We dined at the Grey Ghost for a special dinner last week and it was outstanding. The service was above reproach and they carefully accommodate allergies, walk you through the menu, and provide a stellar experience. Our server, James, was phenomenal. Atmosphere is nice, decor is very cool, and the setting is intimate, but when it fills up, it is quite loud. Regarding accommodations, for our teen daughter, the chef went WELL beyond normal accommodations to modify the Steelhead Trout dish to allow her to enjoy what she called "the best fish I've ever had". He absolutely made her night. We all shared the Brussel Sprouts (w/ honey, lime, & chicken skin) and Octopus appetizers. The Brussels were heavenly and the octopus was flavorful and tender (very nicely prepared). Aside from the Steelhead entrée, my wife and son both had the Ribeye Cap w/ yaji, peanut, & kiwi. They couldn't stop raving about it. The pairing of kiwi with steak was delicious and creative! I ordered the Lobster dish and honestly, it was better than many top tier seafood restaurants I've visited. It featured tail & claw meat atop a crab cake with a citrus beurre blanc and crispy wontons. I'd go back just for this dish. For dessert, we tried the PB&J Napoleon, and found the berry sorbet to be ridiculously fresh and bursting with flavor. Portion sizes were just right. Everyone left well satiated, but not overly full. We had a reservation, and I'd highly recommend if you're thinking of going, you get one as well. It was a full house the entire time we were there, and it was only midweek.
A solid 4.5. FINALLY made it to this place after years of being on the list. Went here with a friend for a birthday meal, and it was a solid if not spectacular time. AMBIENCE - definitely a hip spot, not too dark, not too light. the hosts were very friendly and accommodating as we hit some traffic on our way in and had to switch our reservations to 40 minutes later. We ended up being placed on the "veranda" which was an enclosed space with about 4-5 tables. They had heaters, but fortunately, it was warm enough that they were not needed. SERVICE - my friend made it well known that we were there for my birthday, but I'd like to think even without the birthday drop, we would have gotten great service. Our server was friendly, attentive and made a number of recommendations to help guide our dining experience. MENU - Grey ghost has a rotating menu, with a few items that our consistently featured (I'll talk about my burger later). An interesting array of starters including brussel sprouts and coconut shrimp as well as a great variety of main entrees. I feel like there was something for all tastes at this place. They also had a good variety of cocktails and mocktails. FOOD - We started off with shrimp tempura which had a tropical salad of some sort served with it. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, and the tropical salad really complimented it very well. We also decided to try their home made Rock and Rye (their take on Faygo's marquee drink of the same name). The Rock and Rye was decent, but if you want rock and rye, nothing beats the original. For our main dishes, a number of things caught our eye. including the lamb and ribeye, but we ended up going with their burger and a side of fries and their wild boar pappardelle. I've heard Grey Ghost has one of the best burgers in Detroit, and it did not disappoint. And you know we had put an egg on it and it was rocking. I don't know what the burger sauce they put on it was, but it seemed like a much, MUCH better executed big mac. The fries were great as well. The pappardelle was good, nothing mind blowing, but a solid entree in it's own right. I was curious how the burger here compares to the one at their sister restaurant (Little Ghost) and the host said the quality of meat used in the patty is better at Grey Ghost than little ghost. Guess I'm going to have to go there as well. OVERALL - definitely worth a visit. I'd say a good spot for a first date, or some other sort of special occasion. Came in and was seated immediay for the bar, this place has a nice pirate theme . We ordered a Lemons drop and old fahioned 10/10. The bartenders were knowledgeable and super friendly. I ate prior to coming so I will next time.
TLDR: We ran into a few bumps but the staff did everything they could to reconcile and most of the food was delicious! We started with oysters (asked for raw), Brussels, beef tartare and mussels. The broth in the mussels was very good. The lime toast was unique but enjoyed. The beef tartare was delicious. Good portions too. The Brussels had great flavor and were nice and crispy. Towards the bottom, way too much honey sauce though. For entrees, I got the filet, which was a great cut. Very velvety. The lasagna-like side dish was good. Too cheesy for me but my family loved it. My husband tried the spaghetti, unique and refreshing but not sure we would get it again. My FIL got the chicken liver sliders and said they were ok. My MIL got the fish and didn't like it but my husband said it was fine. (They comped the fish after her feedback though!) Service was great but we waited 45 mins between appetizers and dinner which was excessive. The staff noticed without us saying a word and comped two dishes for us in the meantime which felt like a great compensation. They brought the radish salad and lamb meatballs, both which were very tasty.
I was truly impressed with this place. Probably the best restaurant that I've been to in a long time. From their food, to their cocktails and their warm and welcoming customer service! A group of friends and I made reservations here. We were all first timers and we had no clue what to expect, by the time we left we were all talking about the next time we should come back. Food was flavorful, cocktails were fun and tasty, and our server was the most respectful guy! He was so knowledgeable about the food. 10/10 would recommend.
