I ate at Grinders the other night for the first time in quite a long time and it was still just as delicious, greasy, and divey as I remember it being! We decided to grab a bite here before going over to the Border Brewery across the street. We ordered a "Le Hog" pizza in the 18 inch pie; which, was a perfectly sized pizza for two hungry people...two of us ate three large slices a piece! The "Le Hog" is a white sauce pizza covered with tons of different connotations of yummy pork products, like ham, bacon, pepperoni, etc. Grinders has a plethora of unique specialty pizzas that I have tried in the past, the one that comes to mind is the Bengal Tiger Pizza. This pizza has loads of Indian flavors topped with tandori chicken. It was really hard for me to pass up on one of Grinders amazing Philly cheesesteaks, they make them just like they do classically in Philly, PA, wit wiz and all! Next time I go I am definitely going to grab a Philly wit wiz! How could someone just not absolutely love this classic Kansas City dive bar and eatery? They have a good selection of food that is both tasty and greasy; the beer selection is tops as well! You don't go there for the service or because you are on a diet, (you really shouldn't go there if you are on a diet!) but you do go there for the hipster atmosphere, the outstanding dive bar food, and the great beer selection. During the summer Grinders can be the epicenter of big concerts that are taking place on the huge back patio area during the Crossroad's "First Fridays". They do a "bomb" option for most any item on the menu, costs like 3-4 dollars.. it's tater tots, chili, chives and cheese whiz... we had them "bomb" our pizza with that setup and it was one of the best pizzas I've ever eaten!! I stopped in there mid day today and it was the worst service I've ever had. Ever. I had to get up and go find someone to take my order, then when I was done I had to go find someone to get my tab. Meanwhile I'm sitting at the bar the whole time as 3 different girls walked past me again and again and not one of them ever looked over or said hi or asked if I needed anything. 10/10 the worst service. This review is long over due. My wife and I were in KC for a conference . We have visited this outstanding establishment many times sine it opened. Every time we are in KC we make a point to have a meal and a beer here. He have had cheesesteak and the pizza . Oh, and beer. On our last visit the waitress carded me , but not my wife. We LOVE Grinders and have gone there more times than I can count but today we went for lunch. We sat down at an empty table and it was dirty. No other space was open. The waitress came by, put the menus down and asked what we would like to drink. I asked her if she wouldn't mind wiping the table down...it had food crumbs, salt and sticky drink residue (again no big deal but would like it cleaned). Do not come here if you are super hungry, in a hurry or in the mood to slap someone. You'll stay hungry, you'll be late and you'll go to jail for assault. BUT. If you 'could eat' (as in, 'I could eat...'), have nowhere to be at a certain time and have taken some chill pills, you'll be all set. I came to Grinders, hungry, in a hurry and my default food is 'slap' so... yeah. This wasn't looking like it would end well. But, 4 stars, so you know it's all good. Okay, back to the journey. I stepped up to the counter and the guys behind it were more interested in talking amongst themselves than helping me. I don't look like the typical Grinders patron (as in, no one working or eating looked remotely like me). I felt out of place and being rendered invisible certainly didn't help that. Thankfully, the lone woman of the joint did what the guys had an inability to do: she smiled, waited on me, answered my questions, and took my order. Point of order: I hope she runs the joint. If she doesn't, she needs to. So, the cool lady with the interesting ink helped me out and then she was off to do more super hero things. Unfortunately for me, the Legion of Doom entered back in and I was back to wait wait waiting for my three slices. I noticed that some slices were boxed up and set atop the oven. I noticed other people came and went (with food). I noticed that I had broken a beer bottle and was ready to attack... and then I noticed that she came back. She took one look at the situation and figured everything out. "How long have these slices been ready? Oh, man, these are yours. Do you want new ones? I'm sorry for this." I declined. I was already late. I couldn't spend anymore time in Satan's waiting room. She said something to the LoD, they scattered, she gave me my slices, apologized again, and I left. So all that