Really I'd give a 3.5 since there's been so much construction and the spaces are small to do anything in without sharing breathing air with someone. I was doing a sets routine and had my set up all ready and was in the middle of the second exercise when someone came over and started moving my stuff. I let them know I was utilizing that equipment and their respond was that I could move to the other side. Well, I could but so could she, and I already had weights, plates and foams set up in that spot for a particular exercise. It made me feel very uncomfortable and she refused to leave my stuff (including phone, and water bottle) versus going to the other side when no one was there. They need more space so people are not on top of each other. Get rid of the 10 extra treadmills no one uses and create a corner for stretching or body weight exercises (burpees, etc). If this location wasn't on my route, I'd drive over to Blocker. read more

I have been a member since ymca GB since it opened - Monthly family rate until two years ago (approx 29k spent). I cannot believe the outside pool was not open at 10 am on July 4th. my husband and I were laying on our towel reading, and was told we had to leave. The place is run by teenagers that have no clue, you can never talk with a manager. I cannot wait to leave the YMCA - I have already been at another place for 3 years. my husband use the Y one a week. we go to the pool twice a year. Love a great indoor and outdoor option for pools and this YMCA in Chesapeake has both. The outdoor swimming pool and play area is seasonal. This Great Bridge Y has been a favorite over the years. I use to visit here with frequency and found it to be clean with super staff. Parking can be challenging during peak times however. The lot is kept clean. The facility offers a variety of programs for its members. I am only familiar with aquatics. The indoor six lane 25 yard pool is well maintained and chlorinated properly. Guards are always on duty and often are young, but professional. Tide Swimming offers a club swimming schedule at this location. There is also an aerobic pool and two water slides. The deck has been tidy. Locker rooms are good size and spic and span. The outdoor pool is a huge hit in the Summer and offers a large deck to sun. I would recommend the Great Bridge YMCA if this is a gym that's in your area. It's not new, but well maintained and family friendly. 3.5 rounding up. read more

This is our home Y and I'm writing this from the perspective of the occasional gym goer who has a child under 1! My wife and I love it! The childcare option is clutch. The staff is soooo friendly and they take such good care of our little one. There's enough gym equipment in the weight room and cardio sections to find what you need to get a good workout in. Equipment is updated and new and they take good care of it (clean and operational). The coffee bar is a nice added touch. When I'm able to sign up for classes, the instructors are enthusiastic and wonderful. Definitely try out on of the cycling classes if you have the chance! read more

Thank God for the Ymca!! It's heaven for parents that need a break. I was able to take the kids to go to the pool since it is spring break. Then after enjoy my own time with some Zumba class while the play at the play zone. They have good staff that watch the kids. The locker rooms are nice and clean and equipped with a sauna. I like that they have a dryer to dry off our swim suits. I can't wait for the summer when the kids can play in the outdoor pool outside. As a member there are great Incentives. They have stay and play and parent night out where u drop your kids off for a few hours on the weekend to have a date night or a break! I love the birthday packages here as members and they have scholarship programs to help u out financially... I recommend the sports and the classes.. especially the summer camps! read more

