    Crispy chicken sopapilla
    Oliver H.

The company I work for hired this food truck and it didn't disappoint. All funny jokes regarding the naming aside, the food was delicious. There was a limited menu but the crispy chicken sopapilla was great. The chicken wasn't really crispy since there was a layer of a tartar like sauce on top but the meat was cooked well, the pickle spear was very generous, the slaw was fresh, and the sopapilla was also fresh and fluffy (reminded me of a naan). The service was friendly and quick, got my food within a few minutes of ordering. Would definitely revisit if I saw them again in the future!

Too much stuffing - said no one ever! Stopped by Papi's at the cambridge food truck festival and tried their steak and cheese. The shell was warm (pita like consistency but softer) stuffed with lettuce, shaved steak and topped off with a really great cheese sauce! Solid value for the price. They also have Sopapillas for those looking for something on the sweeter side.

Paid this truck a visit during the 2017 Salem Food Truck Fest! I'm glad I did! Papi's... welcome to my list of all-time Massachusetts favorites. I'm the foodie in the family... which means I am the one who ventures out to try more unusual options. Still, I saw this truck, turn to the fam and say: I have never heard of Sopapillas before. Well, we were at the festival to explore and had to try these. The sopapilla is a fried "pocket" of bread, stuffed with, in this case, deliciousness! Had the opportunity to try the Al Pastor (marinated pork) and the Bulgogi (which was very similar to beef teriyaki). At first, I thought Bulgogi was a misnomer, but research showed "bulgogi" simply means: thin, marinated slices of meat, grilled. Now, if you read my reviews, you know one of the things I am always blabbering about is balance...and these sopapillas hit the nail on the head! Let's start with the breading: the "pocket" itself was delightfully thin and fried perfectly. For dough that's fried, it wasn't dripping in oil and was neither soggy nor crisp as a potato chip. In light of this consistency, it holds all the ingredients spectacularly well being as thin as it is. In terms of the filling: They did not skimp on the meat! Neither the Al Pastor nor the Bulgogi was facing a tragic shortage of meat. At the same time, it was not overloaded to the point where nothing else was allowed to shine. The meat was tender, hot, and flavorful! Compared to the many times I have had something "Al Pastor" in other places, this was on point. Likewise, with the bulgogi, I have tried multitudinous different teriyaki sauces in an attempt to perfect my own, and the sauce they use is one of the best. The veggies are fresh and crunchy. They added a whole new dimension of flavor, whose fresh crunchiness beautifully contrasts the meat. Absolutely looking forward to finding this truck, and paying it a visit again (and again)

In my office, we call Wednesdays 'Sopapilla Wednesday' because that's when the Papi's truck is at City Hall Plaza. The way my coworkers talked about these sopapillas, my expectations were pretty high and of course I Yelp'd them beforehand. These handmade stuffed pockets of deliciousness were not a let down. I was nervous to get the Bulgogi Rib Eye Sopapilla given mixed reviews about the quality consistency, but the pocket I received was delicious and warm on the inside while crunchy on the outside. The kimchi slaw perfect but I wish it was mixed throughout the pocket, not just sitting on the top. I have had a sweet stuffed sopapilla as well. I wanted the Banana Nutella with Whipped Cream but they didn't have anymore bananas so they were willing to accommodate me and let me have a Nutella, Fluff, & Whipped Cream sopapilla instead. SO GOOD because the warm inside of the pocket melted everything to a perfect gooey consistency. Wolfed it down in 5 minutes and shamelessly got a little whipped cream on my jeans.

Papi's Sopapillas was nearby at an event I was attending so I decided to try them out. The que was quite long so I decided to come back after the que was shorter. Unfortunately, this was a mistake on my part as the savory options were depleted upon my return. With limited sweet options, I went with the doughnut style sopapillas. A sopapillas is essentially a fried pastry. This "doughnut" sopapillas was a fried piece of dough, with a simple syrup dressing and topped with crumbled Oreos. And I checked and they were indeed Oreos and not Hydrox. The sopapillas itself is chewy, a little rubbery, hot off the grease and has a fried doughy, oily taste. However, the syrup is slightly coarse in texture and has a slight staleness. This dessert was very uninventive not only in presentation but also taste. I really would have appreciated if they could have gone the extra mile and make the Oreos from scratch. But honestly, the Oreo is completely out of place here. The sopapillas itself has a bland oily flavor, so combining that with the Oreo cookies and the syrup creates a muddled flavor. I'm getting the cheap cocoa taste of Oreo cookie, combined with the sweetness of the Oreo filling, stale syrup, and the oily taste of the fried dough. This is not really a satisfying dessert. I would have preferred if they just gave me a piece of fried dough with some powdered sugar. Forget the Oreos and syrup. Maybe the nutella sopapillas is better, but I can only speak for the one I ordered. I understand this was towards the end of the night and they were out a lot of food, but that doesn't excuse having a menu item that is sub-par. I would not recommend ordering this menu item if you visit Papi's.

Bulgogi With Kimchi Fusion (unstuffed) - April 2018
    YC L.

Checked out this new food truck around the South Station area because it looked like delicious hot pockets! We didn't know what Sopapillas were but I'm glad that we tried it! Sopapillas tastes like a fluffy fried dough and this food truck would use it like a pita bread. Average food truck price and it's quite delicious! Definitely a treat once in a while - i highly doubt that it's very healthy. Bulgogi With Kimchi Fusion (unstuffed) - it came with chips and coleslaws. I really loved the coleslaws and the bulgogi, but the kimchi wasn't marinated for long enough. You get more food with the unstuffed version but it definitely takes away the Sopapillas experience. I would recommend getting this stuffed.

