As soon as October first arrives every year, my wife gets excited since it's her birthday month.... but for me, I get excited because I know Stone Crab season is right around the corner. October 15 is the magic day... and before the date even arrives my wife and I are already talking about our yearly Stone Crab day trip across Alligator Alley from the east coast. Of course we can get Stone Crabs locally to our location (we live on the east coast)... there are plenty of options from fish markets to plenty of restaurants including some famous ones like Joes Stone Crab; can even go register some traps and get them ourselves.... But there is something about visiting the quirky but charming town of Everglades City... It's a small town with lots of fishing and some tourism (airboats and the Everglades National Park)... It's like a hotspot for fresh Stone Crabs and Grimms is one of our favorite places. We'll eat in town but we ALWAYS make our way over to Grimm's to get load up a few pounds into our cooler and return home. What I really appreciate about Grimm's is beyond the delicious sweet tasting crabmeat... it's the hospitality. The guys that have helped us recently and in the past is always the same thing... quiet, laid back kinda of guys but ask one question and they are making suggestions and eager to please; they generally want you to enjoy your purchase and return in the future. Our visit the other day was no different... we requested only a portion of our order to be cracked and he right away explained to eat the cracked within a day and how to store the others and how long they'd be good for... he didn't nickel and dime us when we asked for ice; I think he skipped charging us for the Mustard Sauce since we ordered so many pounds. And of course.... most importantly, the freshness and taste... let's put it this way, Grimm's has it's own boats and traps. Once they take the claws and return the crab to the sea to live another day, they return to the docks and cook the claws immediately and pack on ice immediately afterwards; and then they are sold ! GRIMM'S is as fresh as it can be !

Make sure you buy one of their stone crab crackers

Best stone crabs in south fl. Make sure you get one of their crackers. Save time and keeps crabs fresh if you're traveling.

Located near the end the end of the half dirt half paved DuPont road is Grimms Stone Crab, a little out of the way market specializing in sales of fresh local seafood but more particularly only stone crab. I've stopped by here on several occasions but have only made purchases here once since they seem to have the strangest of irregular hours of operations which may in part be due to the varying crab seasons or unpredictability of catches. There is not a place to eat here but you can get fresh stone crab at price slightly lower but not much lower than city super market prices, have them cracked (you would be wise to have Grimms crack them for you), grab some mustard sauce, head home or merely enjoy a stone crab picnic in your car.

    10lbs Grimms Medium stone crabs!

The stone crab claws are fresh and the service is great. They're priced reasonably too! We'll be coming back.

The stone crabs come right off the boat, we got two pounds of mediums to share and they were packed with meat.

It is a casual seafood restaurant located on the Barron River which connects to the Gulf. There are a few parking spaces in front otherwise it's free street parking where you can find it. There is a school across the street so parking can fill quickly. Most of the seating area is outside so you enter and then find an empty table. Menus are on the table and then a server arrives and takes your order. If the weather is right sitting next to the water is a nice calming experience. I sat in a screen enclosed covered patio. My order was for the fried grouper sandwich with french fries and cole slaw for $27. Yes grouper is expensive. The meal arrived about 10 minutes later. The fried fish fillet sitting in on the long bun was HUGE and it looked delicious too. I was very happy and then I started to eat it. Everything with that sandwich was excellent except its taste. It was the batter for me. The taste wasn't bad at all but it didn't stand out to me. Whatever batter they use to fry with is not my favorite and that is the only reason I don't give a 4 score here. The french fries were excellent in taste and showed me that Triad's puts effort in making them. Also the slaw was cool and a nice palate cleanser. The table service was friendly and attentive. I like Triad's and would be happy to return. But I would probably try something else on the menu that isn't fried. The batter taste is my opinion and I'm sure others will disagree. Another fact about eating here is that they charge 3.5% more for credit cards use. With an iced tea, tax and tip, my lunch cost $40...kind of expensive for Everglades City, FL.

I wanted to love this place, but it was honestly just ok. The location by the water is nice. The decor was very interesting, kind of like a chaotic shabby chic meets Old Florida. We ordered our food at the counter and then took our number to a table. You don't pay when you order, which was interesting, but the server who takes care of you brings you a bill at the end. Kind of an odd way of doing things, but it worked. The staff was incredibly friendly and hard working. The food was just meh. I ordered the stone crab lunch. It came with 6 claws, chilled and already cracked (thank God because those things are ridiculously tough!) and a mustard sauce. I ordered the onion straws for my side, and I surely did not expect the enormous basket of lukewarm onions that made it to the table. Other dishes at the table that looked better than mine: shrimp and grits, chicken tender basket (kids), and fried catfish. I dunno, maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but I felt like they really took a lot of pride in their stone crab and I just thought the dish was boring. Everyone got a salad with their meal and it was just weird. Like, great mix of greens, but then they just dumped some pico de gallo on top. I could've lived my whole life without that salad.

We also had planned to go back with a group later this year. First, even though we asked to be seated indoors, they insisted we sit outside. There were only two others at the restaurant. The inside was empty but the owner later explained they were cleaning it. I thought the prices were high and they offered no lunch specials. But, going on prior Yelp reviews, I was led to believe the food was above par. Sadly, the food was OK but not great, and not worth the price. To top it off, they automatically add a 20% tip. I know restaurants do that with large parties but certainly inappropriate for a party of two. Service was good but I don't like to be forced to pay an automatic 20% tip. Tipping is done based on how good your service is -- so I would get stuck paying 20% even if service was awful? What I found to be off putting were the responses from the owners to reviewers; particularly, on Google. They accuse everyone who posts a bad review of posting a fake review and/or they got extremely defensive. Wow! How about a little humility and attempts to fix things. Sure wish I had seen the Google reviews prior to making my trip to Everglades City. I chose this place due to the great Yelp reviews I read. I should have checked all of the reviews because the bad ones were way more accurate.
