Poor Carryout service tonight. Called in order at 6:08 and was told 45 minutes to pick up. Came in at 7 and was told it would be another 20 minutes went back in at 7:30 and was told it was still not ready and that the order was only put in at 7:08 an hour after I called the order in. They claimed to be too busy but the fact pattern doesn't add up and if they knew it was this backed up then a phone call to my cell would have been nice so that I wouldn't have had to wait in the car for an hour plus. We regularly go to the Greyhound Grill when in NKY visiting relatives. It's a must-do when in town on a Monday or Tuesday when it is Family Chicken Dinner night. The Greyhound does southern fried chicken and fixin's right. The green beans, slaw, mashed potatoes, gravy, and biscuits are all tasty and well prepared every time. But the star is of course the yardbird. Perfectly seasoned, breaded, fried, and served in quantities guaranteed to satisfy AND provide enough leftovers to take home for an entire second meal. Service is always friendly and attentive. Our only regret is when a tour bus inevitably rolls in. You don't want to be seated in the plainer far back room on the left when a group arrives. You won't get proper attention from your server when they're also burdened dealing with a party of 30. Additionally, the kitchen gets understandably stressed and bogged down when slammed with a bus group. Last visit we waited nearly 45 minutes for our meal, even though on chicken special nights the birds are prepared in anticipation of the always heavy demand. Still worth the wait, but if you see a bus, order an appetizer to tide you over. read more

Been awhile since I've been here and was looking forward to going back. Ordered shrimp tacos, Cajun chicken salad and chicken pasta, all which were very good. Service on the other hand, pathetic. This is the only reason for the three stars. Server, didn't like being there , let alone serving. Horrible dining experience outside of the food. Sat outside in parking lot on patio furniture due to COVID. I understand, but some outside heaters would have been nice in the 59 degree chilly weather. Server was practically MIA. I ordered the open-faced turkey sandwich. It was literally hunks of tough turkey served on a slice of cheap Wonder bread and smothered in canned gravy!! It was disgusting. The green beans were mushy and had an oddly-sugary taste. A waste of $14. I tasted my husband's fried chicken and when I bit into it. A large stream of hot grease ran down my arm. I wasn't impressed with either entree. I will say that the pimento cheese dip appetizer served with garlic pita wedges was really good. Came for a birthday dinner...Maybe I expect too much, but this was not a cheap restaurant so yes I do expect a certain level of service which we did not get. First had to beg for bread.. 2-Find our own salt and pepper as the table wasn't set properly, and everything, that is the the $30 prime ribs and baked potatoes were served cold. O for three. Supposed to be a good place. Also when the prime rib came back, it was very tough and stringy. Then when they offered a free dessert for the birthday guest of honor, we asked if they could put as little ice cream on it? They said no, we would have to pay extra for it....I mean come on after screwing up our special dinner they couldn't part with one scoop of ice cream? That is the reason I decided to write this. My family recently had an occasion to have a meal here. We had about 20 people attend. The staff was very helpful in explaining our options for food, available rooms, cost, etc. When we arrived, the setup was nicely arranged, and our orders were taken soon after we were seated. We had selected one of the group menus that had several options, but not the full menu. The food arrived quickly, was hot, and everyone enjoyed their meals. I was impressed with the service and the quality of the food, because my experience at many larger gatherings at other restaurants has not been nearly as good. I'm going to split the difference here. This is not my place. But It's a great place to go with older relatives. It's established, classic, known for fried chicken and steak. The service is casual midwest, but attentive and on point. It's American traditional, comfortable. People will often go here after Church for brunch, so you'll see people dressed up and people in very casual clothing. There's not much for vegetarians and it's not exactly light or heart-healthy. Went to the Greyhound last night with friends and familly. The fried chicken is really really good. The crusty bread - also delightful...But that's where it ends. The sides were not very good - mashed potatoes that were NOT tasting home made by any means...they were like the kind in a frozen dinner. The mushrooms were the only plain vegetable side (no broccoli, green beans?) and they were salty and just odd as a side. Then the price - I had a diet coke, salad and the fried chicken and it was $21 plus tip - that just seems high to me! I was served with 4 pieces of fried chicken though (leg, wing, breast, thigh) and had 2 left for lunch today... It's also definitely blue-hair friendly - nothing wrong with that... read more