Overall: Not bad - ok(ish). Gets the job done :/ I basically come here every afternoon when I'm not floating around the ocean. I vary my times, sometimes, but most typically get here around 1400ish although I've been here at almost all hours with the exception of when they open. Wayyyyyyy too early for me. As I write this review, I realize this IS a YMCA and marketed as a family establishment. Nothing against families as I have my own and have brought my kiddos up here a few times and we always have a good time. But, 99.9% of the time I'm riding solo. :) So the goods. Semi-convenient drive home from work (off 168) and about a 15 minute drive from my house. All the staff are super friendly and the facilities are mostly clean. Most of the equipment is usually functional all the time but there are days when something is broke ;) Like today. I counted at least two treadmills down and several of the weight machines were broken (the clip mechanisms that hold your phone was broken). The pool is great when it isn't slammed with kids running around and screaming, same with the gymnasium. There is also a game room with a rock wall that one can drop the younger chitlins off at while you get your sweat on. The bads. I can't stand a crowded gym. At all. It's also expensive at around $100/month for a family membership. Crowded + expensive = :( This facility basically serves Chesapeake (Hickory, Great Bridge, Grassfield, Deep Creek) and probably some in southern Virginia Beach. The free weight room is mostly ridiculous and usually a wait for something or someone is standing one machine over obnoxiously starring at you waiting for you to hurry up and get off their equipment. For me, it's a drawdown. Some people like crowded weight rooms so they can strut around, take mirror selfies, and show off their "gains" but I'm not one of them. So, hit or miss on the over-crowded gym scene leaning mostly to being too crowded. So that's it. Great facility, great location, great staff, just busy and expensive. YMCA should look at building a new facility over in the Grassfield/Deep Creek area as this one is way too busy almost all the time. I used to look at the Y as just a gym, but it is so much more than that. Sure, you can use it as one, and when I have the equipment is always in perfect condition. In fact, you can say that about the whole place. Everything is VERY well maintained, from the pools (yes, pools!) to the saunas, huge hot tub, party rooms, exercise classrooms and equipment, kids play rooms - everything! The atmosphere is safe and friendly - you'll get a lot of smiles here! I'm specifically talking about the Battlefield location in this review, but every YMCA I've been to has had the same level of quality, which does not make this location average, but rather all of them above average. That's relevant because a membership lets you go to any location, not just one. Five stars, obviously. read more

I've been to many YMCAs in the Hampton Roads area, including the one in Elizabeth City and Currituck. This one by far is my favorite. It's the largest (I think), and they even built on a couple years ago. The staff are all very friendly and accommodating. The facility is very clean. They offer a ton of classes ranging from water aerobics to yoga class, to muscle/core building. Their outside pool is huge with a baby/toddler section. They also sell ice cream in the summer. I also take my "work" children there for summer swimming lessons. We've been doing his for over 10 years and the Y have been so accommodating to us. Membership for a family is around $120 so younger to come to get her your money's worth. It's worth it! read more

I've been coming here for the past 2 months for swimming lessons. I've since become a member because they have so many amenities and the staff is very friendly. My daughters absolutely love their swimming instructors and I don't believe you can really go wrong with any of the instructors. In the summer not only is the indoor pool open but also the outdoor pool which has lots of activities for the kids. I believe they even have a day pass for you to use the facilities for the day but I would call ahead to make sure. I have not personally used all the facilities but I know they have a fitness room, exercise room where various classes take place, a children's daycare and of course the pools. read more

I am a stay at home mom, and when you are a stay at home mom...you just can't do the things you use to do. One of the things is...take care of yourself. Its hard to watch a baby and try to exercise. My son barely naps...so I feel like I can't get anything done. Well the YMCA has a daycare that will watch your kids so that you can go get fit, and that is exactly what I do. I drop my 10 month off and my husband and I go workout. It has been nice to actually get a break for an hour from screaming and crying and diaper changes. BUT the daycare could be CLEANER...my son got sick real quick after I put him in there. Its normal...babies get sick, BUT two weeks later I brought him back and after working out I went to pick him up from the daycare...His hands were straight black from crawling on their disgusting floor. IT WAS TERRIBLE...It needs to be cleaned. It makes me nervous about the whole place, just because the daycare was so dirty. Is the equipment being cleaned often? The showers? The Bathrooms? After picking my son up...a day later...I was quick to get sick...and I barely ever get sick! read more

