I discovered this brand of pickles during the pandemic at my local Stop & Shop, and I haven't bought another pickle brand since. I always prefer whole pickles for that freshly sliced crispness, and the half sours are my preference. Grillo's gives you that unique garlicky, briny, flavor with a not-so-subtle lemony twist. Whether sliced in rounds or spears, or diced in tartar, Grillo's is my go-to pickle. Now...I won't deduct any stars for the plastic tub, but I challenge you to open a new container without spilling a good amount of brine on your countertops, and maybe even slicing your finger on the plastic. I have bought and eaten a lot of pickles. They're pretty good on the keto diet with low carb and great flavor. I find the best ones are not in the grocery aisle with the capers and the roasted red peppers. The best are in the cold section of the grocery store near the bacon and sausages. Today, I decided to try this interesting tub of Grillo's in my local Publix here in Charlotte. And now I AM HOOKED. Best pickles EVER. After polishing off that first tub, I now have two more in the fridge that are slowly being consumed with lunch every day. I've been getting the classic dill pickle spears and they're amazing. Crisp, crunchy, flavorful and randomly sliced enough to know that there's a human being on the other end of this manufacturing line and not just machinery. *warm fuzzies* Other than spears of pickled cucumber, you'll find big pieces of garlic and dill leaves and the occasional grape leaf plus some other goodies in there. The container is FULL to the top and densely packed with pickles. The first few times you open it, there is the potential for a spray of pickle juice so take appropriate care. After consuming mainly Claussen-brand pickles for years, it was a nice change to try another brand. THE GOODS: Dill Spears - Available at our local Costco, their slogan "World's Best Pickles" caught my eye as I passed them in the refrigerator. It's a big container at 52 ounces and cheap at around $7. The spears are crunchy like a Claussen but aren't as salty, meaning you palate more of the cucumber's natural flavors rather than just sodium. Best of all, check out the ingredients on the label! Cucumbers, water, distilled white vinegar, salt, garlic, dill and grape leaves. No chemicals and unknown substances. The homemade taste is very obvious. TIP: They also sell hot pickles, whole pickles, pickle chips, sour pickles, bread and butter pickles, a pickle vinegar drink, a lemon vinegar drink and even a pickle de gallo. OVERALL: From being sold out of the trunk of an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, upgrading to a pickle cart, and now to the refrigerators of wholesale giant Costco, I'd say they've made it. I had some Grillo's pickles once before and they were quite good, but the texture was a little...uh...late tasting. This is excusable as it was during the end of the pandemic and everything was off. Decided to give them a second day in court when they caught my eye and looked good. These are classic dill pickles in the raw. The closest to home/deli made I've had. Abundant thick slices of garlic floating around with strands of tender dill. All edible and adding to the experience. The spears are all imperfect and clearly done by hand. All this adds up to pretty much the best dill pickles I've had on second try. They are balanced and not too in your face. Grillos itialian fresh pickels gave me a time warp back in time to when i was a little kid. My uncle back in Massachusetts (where i grew up till my 20's) would take me on the weekends to Worcester Ma and we would walk the bakerys on some street i have forgotten. But they would have fresh pickel barrels and grillos has that same taste and texture. I found these in my local grocery store in Sacramento California, and the pickle chilling on the seat got my attention. I love fresh pickles thanks to my uncle! I dont like the ones that sit on the shelves waiting to be opened then tossed in the fridge. I want them already fridged, crisp and fresh with only a few months to get eating. After reading into grillos back story it got my attention. Just a young boy making pickels from his family's 100 year recipe, grabbing a wooding cart and walking to common every morning with his friends to sell them, eventually the boston red sox and whole foods wanted to feature them at there park and store. Ok hookline and sinker, im caught. Happy to have been able to try something from my home state childhood all the way across the USA in California. I have tried the fresh itialian spears, which has fresh dill, garlic slices and grape leaves in the brine. The brine in my container wasn't overaly salty at all if anything it was a bit watery but the dill and garlic was definitely there more than the salt which I really enjoyed. My kids and i do take a sip from the pickle juice so i can say that it wasn't to salty. But claussen is different in there brine which i really like with a sandwich, while grillos is more dill and garlic which i enjoyed all on its own which is they way the grillos family intended to eat it like they have for over 