Wow! Once again Yelp has come through. Passing through we searched the highest rated place. This was it and it shows. Service was great, but the food stole the show. Hot wings were just how I liked them. Crispy outside with out breading with amazing flavor. The make your own burger was also just right. Grilled just the way I ordered. My first impression on walking in was that we just wasted a bunch of money on ambiance, when my priority is food and service. They stepped up to the plate in every aspect. Service: We came in as a husband and wife with 2 children, ages 5 and two. (I think our server's name was Hillary?) In any case, she and the entire staff were great. We asked about a kids menu - as none appeared on the main menu- but they'll basically make a kids version at a reduced priced for anything you like. We can usually tell right off the bat if our server has kids when they provide extra napkins and get the kids food out stat. Hillary gave us a creative surface for our ten-month-old to eat from, since we didn't want him to toss a plate on the floor. Not long after, my wife totally ditched my full Diet Pepsi all over the table, floor, and broke the glass. The entire crew spurred into action and were very helpful. They also gave me a to-go cup for a Diet Coke to take home with me. Food: I asked if there's one thing I have to have here (as I was in town on a conference and leaving the next day), what would it be. She actually gave it some thought and didn't just mention the most expensive thing on the menu: the cheeseburger that has two bacon-filled grilled cheese sandwiches as a bun. DE-LISH. I doubt this place is known for its desserts as they only had two, but they happen to be my faves: deep fried Twinkie and brownie sundae. Our group ordered both and split them. Food was delicious as always but SUPER disappointed in the service. We went during brunch on a Sunday and it was totally unorganized, waitresses were not attentive at all, and service all around was just terrible. All the tables around us experienced the same thing from what I witnessed and overheard. We waited 15mins just to get our drinks, food coming out 10-15mins after others in the same party/at the same table, no refills, no checking in, waiting 15+mins for the check (when there was multiple families waiting to be seated) etc. There were at least 5 waitresses and they all looked to be running around doing a whole lot of nothing. The waitress that started us and took our orders disappeared by the end and was not seen again after our food was brought out. Sad because this is my go to place but I can't justify 2+hrs in a restaurant with my kids just because of inattentive service. read more

We went on a Saturday evening the place was packed. There was a short wait. Waiters were very attentive even with a huge crowd. I had chicken strips for appetizer. It was crispy. Slightly oily as well. Shrimp poboy sandwich was good too. If you have sweet tooth you will like donut burger. The guy sitting next to me had double grilled cheese burger. That looked very yummy. Last few times I've visited I've been underwhelmed with the food. Either the fries are over salted, burger over salted or the burger is way under cooked on the inside and charged on the outside and aged (not in a good way, like in the blood from the raw meat has turned brown so it's hard to decipher if it's cooked through just by the naked eye) They non burger items are great. I've had no complaints. Maybe it's a new staff in the kitchen, or priorities out of order; if they're primarily a burger and beer joint I expect a bit more considering the price point and being a sit down restaurant. I'll still consider going back. The staff is friendly and inviting. Maybe after I taste a bit more of what of culpeper has to offer. read more

At lunch yesterday, I had a 'build your own burger', fries, and an unsweetened tea. The burger seemed handmade and cooked medium well as requested. I had no bun, lettuce, tomato and onion. Halfway through the meal I felt queasy and wondered, but it tasted fine. Right after leaving, I was sick in the churchyard around the corner. Driving home, we stopped for me to get sick roadside. I spent the rest the afternoon, all night long, and even once the next morning barfing my guts out when I wasn't in bed writhing in pain. People wanted me to go to the hospital. Thirty hours later, I could finally sit up and drink liquids. I was food poisoned at Grill 309. If you think the food is good, imagine it when you are hunched over a toilet with chunks blowing out your nose. This restaurant should be closed. read more

Outstanding!!! This place has a bit of a hipster vibe. Not very big in size, but a nice hangout stop on for a date. Even with the limited space 2 tv were available to watch the game. The food was unexpectedly perfect, best burger I have ever eaten. I definitely suggest this place for anyone in or visiting the Culpeper area. read more

While waiting for a dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant, we stopped in here for a happy hour drink. Upon walking in, we were immediately greeted, but I don't think the server was listening to us when we said we were there to enjoy their happy hour... pointed out the menus and when I asked which menu described happy hour, he pointed to both menus (a beer list and food menu with drinks listed). When he came back to get our order, I (for the 3rd time mentioned happy hour) and then he said "Oh, you get a dollar or two off of drinks." We ordered a wine and a cocktail. Both were decent and we also ordered their onion rings. The onion rings were really nicely done in a tempura batter. They lacked salt and savoriness, so we got a side of ranch to go with them. The ranch was warm and was clearly not homemade. Business picked up while we were there and they were clearly selling lots of burgers and fries, as that seems to be very popular and I'm sure those items are tasty, as they looked and smelled amazing. The servers were a mixed bag... From the guy who seemed friendly who initially took care of us, to the lady who was wearing a thick coat (which shouldn't be permitted while serving) who brought us our ranch and o-rings, to the last lady who took care of us, who was very nice and sincerely friendly. Service overall was adequate, but far from professional. Overall, if I was back in Culpeper and wanted a burger, I might come here. read more

