I've never written a Yelp review and I thought a long time before writing this one. I feel that it is important for other families to know about our experience so they can prevent the same thing from happening to their children. I would give Dr. Hanford and Greenpoint Pediatric Dentistry a zero if it was possible. Options with our insurance are limited, so we ended up at GPD for both our son and daughter. The work was so poor that both our children needed additional work to correct soon after. After a few months of having her crown put in, our daughter developed an infection because it was not properly sealed, nor the initial cavity completely removed. She needed antibiotics and additional sedation work scheduled to correct. In addition to the quick, sloppy, and careless work, the dentist office is dirty and grim, and none of the staff seem to actually care about young children. They want to get you in and out as quickly as possible despite the involved procedures they perform. We were rushed at every step, spoken to in a condescending and dismissive manner, and never received a follow up from them after our call to complain about our traumatizing experience. They have no intention of taking their time to establish trust with your child. The doctor and his staff will physically restrain your child while you listen to their screams from the other room. They may say your child will not remember any of it, and this is a complete lie. My son still talks about his experience 5 years after the work was done. My daughter started crying hysterically when she heard our regular dentist telling us she needed to go back. We are still so upset about our experience. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this place. read more

This was my first time bringing my daughter here. The place looks clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. For those who are thinking about coming here during this pandemic let me tell you they're taking all the precautions to protect you and themselves. I will update this review probably in another time, I want to give time for my daughter cleaning to see if it was worth. I use to take her to another place and they really take a good deep cleaning of her Teeth, for some reason here they just did the X-ray and brush her teeth not very happy about that. read more

This is a review based on one visit only. Our son had cavities that needed to be pulled. Two or three pediatric dentists tried but my son was a very difficult patient who screamed, struggled and refused the gas. Finally someone recommended this place and they got it done. I think we had Dr Hansford. My son had to have one tooth pulled but they saved the other and more than a year later he is doing well. We go to a neighborhood dentist for checkups. He is still a terrible patient, at least he is much better about brushing his teeth. read more

Do your child a favor, have a second opinion else where. I am not a dentist, however myself grew up with a rough cavity history. and I sensed that my child's dental xray isn't as bad and what Dr Hanford had described. I went with my gut feeling, went to a SECOND dentist in the city, who observed my child's behavior and explained to me that my child's treatment plan can go with just laughing gas and local anesthetic. the amount of teeth that required nerve treatment was cut down in HALF!!! and NO need for the moderate sedation, or anti inflammatory drug, or anti-pain drug (all through IV) as "suggested" by Greenpoint Pediatric Dentistry - all out of pocket fees on those drugs. My child finished the baby root canal treatment three days ago at a different dentist office, with just laughing gas and local anesthetic. no cry, no fuss. will not recommend Greenpoint Pediatric Dentistry to anyone. read more

I have debated for a long time weather to write this review for Greenpoint Pediatric Dentistry. I think it is important to share your experience to help others to make a right decision when it comes to a service for our beloved juniors. My son always has teeth problem and throughout our visits with Dr John; we have been thru over five fillings and two teeth extracts. During one visit for the second teeth extracts. Dr John highly recommended to give my five-years-old son a general anesthesia instead of a local anesthesia. I have explained my concern about general anesthesia given to a young age child. I am very blessed my son is pretty calm. I explained to him that my son been thru root canal(with another dentist) with just local anesthesia and multiple fillings and one teeth extraction (with Dr John ) using only laughing gas and at most local anesthesia without any problem. I don't understand why Dr John is so pushy to give him general anesthesia. My final decision is not to take general anesthesia but only local anesthesia with laughing gas. Dr. John's reaction changed, and I feel like if his opinion isn't agree upon-his attitude changed. At the end when I went out to pay for the laughing gas which generally not covered by our insurance company the charge goes from $50 to $200! I asked why $200 where I have been with you so long and I have been paying $50 for laughing gas. Dr. John said, it is now $200 the office rule changed! I guess when you are disagreeing with him your service fee went up! That's was my last visit to this dentist. read more