Grey Ghost is a romantic Detroit date spot with elevated cocktail offerings and a rotating food menu that will send your taste buds exploring unique flavors every time! This was our first visit after hearing many great things so I was very excited to be surprised here for dinner! We had a reservation for our dinner date before seeing a show at LCA (which is only a short 5 minute walking distance), and Grey Ghost certainly delivered a meal of culinary excellence in a modern, yet simplistic atmosphere. The muted lighting gave the restaurant a relaxed, intimate setting which made the experience so much more enjoyable. Every staff member from greeting us at the door to the food runners to our wonderful server, Jenna, showed such passion and guest service. Jenna was personable, attentive, and gave helpful recommendations with the menu. We started with the brussels sprouts and mussels. It was evident in the flavors and the way the food is presented that there is a high level of attention to detail. The mussels were extremely fresh and the Thai basil cashew sauce was the perfect, savory-salty balance. The Brussels, however, blew us out of the water with the lime garlic glaze. For such a simple dish, enjoyed every crunch! Delicious! Given the special night out, we decided to splurge on the hanger steak and the filet, both medium rare and cooked perfectly. Sometimes I am reluctant to order filet due to price point and the hesitation of a small portion or having it cooked wrong- I am beyond glad I ordered their filet and I HIGHLY recommend. The generous cut was about 12oz, cooked to complete PERFECTION, and completely melted in our mouthes. The cheesy parsnip lasagna pairing was chef's kiss! While the hanger steak was less tender than the filet (hard to compare the two, really!) it was well-flavored and did not disappoint! The miso glaze that was on the hanger steak was absolute decadence, and will make you want to scrape every last bit off your plate. While the overall food and service experience is five-star, my only issue is with the dining layout. Besides a few stand-alone tables and one half-circle booth, much of the seating consists of the banquette and chair style (a bench on one side, chairs on the other). The placement of these tables felt crammed, making it difficult to get in and out of the seat without bumping or having to ask the neighboring table to scoot in. It's a slight detail, but giving guests a bit more privacy while dining and would elevate the comfort level considerably.
Grey Ghost is the type of restaurant you enjoy just being present in. I've dined at the bar, the dining room, and the veranda, and don't have a preference. The burger here is easily one of the best locally, and in general, I've had. The menu rotates frequently, but the burger is a mainstay. French fries are also a mainstay, however, the flavor of them changes every so often. The cannelloni alfredo is another delicious dish but, at the time of writing this review, is no longer on the menu. For the vibes and burger alone, Grey Ghost will always be one of my favorites. I will say, it is on the pricier side. However, the quality and experience you receive is worth it.
Our server was excellent and I really liked that he described the cocktails we ordered to make sure we'd like them/know what to expect (super helpful since I thought my drink was going to be like a margarita but he described it more as a martini). I really liked what my hubby ordered, the Dragonfly Jones (mezcal based drink) over mine (Inside Voice). My friend ordered the Greenseer- warning this drink is brown and savory (a VERY different & unusual cocktail) but with the right mindset, she really liked it after a few sips! The ambiance was nice, slightly upscale but casual and comfortable. Of course the table spacing can be a bit tight- oh well. Anyways, my friend LOVED the lamb chops- said they were probably The Best she's had! I ordered the Masa Gnocchi which was good (very filling, pork tenderloin was maybe a touch salty, some veggies would be nice to balance it), my hubby got the Crab Ravioli (not very crabby fyi) and REALLY enjoyed it. My other friend ordered the hamburger (lots of tables were ordering this!), which he said tasted great BUT could use some lettuce and tomato! (Ps I love Cilantro, but my friend does not- several dishes have cilantro on them but relatively easy to pick off;). I wish that Grey Ghost had a nice salad on the menu which would've been a perfect addition to all our meals. Overall, I enjoyed our evening!
Came here for an after event meal. The place looked nice but the ambience was thrown off by a loud and obnoxious group. We had to move tables. The food was good. Nothing exactly stood out though.
Grey Ghost is vibe. Small intimate setting which is always amazing. The Walleye was amazing! Great flavor. I was truly impressed! The staff is always great, great place for a low key date night.
One of my favorite spots in downtown Detroit to celebrate a special occasion. The atmosphere and service are great and very chic. The food is consistently good! My go to is always the burger and the Brussels sprouts. But my favorite thing about Grey Ghost are the drinks!!! Their cocktails are amazing, but their mocktails are even better. I love the I Insist, it's the best coffee based mocktails I've ever tried. Highly recommend to all my friends visiting the area. I can't wait to come back to try the Chef's Tasting
Enjoyed several courses beginning with lamb tartare that tasted so right but felt wrong (eating raw lamb). It was a unique combination of minced lamb, sriracha sauce, puffed rice, pickles and mint. Picture an ahi tuna stack but lamb instead - lovely. Next up were the baked oysters; we are normally raw oyster types but the description was hard to pass up. They indeed smelled like a coney dog and tasted JUST like a coney dog. We probably wouldn't get them again but would encourage a group to try them just cause. On to mains... red snapper and short ribs. They were both pretty amazing. I really enjoyed the snapper and jerk flavors that came along with it. A nice portion and not heavy at all, as you can imagine for a fish dish. It was a huge chunk of short rib served with rice and pineapple rice cakes; a bit heavier of a dish, and fatty but SO tasty. Amazingly, we stuffed some dessert in too that I didn't capture a pic of. Jumped on the affogato trend and tried it for the first time with their homemade gelato + espresso. The espresso was jet fuel strong and great complement to the cream; the gelato could use a bit of improvement. Second was the crema catalana which essentially was like crème brûlée with a lemon flavor, brûlée top adorned with lavender sugar cookies. It was a large portion easily split by 2 or 3. Lovely atmosphere for date night, double date or small group. Interesting alcoholic bevs if you're into them but good alternatives if not. Our server was awesome, friendly and casual.
This is a perfect date night spot with just the right ambiance, music and bartenders! Our bartenders Ashford and Val were phenomenal. They kept the service prompt and attentive. The food was amazing and was made to perfection. Thank you all for a great night out and we'll be back soon!