100 years. The package only took 4 seconds to open, simple and then closing it just a little pressure on top and it snaps back on. Not sure how it took someone mintues to open, or some to use pliers maybe they changed it since then. But it just has a little flap that says open push and snaps off thats your part to pull up from and no juice came squirting out, now from the glass jars brands turning them open i have a few times got juiced on, learning experiences have taught me to have a papertowel near by for anything that has full liquids inside. So if you have ever tried a fresh pickle in a barrel as a kid, cause i dont think there is really any left or in high demand anymore. I've been a big fan of this product for a long time buying them at Whole Foods and Costco. With delis disappearing in West LA, finding a good pickle, especially to take home, has become difficult. Grillo's has been a company known to take the time to put dill, garlic, and bay leaves into the jar, in this case a plastic tub, normally worthy of the high price point. For pickle aficionados, money is no object. But here's where the story sours and I find myself in a bit of a... In my last two tubs from Costco, I witnessed the crime, the disgrace of a bitter skin on all the pickles. What I suspect is that production has outgrown the pride. Proper aging usually prevents the skin of the cucumber from tasting bitter. It is the epic morphing from one to the other. One a mere vegetable. The other a finely fermented food group standing proudly on its own in your refrigerator. Age breaks the skin down until it and meat of the cucumber become one mouth watering, crispy, and "dillicious" experience. One bad bucket is forgivably random. Two bad buckets, points to a heinous produce crime and the downfall of a great brand who has sacrificed taste for volume. Today, my tears fall, blending with the vinegar of my former favorite. ;-))) Sorry to see you go Grillo's. It was good great while it lasted. read more

This is the first time I bought Grillo's 32 ounce container of half sour pickles and found a 3 inch strand of white hair on my first pickle! My hair is very short and is not white, so it was definitely not mine! This grossed me out to the extent that I became sick to my stomach! I thought that employees are supposed to wear hair nets and that companies perform quality control, but apparently not this company. But please be warned, that once you try them you'll never, ever be able to go back to whatever pickle you may have been thinking you loved before. You'll have to take yourself to Whole Foods, where in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, Connecticut and New York you'll find these delectable spears sold by the 32 ounce container. Shortly thereafter, even those containers will start to seem too puny with too few pickles to stave off your desire for them. You will be led, as I was today, to the Grillo's website where with glee you will find that you can get them in 4 pound buckets. 4 pounds of Grillo's pickles just might be enough to hold off the cravings! This is a natural, local product, using an old Grillo family recipe containing delicious cucumbers in a dill, garlic, grape leaves and love infused brine. Regular or spicy, take your pick. We are addicted. And fabulously, there are virtually no calories to worry about. Eat as many as your heart desires, which is going to be a lot. Visiting my brother in Philadelphia, we went on a family excursion to the local Wegman's to pick up a cart full of goodies for the Memorial Day weekend. I haven't been to a Wegman's since I was a child ((they don't have any locations in NYC-boo!)) so I was delighted to see a bunch of Costco-esque sample stations early on a Saturday. These pickles happened to be one of them! Now let me tell you about my pickle history. I have a similar past with eggs. For 95% of my life, I have hated both eggs and pickles. But, on occasion as a child, I would go through short periods where I would be IN LOVE with them and request them day after day after day. I would sit and eat an entire jar of Vlassic pickles, then not touch them for two years. Same with eggs. I've luckily since overcome my weirdness about eggs (I love them for any meal of the day prepared in any way #putaneggonit), but pickles? No way José. I would squirm if a spear or two was tossed on my plate next to a sandwich or burger. Sometimes, if pickle juice leached onto a part of the bun, I would even rip that part of the bun off and not eat it. That is how severe my aversion to pickles has been for many years. I gagged once while at a bar in Brooklyn because my friends ordered pickle-back shots. Grossssssssss. So how did I end up eating almost an entire container of these spicy pickles in a weekend? My husband sampled one at the Wegman's and said I HAD to try it. I couldn't protest faster than he had already shoved a sample into my mouth. Plus, they looked fresher than the forever-canned versions of my haunted pickle past. I was in heaven. How could something so simple be so good? I immediately grabbed another sample bite and rushed over to the refrigerated case where