Ask the Community - Greetings From Martha's Vineyard Tours

Do you recommend Greetings from M.V tours? My husband is really hard of hearing. Would he be able to hear and understand Craig?

Hi Joan! This is Craig your question comes to me. I do recommend me! As well as I do have a voice that can boom! Call me if you'd like a sampling. Your husband can sit next tome as well! Sounds like my dad whom refused to wear his hearing aids, I…

You walk in and my jaw dropped looking at the paintings on the stairs. Like they painted everything. Each room is more and more magnificent and I would argue I find this more breathtaking than the Elms. It's the details in the rooms for me, not the size of it. I didn't go on a guided tour but at some point would love to see more of the rooms, there were a certain number available to us yesterday. I think this actually just became my favorite to visit, honestly. I know a lot of people make comments about how dark it is, buuuut have you heard of how you need that for preservation purposes? I also have an eye condition so for me, it was actually welcome to walk through and not feel like I'm being blinded. The soft lighting I found to be wonderful, personally.

I hate to say it, but after you've seen so many of these, they all blur together. I will say, I…read moreLOVED how dark this one was. So moody and so bold. It is an interesting one and I enjoyed the woodwork. Walnut and oak. Such beautiful molding. There was a Turkish room that stands out in my mind. Turkish from that era basically referred to anything middle eastern, Eastern European, or even Asian I think. I wish I remembered more about the family that lived here. I'll have to look and get back to you.

The house is a blend of English Queen Anne, New England colonial and Oriental design. The name Shingle Style is due to the white cedar shingles that cover the exterior. The firm McKim, Mead and White influenced the work of Fran Lloyd Wright. The open floor plan is perfect for the current use to display art exhibits. This current exhibition, Pictus Porrectus, shows contemporary art based on classic paintings. Parking is available on site. No furniture is displayed in this historic Newport Mansion. A very unique property, but not as elaborate as the other Gilded Newport Mansions.

It was an architectural tour and it didn't contain most of the furnishings as most of them were sold off years ago. They chose not to buy period pieces though instead focused on many of the interesting features. For one, the outside roof is covered in wood shingles in all types of interesting designs which is why the style of the house is classified as shingle style architecture and is one of the few in the country. Because the owners traveled quite extensively, they incorporated many design details from France, Japan and China mostly, but also from other areas of the world. One that that surprised me is that the main floor has a fairly open floor plan with wasn't standard for that time period. This concept was borrowed from Japan. I had also not seen pocket windows before - they disappear into the walls completely to bring in lots of fresh air! Much of the wallpaper was custom designed for them. The designer also was very creative. He framed bed warmers and used them as a feature in the dining room. I now realize that if all the period pieces were in the house, it would almost overshadow all the design features of the house itself.

VRBO is a joke. Everything is being handled through a 3rd party. Our property had a very scary…read moreelectrial issue. We were instructed over the phone by the host on how to trip one breaker so the outside switch would stop smoking and popping while keeping the fridge inside on because they were all tied in together. It took them 2 days to get an electrician out. He showed up at 5pm the day before we were leaving, just as we were about to walk out for dinner. We had to wait an hour for him to leave. Just for him to tell us that the wiring was done wrong and he wasn't comfortable fixing it so he just left it tripped. We've been waiting for weeks for the owner to respond to a refund request. All they keep telling us is that the owner is out of town. Mind you, they have not stopped renting this place out. People rented it the same night we left. We've always used air bnb and only tried this because, to be honest, it was a little bit less expensive. Never again. We'll pay the extra. The app does a terrible job if keeping you know when the 3rd party responds to your messages. I get the email before the app notification. Most times, it notifies me the next day that the company replied to my message. The company just regurgitates what I've already said a hundred times and then says "thank you for your patience while we handle this". But nothing is being handled! Terrible customer service. Update: After weeks of frustration I decided to contact VRBO through facebook. And the response was so good, I'm changing my rating from a 1 star to a 3 star. Amy personally handled my case and did in one day what I've been trying to do for weeks. The only reason I'm not giving higher stars is because this took far too long. I had to spend many hours going over this with so many different people bevause of the 3rd party involvement. I would recommend using their facebook plateform if you have issues. I do wish VRBO had an option through there site or through their app that was as convenient as there facebook chat was.

Hidden Fees While…read morethe property I rented was great, the online property said it included ALL FEES. Not true. There was an unexpected additional fee added to my cc for this trip. As a Californian consumer, hidden fees are forbidden as a result of Assembly bill 537, known as the "honest pricing law" was specifically designed to target lodging rate transparency. VRBO didn't adhere to this law. This is something to consider. When I left this review via VRBO's system they wouldn't publish it. Thanks Yelp and Trust pilot for posting honest reviews.