Best Brussel sprouts ever, the fries were crispy and tasty! My boyfriend got the hanger steak and I got the filet mignon, they were both very good and I enjoyed the salad on top of the hanger steak... the potato with my filet was very interesting looking but I gave it a try and I really enjoyed it! We didn't have reservations on a Sunday night but we were able to get bar seats! read more

I have always adored coming to Grey Ghost, and that comes with the idea that its menu changes all the time.... this time it just fell flat. The vibes inside are immaculate and the drinks are always amazing and the staff is phenomenal but this round of food, did not do it justice. There was a wonton appetizer that felt a little flavorless and an unbalanced udon dish that was loaded with acid. This isn't going to be the last time I come to Grey Ghost but definitely this menu missed for me. read more

This place was absolutely wonderful. I loved the unique cocktail menu and the food we had was so wonderful and elevated. The French fries were seasoned with a unique garden salsa flavor and served with queso. They were addicting. Loved the burger too. It does have a unique taste that was unlike any burger I have had before. Finally our server was attentive, friendly, and made our experience wonderful. This is the perfect spot for a date night in the city. read more
Although I made a reservation three weeks in advance, we were seated by the door and next to a drawer where staff frequently retrieved silverware--about 40+ times during our meal. This constant traffic invaded our personal space, and it might be worth considering moving the table or relocating the silverware. The bathrooms were moderately clean, and the staff was friendly and attentive for the most part. The food was good, with decent portion sizes, but I was surprised that no bread or small snacks were provided while waiting. I had always wanted to try this place, but after this experience, we're unlikely to return. The prices felt high for the limited menu options. read more