they had them and picked one up. I have no idea how much they cost (I didn't ask and I didn't check the receipt) but I'm guessing they were pretty pricey based on other reviewers here. I looked up several recipes I'm going to try to see if I can replicate these. Because I can foresee this as becoming a very expensive habit. -1 star for the cost and the packaging. It's crazy hard to get that lid on/off! And for a fancy, organic product, I'd like to see a more sustainable container (that also goes on/off easier). Thanks for making me, finally, love pickles! ##### Update: I had to run back to the grocery store for last-minute BBQ essentials and ran to take a glimpse of the cost of these bad boys. $6.99! Update: Finally decided to try once again and see if they got their act/receipe/quality control together. They did, the pickles in batches shipped to Denver are tasting exactly they way they used to be. Although the company is still a jerk for not issuing a simple refund after providing coupons that only bought more of the inedible, over salted batches, they've clearly responded to the issue and after about 6 months they're back in good shape. read more

I had the pleasure of finding these delicious gems at my local BJs and im am so glad i did! I am actually on my second bucket in 2 weeks, they are super fresh and all the flavors are well balanced. They have a great dill flavor with just the right amout of vinager and gsrlic bite. Oh and that delicious sliced garlic that are in the bottom that i cant wait to get to :). Myself and my whole family love these pickles and i have already supplied samples to my coworkes and they no just where to find them. On the real this place makes me laugh in the best way. It's like such a funny and quaint concept to me for some reason. The cart sells water, or pickles. These two things aren't at all like each other, you should have no problem deciding which of the two you need. No one buys pickles when they're thirsty and no one buys water when they...want pickles I guess? I don't even eat pickles really, I just think this is a neat little cart. The pricing is also fantastic. Both items are $1, that's 2 pickles, or 500ml of water for $1. Amazing. No one sells water for a reasonable price in the common. Stay thirsty. read more

Had the pleasure of experiencing some Grillo's pickled good at the SoWa Open Market a few weeks ago and I was left both stunned and smiling. It was by far one of the best pickles I've ever had - I had previously noticed their stand in Park Street but wasn't really in the mood to check it out - turns out it was a big mistake on my part. My friend Dan M. and I ordered up some spicy pickle spears and some of their pickled green tomatoes. A couple of bucks were exchanged and then we bit right in - each item was wrapped in a small sheet of aluminum foil - no frills - simple and effective. First, we bit into the spicy spears, which had a nice kick to it and which was both very tasty and crisp. Then the pickled, green tomato which was also tasty, tangy and just delicious. The stand was very modest looking, the staff wearing these customized Celtics-looking jerseys which advertise their brand. They weren't particularly friendly or anything but I don't really care because they seem to let their product do all of the talking and being as good as it is, I was very happy. I'm going to have to acquire some at Dave's Fresh Pasta at some point, I've heard that they carry some of it. read more

Slow day at work so time to work on my SoWa food truck rally write-ups. Any time I would find myself in the commons area I would stroll through the area around the Park Street T stop and look for the pickle stand. I must have had the worst luck ever because I never came across them. It would always end in a sad decent into the oldest underground subway station in America, pickleless. Not taking this very well I sank into a deep depression, the kind that you get when your puppy runs away. I email Mr Grillo asking him when I would be able to find him pickle suit or not. My problem seemed to be looking for him Sundays. He let me know the nice people at whole foods like his pickles and they sell them by the jar so off I went. Hidden in some way back corner of the whole foods on Washington St in Brighton were 2 lonely plastic jars of pickles. After looking all over the store finding plenty of other pickles I assumed these were not the pickles I sought. I spun the container around to see one very happy green pickle kicking it in a beach chair, YAY! But then I saw something I was not expecting to see on the container, "HOT" I froze for a moment not knowing if I wanted a spicy pickle. I had come this far there was no turning back. They were paid for and I scrambled into the parking lot. This couldn't wait I had to try this spicy pickle. There must have been some kind of divine intervention that day because the hot pickle is exactly what was needed. Since that day Ive been going through jars at the breakneck speed of one a week. Refilled this weekend at SoWa. I also ran over to the produce and bought some pickling cucumbers and tossed them in some old brine.