and 4 stars? The Bengal Pizza: green sauce, CRAB MEAT, tandoori chicken, and cilantro. Incredible. The BBQ Chicken was as good as I suspected (I mean, BBQ + Kansas City = yes). But, I kept coming back to that Bengal. And as amazing as the pizza was... I doubt I'd ever come back. Paying money for a service should not be that much work. It just shouldn't. The Chili Bomb Pie and the Philly Cheese Steak is what we came here for and we were not disappointed by these choices. They were both very good. The Cheese Steak, as Mathew W. says, is "dripping with juices that are bad for you in the best way". Well said and true. We each got halves even though it would have been cheaper to get a whole and split it. We didn't get the whole because they add a dollar "sharing fee" and there would be some territory disputes if we had to split it up ourselves. The pizza had a thin crispy crust that I enjoyed. We found the best way to eat this particular pizza is folded. We got the 10inch and agreed that it was the best choice for us since we were pairing with a sandwich. The other size option is 18inch. They said they had sweet tea and I ordered it but it tasted old and sour. So I traded for an unsweetened tea and it was very weak and had a strange flavor. Good enough to wash down pizza with though. I have to order mushrooms if I see them on the menu...lo and behold. We had already eaten the pie and sandwich and still had a little room left. We tracked down the waitress, ordered and they arrived much later... cold. Not house made by any means... just regular frozen and fried. The service was slow... had to flag her down when we needed something because she did not check in with us. She would sometimes walk quickly by and say something really fast. Near as we could figure she was giving us time updates on the pizza, but we couldn't really hear or understand her. To be fair she seemed to be one of only two servers running the place. They use plastic utensils and paper plates. I guess it's better than Styrofoam. I was happy with the main food choices and will return to try more pizza flavors. We sat in the back near the patio, but inside. There were tables and chairs and also booth-like seats that were actually old airplane and car seats. The garage sale looking decor really gives you something else to focus on while waiting for your food. It should be said that Stretch was there and was very friendly to the customers. Oh and the parking isn't so bad. They offer street parking, but there is a parking lot directly in front of the building that is open to the public. This was at 1pm on a Saturday. read more

As a KC resident, Grinder's is a semi-frequent stop, like it or not. It just seems to be "the" place to go in KC, especially on First Friday's. That's really too bad, because overall, Grinder's is pretty mediocre on all levels. Even in the areas where they should be shining, they fail. Every time I have been here, the draught beer is skunky, stale, and just plain rancid. You'd think they'd have fresh Boulevard Wheat keg tapped, but I guess not. This is a commonplace occurance across several visits (I've since learned to order bottled beer only at Grinder's). "But wait, Jacob. What brought you to Yelp today to write this?" Ah ha ... I'm glad you asked. My fellow Yelpers have come to know me and my penchant for all things Burger King. Well folks, it has yet to be confirmed, but rumor has it Grinder's own proprietor, the notorious Scrunch, has "sold out" to BK themselves. "Wait! Our precious Crossroads stomping ground is going corporate! NO! How could Scrotch let this happen?! I can already hear the outrage. But just hear me out folks. This is a good thing. The Grinder's quality would be vastly improved by a corporate infrastructure. As a BK regular, including their ever-expanding empire of concept establishments, let me just tell you that while they vary in taste, they are all consistent to say the least. Service is always top-notch. Employee training and food quality standards are vastly superior to what I only assume goes on at Grinder's. When you step foot in Grinder's, they first thing you'll notice is that it's kind of a dive. Kind of gross. Actually, just gross, not kind of. Here's where I hope BK will really do their thing. Take that 'divey' atmosphere and clean it up, but keep the charm intact. Almost like when you step into a TGI Friday's. They all have that grandparent's basement charm that's so consistent across locations. BK could really help polish the place, and hopefully keep some of the grit we know. BK's take on pizza will be interesting. Hopefully they will ditch the ashy thin crust pizza served at Grinder's and go with something a bit