The food here is fantastic! My husband, daughter, and I all stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. We had poutine as an appetizer and it was top notch, delicious! My husband had the double grilled burger, I had the blackened chicken sandwich, and our daughter opted for the hotdog. All meals were served with the house made fries which are incredible! It was busy but we were seated quickly, that being said here is our only complaint, this restaurant is WAY over staffed. We had FOUR different people serving our table, FOUR! It was absolutely absurd. There were waiters and waitresses just standing around talking with nothing to do. It got a little incessant being asked every three minutes of we were ok, do we need anything. We barely had a chance to enjoy our meal. read more

Is it possible to fall in love with a restaurant at first bite? Grill 309 exceeded all of my expectations in a great restaurant! Our server Shaina (Shay-nuh) was amazing...kind, attentive, friendly, fun and just overall a great personality. Our mouths were watering over the menu choices... Chicken and waffle sandwiches, burgers on doughnuts, gyro burger, fish tacos...they seemed like they had anything we would want to try. I went with the double grilled cheese burger that has a grilled cheese sandwich as the bun, I subbed the plain fries for poutine ($2 up charge) because I haven't eaten that since visiting Canada years ago. My husband choose the gyro burger. They didn't have a kids menu but gave us some suggestions that they provide for kids, they were very accommodating! All the food was fabulous, juicy burgers full of flavor, no complaints from the kids. Everything was great! I would suggest sharing the double grilled cheese burger because it's HUGE! My only regret was not tipping Shaina more, but I will definitely be back to make up for that one. read more

First time going here. We got an appetizer of the bacon corn jalapeno bites... there weren't that many but they were good. One was still cold in the middle so that was a little off-putting.My sister ordered the donut burger without the egg which to me is blasphemous... I didn't try it but the meat was dry as heck. She asked for well done so that's already a problem but it just looked like they ducked every bit of moisture out of it. She said it was good except for that. The fries are the texture of five guys... soft and limp, but seasoned. I didn't like them, but my sister did. My mother ordered the grilled cheese burger, which is a burger using 2 grilled cheese sandwiches with bacon as the bun. Again with the extra dry meat... she ordered it med well and it was burnt... so obviously the cook doesn't know how to gauge temperature. It ruined the burger for my mother. She got tots with hers and those were good. I got the chicken n waffles. It was supposed to have an over easy egg but they put a tooth pick through my egg, so by the time it got to me the yolk wasn't even there, defeating the purpose... the 'spicy' maple syrup was basic syrup. I got a Caesar salad, paying additional... the salad was brown around the edges or the lettuce and came in a tiny bowl that was just ridiculous for charging that much additional. The service was awesome in terms of being served. They had drinks refilled at about half, they asked if we we needed anything else every time they were at the table... the only complaint as far as service goes is that the waitress didn't even check if there was something she could do about the burger for my mom who specifically said don't burn it. BUT my mother kept saying I'm OK I'm OK at the first part of the meal. She actually ended up eating the grilled cheeses and leaving the entire burger petty on the plate. Had she let me send it back in the beginning they may have redone it correctly, or taken it off. The place was decently busy, and the food was a but slow. Not the hottest when it finally got to the table, but not cold either. Over all it was an OK experience. I'd go back again. Probably more than once. read more

If you are really hungry, you will love the portions. They have great burgers and really interesting combinations that taste great. The setting is equally as wonderful. The only really negatives are: not many healthy options and they are pretty heavy on the grease. If you don't work out everyday, I'd make this an occasional splurge...unless you just really like your your cardiologist and want to be paying for that new boat he's been eyeing :) Still, even then, the food tastes so good it might be worth it. read more

So freaking good! Just finished my meal and I figured I'd give this place a review. We started with the sweet potato fries which were cooked perfectly and serve with a sweet glaze. It was great. My friend and I both ordered the gyro burger. Burger with gyro meat. Great right? It was!! The gyro meat was very tender and good flavor. The feta was a slice and not over whelming at all which feta can be sometimes. Over all a really good experience. Our server was friendly. I'll be back for sure! read more

Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, and the service is the same. This place is one of me and my families favorite spots to go for a get together. I think the only problem about the place is how small the restaurant is. On days where it's nice out they do have extra seating but on any cold day all they have is a handful of indoor tables. Good place for burgers!! The double grilled cheeseburger is excellent and so is the doughnut burger! The Poutine is delicious! Good friendly service, price is reasonable for what you get. I had higher expectations of the amount of selections on the menu this place is mostly sandwiches and burgers. One of the waitresses was not very friendly, she seemed like she was impatient while waiting on us. Ordered a blueberry bliss cocktail which they could not make because they didn't have blueberries so they offered a strawberry version which was VERY delicious! The shrimp tacos were disappointing. Only ate 1 out of the 3 and didn't bother asking for a take out box. But the fries were better than they looked had a nice seasoning on them. Overall wasn't impressed with this place. read more

Really good fries. The beer menu was dated and we had to order multiple times only to have waiter return and let us know they didn't have it. HOWEVER, a guy came out and brought samples, for free, of two similar beers so we were able to choose what we liked. Thought that was pretty awesome. We went as a group in between cake tastings just as a quick stop and was very impressed. We found the little diner here on yelp and it had pretty good ratings. We came in and immediately got greeted. We were seated almost instantly and got our drinks within minutes. Food didn't take long to come out and when it did it was delish!! Definitely would recommend! read more

This place is so different now compared to its first year open. The last time we ate there the wait staff completely neglected us. At one point our server sat down at a table next to us, apparently on her break as she was eating, and nobody else checked on us, refilled drinks, etc. Finally, after staring at him for a minute, it occurred to another server to bring our check. Tonight I went in for the flat iron steak, this was a new addition to the menu, it was was a filet to die for, this was the best steak I've had in Culpeper and there are good steaks in this town. While I am sure the food is still stellar, I am updating my rating as we went from being 2X a week or more customers to no longer being customers based upon the way they sell their beer and the elimination of some food items. There is nothing to indicate what size beer you are getting. We were actually told by a manager that they do not serve dark beers in pint glasses. That was the last straw. I've been frequenting 309 pretty much since it opened. Yesterday was the first time the service was absolutely awful! Our server appeared inexperienced and was practically walking in circles. We ordered drinks and 2 seconds later he can back and asked "what did you want again?" One guest ordered Fat Tire which the server thought was a cocktail. He came back about 5 minutes later only to say they didn't have that beer. The food took much longer than usual to come out and at that point there weren't many diners. About 3/4 of the way through our meal, another server came over to ask how everything was and I told him there were a few blips. He smiled and walked away! He came back about 15 minutes later to ask if we were ready for the check and I asked where our original server was and he said there was a change of shifts. It would have been nice if someone told us that! So our second server asked if we wanted the bill spilt. There were two people on one side that wanted one check and two people on the other side that wanted individual checks. He came back with two checks! He combined the individual checks!!! I'll continue to dine there but can only hope we don't have another horrific experience! read more

Had the patty melt and sweet potato fries. Hubby had fish and chips and pomme frites. We started with appetizer of fried onion rings. Coating on onion rings and fish was thick and heavy. Onions themselves were cut way too thick. Patty met had greasy onions. Our fault to order all fried food but all in all the food felt heavy and greasy. Bill with tip came to nearly $50-way too pricey for lunch. Again, it was what we ordered but just be aware it won't be inexpensive bar food. Some may like it but we were not a fan. read more

I really loved this place. It's not that same old sandwich shop you get anywhere else. The location is fantastic. The food is fantastic. The service is amazing. To help me decide on my meal I looked at Yelp pics and asked my server to help me on the tie breakers. I didn't even try to eat everything and I had to try that deep fried Twinkie. I have been remiss in not writing this sooner. My wife and I have been to Grill 309 about a dozen times now. From their first few days until now. Such a nice and long-awaited addition to the foodie scene in Culpeper. Fantastic well crafted comfort food with a twist of Greek, a hint of southern home style, sometimes creatively edgy menu choices with some great favorites. My faves: Patty melt, Grilled cheese burger (yes, grilled cheese as the buns), Feta burger YUM!, truffle fries (yes please!). FINALLY! Young, local, adventuresome couple with restaurant experience goes for it and turns out a great product! I've been around the restaurant biz since I was 7 (brother a chef and I a barkeep/ line cook) and I've never seen a new restaurant keep the consistent excellent food starlight out of the box. Of course there were some growing pains, but the food and array of great beer/mixed drink options never, ever suffered. Keep up the great work! If you are looking for that "great local bar with neighborhood feel to their menu and waitstaff", well then look no further. Passionate about their product, excellent menu (that changes often), fantastic taste for local brew and other spirits, then Grill 309 is exactly the place. Glory Days, it was a great run. Had lunch here with friends after a huge breakfast so I only had an appetizer. "The Dip" with tzatziki was absolutely perfect. Tangy, creamy sauce served with warm toasted pita. Big portion for $6 and I inhaled all of it myself. I have nothing whatsoever to criticize about this dish. It's too bad I don't live closer because I'd be eating this weekly! read more

