Last week, I finally stopped in at Greenwich Locksmiths to ask if they could perhaps maybe maybe make a copy of a door key for me. We had been to at least 15 other locksmiths over the past few years desperately trying to find a place that had the blanks for our lock. Mr. Mortillaro took one look at our key and said sure he had it. 5 minutes later, I walked away from his amazingly beautiful little shop with two new keys s it in my hand. Perhaps if it useful to add that when I got home, I immediately tried them in our door and voila, they worked perfectly. Good peoples here at this shop. It's a very cute little place, and very convenient to get to. I had two keys made and an RFID tag copied. All of that took less than 5 minutes and cost around $50 total. The RFID tag was most of that cost, and I believe the price was reasonable. Used this company for years. They make great keys. The father is a gentleman. The son, who seems to run the business now, is arrogant, explains nothing, complains if you ask him any questions. Because of course he is doing you a favor and you should kiss his feet while he overcharges you. $250 for the visit and over $400 dollars for a simple lock! crazy! Greenwich Locksmiths is amazing! I needed to replace a broken spindle and had called the original locksmith, who had installed the lock on my front door. After they tried charging me a ridiculous amount, I went online and found Greenwich Locksmiths. I gave them a quick call looking for a replacement part, and they told me to bring the broken part and stop by their store. I gave them the broken pieces, and they came back about 15 minutes later, telling me they had fixed it! I didn't have to order a new one or wait a week for the part to come in. Greenwich Locksmith's really went out of their way to help me in a pinch! I had to make an RFID copy at 6:30-- 30 minutes after they closed and they told me they'd wait around for me. I needed a locksmith to make me a key to a European lock that uses a skeleton key, the old fashioned key that is a long rod with a flat trimmed end which flips the tumbler in the lock. It's not a key that is quickly duplicated using standard blanks. This key had to be reverse engineered from the lock assembly. Sounds like something any locksmith could do but it turns out very few actually can do. I originally took my lock to a local locksmith who had it for 4 months but never delivered a key. After months of searches and many phone calls I finally contacted Greenwich Locksmiths and they were responsive and quoted a reasonable price and promised a very fast turnaround. I shipped them my lock, it took a couple of days and received a phone call the next day asking for credit card to pay gorgeous the work as it was ready to ship. It arrived yesterday 6 days from the day I shipped it to them and I now have a key to my lock. It was a pleasure doing business with Greenwich Locksmiths and I highly recommend them. read more

I came across this place on Yelp and decided to get my key fob copied here because of all the great reviews online, I wasn't disappointed! The guys are extremely friendly and welcoming and the shop is like a beautiful enclave of times gone by. They were able to copy my apartment key fob in under 5 minutes (two copies!) and kept me amused with conversation and laughs while I waited. Fobs work perfectly and I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to have a key cut, or just to peek your head in and look at all the beautiful antique keys adorning the walls. A little business in a fabled tiny location, with real locksmithing, right? A valiant holdout against big development and the go-to for local business... Reviews seem great. Right? Nope. I would not go back. They got the job done... eventually... but not without conflicts, communications problems (especially with the son, and between the father and son-- as far as I can tell, this is a two-person operation), bordering on rudeness. I do not doubt their honesty but there are anger management issues... (see some of the one star reviews), and because they have access to your locks and your address, you feel really helpless in complaining or anything. It is too bad. I like the small business vibe, but something has gone south with this business and these people. They may be ok for one-offs - you need keys done ONCE or have an emergency service. But once anything involves timing, scheduling, ongoing customer service, etc it is very disappointing. They simply cannot cope with customer service problems, or manage civil communications, or anything in fact that done not suit theit way of doing things. There is only so much anyone should have to put up with in the name of quirky local business. read more