more polished. Grinder's regulars know what I'm talking about - that thin layer of flour and cornmeal stuck to the bottom of your slice. With updates to pizza technology, I'm pretty sure this can be avoided. Surely BK will make improvements to the ovens that will allow that layer of crud to be eliminated. I'm picturing something like a giant "pizza microwave." Until Screetch lets BK take the reigns, I'm going to give Grinder's a solid two stars - one for their patio and one for their tater tots. Their tater tots are magnificent, and are really the only thing there I don't think BK could improve in some way. Regardless of weather the rumors are true, I do hope BK is able to make an appearance in the Crossroads. If Scrunch backs out, possibly they'll purchase one of the neighboring buildings and do a "Whopper Bar: Xroads." I'd welcome the BK family to the neighborhood with open arms. read more

I've been to Grinder's several times and I honestly do not understand what all the hype is about. The decor is pretty sweet. If I could just review the decor and atmosphere, then they would get 5 stars all the way. BUT The food is just down-right horrible. Tonight's visit is what did it in for me. I had their 2 for 1 pizza special (one mushroom, 1 pepperoni) with a half order of tots with cheese. The pizza was the worst I've ever had - burnt on the bottom with hardly any cheese. The mushroom pizza was laughable. They didn't sauteed those little mushrooms or do a single darn thing to them. They literally threw a handful of plain ol' mushroom on top. The cheese on my tots was way too salty; I couldn't finish them (and cheese just happens to be my favorite food in the world). Go here for a beer during a night of bar hopping, or come for the concert venue. But stay away from that nasty food. read more

What's not to love about Grinders? They include an awesome, urban concert venue along with TWO restaurants (Grinders West) full of all kinds of calorie-laden goodies. If I'm ordering lunch there, I'm partial to their BLT. It's got loads of avocado and a sweet bacon that pairs really nicely. The pizzas are always good and there are some insane toppings to add like curried chicken as well. I've also had their cheesesteak and tots and they're some of the best around. Concerts here are a blast in the warmer months because you can see parts of the Crossroads and skyline all around, giving it a really cool feeling all around. Glad to have a spot like Grinders, who in my opinion helped kickstart all the growth in the Crossroads a handful of years ago! read more

I first saw Grinders on an episode of The food Network's 'Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives', so I put it down as a place to check out the next time I was in Kansas City to visit my Mom. It did not disappoint. From the moment that you walk in you know that you are in for a unique dinning experience. From the wild & eclectic assortment of art to the amazing menu, there is enough here to keep everyone interested. I knew this place was legit when they offered the Philly Cheese Steak with Cheez-Wiz. Which is how you get it in Philly. None of this provolone crap. The steak was great, the peppers & onions done to perfection. On my most recent visit I had the Crabby Rangoon with the chili paste. It was among the best I've ever had. Then I went with the Woodyard Hillbilly burger. Served with a couple slices of cheddar, bacon, grilled onions and bbq sauce this was a great burger. The thing about Grinders is that the menu is so crazy you want to keep coming back to try it all. If you are looking for lunch then get there before the rush, think noon, or just after, think 1:00pm. I've heard about Grinders for years since moving back to KC from the east coast. But frankly, I had given up finding an authentic cheesesteak in these parts years ago and brushed off friends urging me to try Grinders. So I finally decided to go try it out the other day since I live downtown. We got there at lunchtime and sat in a dirty booth. Having been a bartender in a bar very similar to this one in college, I'm not put out at having to wipe a table off myself or finding that my feet stick to the floor. The decor and ambiance here are definitely of the dive/college bar variety. Our server was the bartender, and while not friendly she got the job done very efficiently. My drink stayed full and she kept checking on us to see if we needed anything. I was VERY pleasantly surprised that their menu stated they used fresh Amoroso rolls for their cheesesteaks! It's pretty easy to make a cheesesteak at home with thinly sliced top round and cheese, but the rolls make the sandwich and you can't find them anywhere around