This is one of my favorite places to go out to eat when I'm visiting my parents in northern Kentucky. It is a traditional southern restaurant with lots of quaint charm. Their fried green tomatoes are delicious, and I always get them as an appetizer. Their pimento cheese with pita wedges is also a great appetizer choice. Tired. Sad. Uninspired traditional, Southern fare. NOTE: They no longer have the $15 Brunch Buffet that the majority of these reviews are mentioning. It is now the "New Saturday Southern Breakfast" which is served from 9am-1pm from a standard menu which can be found here: http://www.greyhoundtavern.com/images/sat-breakfast-menu.pdf. After waiting for around 10-15 minutes we were seated at this old timey booth with what looked like linoleum lining on top of our table. The Greyhound Tavern (originally the Dixie Tea Room) was built in 1921. Now there is a difference in historic decor (which I have come to appreciate) and then there is just old and outdated decor. This place just seemed like it needed some TLC. The atmosphere is not something I would come back for, and the patrons were all 80+. I did not see anyone under the age of 60 in the entire restaurant besides the servers who all looked like they were in high school. Moving on, we ordered: Breakfast Brown 8.95 Biscuits topped with homemade sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage links, cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, and tomato Chicken And Waffle 8.95 Belgian waffle topped with our award winning crispy fried chicken breast, powdered sugar and served with warm maple syrup This food seemed straight out of the 1950's. Giant portions & no seasoning. I'll be the first to say, I love simple food. But if you are going to do something as simple as this, it has to at least be seasoned. The Breakfast Brown was a greasy mess. There were only two small biscuits which were hard, stale and hidden under a giant portion of gravy. The sausage links were undercooked and the texture was extremely off-putting. I took one bite and set them aside. The tiny bacon crumbles tasted like they came out of the bottom of a burnt pan. All these flavors just melded into one big heaping soggy mess. The Chicken and Waffle had a bit more life to it. The chicken was cooked properly and was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside, although there was again absolutely no flavor what-so-ever not even salt. If you would've thrown on some salt, cayenne, heck anything this chicken would have been great. The waffle was home made which I can appreciate, but was completely dry and served with a small pre-packaged container of Smuckers breakfast syrup. Ew. I feel like the entire dish was just bland and lacked any kind of flavor. The only hint of a saving grace was the fact that they have "bottomless brunch drinks." This includes a Bloody Mary served with a bacon swizzle stick, pickled asparagus, & bleu cheese olives with a salted rim. Mine came out with no bacon, one olive, no salted rim, and again no flavor. They also offer a mimosa, & a sangria all bottomless for around $8 which is unheard of in Cincinnati. In shock we thought to ourselves how can they afford to do this? Then we looked around and realized we were the only ones in our sight who ordered a cocktail. The rest were sipping iced tea. Overall while eating here I felt like I was living what you would see in a 1950's edition of a Better Crocker cook book. From the decor, the food, the drinks, the patrons. A number of locals raved to me about greyhound's brunch so honestly I was excited to give it a shot. It was...meh. I probably wouldn't pick to go there again but if someone REALLY wanted it I wouldn't fight them over it and would accompany - you know that kind of place! The brunch is a buffet. Some people love this! I, unfortunately, not a huge buffet fan - unless it is a truly phenomenal buffet. The buffet was kinda vanilla - bacon, biscuits, carved meat, some pastries. The food was good by all means - just a little forgettable. Service was great and we had the sweetest southern waitress - who was probably the best part of the experience. The price is okay. I'd say a bit overpriced for what kinda reminded me of a dressed up shoneys buffet but I wasn't overly turned off by the cost. I should note that I took my grandmother and she LOVED it. If she knew what yelp was she'd probably give it a 5 - so maybe it just depends on what ya like. Also the drink menu did catch my eye so hopefully we can check out a cocktail their soon and maybe enjoy dinner there more than brunch! read more