Don't expect to be here anytime after 4pm and expect to get in a serious workout in the gym. This place is filled with folks who I think are about to possibly have heart attacks, or people who are sitting on equipment, not utilizing them.... I tagged along with my nieces for a pool day in the back of the facility. There's a quick check in outside so you don't have to go in to just scan your ID. We sat in a shady area full of picnic tables by the pool and went on in. My nieces all love to play in the shallow end since they've got slides, buckets of water that plop on your head randomly, a jetted area, lap pool, and more. There's even a little cabana area where they sell food and the particular day I went - there was COLDSTONE ice cream! We ended up eating some chickfila that we grabbed and brought inside. So the stars come off for how this place handles certain situations.... #1 - we found fecal matter in the pool since a parent tried to cover up her kid's inability to hold it in by directing it to a filter. We told a lifeguard. Nothing happened. Finally, we ended up telling an actual "adult" AKA the supervisor and the pool was cleared out to clean it up with a net and chemicals. #2 - there was clearly urine on top of a kiddie slide. We reported it again and it felt like it just took a while to get some action to resolving it. I mean, I had to stop kids from getting on the slide myself since no one else was going to until the guy came to clean it up. I'm sure these things happen all the time, but I think it should be handled rather quickly so the rest of us don't have to swim in all of that. read more

I like that this ymca has some different classes than the one a little closer to me. I enjoy the cardio I get from kickboxing. Also the stay and play for the kids is the best I have ever seen. My kids cannot get enough of the rock wall. How fun! They actually like staying for the 3grs that they get and they beg me to go which is good for my figure. So far I have taken Zumba, kickboxing, yoga and step. In a big cardio lover. read more

We enjoy going to this YMCA as a family! My kids love going to the indoor rock wall. There are also two indoor waterslides that help the cold winter days go by. One they are 10 years old and pass a simple swim test they can be in the pool area with the lifeguards while we work out. There is an indoor hot tub, indoor lap pool and second indoor pool. The showers and rest rooms are clean. The have an indoor play area for kids under 10, and a child care area. They is an outdoor sprinkler park and pool also. read more

This is a very nice Y. A major renovation was done a couple of years ago and it helps tip the scale. The locker rooms, restrooms, showers all got a nice modernization. Every area is very kid friendly. There is a nice indoor pool that is adult friendly for lap swimming and kid friendly for fun with a couple of slides, and a shallow pool. There is also a nice sized jaccuzi. The outdoor pool is crazy in the summer. Every kid in great bridge is there. It is definitely kiddie heaven with a huge play area and lots of shallow water for toddlers/non-swimmers. Again there is a slide for bigger kids. I recently had a pool party for my daughter there and they did a wonderful job. Nice employees, friendly staff, clean, well kept facility. read more

High end equipment. Excellent design. A well designed facility overall. But where new and well made equipment raises their status, their customer service and sense of responsibility is anything but considerate. Security is flimsy. And their newsletters fail to reflect their concern for their members. I have waited almost a year to relate this so that it would not interfere with the possibility that this YMCA may have problems making alternations to their security, but they haven't from what I've heard. Last summer I was swimming at this Y's pool. I had left my clothes, wallet, keys, and phone in a locker with a combination wheel lock. After I swam, I returned to the locker room. My lock was missing. The door slightly ajar. My phone was missing. My wallet had been opened and the money stollen. Without changing, I ran to the front desk to report the theft. I collected my items to make sure nothing else was taken. I reported the incident to the police. The front desk associates were sympathetic in that awkward way one gets when trying to empathize with someone in a state of panic. One man mentioned how there had been thefts. Another associate confirmed and said that three others had been robbed, their credit cards stolen, and their accounts attacked. They mentioned how someone should sit in the locker room from now on to keep an eye on customer property. This never happened. Not long after, I was contacted by the Vice President in charge of this YMCA. I was surprised and happy about this level of response. His greeting, however, changed my opinion quickly. "Hello, Mr. M. I'm calling in concern to your theft. I don't have much time however. My son is having a soccer birthday party, so I'll have to be quick." Understandable, but I wondered why he would shorten what obviously should not be a quick drop off of condolences. Especially if I had questions. Which I did. I asked him if the camera footage could be used to spot those walking out of the locker room carrying my items. He rejected the idea and said the detective would have to determine that route. Understandable. I asked why we were not informed as customers of the previous thefts. He refused to acknowledge this idea. He suddenly became irate. He said that he wouldn't do this. That it would decrease membership and sales. I asked him why he was getting angry. His response, that I was attacking him. Challenging his authority. I told him I was not and would appreciate it if he calmed down. Knowing I wasn't going to get any further, I decided to end the call. I didn't have to, though. He decided that as well. If anything, they could at least take the Christian connotation out of the YMCA acronym. Because if business is put first rather than their fellow man, I can understand the opinion some have of hypocrisy of representatives of a faith I share. I continue to attend this Y, but I can't use the locker. After feeling violated in an area that should be safe. I show up in my swim shorts and cannot change out of fear of losing around another $700, which, of course, the Y is not responsible for thefts within their own buildings or their own lockers. I just wish there was a pool at the local recreation centre. Oh yeah, the Y contended the idea at the local town meeting on the basis that it would take customers away. read more

