I had no idea this cinema existed. Honestly this whole area is a mystery to me. Upon arriving I was pleasantly surprised. Greenbelt cinema offers awesome FREE activities for kids and those that help their community. They offered a free bag of popcorn, books, and resources to parents via a program through the University of Maryland. Story time is about 45 minutes, the story is on the big screen. There are dance breaks for the more active kids (mine), and there was puppet too. I think Greenbelt Cinema is awesome for pouring into the community and I will continue to support! read more

This is a cozy old-fashioned theater in the Greenbelt area! The tickets were cheap and the concession stand was enticing. The theater was filled with locals, which is always a good sign. The seats are "old-fashioned" (i.e. not the most comfortable) and the Screen 2 theater was cozy. The sound system and the projection system were good. I recommend a visit. read more

What a gem, from the 1980s prices to the style accents that seem both original and old-fashioned. I was also thrilled to find a theater that was still playing the Oscar-nominated documentary shorts. The one thing I would ask is that the all-herbal tea selection be supplemented with caffeinated teas. I ordered a tea before looking at the selection, which was further down into the theater than the point of sale, and I had to awkwardly ask for a refund because there was no black or green tea option. Alternatively, the menu could specify that the tea is all herbal, or the person at the counter could mention it before the sale is made. On the plus side, I didn't notice the musty smell older reviews have cited. Overall, I'm delighted with this small-town throwback. read more

As a former employee and lover of this theater, I have sat on this review for a long time. While I was employed there, i observed the owner being blantantly transphobic and elitist - coworkers were treated like trash and the high turnover reinforces that. I worked hard and when I left there was barely any acknowledgement, and the owner was uncomfortably passive aggressive. Old Greenbelt Theatre transports you back in time with its original design and old school feel (in a good way). The theater was recently renovated but I'm glad that they maintained the integrity of the building. It's a one-room theater movie house but the room is pretty large and so is the screen. The seats were okay and I had no problem seeing the screen (we were close to the back and seated in the center). I can't speak on the concession stand or the bathroom but I'm sure those are just as fine too. I really like indie films and documentaries (I came here to see 'Eye in the Sky') and while I love E Street, it's good to know that I don't have to go into DC to see such films--I can see them right here in Prince George's County. If you like a theater with character and charm, and want a break from the ubiquitous movie theater chains that we've grown accustom to seeing, give Old Greenbelt Theatre a try, I think you'll like it. read more

Old Greenbelth Theatre is a wonderful gem of a theater in the area. It is an independent movie theater, and thus has the freedom to play movies that it wants. Since there is only one cinema, they only play one movie at a time. Matinee prices are reasonable (or sometimes free), and regular prices are $9! They do a number of local events and talks where you can speak with neighbors about issues that affect the community. Popcorn and concessions are cheap and some are locally made. It's a great place to watch a movie, with lines that are nearly non-existent. Parking can be a little challenging, but you can usually find a place either in the storefront lot, the public lot or even street parking. read more

Quaint is the adjective I will use to describe Old Greenbelt Theatre. From the exterior ticket booth to the marquee to the single screen it was a throwback and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Despite its nostalgic feel, the screen and sound were on par with the multi-screen theaters. My only complaints are: 1) the slight musty/moldy odor that allergy sufferers know, and 2) the seats were not the most comfortable. read more

Old Greenbelt theatre provides classic and new movies on a beautiful large screen. Today, I enjoyed "The King and I" as it was intended; in CinemaScope. I was surprised by richness of colors and details of each scene. The sound was great, too. Only a real theater can do justice to classic master pieces. Another way this theatre shines is the people, both the staff and patrons. I felt like I went back in time to a small town theater where everyone knows each other on a first name bases. For example, one of the patrons brought a costume from the movie for show and tell after the show. read more

I hate to be the bringer of negativity - but I had an extremely difficult time enjoying a movie at this theater due to a strong, distinctive musty smell that many of us with severe allergies to mold know well and fear. It hit me the second we walked into the theater like a brick wall. I had already taken my medicine, but within 30 minutes I had a severe sinus headache and my eyes were burning. I'm not sure if they're having recent issues or this is a persistant problem, but I would exercise caution attending a movie here if you have serious allergies. The staff here was really friendly and it's really clear there's a positive, community oriented vibe here. read more

