Greenwood Hardware is pretty darn amazing. They store is dog-friendly, and the staff all seem to love dogs. Usually, one or two employees will stop and chat with me while they give my dog treats or pet him. They really know how to make me feel right at home. The staff know their stuff. I've never seen this level of competence in a Home Depot or Lowe's. I had a problem with a missing roller for my closet door, and the employee not only led me to the aisle to find the parts I needed, but also found them for me and explained (slowly and clearly) exactly how to make my closet work the way I want it to. I went home, and I did exactly what they said and (voila!) it worked perfectly. The selection of hardware and tools is really great for such a tiny place. Need a hand saw to cut metal? They have 6 kinds. Need a drill bit? I dare you to choose just one. Also, I know this is a little off the wall, but this is the ONLY place in Seattle where I've seen a foaming soap dispenser. I've been searching other stores (Target, World Market, etc) high and low for one of these. I figured that since these stores have entire DEPARTMENTS devoted to bath gadgets, they might have what I was looking for. I was about to go my typical route and just buy it online; however, I found one the first day I walked into GTV- and it's even in brushed stainless. Tres bien. read more

About a week and a half after multiple calls and them scratching their heads because it didn't show up and didn't know where it was. I finally got an email saying my order was canceled. I use Greenwood Ace Hardware for all my plumbing needs at three locations - two rentals and my home. Recently they completed the third job replacing a hot water heater, this time a "low-boy" that involved some cabinetry removal and replacement. I can definitely say that Greenwood Ace is friendly, accommodating, creative (a quality that is really necessary to work with hot water heaters) and helpful. The installer that performed the most recent job actually made suggestions that saved me money. The installation was certainly on the more challenging end and I never sensed frustration or irritation that I was watching over his shoulder and at times helping out. In fact, he not only welcomed my involvement but actually suggested that I made saws-all cuts to remove cabinetry since he didn't want to be responsible for a poor cut (and I didn't want him to be, either). The job took slightly longer than normal but I didn't get charged extra. He put the effort in to make sure that residue was cleaned up on the nice tile floor as well as any other mess. I will definitely continue to use Greenwood Ace Hardware to do any hot water heater work I need done. read more

I went in to purchase paint, the guy couldn't get the color figured out with the base paint I wanted to ended up selecting a more expensive base than I wanted without asking. Since I don't like a hassle and just wanted to get painting (because I was off work that day) I purchased a $41.00 can of paint (when I expected to pay half the price). The color is good though. The store itself appears to be well stocked and services other than paint are done quickly. It was just annoying to stand around for a half hour. read more

It's a hardware store, not a real plumbing company, so don't hire them for anything beyond the simplest of water heater replacements. They sent a tech, John, to replace my water heater, which has a recirculating pump. When I made the request I mentioned the pump and I also sent in photos of the water heater that included the pump. John, who later admitted not knowing about pumps, did the job anyway. A few hours later I called and told him that the water wasn't recirculating. He told me to reset the timer on the pump, and that I should call the plumber who installed it. However it was working perfectly before he replaced the water heater. I disabled the timer and the pump was still not working. Eventually I decided to try to "prime" the pump by running water through it. That solved the problem. I left John a voicemail telling him what I did. He called back and said that he had run water through the pump, but obviously he hadn't done it properly. I called the office and they defended John, saying that he wasn't aware there was a pump before he started the job. They didn't seem to buy my argument that when he saw it he should have stopped and gotten someone familiar with them to finish the job. I'm giving them two stars instead of one because John arrived on time, only took 2 hours, and the rest of the installation was fine. read more