The gym is great but the after school daycare is the worst childcare. The first week my daughter attended, they did not check the drivers license of the person picking up my daughter. Not only that, they did not ask for the person's name to make sure she was on the list and they did not ask the person to sign her out. I talked to the manager, Donte, and he never called me back to follow up on this serious problem. Then, I added more people to the list to pick up my daughter and they failed to add them and then would not let them pick them up. This happened on 2 occasions. They are unorganized and don't take the job seriously. I'm so unsatisfied with the day care, I have to take my daughter out immediately. read more

THEE best ymca I have ever been too! And I though trashmore was great! The staff at the front aren't very welcoming but it's a good thing I don't go to the gym for them... Also the sports director isn't very bright (not saying to be mean) but I love the cardio room and my son LOVES the kids area. Haven't used the weights room yet but I'm sure I will with my husband. We've been to 4 or 5 Ymca facilities and this one is definitely the nicest. The reason I give it a 4 is because customer service isn't up to par. read more

I absolutely love this Y! They have so much to offer their members. My children always find something to do. They have a few areas for supervised play for your children. My boyfriend's daughter's favorite place is the play area that has the tubes and slides. My daughter loves the video game area. My sons spend their time in the gym playing basketball. All of my children love their indoor and outdoor swimming pools. They all took swimming lessons here and have always loved being in the water. The cardio and weight area are on different floors. The cardio area is upstairs and the weight/fitquest area is downstairs. My only issue is the mat area is very small, but the large weight area enables you drag a mat aside and make a spot for your stretching, toning, etc. I've never had a problem with getting on a machine that I prefer or having to wait for a fitquest machine. It can get crowded here but there's plenty of space and room to move around. Lots of great classes to choose from here! Friendly staff. :-) read more

This is the best YMCA in Hampton Roads, especially for people who work out avidly. They have a new two story gym, zumba, many extra workout rooms with classes available, indoor and outdoor pools, a Kid Zone, teenage center, rock climbing, basketball and more. Almost anything you could ask for! I've gone here for years and even held a birthday party. The only complaint I would have is some of the lifeguards. The ones outdoors knew their stuff, but some of them inside- not so much. I came with a summer camp program as an instructor where the students had lessons and free time in the pool. There were 3 lifeguards assigned to do this with us. The problem was that they let children pass the swim test that were not at all comfortable in water or ready for that. They were struggling to keep themselves up during free time. The three lifeguards were talking to each other at the other side of the pool, the deep end, with one sitting on the edge and the others facing her. Their backs were to our children who were in the shallow end alone. Once we had to pull a child out of the pool to keep him from going under, and those lifeguards paid no mind to them. It was a very scary situation I'm afraid I'll have to repeat this week, or any of the following weeks in which we go. read more

Too bad we live too far away to come here. Staff was friendly and helpful. Only bad part to our visit was all the drink machines broke down and we had no water to buy. This is a great YMCA. I take my nieces and nephew here to go swimming and I love the salt water pool. It's a perfect temperature for little ones. The larger pool's temperature is not too bad, but my two year old niece gets cold by the end of swimming. Everyone has been very polite and kind when we're there and they were especially helpful in helping me get acclimated to the facility as a new member.