I always think of this restaurant as the "Grey-hair Tavern." That's not a bad thing, though, since it's the older folks who know good country cooking when they taste it. They won't spend their money on grub just to go somewhere trendy--they want homemade, quality food or else they'd just as soon eat at home. I (almost) always listen to my elders, which is why I dine at Greyhound. During my most recent visit, I paid homage to my German-Irish heritage by ordering a triumvirate of cabbage--hot slaw, cole slaw, and a sauerkraut laden reuben sandwich. Sure, I had to cancel my plans to evening because I would now make horrible company, but it was well worth it. The delicious hot slaw was made with finely shredded cabbage, just barely wilted by hot and sour vinegar dressing, topped with big bits of jowl bacon. Though I planned to only eat half of my reuben and save the rest for later, the sandwich was so yummy I didn't have a choice but to eat it all. My boyfriend went with the fried chicken salad, which consisted of a bed of field greens, hand-battered chicken tenders, mandarin oranges, onions, dried cranberries, and a choice of dressing (honey mustard was the perfect complement). His assessment: "Wow, this is really good." I can't wait for Greyhound to open its second location in Burlington at the historic Tousey House, which should open within the next month. read more

I've been on the hunt for a good fried chicken and I really enjoyed this place. The decor is old-fashioned country and tends to skew to an older crowd but it's well-kept and clean. The first time we went was later on a Friday (about 8:30) and we sat at the bar. Nothing particularly great about service (which is weird since I always feel like the bartenders give the best service) but nothing bad. Food took a little long but again, it's fried chicken and if it's hot and fresh the wait to get it was perfectly fine. We got a fried chicken dinner which was absolutely delicious. Hot and crispy and worth the wait. I honestly don't even recall what sides we got with it - they weren't anything outstanding but I wasn't dissatisfied with them. The food at our dinner was a good value but I do have a little qualm with the drinks. We went for their "happy hour" so I got a $5 cosmo. It's was a bit weak and heavy on the cranberry but for $5 ok, I get it, you're not exactly going to get a strong drink. So the next drink I got was a vodka/tonic. $8.50 for one vodka tonic, with well vodka...huh? I know restaurants make a good profit on their bar sales, but seriously? $8.50 for one well vodka that had a 1.25 oz pour (yes I was a bartender for years). I mean, I might have been ok with the price if they were pouring 2 oz drinks but not at the current pour level. Plus the decor and food doesn't really support charging that much of a premium cost for liquor. That drink should have been $5.75 - $6.50 range. We went back again to try out their Sunday brunch. For $15.75/person you get an all you can eat brunch buffets with typical breakfast items: eggs, sausage, biscuits, goetta, bacon, etc. (they had this egg/mushroom bake that was delicious) and the lunch items always include: fried chicken, another meat option and typical side dishes. Everything I tried was great and $15.75/person is a good value for the food. So long story short - I'd definitely quite happily eat here again, but wait until you leave to get a drink! read more

I'm in love. My husband and I took my parents, inlaws and best friends here. Everyone's food was great. It took a little long, but it was worth the wait. I had the Kentucky Hot Brown, which was excellent, along with a side of the hot slaw which I had to stop eating before I filled up on it before getting to my entree! I was told by others in the party that the meatloaf, fish and pasta dishes were good. My mom enjoyed the spinach with egg crumbles. The only issue I had was that some entrees were huge while others were rather small. It would be wise to ask about portion size when you order. I felt a little bad because we have some loud ones in our group (not yelling, just booming voices) and we were seated near a table of quiet, elderly folks. We'll be going back for sure, but please note this isn't a place to drink all night and get loud. It would be great for a bridal or baby shower, a reserved birthday or for taking grandparents for lunch. I just don't think it screams "party!" I really like the Greyhound Tavern. We went there for the first time on a very very snowy Valentines Day after we shouldn't have left the house an hour earlier for cocktails. The second time was for Sunday Brunch. Both times the service was exceptional, as well as the food. Valentines Day I had the Sea Bass (Patagonian Toothfish). I haven't had better since I lived in Sarasota. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is the brunch buffet is lacking healthy items. A lot of fried/cheesy/carby items. But it is Southern cuisine. I would just like to see some undressed salad and some grilled/baked seafood or chicken. We left feeling full and happy both times. We will for sure be back! read more