here. I prefer my cheesesteak with provolone, not Cheez Wiz, and some pizza sauce. So I ordered it and waited with breathless anticipation until it came out. Could this be it? Could this be what I've been searching for since leaving Philly? It was actually pretty good. A fair amount of cheese (I ordered extra), but it wasn't melted enough. The roll was just what I remember, soft and delicious. I could actually close my eyes for a few seconds and think I was back in PA. A couple of things weren't right, though. It came out smothered in pizza sauce. I like a good sauce on my cheesesteak, but this was drowning in it (see picture). And it was a little too spicy, overwhelming the tasty goodness of the steak and cheese. But maybe if there had been less of it I wouldn't have noticed that so much. I think sauce might be a Kansas City thing. People here tend to expect their food to swim in it. A dab of sauce under the meat on a cheesesteak, done right, is wonderful. But the biggest thing missing was the grease! When I eat a cheesesteak, I want grease! The roll should be dripping with it...it should be dripping down my arm. There was no grease to be found in my sandwich! Or maybe it was swallowed up by all the sauce. Overall, it IS probably the best cheesesteak in Kansas City. And next time I go, I might try it again and ask for less sauce...or maybe no sauce and see how it goes. I've heard the pizza here is very good, too, so I will definitely be trying that as well. I love being in the patio area here. It is great for sunny afternoons, and super fun when there is live music as well. The service is friendly, if not super efficient, but the atmosphere totally makes up for it. On the several occasions I have been here, we have always had issues with getting our orders taken and delivered as ordered, but like I noted, I will tolerate this for the excellent patio. I'm a fan of the Sunday Specials ($2 mimosas and bloody marys); the $2 draw and $5 PBR pitchers do not hurt either. I admit that I was a little leery about seeing show here. I knew it was general admission and bring you own lawnie/blanket. I fear port-a-lets. But... This was a great experience and a nice place to see a show. The dreaded port-o-lets were well maintained and actually had hand sanitizer in each one. The bar was efficient and lines never got too long. I didn't eat, but I wanted to. The food looked and smelled super. All in all, a really good experience under a full moon. One question - why would one pay $10 extra for a bleacher seat? They are jammed on the sidelines against a fence and don't seem advantageous in any way. read more

This place just screams dive bar! It was featured on Guy Fieri's triple D show and I can see why he picked this place. Luckily it was only a short walk from my hotel to get here and I was eager to try it out. Very colorful interior place that has an almost edgy atmosphere to it. I was immediately shown a seat and pursued the menu as my waitress informed me of the giant beer selection on tap. Not knowing what to go with, I started with a seasonal Oktoberfest and then placed my orders in. Reading the Yelp reviews online, it seemed the Philly cheesesteak and pizzas were where it was at so I ordered a half sub combo'd with a slice of ZA that was featured on the show. Initial impressions of the cheesesteak: juicy, cheesy, and messy. It was a decent sub but it did not scream Philly to me after having Pat's recently, but still good, or perhaps I was just hungry. The Bengal tiger pizza was interesting, green sauce, tandoori chicken, real crab meat, all topped with cilantro hearts and wood fire made to perfection. Now normally I would think this is an awkward combination but the flavors all seemed to compliment each other well in some way, not to mention the pizza was cooked well. I'd love to come back here and try some more heart stopping food at some point and there also seemed to be a back area where they would host live shows which most places don't always have. I like this place because the staff knows the product... Beer, and not just the names of what they stock. It's also a respectable place to get a Saturday lunch. We have had this place bookmarked for years after seeing it on DDD. I knew they had great sandwiches and the whole pizza looked decent but I was unaware they had a serious beer selection. Including Belgian Rochefort. Good start. The place smelled amazing and it was already busy at 1130 a.m. when we arrived. We sat at the bar and watched the guys and gals work their magic pumping out order after order in a very cramped space. They blew me away. We had several places to hit so we only ordered a slice of pizza and had a couple beers at the bar. They make a giant cheese pizza and then customize each slice and re bake it. This assured a thin crisp crust. The whole pies we saw come out had a thicker crust. Thin for us is preferred. Can't wait to go back and try one of the sandwiches next time. read more