Like to shop local but this guy must be paid by Jeff Bezos himself to promote shopping on Amazon and killing doing any business locally. The insecurity of the owner is quite sad. I have been using different locksmiths for the past 50 years and I have to say that the Greenwich Locksmiths is the BEST locksmith company I ever used in my life! They are extremely HONEST people! For the past month, I had several lock issues at my apartment in West Village. Every time I went there to ask Phil (owner) a question or make keys copied, he was so helpful and always prevented me from spending unnecessary money on my door locks. His rates were much lower than other locksmiths in the area. Last week, one of keys got stuck in my deadbolt lock. The key would not come out and not turn the lock cylinder. I took the lock off the door and went to the Greenwich Locksmiths to figure out the problem. Owner Phil checked and told me that there was nothing wrong with the lock and spayed some WD-40 on the lock for me without any charge. When I installed the lock back on the door, the same thing happened again. Thinking that there was something wrong with my locking mechanism, I went back to the locksmith again. He fixed it again without any charge. When I went back for the third time because I was getting frustrated and I wanted to get a new replacement deadbolt lock, which would have cost me over $100+ dollars, owner Phil still talked me out of buying a new lock. He showed me how to install the lock properly, again without charging me anything. When I followed his instructions, my deadbolt lock worked perfectly. I have used various different locksmith for the past 50 years and I never met such an HONEST locksmith like Phil before. When I went back for the third time, he could have easy sold me a new lock and make a quick profit but he strongly discourage me from wasting my money. I wanted to thank Phil and his company for being so HONEST and helpful. It is very rare to find an honest people like Phil in Manhattan these days! Came here and got a Medeco key duplicated for $20. Expensive for a key, yes, but they're one of the few locksmiths with the special equipment necessary equipment to produce Medeco keys, so the price is fair. Unfortunately, the new key did not work, and upon closer inspection, they had miscut one of the grooves by about a millimeter. I returned and they made a new key and tried to fix the copy I had to the best of their ability. As it turns out, both copies now work, so I ended up getting two keys for the price of one. Still, I can't give them too high marks as key duplication is not something you should be messing up. read more

I have encountered several locksmiths that operate with questionable ethical standards in New York City. They largely prey on desperate people who manage to lock themselves out of their apartments and will pay just about anything for an "emergency" locksmith to get them out of a jam. In fact there are probably a dozen of them called "AAA Locksmith" or even "AA Locksmith" hoping to be the first entry in the phone book (back in the day when anyone actually used a phone book). Greenwich Locksmith is an entirely different kind of operation. I have dealt with them on a couple of occasions now, and I have come away quite impressed. Phil, who I presume is the owner as he always answers the phone, is an honest, straightforward guy. I called him last week because the lock on our building's front door wasn't holding. I explained that I didn't really want to pay much to fix it because we have brand new doors on order that will be arriving in a few weeks, and the new doors come with new locks. So, whatever I paid to fix the near-term problem would be money wasted in the long run. He said not to worry and he offered to send a guy to my building the next day, free of charge, to assess the situation. He said if I didn't want to pay for any work, that was fine, but he would at least outline a few options. In fact he did, and ultimately recommended that we replace the broken electric strike with a new one. Rather than try to sell us a $600 electric strike that would last many years, he suggested we by a cheapo version that would last several months (until the new doors arrived) but not necessarily much beyond that. Including installation, he priced the whole job at $250, which seemed perfectly reasonable to me. Great, honest work from a local locksmith is worth 5 stars every day of the week. My safe was steel and digital operated with a battery from the inside. The battery ran out and I was locked out of my safe. I purchased it at the Plaza Hotel when they were converting to condo's and the safe maker was unwilling to assist me. I had a horrible experience with a crook of a safe opener I found in a tv ad. With research I happened upon Greenwich Locksmiths through the Better Business Bureau website. They were accommodating with my schedule. I had to change the date of my appointment last minute. They called the morning they were on the way, I think my safe opener was Charles, he was quite professional. He explained that my safe would be unuseable once he opened it, which i knew, because the bogus crook who had come to do the job before him beat it to death. Charles was a pro. He opened the safe like the guys you see on tv. He drilled and listened, drilled again and click, click and we were open. It took about 15-20 minutes. He didn't even charge the full $125 that was quoted to me over the phone and he wouldn't accept a tip. I will use them for any and all locksmith jobs I have in the future. read more