SALTY.My husband and I ordered carryout recently for dinner on a Saturday night. I got the Ceasar Chicken wrap and he had the Turkey Guacamole wrap. The hand cut chips were so salty we couldn't eat them. My Ceasar wrap was cut down the middle and I only found chicken on one half. That wrap was also salty but it may have been the dressing. Really good food and great service. Popped in here for lunch while traveling through town and enjoyed the experience. I was relatively pressed for time, but everything came quickly and efficiently. Had the Gumbo and House Salad with chicken and vinaigrette dressing. It's really easy to make a lackluster salad and very difficult to make a superb one. This one was the latter. We discovered Grill 309 last year on our first night moving to the Culpeper area-we liked it from that first time and it has become our favorite restaurant. The food is delicious, with the chef easily traversing a landscape of cuisines. There are ever changing daily specials, including today's slow roasted pulled pork barbecue, truly one of the best I've ever had. The onion rings and sweet potato fries are also top notch. My husband would happily just order the sweet dipping sauce for the fries by itself-he's addicted. The service is always excellent as well, just as it was again today when Ashley was our server-she was personable, professional, just downright nice (the barbecue was her recommendation too!). Hit or miss pretty much. I like their burgers more than anything else. My boyfriend and I like to go on Mondays when they have the $5 special. The last time I went they had shrimp tacos. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting. The slaw had a decent flavor but they piled way too much on there with like 3 little baby shrimp. *stale face* Not what I'm looking for in a shrimp taco. This place is absolutely amazing! The decor was modern and clean, the outdoor patio was shady and well stocked with condiments, bowls for dogs, and nice plants. I ordered the turkey burger for lunch, and our waitress Rachel was very attentive and helped me with a custom order. The veggies were incredibly fresh, the burger was grilled to perfection, and the home fries were absolutely to die for! The bathrooms were very clean and side street parking was easily accessible. The bar was very well stocked and drink menus were readily available at each table. Great prices--perfect for casual dining, a date, or business lunch. When one looks at the menu for Grill 309, it's easy to see that they are a burger joint. At the very least, burgers figure prominently on the menu. So you'd think then, since burgers appear to be a specialty, that they'd be perfectly prepared, right? Don't think that, you'd be wrong. I had two issues with my Gyro Feta Burger. First, pepper. I swear that there was enough pepper on that burger to season a dozen burgers. Pepper is a spice and should enhance, not overwhelm. A dining partner had a build your own burger and it was equally over-peppered. Seriously. My mouth was burning from so much pepper! Won't be doing that again. Second, my burger was overcooked. (So was one of my dining partners) A medium rare burger should have some pink inside. My burger was blackened on the outside and brown all the way through. If I'd been dining alone, I'd have sent it back, however, given the pepper overload, I'm not likely to have that problem again since burgers won't be a consideration the next time. On the positive note, the fries were fabulous. Perfectly cooked. We also had a poutine appetizer, an although the fries were perfect and the gravy was OK, the cheese curds were so minuscule (much smaller than a pea) that they imparted no flavor to the dish. Yeah, I might still go back but there are plenty of other dining options in Culpeper that I'd consider first. read more

I stopped here looking for a relaxing place to kill a bit of time waiting for a friend. I was pleasantly surprised that even though I showed up on a Sunday in the middle of their busy lunch rush I was able to get a table. I think the only reason that held true was because I was a party of one :-(. It seemed like a very nice hidden gem that could be located in any major city but is tucked away in a smaller town. The menu is straightforward bar food but they have a few items that make them stand out as unique. I tried the donut burger because, well, a lifelong goal, I guess! The French fries were freshly cut and fried perfectly ~~A+ The donut burger uses a glazed donut cut in half for the top and bottom bun. I believe the famous Atlanta restaurant that started this trend uses two entire Krispy Kreme donuts for the bun. I would have like a little bit more sweet but overall I was very satisfied. The bacon was thick and smoky, I ordered the egg over medium and it was cooked perfectly. The burger was cooked to a nice medium as ordered. The burger was good but I was not a fan of the beef mix/seasoning they used. The beef was a little too tangy and almost reminded me of meatloaf or bison. I am guessing too much worsterchire sauce. ~~B A good 80/20 beef with salt and pepper seasoning would have made this easily an A+. Next time I will try the chicken and waffle sandwich. There is no better combination than savory and sweet! read more

We were looking for a decent restaurant in Culpeper VA. And the app said it was open. But upon arrival we realized it and almost everything around it was closed. Except for The Sangria Bowl. Other than the fact that it was damn near impossible to figure out how to get up to it. And there were not any signs pointing you in the right direction. Wonderful local restaurant and a nice relaxing place to take out of town visitors. They stay open a bit later than most of the nearby restaurants on weeknights which is nice -- not everyone in Culpeper wants to eat early. They have a nice menu with a good selection of food that is not at all pretentious and is reasonably priced. I had the fish & chips and my friend had a burger with their homemade chips, both of us were happy with our choices. I would have liked a more variety in their desert selection, but they did have a several choices available if you like chocolate. Hopefully during the summer they'll have fruit pies or something. Parking was very convenient with free parking on the side street or across the street in a town lot. read more