The Greyhound Tavern is great place to take your mother for dinner. It has a charm from an older time period. The waiters are well dressed, the lay out friendly but conservative. Family seating and some family based meals are available. I went for a work evening event. Part of our table split the family style chicken and sides. Their chicken, as always, was very well cooked and moist. It was well seasoned. The green beans and mashed potatoes were served on the side and with family style, they have unlimited refills. Four of us ate from the family serving and we still had three pieces of chicken left to take home. The serving size on the green beans and mashed potatoes (white gravy on side) was rather small but they do refill them quickly. The others at our table who order steak or fish were also very happy with their meals. The waiter was helpful without being intrusive. I like the Greyhound Tavern and the food is always good but I rarely go unless someone else suggests it. I'm not sure why but it may be that I always feel like I should have a group when I go and not just me. Good food, great family or family event dinner location. Good food, okay service. I hate driving on interstates in the rain, but we drove 2 hours, one way, in the rain, just to celebrate my birthday at the Greyhound Tavern. I didn't realize they were having their wild game weekend & the place was packed but our food was delicious, as always. We started with fried green tomatoes and onion rings, both appetizers I could make a meal from alone. Except then, I would never be able to enjoy the excellent Pecan Crusted Chicken. Served on a bed of mashed sweet potatoes and a side, I can rarely finish a meal but it's Oh! So good! I've eaten there many times, & no one at my table has ever been disappointed! I took my wife and 2 others to Sunday Brunch based on a recommendation from someone who had been to the brunch at some point in past years. Also, the fact that they had hot slaw on their regular menu, which is a rarity. Unfortunately, this was not one of the offerings at the brunch. The breakfast part of the brunch included: scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, goetta and fried potatoes among other things which were all very good. However, their specialty, fried chicken was a huge disappointment. The tray was not refreshed to the point that allowed for a good selection of chicken pieces. I went to the buffet 3 times and the chicken pan usually has only 12-15 small pieces of chicken. I wanted a breast and there was never one in the tray. I had to settle for 2 small thighs. There were a variety of sides that we're OK. The dessert table was another diappointment. There were small pieces of several types of cheesecake, cake and plastic cocktail glasses with approximately 2 tablespoons of some type of cobbler All were unremarkable. I was expecting maybe smaller pieces of pie that they had on the regular menu. Service was good. We would not return for the brunch. read more

Treated a friend to lunch. We shared the Reuben Sandwich with a bowl of Tomato Bisque soup. All of it was delicious! The soup had a little bite to it that made it tasted. The times when Raj, Arnold Horshak, and Potzie first appeared on TV? Probably not. But give or take a ten or twenty million seconds, a few thousand hours, several hundred days, a couple of dozen months, or a year or two, any of those times could very well be when all the clocks at the Greyhound Tavern stopped cold. Only the Greyhound's patrons have aged, apparently. Back then, they were around 50 or 55. OK, that's a slight exaggeration. But on the day we were there, the crowd consisted largely of pairs of mothers and daughters having lunch together. The DAUGHTERS were 60 or 65 years old. (In fairness, I must concede that I am pretty old, too! And I must concede as well that at some point the Greyhound's menu was updated with a taco salad and a Southwestern-style chicken sandwich, which pulls it all the way into the late 1980s or thereabouts!) Anyway, heading back into town from points south, we stopped into the Greyhound for pretty much one reason: to try the much-heralded fried chicken. But Sweet Jeebus, I was shocked and dismayed to receive the menu and find that the Greyhound charges SEVENTEEN DOLLARS for a plate of their signature product. I don't care how good this fried chicken is--and my quick glance at a plate of the stuff from halfway across the dining room suggested a very nice crispiness--I am not paying anywhere close to SEVENTEEN DOLLARS for fried chicken. Sorry, Greyhound Tavern. So I ordered a Hot Brown. It was pretty good. But having had the original at the Brown Hotel in Louisville a few years back, I have concluded that all other Hot Browns are disappointing by comparison, including the Greyhound's. My wife said her reuben was pretty good. On the plus side, our server was as friendly and attentive as he could be, and it looked like other servers were similarly on top of it. And the Greyhound has very fresh, strong iced tea. Probably won't be back, unless my Magic 8 Ball scares me into going for the fried chicken despite the outrageous price. read more