I was in the mood for some good ole' Kentucky cooking while visiting the area. After doing some searching found the Greyhound Tavern. Historic site and very welcoming. I ate at the bar and started off with the fried green tomatoes - cornmeal dusted green tomatoes with a country ham and cream cheese mousse, topped with scallions and sweet tomato chutney. Excellent choice, lightly fried and way too much for an appetizer but I was glad there was so much. Everyone I've talked to said I had to try a Kentucky Brown while in KY. Greyhound's version was excellent. Greyhound Brown consisted of breast of turkey on white toast smothered with rich cream sauce, topped with cheddar cheese, bacon and tomato. A couple of beers and I was a very happy camper. I hear their family style fried chicken night is excellent also. Maybe next time. read more

We had my daughter-in-law's baby shower at the Greyhound Tavern on March 26, 2023. The shower included the Sunday brunch which was absolutely amazing. I can't thank Rich and Lauren enough for making this baby shower perfect. They made sure that our guest's water glasses and drinks were refilled, clean plates, fresh napkins and they made sure to ask if there was absolutely anything that our guest needed. Their service deserves above a 5 Star rating. The room that we had the shower was spotless and the newly remodeled looked was so beautiful and tastefully done. Rich and Lauren kept the room clean and fresh looking during the entire shower. We all had a wonderful time!! The brunch was excellent!! Food and serving trays were constantly filled with warm items. Presentation excellent!!! Many thanks to Crystal whom help us reserve and hold the room for Cori's special day. This is my first time in Covington for work and my manager took me here so I could try some Kentucky food staples. We shared the fried green tomatoes as a starter and they were delicious. I don't like tomatoes so I was really apprehensive to try them but was delightfully surprised. Another staple I tried was the hot brown with turkey and it was equally good. I found the prices to be extremely reasonable based off the quality and quantity of food on the plate. Service was good and the manager came around at the end of the meal to check on us. read more

My family has been coming to Greyhound for years. I even went to college with the owner's daughter. They are a traditional southern cooking restaurant with a cozy tavern feel. For lunch or brunch, the price is pretty reasonable. Dinner can be a bit pricey but their fried chicken and fish is worth it! The portions aren't huge but enough to make you pay your belly at the end of the meal. I ordered the Boursin Chicken. It was a chicken breast with Boursin cheese stuffed inside. It was good but I felt like they could've stuffed it a bit better. But it was cooked perfectly. Their green beans were out of sight for me! I love southern green beans! I would order a bowl of those if I could! My chicken came with a potato cake and a side salad with refreshing cucumber dressing. To drink, they are well known for their bourbon slushies but I enjoyed a Dixie sweet tea. One was plenty! They are also pet friendly! We were originally going to sit on the veranda to accommodate my dog. But we had a large party so she stayed home. But the wait staff demanded for me to bring her next time! Went for Sunday Brunch Buffet with family. Was extremely disappointed in selection and overall quality for the price. The selections are extremely limited (see pictures). Breakfast bar had an egg casserole with sausage and mushrooms, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, goetta, biscuit and gravy and French toast sticks. Also some packaged Danish. Entrée bar had mashed, fried and au gratin potatoes, fried popcorn shrimp(prebagged frozen), fried chicken, corn, green beans, and carved turkey. Another guest asked carver how they could not have stuffing to go with turkey. Salad bar consisted of a bowl of pre-dressed lettuce salad, a bowl of macaroni salad and some cut fruit. The dessert bar consisted of premade desserts and a hot bread pudding with vanilla sauce. While foods tasted fine nothing stood out. Even the fried chicken that is supposed to be award winning thou juicy was very under seasoned. The colonel's is much tastier. The best part of the buffet was the bread pudding and vanilla sauce which was extremely good. They didn't even have a bowl of whipped crème to add to desserts. We will not be back. There are so many better Sunday Brunch buffets nearby that are so much better for same or less money. Highly recommend the Market Street Grille in Harrison, Ohio or Ertel's Cellars Winery outside Batesville, Indiana. Both have their Head Chefs making fresh eggs and made to order omelets. Both have whole smoked salmon, grilled asparagus and various fresh homemade salads. Their pastries are from local bakeries. Ertel's has prime rib and a chef manned pasta bar making fresh pasta dishes which include fresh large shrimp. Market Street has carved roast beef and a chocolate fountain on dessert bar. read more