Greenwood Hardware replaced the hot water heater last year in my turn-of-the-century condo. Have been going through the refinance process, and the lender required the heater to have earthquake straps. I contacted the handyman who works in our building, scheduled an appointment. He never showed up, delaying funding of my loan. I called Greenwood on Thursday afternoon, and they were here early on Monday morning. Professional and efficient. I've been living on Phinney Ridge and shopping at Greenwood TruValue for 27 years. Always loved the place, liked shopping there instead of the big boxes even though it costs a bit more. That ended today. I don't know, maybe they're under new management or something. A few weeks ago I took in a screen door, wanted it re-screened. "Well we can't do it today!" Seemed a weird response, I certainly didn't expect same-day service, but "That's fine. No problem." Left it and they said they'd call. They called in a few days, gave me a quote. $61. "Great. Go ahead." A few days later they called to say it was ready. Went to get it, wasn't pleased with the job. They used black splining on the bottom, as it was before, but gray on the top, which looked seriously ugly on this door, especially since it didn't match the bottom. (It's my front door screen.) Asked them to re-do it. Guy calls a few days later, says it's done; I'm not sure if it's been redone, so I ask. "It's ready for pickup." I ask again: "Has it been redone?" "It's ready for pickup." So I ask *again.* "Yeah, it's black now." Definite attitude voice. Whoa. "Okay, thanks, I'll come and get it." "Click." Whatever. I go get it. He'd just painted the gray spline black. Again, whatever. Looked okay. Then within six hours the screen starts falling out. Normal use, people going in and out the door. The spline they used was way too small, just didn't hold. (The previous screening--which used rope instead of plastic spline--had lasted six years. Four others just like it are in great shape. I only took it in cause a dog had torn it with its claw.) So I took it back today, told them it was falling apart. (Which was kind of obvious, of course.) Immediate reply: "So you want us to do it *again*?" Whoa again. Obviously the employees had been discussing my outrageous demands. Two employees got involved, arguing that--I guess--it was the door's fault. "I have no idea how to do that," says one guy. So I'm like, "Okay fine, why didn't the screener just tell me that up-front when he called, I would have found another solution." They refunded me the $61 cause they couldn't or didn't want to figure out how to solve it. I'm leaving, and say "You know in 27 years this is the first time I've gotten any attitude here." "Yeah well you've been showing a lot of attitude yourself." (This from a 20-something.) If telling them that you're not satisfied with an obviously unsatisfactory job is their idea of a customer showing "attitude," they're definitely not the store they used to be. Sad, that. I've run multiple small businesses. I know it's a challenge to manage employees so they interact with customers appropriately (firm when necessary, generous when possible, always polite). Whoever's managing these employees isn't succeeding. read more

Love love this place!!! It is filled with great hardware and gorgeous household items - pottery, rugs, and more!! It's organized, neat,clean and with a huge curated selection - while also not feeling corporate. It has a neighborhood vibe. The sales staff is VERY nice and helpful. This is not a straight white male only kind of hardware store - ALL different people - men and women - work here and are SO helpful!!!! One very nice guy helped me on more than two occasions and others were all smiles and super friendly - the same staff member helped me figure out how to hang a mirror and how to solve another thing.,This is the best hardware store I have ever been to. read more

I've been shopping here for decades and it is my favorite hardware store. I was dismayed when I stopped by recently to see that only some of the staff were wearing masks and there was no plexiglass shield in front of the check stand. Nor were there any marks on the floor to indicate social distancing. Please take proper precautions to keep your staff and shoppers safe! read more

Tried to pick up one quick item before closing on Memorial Day weekend and rushed to the store only to find that they had closed a few minutes early. A few employees were standing by the door and easily could have let me in, but they clearly didn't care. Usually I think that True Value has good service, but it definitely did not today. read more

Customer service with these guys is *outstanding*. Glad I purchased our two hot water heaters from Greenwood TrueValue Hardware not quite two years ago. This morning, one if the hot water heaters (Bradford White Defender series) stopped putting out cold water. The pilot light somehow went out and I didn't know what I was doing trying to re-light it. So I gave Greenwood Hardware a call, they came out that same day , re-lit the pilot light and showed me what to do and didn't charge me for the house call. The staff here are great. They don't have a huge selection but if you need general hardware needs they will work for you. Their prices are higher then the giant stores but if you live nearby it is better then driving all the way across town. I always feel happy when I leave this store but for some reason I am irritated after leaving Home Depot. Amazing what a friendly smile can do. read more

Seattle has great hardware stores and this place is a great example. Unlike the big biz stores, they cater to the needs of the neighborhood. This means a large assortment of Eco-friendly products such pest and weed sprays and push mowers (that work great!) they also have a nice assortment of kitchen supplies and a reasonably well stocked fastener aisle (though not nearly as vast as Stone Way!) read more

Recently my business has moved across the street from Greenwood Hardware, which has made me appreciate them more than ever! I've lived in the neighborhood since '91 and have received the problem solving assistance of Marty on too many occasions to count! This morning though started my day off SOOOO right, I just knew I needed to glow about it somewhere. I should have asked the woman's name who helped me because she solved my problem so quickly and effortlessly and gave me a solution I would never have been able to come up with on my own. Didn't cost much and NOW my business has some beautiful new signs hanging in the windows. As I said to her when I was leaving, "Things are always so good at Greenwood Hardware!"
