I went to El Jarro with some friends for lunch and while the food was quick, great and tasty I had a bit of a weird experience. Somehow the waiter lost my card between me handing it to him, and the register. After looking around the restaurant it was nowhere to be found. I luckily had another card of hand, so I still paid for my meal even though my original form of payment was lost. The waiter was super nice and apologetic, but the real problem I have is with the management of the restaurant. I brought up the issue with the assistant manager as well as the manager. The assistant manager completely ignored me and walked away. He did not look at or acknowledge me AT ALL (so weird!). The manager on the other hand was so rude to me. I had brought up the issue and explained how I was surprised they did not do anything to compensate or apologize for the major inconvenience. She just frowned at me and said "just cancel the card it's not a big deal". After a bit more back and forth she sent me to the front register and I was eventually given a full refund. I am thankful for the refund, but my experience with the management was awful! It definitely put a damper on my lunch and I had to cancel all of my cards to get new ones. The restaurant eventually did call me and tell me they found my card 6 hours later, but by then I had already cancelled everything so I was still out of a credit card for a week due to this experience. We had dinner reservations for 6:30 PM and we were not seated until 7:30 PM. What's the point of making reservations when you have to wait an hour. We had a baby with us which made it a bit frustrating. With that said, I will say that our waiter was very good. He was friendly and he got our orders right. There were 9 of us so that was refreshing. We had a range of entrees from chicken and beef kebabs, chile relleno, spinach quesadillas, beef fajitas and red snapper. Our food was actually good. No complaints there. The place is a bit noisy so beware for those who are sensitive to noise. There's always an option for outdoor sitting. This restaurant has been around for over 30 years so they are obviously doing something right. They really need to work on improving their reservation system. read more

We had a group of 10 people for lunch. The interior had a nice vibe with the tortillas made at a station in the middle. Everybody really enjoyed their food. I had sizzling beef fajitas. Finally, a restaurant that grills them using only the fat in the meat so there wasn't a pool of grease on the plate. Very good flavor. Tender meat. Good sized portion. I'm particular about food and I would eat here again. The service was a bit slow at first. We had to get the waiters attention to take our order. After that, he was attentive. This is the 2nd time I've eaten at El Jarro and I'm sure it will be part of the rotation while visiting family and friends in San Antonio. El Jarro de Arturo was a big nope for me. I met a friend here for dinner and ordered the FAJITA TACOS - BEEF OR CHICKEN - 13.95 and a house margarita. Price was pretty good considering it was two tacos, borracho beans and guacamole. But overall, their prices are a bit too high for the quality of their food. The meat in the fajita tacos was unpalatable. It was chewy and I really couldn't eat most of it. The beans and guacamole were tasteless, and the margarita was ok. The service was good, but I did not like that when we requested separate bills, the waiter wrote out prices on a piece of paper. I will never understand this approach to separate bills. I'm not sure I will eat at El Jarro again. It definitely did not meet my Tex Mex expectations. read more

Ordered guacamole salad. The price was $8.95. My server asked if I'd like 1/2 an order and I said, yes. When my bill came, the charge was $8.95. My server said, that's the charge for 1/2. It was a DOLLOP of guacamole. The hostess said yes, it's $8.95 in the computer, but not on the menu. Like it was MY fault. She said she'd ask the owner. In the end, she charged me for 1/2. We wanted Mexican food tonight and my wife suggested we go back to El Jarro. I was hesitant due to some poor Yelp reviews. But it turned out to be a good experience tonight. I didn't know how busy they would be Saturday night so I had the Google Assistant make a reservation. I didn't know that was a thing before today. It worked and we were sat ahead of the walk ins. I had a margarita on the rocks, but can't recall which one it was. It was good and strong. The only minus was the glass. I should have taken a photo. It was curve inward at the top. So when I took a drink my nose was hit with ice cubes before I could take a drink. Please use a proper glass for margaritas. The chips with the salsa are substantial. They serve more of a pico salsa here. It was very flavorful and the fresh jalapeno gave it a kick. I had the Red Snapper with Butter Caper Sauce for my entree. It came with the Special Salad that includes Romaine lettuce, red bell pepper, artichoke hearts, avocado, gorgonzola, pepita seeds, and balsamic vinaigrette. The salad is very good. It also came with a side of sauteed spinach that was very tasty. The portion of Snapper they provide is a good size. It was very moist and flavorful, accented by lemon in the butter caper sauce. I was amused the side was mashed potatoes since this is a Mexican restaurant. But they were were creamy and good. When we asked about dessert and flan, they said they serve Cuban flan. It has cream cheese as opposed to the gelatinous Mexican flan. Oh my, I like this flan. Like a really moist cheesecake. My new favorite non-chocolate dessert! When I go home I noticed they charged us a $2.88 Admin Fee. What is that? Disappointed that was not disclosed ahead of time. This was on top of the bill the waiter provided. read more

First the good. Our waiter did a nice job and the queso was good. Other than that the food was horrible. We having been coming here for a very long time but the food has been terrible on our last 3 or 4 trips over the last year. We only came back because it used to be so good. My wife said the tortilla soup (which used to be her favorite tortilla soup) was the worst she has ever had anywhere. A whole bowl of dried out chicken with hardly any broth and a small piece or avocado. It looked gross. My carne guisada looked and tasted like it was warmed up from frozen. My stomach hurt all night after eating about half of it. I don't leave many bad reviews but I am hopeful they read this and can get things turned things around. read more

Visited on a weekday specifically to try their lunch buffet! You order off a menu and they bring the food to you. Note that you can take food you didn't finish home -- so that it is not wasted. However, you can't order this "to go." I sampled all the items on the menu and they were fresh and good. I would learn toward TexMex for flavor because there was not a lot of flavor with spices or chilies. Everything was mild tasting so for those with a blander palette, children, or not used to spicy food -- this it the place for you. And, it was presented well and the service was good. Beware! Ask how much a substitution on the lunch menu will cost. Prices are on the high side as it is. I ordered the Pasta Cruda ($13) and asked to add 2 grilled shrimp instead of the chicken option which was $3.95 more. They served me 4 shrimp and charged me $33.95 (non-lunch menu price) instead of $16.95 or something rational for 2 shrimp. I specifically pointed to the special on the lunch menu when ordering and my waiter was very aware of what I meant to order. He said he had no authority in correcting the bill and was actually very apologetic. The smug manager, John (you will know who he is immediately if you see him), who has never smiled or said thank you once in over 20 years said they NEVER offer shrimp on the lunch menu because they're too expensive, as if I, the customer, should know I can't expect a normal up charge for requesting 2 shrimp as a sub for chicken. Sadly, this restaurant has forgotten they serve their customers rather than the other way around. My parents spend well over $7K a year for years at this place. They eat there at least 3 times a week. Things should have been handled much differently especially since the owner was made aware and said she was unable to change the bill. It's a shame. The beef Anticuchos are HANDS DOWN THE BEST ITEM ON THE MENU!!! The meat is tender and flavorful. The soup was fantastic as well.