Stopped here with the family on a recent road trip through Kentucky. We were looking for an authentic local restaurant, and we found it in this place. The service was attentive and quite friendly. They were always ready to refill drinks and check to make sure if we needed anything. The food was hit-and-miss. I didn't care for the pecan crusted chicken. The bourbon caramel sauce was too sweet. Served with sweet potato purée, the entire dish ended up more like a dessert. My wife's fried chicken was quite tasty, and the fired cod looked good. The mashed potatoes were excellent. The ambience was nice, if a bit tired looking. They could have added a little more charm by using white tablecloths instead of the plastic they draped the tables with. So, stick with the chicken or fish. Skip this place if you eat gluten free. read more

From some of the reviews I've read of the Greyhound Tavern, the reviewers are more impressed with expressing their "lofty" opinions (read food snobs) than accurately assessing the quality of the food and service...if you are a millennial who hates dining with anyone over 35 (mom and dad too?) and will only eat arugula laced hummus, then this is not the restaurant for you...do us all a favor and go Northside or Hyde Park! If, however, you like well prepared Southern, home style cooking, with a diverse mixture of people of all ages, at a fair price, in a colonial Williamsburg style setting, then give the Greyhound a try. I love their fried chicken livers and their cod. My wife loves their fried chicken. Yes it it traditional American comfort food, and great tasting. The staff is efficient, courteous and polite and the food, while prepared quickly, does not lack quality. For lunch or dinner especially on Sundays, get there early! We have also had a few bad experiences, drinks ordered before meal not coming out until after we got our meal, or staff forgetting us for silverware or water. I guess my experience at Greyhound is a neutral one. The food was good and good service. I guess what bothered my family and I was the fact they placed us at a table right at the EXIT sign. The inevitable happened and a family came through and disrupted our dining experience. I found that poor judgment to place any object in front of any exit door. I don't like to eat in that area, and each time I make reservations, that is the general area we are placed. Another great brunch on Sunday at the GT. Food is always freshly prepared, hot and delicious! Typical breakfast fare...eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits & gravy, pancakes, etc. Lunch offerings included ham sliced to order, brussel sprouts, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes and a fantastic blackened cod. The fried chicken and green beans are to die for! The only salad offering was a spinach salad and a pasta salad. Would be nice if there was a traditional salad with dressings but it's OK. Nice fruit selection and just the right amount of dessert offerings to make most happy. Love this place. Local, neighborhood spot that I really enjoy. The service and food are usually very good and the prices are reasonable. They have a good, well-stocked bar as well. Lots of horse racing decor, and it has a really nice homey feel. Very quaint. It definitely appeals to an older crowd, which is fine by me...no screaming kids and no annoying 20-something hipsters running around. The main draw here for me is their Monday nights all-you-can-eat Fried Chicken dinner. MY GAWD THAT'S GOOD FRIED CHICKEN. Probably the best I've had eating out.