"Grinders", is definitely a place to check out. All walks of life go to eat there. Want to people watch, this would be right down your alley. We didn't have time to stay, so we ordered take out. An "Ahi Tuna" Salad and "Pastrama sandwich on Pumpernickel with homemade Chips". Sooo good. We split the sandwich, and had the salad the next day. Enough for two to split. Nice portions. Guy Fieri knew what he was doing when he came here!! I saw that this place was listed as one of the restaurants Guy had visited in KC so I'd been wanting to go for a few months. The wait/want was soooo worth it! The atmosphere was so chill, and the setup and decor was too cool! I couldn't keep my eyes off the dome light wall. Our waiter was really helpful with narrowing down which foods we'd liked and his recommendations were on point. The food was too good to be true! The portions were perfect for the price and the flavor was amazing!! Normally with fried foods and no matter how much I eat, my stomach will ache a few minutes after eating it and I'll feel miserable for the rest of the day. But that was not the case for the Philly cheese steak I ordered. It was fulfilling and settled well with my GI tract. So, being a huge Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives fan, and on a road trip from Minnesota to Louisiana, this was obviously a must stop place on my road trip. Food: I got a HUGE slice of pepperoni pizza and holy hell! That was a slice of pizza I expected to when I wad in New York but never got. Definately have to fold it in half and use two hands. It was delicious. Paper thin crust that was crisp but not cracker crispy. It was amazing! I also got a half order Philly with everything on it, and get again, amazing! Beat out the Philly I had at Tony Luke's in Philly. Lots of meat, overflowing even, and provolone and cheese wiz. Atmosphere: The only real downside to this place was all the hipster millennial workers. I appreciate tattoos and beards, but something about them just screamed hipster. Could have been the goofy ass hats, or skinny jeans. I sat at the bar and the bartender was a good guy. Overall the atmosphere was definately different, but not in a totally bad way, just not your normal decor, which I appreciated. Also, only a one person bathroom for a restaurant/bar/music venue? There were like 7 different hot spots in KC that I wanted to hit up, but my schedule being what it was, I could only pick one, and I could only do it on Sunday, so that limited my options because a bunch of places were closed. I probably could've hit up a breakfast/brunch place, but had some complications for that too. In the end, I wanted to do a crazy double thing, where I hit up Grinders and went to a BBQ joint in Kansas, but we got too full at Grinders, so we just went home...disappointed. I'll just say it here, I don't understand this place. Are all these stars because of the beer? I didn't have any, so I can't say, but these stars can't be for the food! Let me just say that the Tater Tots were the only thing I really enjoyed here. But honestly, how can you go wrong? What separates these tots from others I've had...Ore Ida from the oven...are that they're so nice and crispy! Helps to have a deep fryer I guess. That Bengal Tiger Pizza is actually pretty unique, but it tasted pretty good. Flavoring was right on, chicken was good, and there was crab meat on it too which was, unfortunately, unnoticeable. The theme in KC seems to be that everything lacks seasoning (but not flavor)! Again, this pizza had the flavor, but not enough salt. Which made it a potentially "good" pizza to a "whatever" pizza. You should get it to douse your curiosity, and that's it. While we're on pizza, the reason I got to try the tater tots is because they forgot to "Chili Bomb" the pizza. So there was some miscommunication and they thought we just wanted tater tots. After I enjoyed a few tots by themselves, she took them to go "Chili Bomb" them, which is basically chili and cheese-wiz all over. When she brought it back, I was so disappointed. The chili was bad and the cheesewiz is just super freaking salty! So THAT'S where all of KC's salt goes! I tried the Chili Bomb mix and it was no good. The tots lost their crispiness, the chili wasn't really good, and the salty cheese on top just made it taste like super salty chili. Continuing on, the Le Hog Pizza is supposed to be this bacon, ham, and meatballs pizza, so you're