I recently went to this Dentist because of its amazing reviews. It was even better that they also took adults as well. Upon entering this establishment I found it cold and rather clinical. Strange for a pediatric dentist. But oh well. I go into the room for my consult. It's a small room with a large charge and piles of stuff everywhere. Some of it files some equipment. Not the usual dentist chair with over head lights etc. Already I'm a little worried about hygiene practices in here as the space looks cluttered. I meet my dentist who isn't dr. John. Ok. Also unexpected. My cleaning Starts and I'm While in general my doctor is very gentle with my cleaning, I'm still concerned about the hygiene practices. I can hear an assistant moving around getting equipment, yet are your gloves clean between rooms that your going in and out of? I'm concerned. But I'm already there. My cleaning is done. And I ask about tooth extraction (wisdom teeth). I know for a fact that my insurance fully covers it. But apparently there is still a fee. How? I question this. There is no answer. Cut to 2 days later and I receive and email from the dental practice saying they " I do not believe Greenpoint Pediatric Dentistry can meet your healthcare expectations". HUH. Wonder why. My teeth are in great shape. No cavities. Just wanted to ask about gettin rid of my wisdom teeth. In short, was no magic experience being here. Come here at your own risk. read more

First of all, this is the only place that takes healthfirst out of all the practices I called. I didn't need to pay anything out of pocket. I had a cleaning, fillings, and wisdom teeth removal done on three separate occasions. The first two were done by a guy with a beard (I'm so sorry). During the cleaning, he verbally analyzed my teeth and was informative about how to take better care of them. I've only had fillings done twice before at other practices, and this is by far the best as I could barely feel a difference with my invisalign trays on. The wisdom teeth removal was done under local anesthesia by Dr. John. It was nerve wracking but Dr. John and the assistants were very friendly and reassuring. There was a little pinch when he injected the anesthesia, and a lot of pressure and some audible crunching during the extraction (4 of them!), but it was overall painless. The only thing I would suggest is to bring a lot of tissue so you could blot the blood dripping down your chin on the way home. I only needed 1 dose of motrin and there was no pain or visible swelling by the second day. read more

I do not give a zero star because is not possible and i completely need to leave this review. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CHILD THEY WILL MAKE YOU WITHOUT A CHOICE HAVE THE CHILD GASED AND PAY $95 OT THEY WILL DENY YOUR CHILD SERVICE. With coronavirus going on and having changed my appointment 3 times and me not working the first thing I hear coming in the door is I have to pay or leave. This us unacceptable!! My child already had one filling, cried because he was being held down and then came out laughing and skipping in the street, he was fine! He is a 5 year old going in for something unknown and being held down of course he will cry. It was not traumatic at all, this is supposed to be a Pediatric center , this doctor needs to be able to handle a kid cry and if you don't get out of this business . This was one of the most upsetting experiences I've ever had as a mother. I wish I had trusted my gut and the reviews and not agreed to the partial sedation. My son used to see a dentist at Bite Size whom I trusted and felt was a kind and competent dentist. When Bite Size stopped taking our insurance, Greenpoint Pediatric was the only place that would. During our first visit, after a wait of over an hour, they insisted that we needed to pay $100.00 to freeze a cavity that the dentist at Bite Size had been keeping an eye on. When I brought him back 6 months later, (in August of 2020, )they said that he now needed 2 fillings and suggested partial sedation. I felt uncomfortable with the explanation that he would be resisting and crying because he would be separated from me and restrained by a group of strangers but then wouldn't remember it because of the drugs they would give him. I asked several times if I they could just give him nitrous and local anesthesia as that is what his friends have had at Bite Size. They finally agreed to this over the phone but when we came in they said that they had looked at his x-rays again and seen another cavity so now he had 3 and they were too deep to freeze. They said that our choices were now to do 3 separate visits with nitrous at a cost of $100.00 per visit or to do one time with sedation for $200.00 and get all 3 done at once. We had already paid for the nitrous and they emphasized that it would be easier on my child to do the sedation so we agreed to do the sedation. Dr. Hansford wasn't there that day so we made an appointment. When we arrived at the appointment today, Dr. Hansford insisted that we pay for 2 additional medications bringing the total up to $500.00 that I was now paying out of pocket for 3 fillings. He was not understanding and became offended that I had not planned to pay for the additional drugs. After I helped them strap my son down, I was made to wait in the waiting room while my son screamed for me and cried. The procedure took over an hour, not the 30-45 minutes they said. Half way through they came out and told me that my son needed crowns on 2 of the teeth because the cavities were so deep. This would add an additional $132.00 for for medicine to coat the teeth that (surprise surprise) was not covered by insurance. When I was finally brought back, my sons cheeks and mouth were extremely swollen and he was asleep. Apparently he had been awake thrashing and screaming for the whole procedure and had fallen asleep once the torture ended. When I asked whether they had done 2 crowns and one filling they told me they had done 2 crowns and 5 fillings! When I protested that they hadn't told me they were doing 4 additional fillings Dr. Hansford said that they had. This was absolutely not true. I had to carry him to the car asleep and he did not wake up for over 3 hours. I will never take him back here. The $632.00 I spent for this awful experience would have been much better spent getting a second opinion and paying out of pocket at a place I trusted. read more