    BULGOGI KIMCHI FUSION

Delicious!! My coworkers and I love Papis stuffed sopapillas I think we've started a lunch time tradition. BULGOGI KIMCHI FUSION STEAK AND CHEESE (that homemade papi sauce) NUTELLA BANANA FLUFFER NUTTER And they OVER STUFF the hell out of those sopapillas. So definitely go hungry lol

That is not kimchi and that is not bulgogi. It's a mouth full of salt and pepper flakes.

I was really excited about the bulgogi stuffed sopapilla with kimchi slaw. I grew up eating bulgogi and make a sandwich similar to this. What I ended up with was a sopapilla stuffed with over cooked and heavily salted meat and bland cabbage with pepper flakes. I think cream cheese was in there somewhere? Couldn't taste it but the salt was pretty overpowering. Other than salt and a little heat from the pepper there was nothing else to taste. This was incredibly disappointing and it seems like no one at this food truck has ever tasted bulgogi or kimchi.

I remember when I first heard about this event. My initial thought was "oh look another way NYC and…read moreBoston can compete". Actually, I thought it was just another event New York City could dominate Boston at. But that's just the New Yorker in me. I kid, I kid. I've got nothing but love for Boston's food trucks. I was mostly interested in what trucks New York was going to come with as lets be honest the only food trucks I ever saw in NYC were the halal and hotdog trucks on the streets. And let's just say I was taught never to trust street meat. Good thing the website is good at listing the trucks and their websites so you can scope out the competition beforehand. Surprised to see almost all of them had websites. The first time this event was held in Dewey Square. Contained completely on the farmer's market island. My god it was a mess of lines and the wait for some of the trucks was horrendous. People had to plan strategically in their groups in order to hit as many of the trucks they wanted to try. Food truck competitions are serious business and apparently you call out a competition between NY and Boston you're going to pull a crowd to show some love for their hometown. It's understandable... even if the longest lines were from two NY trucks. The second time around the planners did a lot better location wise. They spread the trucks out along the less trafficked Greenway. Thank god they learned from last year. Also line control was handled a lot better. No funky zigzag across 4 different truck areas here. And there was also plenty of grass or curb to sit and eat. Now for the food. This competition has a habit of bringing an array of different cuisines. I had a plan to visit two trucks this time. Morrocan truck Comme Ci Comme Ca and Indian Chinese hybrid Momos & Buns. Most of the NY trucks had a limited 'Throwdown' menu. While I did pick up the kofka couscous from Comme Ci I would have really liked to try a few of their appetizers that I noticed on their website. The couscous was delicious and I think this was the first time I ever really tried Moroccan cuisine so I don't have anything to compare it to. But I'll definitely hunt down the truck when next I'm in NY. Momos I never got to. There was quite the line and I was not that patient. But while I was walking the area I stumbled upon the Cupcake Crew and tried their maple bacon cupcake. Wow, that was incredible. Although I think bacon makes most things taste better. In all it was a pleasant day with delicious food a relaxed atmosphere and I can't wait until next year's.

It takes less than a minute to go from ordering your food to having the container in hand. Lunch breaks are precious, especially if it's 45 minutes long. Less time spent waiting is more time spent enjoying the blissful break from work. This is to say nothing of inclement weather! Then there is the food itself! I ordered a large chicken on rice with adds-ons of crisp onions and tomato+cuke. The chicken was tender and nicely seasoned, plus there was more than an ample amount. I always root for a place that isn't stingy with meat! The rice was forgettable, but considering this isn't an expensive sushi restaurant where every grain gets a mani-pedi before being sacrificed to humans. As a starch/carb element, the yellow rice was A-OK for the dish. The crisp onions were something I could have done without. Nothing against them; they felt unnecessary for me (not necessarily for you). Meanwhile, the tomato+cuke added some welcome freshness to the dish! Next time I will try to get half-rice, half-salad as my base... if not possible, I will get the tomato+cuke again, even though it isn't free. While ordinarily, I would pillory a place for charging $2.10 for a bit of veggie, though I appreciate this is what stops people from ordering rice and then getting five kilos of diced veggies on top of that! This is good and fine and would be a 4-star review. I would dust my hands off and get on with my day... but then there are the sauces. And let me tell you... sauces and I go together like milk and cookies! When my Uni had chicken nugget night, some would get a mountain of nuggies. Me? Five or six nuggies and every sauce/condiment the university had on tap! But I digress... the sauces added flavor, tied everything together, added additional moisture, and even played nice with one another! Did I mention sauces are self-service? The mint-cilantro-jalapeno was refreshing, flavorful, and had just a little kick! If you like a little heat, this might be great for you but proceed with caution (protecting myself from your lawyers!) The medium/"hot" actually brought some heat! And this is coming from someone for whom Tabasco tastes like salty vinegar! I dare not try the extra hot... I have high heat tolerance, but not that high! The flavor was okay, not mind-blowing, but combined with the creamy garlic, it was heaven! The creaminess took the edge away from the heat and added a whole new dynamic in texture. Plus, my Slavic heart loves garlic! Finally, the BBQ: I found this sauce unremarkable, similar to the BBQ sauce I have in my own fridge. However, I also realize that only some people like heat (or garlic), and I believe food is for everyone. Will absolutely be ordering from this truck again and again as long as it is nearby!