First time in Detroit. I've had burgers, and then I've had THE burger. I'm telling you, this is not one to pass on. A suggestion: get the egg on it. Also, if you don't typically do mayonnaise, make an exception this one time; you won't regret it. If Kristin is working, order from her. Tell her what you like, she won't stir you wrong. If Harry is working, have him make the drink. Not only does he name the drinks, he executes the making of them with perfection. I strongly recommend the Hallow Crown. I also had the pierogi. Grey Ghost is one of my absolute go-to spots in Midtown Detroit. Anytime someone asks, "Where should we go for happy hour?" or "I've got a friend visiting--any recommendations?" my answer is always Grey Ghost. It has never let me down. On my most recent visit, my wife, some friends, and I enjoyed a nice big meal. We started with the Fried Potato Salad, Steak Tartare, and Zucchini Tots--each was packed with flavor. The crispy chicken skin in the potato salad added a satisfying crunch and an incredible depth of flavor. Portion sizes were generous across the board, but the Steak Tartare stole the show. It's an absolute must-try! For mains, we split their classic burger (easily one of the top 3 in the city!) and the filet mignon. Both dishes were exceptional, with perfectly executed flavors that left us thoroughly impressed. Grey Ghost nails it every time, from the menu to the chill ambiance. If you haven't been yet, I highly recommend giving it a try--whether you're a local or just passing through, you won't regret it! read more

I loved the overall vibe and decor. We were a little bit thrown off that you could not see yourself at the bar but we ended up not waiting a super long time after all. We went across the street to have cocktails while we were waiting, which was a very pleasant experience. Our server was very helpful in explaining things to us and making recommendations since it is a very unique menu. I enjoyed everything I ate and drank, although portions are smaller. It is definitely a pricier place because I do feel like you are paying for the experience as well. The conclusion of our meal when the bill came was the only major issue I had all night. I was dining with a longtime male friend of mine who had paid for the bill. The bartender gave my friend's credit card back directly back to me, which felt very odd being that I'm female and also wasn't the one who had paid. I did kind of feel this may have been racially motivated because my friend is also African-American, but who knows. read more
Came here on a Friday night around 7pm, didn't have reservations and managed to get seats on a table top near the bar. I was happy to see they had mocktails and I recommend the lavender crème one (forgot the actual name), because it tasted like a creamy pina colada crossed with an orange Julius. We got the octopus torchon which was thinly sliced octopus on a waffle. The ginger aoli sauce really shined and we practically cleaned the plate! The roasted turnips was also very tasty and refreshing. For our mains we got scallops which I thought would come with 4 scallops from the other pics on Yelp but disappointedly only came with 3. Cooked well but I wish it had more for a sear on it. The star of the dish was the spicy njuda sauce. I'm not too tolerable to spicy but it was done just right. It had the perfect kick and made a great pairing to pure scallops. The ny strip was cooked via sous vide so it would've been hard to mess up at medium rare. It had a side of oxtail(?) hash brown? Our server James was polite and knowledgeable of the menu and gave good recommendations. It was VERY busy and we saw he had several other tables yet still checked in with us at very well timed intervals. We didn't not leave wanting. Ambience was loud and hip. Parking in this neighborhood is a nightmare. I wish they had their own lot but unless you park far away in a structure, you can park next door to the restaurant for a charge or $40!!! Those parking attendants are also swindlers. It really put a damper on our night out because they kept telling my husband to "pull up, pull up" and didn't care to see that our BMW sedan bumper was about to scrape on the parking cement block!! They should be getting the damage bill! They clearly just wanted to pack the cars close together for maximum profit. read more