Good thing he's a dentist in New York : ) Seriously proud of this guy: I sat around his office today (Greenpoint Pediatric Dentistry is OPEN.ON.THE.WEEKENDS!) Everyone was smiling and laughing. He and Dr. Jones had some of their general anesthesia patients in for follow ups and I could tell the parents and kids were so happy and relieved. Ever since 2020 I have been taking my son to two different dentists and calling others that didn't take his insurance. First dentist that actually saw him during the pandemic could not extract a tooth that was damaged due to a cavity. He gave me a couple of numbers to call and none took my son's insurance. Ok I let time go by and kids got new insurance under their dad so took all three to a new dentist but AGAIN, my son would not let dentist do anything to him. The dentist tried on two different occasions but he told me to take him to a different dentist and gave me LIJ Hospital number but they did not take his insurance and they basically told me they were going to double check and never got back to me. My son woke up one night crying in pain because of this tooth and I decided to Google his insurance again and go through the list of dentists and I saw a PDF posted with all dentists in the metro area. I checked for the pediatric dentists (pedodontists) and saw Greenpoint Pediatric Dentist in Brooklyn. I live in Queens and it was kinda far from home but I didn't care because I just wanted to end my son's pain. I wrote an email that same night he was crying around 11pm and they replied to me the next business day and after a few back and forth emails my son was all set for his appointment. The emails were very detailed and explained the whole procedure and costs to me. I started reading Yelp reviews that were not great and hesitated to take my son to this place. I decided to ignore the reviews and hope for the best and I'm very glad that I took my son to this place! Some of the bad reviews mentioned the fact that Doctor insisted on sedating kids but they need to understand that some kids (like my son) are very nervous and anxious and they will fight the dentist and this poses a risk to both the child AND the dentist. My son fought the other two dentists and it wasn't pretty. This is dangerous and unsafe. If your kid is like my son (anxious, nervous, fidgety, petrified of these type of procedures) THEN doctors like John Hansford are truly a blessing! I am glad he became an anesthesiologist to help these kids that are difficult to deal with due to their anxious/nervous nature. My son doesn't remember anything at all and now his teeth are finally clean and fixed. He even told me he wanted to go back to the dentist! Thank you Dr Hansford for making this dentist appointment a POSITIVE one! To parents: Again, if your kid is like mine (crying hysterically while dentist trying to work on their teeth, puts up a fight, can't sit still, etc) then Dr Hansford is where you need to take your child. Is it expensive? Well we are talking about dentistry after all and before you agree to anything or sign papers, they make you aware of every single out of pocket expenses you will incur so no surprises (unless you didn't read throughly) Thanks again to all the staff as they were ALL very friendly! The good: making an appointment was easy, convenient and straightforward. The bad: 1. Wait time: Our appointment was at 5:30pm and we weren't put in a room until 6:30p. We waited additional 15-20 min in the room...with a 2 years old this was really inconvenient. 2. The facility: a. the exam room we were put in was a shared room with another child waiting to be seen (we were separated by a thin partition) this was weird because the other family was right next to us, watching my son be examined. B. The exam room also doubled as a storage closet. There were empty side tables, extra partitions and boxes stacked against the walls and behind the exam chair. 3. The staff: a. the front desk was not inviting nor friendly. They didn't even look at us when we arrived. They asked for my son's name and said have a seat. b. The dental assistant was nice and her pretty standard. C. The dentist: just awful. He came in and said what questions do you have? We told him our concerns and then he barely addressed them. It was clear that he was rushing and he was very vague/generic with his answers. He was also in a rush to brush my son's teeth for some reason. This was our son's first dental appointment (which we told him and everyone else we spoke to there) and he did NOTHING to make my son comfortable. When he first approached my son, my son of course resisted because he's not even 2 and he doesn't know the dentist! And the instead of trying to engage him or induce himself or anything else he simply told my husband "just hold his arms down, we'll do this fast so he'll only have to cry and yell for a little bit." Seriously? This guy works specifically with children and that's how you handle the situation? The short of the long is that we will not be returning. And I don't recommend this place. read more

Do yourself a favor and please, please do not take your kids there. Dr Hansford is very cold, he doesn't care about helping your kid he just cares about your money. Very rude ,lazy, not organize,old dentist office thats looks dirty. Their receptionist Lizzy not helpful at all. She has a really big attitude towards everyone.They don't even call you to confirm the appointment. Very bad experience here and they immediately wanted to give my daughter general anesthesia to perform a root canal. Also said she needed more work doing than she actually did and went for a second opinion to confirm this. I didn't find this dental practice friendly at all ( didn't have John Hansford and got his associate BUT did speak to Hansford too) and got a really weird vibe from everyone there. The reception staff are also very unorganized and i declined any treatment there as seemed untrustworthy. Had read all the reviews here and was really disappointed read more