thinking of a pretty substantial looking meat lovers-esque pizza, right? WRONG! This thing looked more pathetic than a Tombstone pizza that just came out of the oven and fell flat on its face. The pieces of meat were tiny, and the whole pizza looked lethargic. But the taste....THE TASTE......WHERE was the taste?! There was nothing to it! Ok, get this, it was so bad, that I had to add the Chili Bomb mix on top of it to make it edible! It was just a barely edible salt mine, but that pizza would've gone completely to waste had it not been for the Chili Bomb. Can you imagine that?! Finally, the Cheesesteak. I'm not from Phili, but I've had Geno's and Pat's, and neither of them looked like this. I'm not going to argue with Philly natives who say "This is just like home," but it's not the Philly I remember. First, all the steak is chopped up. I remember it being long thin slices. Cheese wiz is Cheese Wiz, so I guess that's the same. I actually didn't like authentic Philly Cheesesteaks from either Pat's or Geno's. I wouldn't refuse having them again, but I wouldn't go on my own accord. But Grinder's Philly? I would refuse having them again! Even though visibly there was a good amount of beef, I tasted none of it! All I tasted was super salty cheese wiz. Remember that Le Hog Pizza? I started using the Philly to season it over the Chili Bomb because that Chili just made things nasty. Would I go back to Grinders? Absolutely NOT! However, they do have a pretty wide assortment on their menu, and they have this Grinders West which is basically a deli. So maybe to try new things, but I'd have 0 desire to try any of these again, and I'm putting my expectations waaaaaay down to try anything else from these guys too. read more

All I can say is WOW. I was really impressed by everything here. The food and service were great. I've seen mixed reviews here about the service but that just wasn't the case for me. We often weren't ready when they came by multiple times. I had the Bengal tiger pizza which may have been the best pizza I've ever had! I also had the molten death wings which were pretty good. Not too hot but just hot enough. I also had a slice of the bombed pizza which was just over the top insane. I couldn't finish all of it. This was just a really inventive and interesting place. A dive bar, pizza place, cheese steak place, wing place...hmm how do I classify Grinders? All f the above! Great place for many excellent beers on tap, and great food. Is it the best pizza? No, but pretty darn good. The cheese steak was pretty outstanding though, and the wings were just OK. I do not recommend getting the "insane" level. It is pretty tasteless, and just plain hot and uncomfortable. The beers are updated regularly. Since it is fall, I had to try the Boulevard Octoberfest, and the Pumpkin beer. Both excellent! We wanted a place we could walk to from Union Station and it was a bit of a haul but worth it! Atmosphere is cool and laid back. Server was so welcoming and friendly. Thank you for the military discount! Our fam of 4 got the 18" Fort Supreme Pizza and it was outstanding! Slices are huge. We also got an order of fries and they were crisp, hot, and the perfect amount of saltiness. Highly recommend this place! read more

I'm sad we weren't able to soak up the atmosphere of Grinder's, but it was PACKED late Saturday afternoon (which is expected). Luckily, Grinder's West has the same menu and a lot less people! Service in the beginning was pretty slow, but hey, I love Grinder's. I'll cut them some slack. We'd been dying to try the chili bomb pizza, and we finally did this past weekend. The result of that + philly cheesesteak + wings + a margherita pizza was food bliss and also, cardiac arrest. Beautiful. :) read more

I always thought the tots and chili pizza was absurd until I ate the Junk Yard Dog this afternoon, covered with chili & cheese on a bed of tots. One of the best hot dog experiences of my life. Pizza is great. Philly is decent...Whiz is a must. My friends each got different grinders this afternoon and met in the middle on both. Lots of sausage versus balls discussion going on at the table. I like the open seating. I really like the beer selection although I only go when I can't partake. Wait staff is eclectic, but extremely good. Decor is...what it is. Pretty under whelmed with our recent lunch order. For $21.83 delivered we received a lukewarm cheesesteak with the wrong cheese (we indicated no cheez-wiz), no mushrooms, and the wrong meat (we ordered turkey, not beef). Our full order of handcut fries was actually a quarter portion of premade frozen fries (see picture). Wholeheartedly disappointing all around, would not recommend. read more