I'm always googling "best burger in Detroit" and google doesn't seem to get it. Grey Ghost is by far one of the best in Detroit. I love my bar burgers but this is a smash burger from Heaven. I actually opt to not get the egg on it when offered, the first time it was a bit like a jelly consistency. Eat the burger the way it comes. It's Perfection. read more

Our bartender at rotando recommended we check out grey ghost and gg did not dissappoint. The whole space had dark sexy vibes with bustling energy all around us. The food though was the most interesting with a rotating menu every two weeks to keep things fresh! We had the everything bagel bites with smoke salmon, pheasant tacos in a waffle taco, fried potato salad, tomatillo salsa New York strip, and zucchini ricotta cake. 5 stars for the food and beverages (local craft brews in house). The main reason for 4 stars vs 5 stars was the inconsistency with the servers. While our server did their job, it didn't feel like they wanted to be there and was just going with the flow while the tables surrounding us were hyped and engaged read more

I've been to Grey Ghost about 5 times now and most of my experiences have been great! The first few times were fabulous. The ambience, the food, the service- all wonderful. The third time that I went, l our party of 4 was pretty disappointed. The service was wonderful, but we found that most of our entrees were EXTREMELY salty. This last time I went with another party of 4 for a friend's birthday dinner and our experience was great. We got the Brussels sprouts, fries, and the deep fried mushrooms. They went over really well and the drinks were also tasty. For the entrees we got 2 scallops, a chicken dish, and the pork. Seems like we've had a few over seasoned dishes but overall a good place to dine. read more

Not sure where I want to begin. Let's just say that if Grey Ghost is an example of what Detroit does and will offer for dining options then please create 50 more around the area. I travel for a loving and constantly say, I wish home had hip, creative menu dining options. Look no further than Grey Ghost. The family was attending a show at the DO, I wanted to be close to walk around. This was a perfect location, great reviews and menu. To our surprise we were sat next to a glass room where GG grinds their own grains to create the pasta. You can witness the process in its entirety. We chose to take the chefs tasting choice with pairings. We were not disappointed. From the cocktails, service, friendliness, attention, cleanliness, ambiance I can go on but ya get the point. Looking forward to visiting again. Probably the best way to review my feelings. read more
So while visiting in Detroit, we decided on a date night and we landed on Grey Ghost. I was able to make a reservation and we were seated in a very timely fashion. Looking around, this place is very beautiful. It has a bar that seems to carry anything that you would want. Our waitress was amazing. We had dietary restrictions and she was on top of them all and was able to offer items that fit both restrictions. We placed our orders and waited. While scanning the restaurant, there was a man who kept walking by our table and side-eyeing. It wasn't till later we realized that he actually worked there. He cleared our table of the dishes. It would've been nice if he had spoken. He just seemed to lurk, which made us a little uneasy. At the end of dinner, we were offered two small desserts that again, fit our restrictions and they both were delicious! It's nice to see a restaurant take pride in their craft, respect the wishes of their guests and offer to make adjustments. It was an amazing experience and I can't wait to return! read more

When Detroit's food scene first started humming there were some early restaurants that really started to make an impact and bring some shine down on the city. Then a second wave came through and and suddenly out food scene was blowing up all over the place. I always associate GG with that second wave. I've been here several.tomws now and their cocktail service is second to none. Consistently their bartenders come up with interesting and flavorful combinations that you just didn't find elsewhere. Now of course it's a different story, but at the time it was always such a great adventure trying one of their new cocktails. Foodwise, a very solid menu with wide ranging choices that I'm sure anyone can find something to choose from. While their food has always been good, it's not as eclectic or interesting as their cocktail list. Still, I have not been disappointed with anything I've ever had here. I think one of my favorite aspects of the restaurant is the aesthetics and ambience of it. It's not a large place, there's a coziness to it that reminds me of Paris for some reason. It's a strange feeling, almost deja vu or nostalgia for a place in some corner of mind that is just out of reach of memory. Come out for a lovely time, they will take good care of you. read more