I've seen Dr John Hansford a handful of times and have always had a pleasant experience. Even though it's listed as a Pediatric, they take in adults as well. Friendly staff, always making sure I'm as comfortable as possible. My fillings were also super quick, done before you know it. Would recommend to friends! read more

I would agree with one of the feedbacks posted below. They do suggest unnecessary general anesthesia for even drilling and fixing cavities. We stopped going there. They were very good in the beginning but after a few visits when I started questioning about the excessive anesthesia I think they got offended by it and things went south after that. I gave this place three stars because it was clean and the doctor was very pleasant. I did feel it could have been more kid friendly as far as equipment and decor but hey whatever. I wasnt staying the weekend. I arrived on a sunday with my 4 toddlers. 4 and under in age range. The receptionist could have been a little kinder. I mean this is... a dentist visit. Dr. Hansford is amazing!! I brought my niece here for some dental work. She is NOT an easy patient - trust me!! Him and Dr. Jones were so professional. They were able to put her to sleep safely and have all her dental work done in one visit. Such a better experience than risking horrible dental memories and lifelong phobias. All the dental work has stayed, my niece is out of pain, and everything was done beyond safely and efficiently. 5 stars!! If you have little ones who need dental work bring them here - they are in good hands of well trained professionals. I recommend them to every parent I know! read more

Worst experience at a dentist in my life. Place looks like a dump/no TV's or anything kid friendly. But since he seems to want all patients sedated or completely asleep I guess surroundings do not matter. Dentist is obnoxious and arrogant, I have never been spoken to like this before. Dentist stopped in the middle of the filling and said my child needs to be sedated or leave. So we left. There was no trying to calm my child or talk through the procedure. And then the dentist told me he became an anesthesiologist so he doesn't have to deal with kids moving, crying or being difficult. Best thing I did was take my child to a new dentist who was caring, patient and talked through the procedure. (There are risks involved with sedation) If you want your child sedated this is the place to go. read more

Dr. Hansford and Dr. Jones did such a good job explaining the whole process, what to expect, addressed any reservations I had about general anesthesia and put my fears at ease. Dr. Hansford and Dr. Jones are both very knowledgeable at what they do. However, what makes me refer this place to friends is how well they treat their patients. I asked what seemed like a million questions and they took the time to explain the procedures and were very reassuring. I brought my niece here and she was very scared at first but they eased her anxiety and everything went smoothly. It's nice to have everything done at once instead of going to a regular dentist that would take four or five visits just to finish all the work. I didn't want my niece to be scared of the dentist and having this as her first experience has made her actually excited to see her dentist next time. I had my child see this dentist for about 2 years. We had gone to him based on their outstanding reviews. My son had cavities that needed to be taken care of and had gotten crowns on the teeth. He had seen a different dentist every time he went to this office. There was a female dentist who looked like she was in her mid 20s. Probably straight out of dental school. She didn't do a good job the first time and my child's crown came off, we had to go 2 more times. A total of 4 visits for the crown. And then we saw another young dentist in his mid to late 20s another time. They took xrays, but it didn't come out well. So they said, don't worry about it. Just get it done when you see another dentist. If you're not going to do the xrays properly, why expose my child to it or do it properly again. But the dentist was probably tired and wanted to go home. Obviously they don't have much work experience straight from school. I overlooked it due to their reviews being awesome. Never again will I step into their office. My child had tooth pain for a year. The new dentist that we went to said they did a terrible job with the crown, filling every where. Didn't clean cavities enough, cavity built up under the crown. Stay away! read more

