We were recently on vacation in Naples and drove down to Everglades City to check it out since it has been years since I was there. We also had planned to go back with a group later this year. [[HIGHLIGHT]]First, even though we asked to be seated indoors, they insisted we sit outside. There were only two others at the restaurant. The inside was empty but the owner later explained they were cleaning it[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. I thought the prices were high and they offered no lunch specials. But, going on prior Yelp reviews, I was led to believe the food was above par. Sadly, the food was OK but not great, and not worth the price. To top it off, they automatically add a 20% tip. I know restaurants do that with large parties but certainly inappropriate for a party of two. Service was good but I don't like to be forced to pay an automatic 20% tip. Tipping is done based on how good your service is -- so I would get stuck paying 20% even if service was awful? What I found to be off putting were the responses from the owners to reviewers; particularly, on Google. They accuse everyone who posts a bad review of posting a fake review and/or they got extremely defensive. Wow! How about a little humility and attempts to fix things. Sure wish I had seen the Google reviews prior to making my trip to Everglades City. I chose this place due to the great Yelp reviews I read. I should have checked all of the reviews because the bad ones were way more accurate. read more

What a treat Captain Morgan's was! My husband had the Cuban burger with fries which he said was "unique and delicious" I had the shrimp in enchilado sauce and it was even better than I expected! We could not wait to come back to Everglades city and enjoy another meal here! Happy to see the same family is still there. You are treated like family the minute you walk in. The menu represents what they enjoy eating and take their time explaining to you their favorites. We loved the shrimp tostone appetizer they make this special red sauce called enchilado and feel we could put that on anything. It's that good! My husband had the lobster enchilada and it was pretty good portion. His favorite also is their black beans. I enjoyed the chicken and the shrimp. However I must warn you. They do use a lot of onions, butter and seasoning so if you're not a fan of that ask him to go light will definitely be back again and love to support family on businesses. We had the pleasure of dining at Captain Morgan's Seafood Grill in Everglades City last night and it was FANTASTIC! We ordered the shrimp stuffed tostones, medium stone crab claws and the absolute show stopper...the Seafood Enchilada which had the most divine, flavorful broth and was spilling over with fresh seafood. Absolutely one of the best seafood dishes we have ever had (and we are from Miami where good seafood is a staple). Everything we tried was DELICIOUS and NOTEWORTHY! The service was attentive and friendly. It was truly lovely to meet Captain Morgan, his beautiful wife and son who chatted with us and shared their family story. This was hands down the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. Captain Morgan's Seafood Grill in Everglades City completely failed on every level. We walked in and had to wait just to be seated, then waited another 20 minutes before anyone even came to take our drink order. When the drinks finally showed up (after yet another 20 minutes), they still managed to mess that up--only bringing 4 out of 5 drinks. It only got worse from there. Our food took about 25 minutes, and when it finally arrived, it was incomplete. Multiple items were missing, and we had to keep tracking down staff just to get what we originally ordered. For a place that wasn't even that busy, this was unacceptable. The service was beyond terrible. There were around six employees, but only two seemed to be doing anything, and even they were doing a poor job. When we tried to address the missing items, the staff was rude, dismissive, and acted like we were the problem. Instead of fixing mistakes, they argued with us. To make things even sketchier, the restaurant appears to be using Captain Morgan branding without any clear authorization, which raises serious questions about how the place is run. The worst part was the bill. They argued with us about it and even tried to pressure us into tipping after providing some of the worst service I've ever experienced. Tipping should reflect service, and this service didn't deserve one. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Save your time, money, and frustration and go literally anywhere else. read more

You don't need to take a trip to Cuba to taste authentic Cuban cusine. Where people may have seen as an obsscle Captain Morgan saw as an opportunity. A family run business, the food was delicious. The alligator bites appetizer was fried in avacado oil - amazing. The fish/chips and grouper sandwich were the best I have ever eaten. Magnificent 5 Stars!! We came to Captain Morgan's after a nearby tour and we are SO happy we did. It's been our best meal all week. The food is so delicious. I will be dreaming about the lobster dish in Captain's sauce until my next visit to the area. Everything was so good - we had gator bites, conch fritters, grouper, pork chops, lobster, and dessert! He owns the fishing boat his brother operates; brother fishes off the coast of Clearwater FL. Clean fishing for best flavor! Manny uses avocado oil, so the food is so healthy! I had the grouper sandwich; the grouper not being dunked in batter and fried to oblivion, but rather upholding