I'm not one to leave reviews anymore but I had to defend this Hawaiian restaurant. Sometimes I feel that people on the mainland don't really understand what it takes to have real ono in front of them. I've been eating here since it was a food cart and I fell in love with how tasty and authentic everything was. Good poke is hard to come by and this place does it the old fashion way. Since it became a restaurant things have been even busier. Long lines outside (even longer than the cart), varied hours and limited availability on food items. While those things may inconvenience some customers, it is actually a huge reality to eating out in Portland. Good food is hard to come by, you have to go at the right time sometimes. Trust me I wish some of my favorite restaurants were open later but I'm not going to complain to them as that is something decided by the owners not me. This is a hard concept for people to understand especially if hungry and not expecting this. I've seen reviews from so many people like Chad just being so rude to these business owners because of the volume of their business. The point is, if you aren't willing to work for the ono then the ono isn't for you. Because let me tell you, there have been several times where I want to go here but it's either sold out or closed but it doesn't piss me off. It makes me want to try harder to get to it because it really is that worth it. The portions are huge and the food is some of the most authentic I've had. This felt like the most authentic Hawaiian style poke we've had in Portland. Its just a great portion of well seasoned fish and rice. No fancy adds- corn, tofu, etc. Its just the way I like poke- fresh, good plentiful fish. I'm taking off a star for a few reasons. One its pricey. I know poke is expensive, but this seemed pricier than most. Two, the restaurant felt less than clean. I'm sure its fine and my fish was certainly fresh, but the restaurant didn't exactly invoke confidence in its cleanliness. Third, the rice was overcooked. They do use a lotta oil and butter, but if it's supposed to have a lot of those, it better be good - in this case it definitely was! Great local gem - bustling with eager eaters, their menu is a mix of Hawaiian and Filipino eats, all served cooked fresh to order and in beautiful hearty portions. The food looked and smelled great but what I couldnt get past was the shrimp still had the entire shell not just the tail. I took a big bite being aware not to eat the tail and was suprised by the fact they must've just defrosted the shrimp and threw the whole thing in batter. I spent the next 10 minutes taking all the shell off myself which meant I was also pulling all the breading off leaving plain shrimp behind. I was pretty disappointed I'm willing to try something not shrimp related from the menu it was just so disappointing to pay so much for what I got. Can you guys come to LA? I have no idea how found this place, but I am so glad I did. They had a combo option with multiple types of proteins, but I went with Ono Chicken and Spicy Ahi Poke. It comes with heaping 3 scoops of rice and macaroni salad. When the waiter gave me the food I didn't expect it to be that heavy! It felt like a few pounds of food! To my surprise, they had to put a RUBBER BAND on the lid to keep it close. I already know that it was gonna be bomb. Ono chicken, super crispy/juice, and slightly sweet. The poke super flavorful, fresh, and light. Which is a perfect complement to the ono chicken. The rice was perfectly cooked and the macaroni salad was yummy as well. Heard about this place from my cousin, so I stopped by and tried it with my brother. We got there right at opening and there was already a line, which means this is a good spot. We we're invited to sit wherever we wanted and we sat in the back outdoor area. It was a nice setting and we were decently distanced from other customers. The waiter was very helpful and made some recommendations. My brother got the chicken ono, I got the lechon kawali, and we both also got musubi. We thought about ordering a third entree just to try more things, but good thing we didn't. They served us in take out boxes which couldn't even come close to closing since the servings were so large. The meals come with rice, whatever meat you chose, and mac salad. I don't order chicken often, but the chicken ono I tried from my brother's meal was very juicy and flavorful, not dry at all. The lechon kawali was amazing - it is pork belly. I was very surprised at all the textures from crispy, to tender, to fatty. The musubi was decent. It didn't have any extra sauces or too much seasoning in it, so order it if that's how you like it. We had came from the gym and were starving. Even then, I only ate about a third of the meal. I had it for a second meal and by the time I had to leave town, I still had about a meal's worth leftover. Easily one of the best Hawaiian food spots in the Portland area. I've been spending a lot of time in the Hawaiian islands and know exactly what I like. The portions of my meal here were amazing, HUGE! I had the surf and turf plate meal which consisted of kalbi ribs, Mac salad, rice and spicy ahi poke. The poke was seriously on point, tasted just like I've had in Hawaii. The only thing that I didn't love about this plate was the kalbi- I'm huge kalbi lover and this here was entirely too sweet for my liking. Tasted good!