Solid experience and food. Obviously a place that has a loyal following and easy to see why. Food was a 4+. Their fried chicken was "their specialty" and it did not disappoint. Very juicy without being greasy with a crisp and flavorful crust, skin. Not heavy or over seasoned. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned as well as at any steakhouse I have been to. Mashed potatoes were not special, Green beans were good. Fruit cobbler for dessert was a great finish! Downside was service - a gracious 3. It was slow, not really attentive. After ordering I asked if they could bring the bread and was told "it will come when the meals do". I was taken aback and just let it go. Paul and I arrived at opening this morning and were one of two parties there between 9:00 and 9:45 A.M. Besides the lack of patrons, I immediately noticed the dated look of the restaurant. The host greeted us right away and asked us where we wanted to be seated. The restaurant is expansive, so there were plenty of options. We chose a small table and immediately regretted it due to the uncomfortable nature of the wooden chairs. When our server, Joe, arrived, we asked to be reseated and he cheerfully led us to a booth, which was much more comfortable despite the well worn seating. Since this was our first time dining there, Joe made some recommendations. I chose an iced tea and the country omelette with a biscuit, home fries, and fruit. Paul opted for coffee and the breakfast brown with cheesy grits and fruit. My tea was slightly bitter. Before I mentioned it, Joe noticed that it was cloudy and offered to replace it. The salt-cured ham in the country omelette was delicious and the cheddar cheese played well with it. I think they should add some vegetables to the omelette. The home fries were good in that they were not absurdly greasy, but they lacked seasoning. The biscuit was good, and the fresh fruit was a nice palate refresher. They should definitely increase the serving size of the fruit. It comes in a condiment container, which amounts to a few bites. Paul's coffee was "basic." His breakfast brown was "good, but a bit too greasy." I tried his grits and thought they were whatever. Any grit without some heat is not for me. I really wish Yelp would update their platform to allow for reviews in half star increments. This was a solid 3.5 star experience rounded up to 4 stars due to great service. read more

We went to the Greyhound Tavern because I had heard it was a must do in the city. I don't know that I would call it that, but we did have a pleasant meal with great service. We went at a busy time and only waited 20 minutes. There was an initial mixup with the wait for our drinks and our appetizer didn't come until our meals did. We ordered the onion rings, one of their signatures, and it came out with raw onion in the middle. Since we had our food, we opted not to get a fresh dish. They were awesome about it. Everyone apologized and even the manager came over and offered to comp dessert. We were so full from our meals that we didn't take them up on it, but we will come back to try breakfast. I ordered the salmon with a side salad and mashed potatoes and my husband ordered the fried chicken (another signature) with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. My salmon was grilled perfectly with a tasty dill sauce to compliment (warning, must love dill!). The mashed potatoes were good too with no lumps, and the side salad was fresh. My husband enjoyed the fried chicken, but we both agreed we'd had its equal elsewhere. He loved the mac and cheese and you can tell it is baked with all real cheese. Our server checked on us plenty and was very friendly. The manager and hostess were great too. He took the time to show us the menu for the new Saturday breakfast, which I can't wait to try. Oh, and for those that complain about the wooden chairs (and they are uncomfortable), just ask for a cushion. They have several to choose from and my big butt was happy too! read more

Visited for lunch around Thanksgiving and really loved the atmosphere. Cosy, welcoming and friendly staff. There were quite a few things on the menu to tempt me, but as a major onion rings fan, I opted for those and a club sandwich. The sandwich was huge! I could only eat half of it before admitting defeat. It was really good though and they offered to box it for me to take away. The onion rings were so big you could wear them as bracelets. REALLY GREAT FRIED CHICKEN!!! Even the breast was juicy, not over cooked. I also enjoyed the Fried Fish. The Green Beans were well seasoned and the Broccoli casserole was cheesy. This place was recommend to me by the CVB of North Kentucky. Wow! That is really an understatement, though. I had a group of 27 and our previous dinner plans had to be cancelled and I was desperate for a place for dinner. I called the CVB and my contact, Christy, recommended this place. The recently added outdoor seating is wonderful. Since I've eaten there twice this week, I thought it was time for a review. Both lunches I had the same thing: spinach salad with chicken and their hot bacon dressing. Not a morsel left in the bowl when lunch was over. My companion today had their always delicious cod sandwich. In the past, I've had the cod, the meatloaf and the best chicken in the area. Came back to KY from CA to visit relatives and had go there for local food, which was as good or better than I recall. This is a hidden gem on the Dixie Highway and well worth visiting. The Hot Brown was fantastic, better than I remembered. The home made onion rings have to be the best is the area, with portions larger than I expected. I've been to Greyhound quite a few times, particularly on Mondays when they have their fried chicken special. My family favors this place for their fried chicken and we try to get together as often as possible to enjoy a delicious meal in a quiet clean environment.