the delicate, natural flavor of the fish with a lime/garlic marinade. A bit of a drive, but it was a nice experience. Super nice people run the place. Seems like it's a family owned and operated restaurant. Their menu is not miles long, but there are enough choices for most appetites. The prices do seem to be on the steep side. One of my kids got the pork dish and I feel it was literally one pork chop cut up into pieces. We ordered a seafood "thingy" that feeds two @~$80. Two lobster tails, a blue crab, shrimp(s), scallops?, and stone crab (which was admittedly not fresh, but frozen since it wasn't season). I do not recall having had stone crab before, but we felt IT was a bit funky (as in it had a pretty particular smell and taste... which was not to our liking). The place also houses an ice cream parlor + their flan and coffee were pretty great. Very laid back environment and, to reiterate, VERY nice staff. On our way to Everglades National Park my wife and I spotted a delightful one-off restaurant. It was getting warm, and the light blue building was inviting, but when the family owners met us at the door we felt truly special. The food was authentic and delicious, with several local seafood options and many wonderful Spanish dishes to choose from. My food was acceptable but the many negatives contributed to an overall 2-star rating. I was not expecting this based on other reviews. Seafood and Cuban, sounds good. So did I get seafood? No, the prices many of which were in the low to mid $30s for most entrees seemed way out of line for for the style of the place: sitting outside on a busy street corner with plastic tables and chairs, piles of napkins and condiment bottles on table, paper placemats, more suited to fast food I thought. So I got the Cuban Burger, made from a blend of ground beef, pork, and chorizo. With a generous portion of caramelized onions and potato stix inside. And a special sauce which one of the staff (I think owner and matriarch of this family-run business) brought over, encouraged me to try, and returned soon to inquire if I used it and liked it. I assured her I did. Good, and definitely more interesting than an average burger due to the blend of meats, especially the chorizo. Could have used something else though; maybe something tangy like pickles? And the fries were good too, batter-fried, on the big side, and crispy. Cuban. So a mojito seemed in order. What? you only have them premade in cans? Umm, no. What's up with that? Another place I checked out earlier had the same deal so I wonder: could this town have some crazy blue laws enacted by conservative crazies? Must research this. So I instead got sangria, which I was assured was home-made. It was refreshing but not really that good. Overly sweet and pretty skimpy on the wine. The desserts sounded interesting, all with a Cuban flair, and not just the usual flan and tres leche. But sadly I had no room. I probably could have managed an affogato and now I wish I had tried it. Service was weird. I never did figure out who my waiter was and I think neither did they. I gave my order to one, then another came by. He didn't know if the first took the order so I ordered again. And delivered by a third. All fine, until nearing the end. I had just received my second sangria when my real waiter (the matriarch) asked if wanted anything else, dessert perhaps, bill and credit card machine at the ready. Not in any hurry-up-and-finish way, but it was a bit off-putting. The place was not busy, plenty of empty tables so it's not like they needed the table. I replied I was going to nurse my drink and relax for a bit. She assured me, take my time, and it seemed sincere. But I decided to pay my bill then and there - she already had the credit machine in hand. If this had been done differently they may well have made another $8 off me for a dessert. Finally, one thing that disturbed me perhaps more than it should: I was perusing other Yelp reviews while I was finishing my sangria and I saw that somebody had left a poor review, complaining, among other things, about overcooked shrimp. The owner (Magy) wrote a rebuttal, very defensive and said "There is no such thing of overcooked shrimp." That's patently false; overcooked seafood of any kind is a disaster. If they really believe that I am so glad I did not try one of their seafood entrees. The staff is weird and unprofessional. They were unorganized and didnt seem to care about their tables. Wow! Best grouper blackened sandwich I've ever had, no bread as I'm gluten free. They made nice alternative suggestions for gluten free sides. I would give it a 4.5 so I went with 5 instead of 4 stars... I ordered the grouper and added 6 jumbo shrimp. Everything was really good - shrimp was perfectly cooked and grouper was cooked well built not perfect - still was delicious. The black bean soup was very very good as were the vegetables. The tres leches cake dessert was a 10/10 - absolutely delicious along with a cappuccino. Everglades City is a bit out of the way so the prices seem high but the prices are very much in line with every other restaurant around so no complaints there. The son of the owners was my waiter and he did a fantastic job - extremely sweet kid. I have long been an eater of seafood so I know how different fish can be cooked every time - I think I could easily go back and it be perfectly cooked - and it was pretty delicious as it was. I would definitely suggest stopping here if driving by - good beer selection also. If you aren't too hungry they have the amazing Tres Leches Cake and very good coffee/espresso drinks! read more