I attended along with my other stay at home mom to a monday kids reading and it was so much fun ! Upon entering the staff was friendly and upbeat with the kids ! They got free popcorn and it was a good amount of people attended. I also loved that it was free and they got to socialize and color afterwards . it was also a relief of not worrying about if my child was disturbing others since it was a family friendly event. Once a month on a monday i believe they host it ? eh don't quote me but you can always call and ask ! It was a great experience with my daughter and i and we'll be sure to come back ! only down side was it is an old building but good for those who like the historic experience ! i will definitely recommend to other families ! read more

My mother was in town and wanted to see Mr. Holmes at the Old Greenbelt Theater. What a great time we had! The theater, recently renovated took all of us back to our youth. My mother, who grew up in the 30s and 40s, and my sister and I who grew up in the 60s and 70s. We were all taken back to a simpler time of one theater, one movie. The new interior design is fantastic and the ambiance is small-town, traditional theater. I read an earlier posting that complained about the seats, I am tall and need a lot of leg room. I thought the seats were nice and there was plenty of room for me to relax. Clearly the Old Greenbelt Theater is a gem and should be a destination for those who prefer tradition over modern, mega-plex buzz and light shows! Three thumbs up! read more

I love the Old Greenbelt Theatre. They actually have healthy options that taste great like dairy free popcorn. The seats are comfortable. It's located in the Roosevelt Center, which I love. They have a wide array of movie types. I loved the Sherlock Holmes movie. Everyone there has been very friendly and helpful. It's a great addition to the Roosevelt Center and I look forward to seeing many more movies there in the future. In fact, I have prebooked tickets to a movie in November. read more

This is a fine, old-style movie house of a sort rarely seen anymore. It is single screen and recently renovated with a clean interior and comfortable seating. It specializes in high quality cinema, to include art house films and superior Hollywood and foreign films. They don't shove a load of tacky previews in your faces along with averts of local car dealerships and other sordid junk. The staff service is excellent and very friendly. It is like being transported back in time to the way movie houses used to be before the advent of mega-huge, multi-screen behemoths that inhabit the landscape now. read more

I love this theatre and wish I could go more often. You can't beat the ticket prices, and the selection of movies that this single-screen, Art Deco theatre chooses are some of the best. I haven't tried any of the concessions yet. The renovation was well worth the wait! If you're a movie lover this is really a gem in Historic Greenbelt. Also, if you appreciate architecture and design then you'll find this is a great example of art deco architectural style typical of the period in which it was built (late 1930s). The theater sits within Roosevelt center, the original shopping/town center for this New Deal cooperative city, Greenbelt, planned and constructed by the federal government in 1937. Within the last couple years the concessions area/main lobby, sitting areas, and bathrooms were renovated so it's clean and new when you walk in. At the concession counter you can get all the regular movie fare, but they also have a bunch of local snacks and candy from around Maryland as well as some interesting beverages. It is a single screen theater with great digital picture and sound. I don't think the seating and theater space have been redone yet, but there may be plans in the works. In any case it's still very cool and the seats are plenty comfy (although new seating throughout would be a plus). Note that it isn't stadium seating as most theaters are today, but Ive had no problems seeing the films (no obstructions). They play art/indie films and host community oriented events and lectures, BUT you can also catch first run films playing at all the big movieplexes (i.e., amc/regal and other big theaters). Greenbelt's wonderful restored art deco movie theater is a real treasure. The non-profit cinema screens great art house and foreign films, documentaries, cult classics, and children's movies, and it's cheaper than seeing a film at Bethesda Row or E Street. The staff is friendly, the concessions feature locally sourced baked goods and treats, as well as popcorn and movie candy. It also has special equipment for the hearing and vision impaired. Frequent moviegoers can buy memberships that come with discounts and perks. What's not to love! read more

It is so wonderful to be able to experience the classic Greenbelt Theatre after its recent renovations. The new lobby area and bathrooms are wonderful, and the new management has really upped their game. The concessions stand now offers a fantastic selection of local treats, and already their new Cult Classic and Children's film series have given us the opportunity to see some longtime favorites like Ferris Bueller and My Neighbor Totoro on the big screen! We are also looking forward to the upcoming showing of Rosenwald, with the director giving a special presentation - what a treat! This is a great opportunity to experience a real historic theater, and support a great community organization. I am proud to be a member of the Friends of the Greenbelt Theatre, and feel very fortunate to have this wonderful resource in our community. read more