A few weeks ago my 3 year old daughter took a big fall and suffered severe dental trauma. One tooth was knocked out during impact against a metal shelf and three more were uprooted and pushed back into the middle of her mouth exposing the roots and leaving her unable to close her mouth, speak or swallow. Terrified by the amount of blood pouring out of her little mouth, we rushed her to the hospital to have her examined. An oral surgeon was brought in and casually told her that he would try and fit her in on Monday...the accident was on a Friday. He offered to take her teeth out then on the spot, but could only give her numbing gel. My child was terrified of anyone touching her teeth and after finding out that they weren't an aspiration risk and the pain meds set in we couldn't see allowing someone to put her in more unnecessary pain. We decided she needed to be put to sleep and the surgeon agreed. We learned waitlists for dental patients to get into operating rooms average about 6 months! The oral surgeon pulled some strings, but the earliest available slot was Monday. I couldn't comprehend how he could send her away with nothing, but a tentative surgery date three days away and some pain meds. I guess hospitals are big systems with a lot of other surgeries, and we didn't rank as a high priority. That night she barley slept, she was drooling pools of blood and was in such pain but refused to eat or drink anything. We began to make phone calls to every oral surgeon and pediatric dentist in the NY Metropolitan area. We ran into a lot of dead ends, but refused to give up. It was nearly impossible to find a practice that was open on a Saturday, and was able to safely put her to sleep for the procedure. In doing research, we came across a lot of scary information about how most dentists doing sedation have inappropriate training, or practice operator-anesthetist (where the one who anesthetizes you also does your surgery) but the segments aren't differentiating between specialties i.e. they are including dental anesthesiologists who have a 2 year anesthesiology residency in with pediatric dentists who have a month of anesthesiology, oral surgeons who have 6 months of anesthesia, and general dentists who have NO anesthesia training, but can get certified in a week long course. Crazy!!!! How can we trust someone with only a week long course with our children?? Finding a dentist to do the procedure quickly was a priority, but getting it done by someone who was actually qualified now presented an entirely new obstacle. The next morning we received a phone call back from Brooklyn pediatric dentist, Dr. John Hansford. After speaking with him we learned that he is one of the only dentists in the world who is board certified and dual specialized in both pediatric dentistry and dental anesthesiology. Not only was he super qualified and willing to stay after hours that same day to remove her teeth, but his partner, Dr. Jody Jones (who just happens to be an Ivy League physician anesthesiologist) was willing to stay, too. We felt like we won the lottery. After the tears of joy and celebrating stopped, we prepped our little girl for her surgery and brought her in (she couldn't eat because of the trauma so she was good for the "no food or drinks 8 hours prior to surgery" rule). Drs. Hansford and Jones spoke to us for a few minutes, and were incredibly kind and playful with my daughter. They brought out a stuffed animal for her to hold and allowed her to hold and try on the mask that would be used to put her to sleep. All of this was done in the waiting room while she sat comfortably on my lap. The kindness exhibited by these men made me forget that my daughter was about to have surgery. I trusted them and so did my daughter. I carried my little girl to the back room and sat her down on the table and within a few minutes she was fast asleep from the anesthesia. As soon as the procedure was over and I was able to come in the room I was reassured that everything went smoothly and that my daughter would be a-ok, minus her four front teeth! When it was time for us to head home, both doctors were patient with our many questions and made sure we were informed and comfortable in how to care for our daughter when we got her home. Typically, when you leave the doctor's office after a procedure you can assume that you won't hear from them again unless you reach out and need something. That wasn't the case with Drs. Hansford and Jones. They called that evening and emailed the next day. Simply recommending this practice doesn't seem to be enough as we are so grateful for their help and kindness. If you're looking for a pediatric dentist and/or an anesthesiologist for your little ones I don't think you'll find better than doctors Hansford and Jones at Greenpoint Pediatric Dentistry! This dentist doesn't even deserve 1 Star. My son is 16 years old first time seeing this Dentist, first time we went for Cleaning we had a woman. Second time his father took him he had what I would call a dentist assistant who injected him with entirely too much Novocain because he wasn't injecting the right tooth. Third time we had the owner ( who by the way has NO PERSONALITY) I didn't even know who he was until i said (hi there I'm mom and who are you?!!) 4th time we had the owner again, unbelievable, he entered the room and said nothing to either my son or I. There had to be at least 4 people coming in and out of the room while I sat next my son. Let's not talk about while we waited an hour for our appointment we witnessed at least two children under the age of 7 get wheeled out of the office because they were sedated and basically dropped off at the door for their parent to pick up their child's limp body. I didn't want to make a review l, but hopefully if anyone sees this Please turn away & see another dentist. They will charge you for everything and have no sympathy if you don't have the money for it. Especially in the middle of procedure and sedated they would ask for more saying it's "necessary " . I took my son here because they said they take his insurance so why I left out of there 1200.00 broke. I had to pay for partial sedation $600. , 2 pain medication and 1 anti inflammatory which cost me all together $500. He mention the 3 medication after my son was already sedated. I looked at him like no way I can't afford this and he gave me a look like if I don't pay then they cannot continue. He told me come back next time. I said I can't just take him like this . And he told me " I'm going to use the bathroom and when I come out you let us know how to proceed " I had no choice but to pay. Then they asked me for additional $100. for 4 fillings My stomach turn I was so uncomfortable. I felt I was getting scammed. I can't believe I went through this with my son. They take advantage of people I wouldn't recommend anyone to take their child here. read more
