It is downtown, so finding parking can be horrendous unless you pay an extra $10 mo to park in their garage. I had to park very far away to take the 6 pm bellydance class on Monday and I didn't feel safe walking alone to my car. So, I may have to pay that fee just to be closer to the building. Other than that, I haven't experienced any negatives.

I also wish they had a regular hot tub but they do have a small saltwater pool that is warm. They offer child care and discounts on your monthly fee depending on your financial status and if you're a city or school employee. They also have an outdoor pond that you can walk around when the wheather is nice.

I let them know I was utilizing that equipment and their respond was that I could move to the other side. Well, I could but so could she, and I already had weights, plates and foams set up in that spot for a particular exercise. It made me feel very uncomfortable and she refused to leave my stuff (including phone, and water bottle) versus going to the other side when no one was there. They need more space so people are not on top of each other. Get rid of the 10 extra treadmills no one uses and create a corner for stretching or body weight exercises (burpees, etc). If this location wasn't on my route, I'd drive over to Blocker.

The place is run by teenagers that have no clue, you can never talk with a manager. I cannot wait to leave the YMCA - I have already been at another place for 3 years. my husband use the Y one a week. we go to the pool twice a year. Totally ridiculous, probably did not want to pay OT. The rules are all geared for insurance. I have had it.

Despite this, it wasn't until a month into the program--during a conversation with one of his counselors about some concerns they had--that I learned the counselors working directly with him were unaware of his diagnosis. I was told that now that they were informed, they would "be more patient moving forward," which is a bit concerning--especially since counselors should be patient with all young children, regardless. Another issue was swim time. My son is somewhat hesitant around water. Prior to enrollment, I was assured that there would be at least one counselor in the pool with the children to support those who may feel anxious. I understand that the camp staff are responsible for many children and that some require significant attention. However, based on the information I was given, I expected a level of support that would make my son feel safe and included--particularly in environments he finds challenging. That wasn't the case, and I later learned the pool is 4ft deep--about the same height as my son. With no adult in the water, I don't feel the environment is safe for such young kids as small as a 5 year old, especially one who isn't completely comfortable in a 4ft pool. I also experienced a lack of confidentiality and security. During the first week, neither I nor my son's other approved pickup adults were asked for ID at pick up. Only when I brought it up did someone check--once. Additionally, when I raised a concern about my son's stretched-out shirt at pick up, the counselor named the other child involved, which felt unprofessional and violated that family's privacy. As someone who holds fond memories of attending YMCA's summer camp myself, I had high hopes my son would have a similarly positive experience. Unfortunately, due to these communication gaps, safety concerns and unmet expectations, that hasn't been the case.

I have done aerobics in the pool and have had hand full on hair in my fingers. Which totally grossed me out. Sometimes the lifeguards don't show or they can't get the door unlocked at 5:30 am to open up the pool area. No toilet paper or soap in the showers. It's crazy!! Gym area is not air conditioned well probably because the dehumidifier doesn't work. They need an operational manager there that actually cares and comes out to look at everything and everyone. She invited me to drop in for a class to learn the latest and most popular line dances! She knows I love to dance, hence that's how we met... at ODU :) say less girl, I am there!! I visited the site a few weeks ago (on a Saturday) and from the looks of the parking lot, I thought it would be crowded inside. Boy was I wrong, the place is awesome inside! It was not crowded at all. The women's locker room was tidy and smelled fresh. Once I arrived upstairs to the dance room, I did notice workout (machines) equipment as well as free weights. Something for everyone is here! The dance class lasted for about 75 minutes, and it was a total workout! Beginner friendly and Amy makes everyone feel super comfortable and is willing to repeat steps over and over and over :) I didn't think I would work up a sweat doing line dancing, but it was a sweaty ordeal indeed - I loved it! I highly recommend you check out this location. I traveled from Suffolk, therefore it's definitely a hike, but on this day I was planning to be in the area, so it made sense to drop in. You cannot beat this waterfront property. Not a member, like me, just pay a drop in fee and get your body moving :) Have fun and enjoy life :)
