only con about the cake is that it really should be eaten immediately because the crispy portions will soften over time and it just isn't as good. Also, I would keep the cake plain. We asked them to write Happy Birthday in Chinese on it but agreed it didn't look all that great. read more

Solid eggtarts. Here is my rank & thoughts. 1. HK eggtart: Nice size & weight. Custardy & eggy. Flaky tart. Even ratio between custart & tart. 2. White eggtart: Unique, never seen it anywhere else. HK style but made with eggwhite. Probably healthier for your heart but doesn't taste as eggy. If you come later, may have run out. 3. Portuguese eggtarts: Smaller than the other 2 but good too. Even ratio between custard & crust. Flaky crust, if you toast it at home it gets even better. 4. Coconut tart: Also ok but honestly kinda forgettable. Not as greasy & flaky as I'd like it to be. 5. Black sesame sponge cake: Not an eggtart but it's so soft like cloud. Personal favorite, solid 10/10 This is a small bakery with no seating available. The bread, egg tarts, and HK Lemon Iced tea from Simply Splendid Bakery is awesome! There are four kinds of egg tarts here - egg white, traditional yellow, Portuguese style, and cookie crust traditional yellow. I didn't try the cookie crust, but the first three were delicious! I didn't think I would like the egg white one, but it surprised me and I loved it. The egg custard is not too sweet and has a nice texture that is smooth and soft to the bite. The crust also had the perfect texture and good even at room temperature! The price is not too bad, just under $2 for each. The bread is good from here. I especially liked their hot dog bun, Sausage Mushroom bread, and Pineapple BBQ Pork buns. The HK Lemon Iced tea is good here. Make sure you really stab those lemon slices because that's how you get the traditional HK lemon tea taste! They have a stamp card and you earn a stamp for every $10 you spend. Simply Splendid Bakery has a wide variety of delicious Asian pastries and breads. My favorites include their taro mochi bun and pineapple custard buns. They also have an interesting addition to the typical egg tart selections offered at most Asian bakeries, and that is their egg white tart. I don't know what I was expecting when I took my first bite, but it tasted strongly of egg whites, which for some reason caught me off guard. Again, I'm not sure what I was initially expecting but it wasn't that. Lol. However, though I was surprised by the taste I did enjoy it. The egg white tart was lightly sweet and I loved how silky and smooth it was. It's definitely a unique option that I haven't seen elsewhere. When I was little, my uncle took me here to get their crispy cake. It was always so fresh and fluffy. The name changed, I believe. I haven't been here for quite a long time. I was browsing on Yelp and this place happened to popped up. Seem like they are now famous for their Portuguese & white egg tarts. They now even got drinks. Wanted to go early but ended up arriving at noon. They didn't have anymore Portuguese egg tarts so I got two reg and 1 white egg tarts. The white was really good. It was so smooth & silky. The crust was so flaky. 10/10 I didn't tried the reg ones since it was for my grandpa. Will try next time and hopefully, I can get the Portuguese ones. The milk tea was ok. Nothing to wow about. I absolutely love Hong Kong style bakeries, so I stopped by for some fun pastries and drinks! Not only are all their pastries and breads fluffy and delicious, their egg tarts are phenomenal! The Portuguese egg tart was my favorite, and the crust on these were all so flaky. Their Hong Kong iced milk tea and iced lemon tea were both super refreshing as well! I also got a box of their Ceylon drip tea which is imported directly from Hong Kong so you know it's legit! My favorite pastry was their hot dog buns, and everything was so fun to bring to the park for a little picnic! We've ordered and purchased several birthday cakes here, and the cakes are always fresh and moist. I love their fruit cakes and taro cakes best personally. This time, i ordered a cake for pickup on Thanksgiving day, and I prepaid over the phone. The taro cake we ordered had fresh taro bits in between soft vanilla cake. The frosting on top was light, fluffy, and delicious. It was $35 for a 8inch round cake, and it was amazing. We will definitely be back for more cakes in the future. read more

I've tried the bolo bao, bbq bolo bao, egg tarts, and chicken pie here and it's pretty average. Actually if anything I would come here for the bolo bao because it reminds me most of Chinatown. The Cookie crust doesn't cut your mouth, it still separates but can still taste the bao and the cookie. It's pretty fair and stands up to what it is. Everything else was 4/10 for me. read more

Cute little bakery that we found. Was looking for coffee and stumbled across this place. A little disappointed that everything was emptied/sold out by the time we walked in (around 9am??) But I did manage to grab a wife cookie, hong kong milk tea, and an hong kong coffee. I was very disappointed in the wife cookie. It was more pastry than filling. Not my cup of tea. But the pastry portion was pretty tasty and flakey. Hong Kong coffee tasted like it was made with cold brew coffee which in theory I like the added caffeine, but did not jive well with the flavors.