Very disappointed with the greeting we got as soon as we entered 309...which we go to often.. we walk through the front doors around 6pm on july 5th a gentlemen server walked passed us and said "you can sit anywhere you would like" and pointed to the dinning room. We saw one table that was open outside and wanted to see if we could sit out there. So when he came out again I simply asked him if we could sit outside. He walk passed us and said " I said.. you can sit wherever you want" and then proceeded to roll his eyes at us then continued walking. I was so taken back by this rude server and even made eye contact with a waitress at the register that also noticed his rude behavior and had the same look on her face as I did. So we literally turned around and walked out as it was very noticeable that this server did not want anything to do with us... I truly hope the owner will read this review because we have had this specific gentlemen wait on us before and he was great. But as someone who has worked in the restaurant business as a server ... if you are having a bad day..remove yourself from the floor.. don't make an ass of yourself and push customer literally out of the restaurant. read more

When someone asks what I'd like to eat, Grill 309 is always my first answer. Since 309 opened, the food is almost always consistently great. Each time I visit, I order the same burger with a warm brownie sundae for dessert. Only once have I gotten toppings that I hadn't asked for, and the waitstaff is always quick to correct the issue. I eat my burgers medium rare, and the kitchen always meets my request so that it's safe to consume while matching the flavor I'm looking for. The fries are made custom, and initially they were the best in Culpeper - recently, however, they have been more soft/soggy than before. This isn't a totally bad thing, as they also offer make their own chips daily, as well as other appetizers. I often order my food to-go, and they always make it as quick and easy process. Most of the waiters are cheerful, but there is a few on the staff who aren't very enthused to be there/working. Walter is one of the best employees - he's one of the ones who has been there the longest, just after they opened. When you walk in the door, he always greets you with a smile. With the restaurant being so popular, there are nights when it is very busy. Personally, I tend to wait it out, but that isn't something most will do. My worst experience regarding 309's food occurred last month when my burger was cooked to be well-done. My waiter was very, and I have a lot of compassion for waitstaff as they aren't responsible for errors made in the kitchen. When I received my new burger, it was made the exact same way and took a very long time to come out. Again, I am very understanding of the employees, but this wasn't the most satisfactory night. In regards to the owners, I will say that their presence and attitude has been a complete shift as they were in the beginning of the restaurant. Before, they were always in the restaurant, talking to all visitors at their booths and being generally sociable and active in their business. Now, however, it is a rarity to see them at all, and when you do, they are distracted or not very aware of their surroundings. I will say that James is in the kitchen very often, which redeems his absense on the social end of things. All in all, Grill 309 is a great local bar with wonderful, broad spectrum of food, beers, and friendly atmosphere. read more

Delicious!!! The food and staff are both phenomenal. The management came over and asked how our food was and how we were doing. Our waitress was fantastic. I cannot say enough about the yummy food. I always get the Patty Melt and the rye bread is amazing. My family ordered all different items off the menu and everyone thought their meal was delicious. The fries are also like something you would get at the fair or beach board walk. Yum. Definitely recommend and will return again :) read more

This place is just what Culpeper needed! Friendly staff, fresh drinks, fantastic craft beer selection and ohhhh the food! Crazy size burgers that will leave you in awe but I have to comment on the gyro. The tzaiki is apparently home made and just spectacular. As I watched the gigantic burgers roll out I simply smiled as I happily ate my gyro. You will not leave here hungry. Weekends appear to be very busy but we were told they accept reservations. Good to know! Plan to go back for an evening at the bar - they seemed like a fun group. read more