We decided to go to Grey Ghost to celebrate our anniversary, and they definitely understood the assignment. It was a great evening overall. Started off with a happy anniversary from the hostess, and they left us a card signed by the team with some adorable stickers at the table. I ordered a cocktail and my husband got a mocktail, both were super yummy. I started with the radish salad which was right up my alley. I loved the entire dish. My husband got the agnolotti, which were good. For our mains, I ordered a Windfall, which complimented my dry aged NY strip perfectly. The strip was served with bone marrow, and a delicious combination of romanesco and cornichons, the acidity of which balanced the richness of the steak and marrow. A great combination. He got the Bavette steak, served with grits and onion compote, and some delicious fried bell pepper rings. Both were tasty, but the NY strip was just so perfectly cooked; it melted in my mouth. The server was super knowledgeable and very nice throughout the evening. Everyone that worked there was super great, refilling out water before it got low, and just going above and beyond to make it a super great evening. Overall, great experience. Food was delicious. Ambiance definitely passed the vibe check. If anything, the music was a bit loud at a couple moments in the evening, which made it difficult for us to hear each other; but that didn't really matter when we had food in front of us. This food was so amazing. Had a nice date night. I always love the ambience. My only complaint was when I looked online there were a lot of availability for seating. However, the hostess told us that we could only sit at the bar. I watched the main dining hall, and some of the tables remain available, the entire duration that I was there. We ordered the short rib dumplings, which were OK. However, the egg plant tempura was the highlight. It was served on top of a hummus that was amazing. We also ordered the bone in ribeye, brussels sprouts, and long beans. All of the food was delicious except for the short rib dumplings. I was expecting shredded meat however, it reminded me of a turkey meatball. We also order several drinks that were made to perfection. Highly recommend. Recommend making a reservation, otherwise you will be told there is no seating, even though there is seating. read more

Ambiance small but intimate. Great soundtrack playing in the background. Relaxed, casual vibe. Small but focused menu. Spaghetti carbonara had an interesting twist with butternut squash flavor. Loved the slightly crunchy texture. Generous portion of pecorino cheese on top. However, the portion size was very small. The bone in pork chop was tasty. The baked ricotta with pepita was our least favorite, and appeared to be a mismatch of flavors. Cocktails were good but underwhelming in size. Edward, our server, was excellent. read more

We spent the night at Grey Ghost for my birthday. First off, the staff was EXCELLENT! They made me feel very special for my birthday. Our server Sarah was great! Her service was amazing and she was so knowledgeable and helpful with all the questions we had. We split the brussel sprouts and the baked ricotta. The ricotta was so creamy and it was the perfect combo on top of the garlic asiago sourdough that comes with it. For entrees we ordered the Venison Shank and Spaghetti Carbonara. The Venison Shank had a guajillo jus that was so flavorful with a little spice to it! The meat was so tender that it fell off the bone. The bone marrow at the end was delightful! I really enjoyed the carbonara sauce on the Spaghetti Carbonara. You can tell the noodles are fresh made in house. All the drinks were delicious as well! My favorite was the Duck for Cover. It was so refreshing and it comes with a rubber duck! Grey Ghost did not disappoint! I highly recommend this establishment and will be coming back when I'm in town again! read more

Great ambiance! Harry, the bartender, was amazing! He was funny, nice, and down to earth! He knew the menu like the back of his hand! Our drinks were spot on PERFECT! My burger was well seasoned and juicy! I couldn't have asked for a better burger. Completely satisfied with our time here! Definitely a returning customer! read more

No Grey Ghost Does not have a happy hour they open at 4 PM
What kind of mushrooms are served with the strip?
Sorry can't help I am allergic to mushrooms. Avoid them!!!
Should you make areservation for Saturday nights?
YES. We tried to do a walk in on a Saturday night and the hostess told us she was concerned we would starve before they could seat us. Definitely make a reservation.
Do you take reservations for brunch?
We sure do! Reservations may be made online, by phone or using the Reserve app. Reach out with any other questions!
What are the prices like at the Grey Ghost?
Expect to pay around $85-100 for an appetizer, two entrees and a few drinks.

Some yelpers have posted photos of old menus. Although the menu has changed, the pricing is similar. I really hate it when restaurants don't post their prices.

The most romantic thing is to share. The salad bowls are a great start. Share a ribeye for dinner.
