As far as pizza goes, Grinders has my heart. My husband and I stopped in last weekend for lunch and drinks. They were running a special on New Belgium Dayblazer pounders that came with complimentary koozies. We each got one (obviously) because we love free stuff and we love beer. We got a full pepperoni pizza for the two of us, which made more sense because we both wanted the twofer $6 slices. We even had one slice leftover to take home. Our server was super chill but attentive at the same time - a refreshing combination. I have grown quite fond of our visits to Grinders and am now "a fan". They make a very good South Philly Cheese Steak (I always get the ribeye, as I think turkey just seems like sacrilege) to which I add banana peppers or jalapenos, and I enjoy the Meatball sandwich which is also served on an Amoroso Roll, and listed on the menu as a Meatball Grinder. If we are extra hungry, Hubby & I may share an order of Trailer Park Tater Tots and we sometimes smother them with Chili or Cheese. Hubby has a special favorite side, the Smoked Gouda Potato Casserole, but it's a little too rich for me so I generally only take a taste or two of his. Great place. Only complaint was service was not very friendly and a bit inattentive. Not the worst but could be better. Food was fantastic. Had the standard philly and the pizza philly with tots. Both were fantastic and the tots were the best I've ever had. Perfectly crispy and awesome seasoning. They also make their own hot sauce which was so good we bought a bottle and shipped it home. This place is one of the most interested g places in the crossroads. I recently ate lunch here and really the first time I have sat down and really looked around. There are so many cool pieces to the place. First off, I sat in an old commercial airlines seat. Next to me sat a guy at a table and he was sitting in a minivan bench. Comfy and cool.i ordered a specific Katy pizza with salmon pesto, shrooms and the like. It was wonderfully put together. The most sic was good and server very friendly as well. Unfortunately I'm not able to rate the food or drinks here because I didn't stay based on the service my group received. I was going to the Punch Brothers concert at the venue outside and came an hour early to grab some drinks and watch a game. I called earlier in the day to make sure the bar had a few tvs, which I assumed wouldn't be an issue to switch over to the USMNT World Cup qualifier that evening. Unfortunately the waitresses behind the bar insisted that they weren't a sports bar and wouldn't switch the TV playing The Princess Bride over to the game. I left and honestly won't be back. I've now been to both Grinders and I'm still very happy with them. I love the food and casual atmosphere. We weren't super hungry when we went so we stuck to appetizers. We had never had their crazy dough and while it seems really simple (and is) the flavor is spot on. It's a great appetizer to nibble on while visiting with your friends. You gotta know what type of atmosphere you are entering when you walk in the door, I wouldn't call it "hipster" as much as grungey-alternative maybe a lil punk badassness thrown in and an overall distaste for authority, no these aren't hipsters you'd find next door at the quiet coffee shop/bar working alone on their laptop after they're off work. Naw...these people know how to party and when crossroads concert venue is literally directly behind your place of employment I think it comes as a box to check on the resume. Personally I love the waitstaff, never have met one I haven't liked and I've came to grinders with all different types of people in tow with me, even the dreaded species of the child. Stretch has created a dive atmosphere however, the employees are what make grinders a go-to for me-I like the little bit of laziness and nonchalantness, it vibes with me but it may not with you... As for the food, if you are a New York style pizza fiend who folds his/her crust and doesn't mind a little bit of limpness at the tip then grinders pizza is for you! I enjoy the grease, the thin as all get out bready crust that borderlines on soggy with all the cheese piled on top is equally as good reheated. Especially on Monday nights after 5pm for 2 for 1 classic slices, cheese, sausage, pepperoni, or mushroom. The create your own slice option is usually what I opt for building some type of creation with peppers, bacon, goat cheese or whatever seems to catch my eye that day. But, the pre-made slice combinations are a good call too, the Le Hog and the chili pie bombed with tots is worth the extra 8 miles you have to run tomorrow if your heart doesn't stop while eating it! Haha! I've also taken vegetarian friends here and they have enjoyed the "Fun Guy" which has variations of mushrooms and creamy white sauce. Sometimes they have slices of the day, which I always go for if it's anything remotely good which it always is, salami and peppers-sign me up for two and the Buffalo chicken is one of the best rotating ones to order! As for the rest of the menu...I'm not qualified to speak on that topic haha stick with the pizzas and the big ass tots with cheese or the "go for it" chili and cheese combo, the Philly cheesesteaks always look loaded but I have never personally ordered one. The beers they offer puzzle me only because they are often, and I mean like over 50% of the time, out of whatever given craft tap I ask for. But, they usually have a decent selection so I can forgive and forget and move onto another beer. Recently it seems grinders highnoon in Leavenworth has been brewing its own beers, you can get flights of 4 for $10 however, only three varieties of house beers are brewed. The IPA, the Pub ale and the Cream ale are the current offerings and honestly I didn't care for any of them, they seemed watered down and the IPA literally had no hoppy notes or even a registered bitter note but out of the three the Pub Ale was the one I didn't hate, maybe I'll try em again and see if I feel the same way but I wouldn't recommend them unless you are a micro-brew nerd and wanna cross something "new"off your list. read more

Waste of money. 1st and last order. When I went to pick up the pizza, I noticed people enjoying really good looking slices of NY style pizza. When the lady brought my pizza out, I opened the box while she was taking my payment and was surprised to see the pizza looked nothing like the others I noticed. It looked like it was made somewhere else entirely and, it was supposed to be an 18" pizza but, looked like a 14" pizza. When I opened it, the lady even made a face like "what the hell". Absolutely the worst service imaginable. I mean terrible. Not a human working there gave a crap about the fact that they were out over 80% of the beer products. Mm I've hey carry. Nobody cared at all. "We were busy over the weekend " was all we were told. The service staff, and management staff alike, are extremely confrontational and rude. The place smells awesome when you walk in. That's when and where the fun stops. There were 6 of us in today. I can say this. If the place is trying to build its business, you certainly wouldn't know it. The service staff and management are COMPLETELY unconcerned. ALL of them look as if they need a shower and really require with laundry skills. I've heard the talk and read all the reviews about the establishment. The food is good. Very good. It's definitely a place for the younger crowd. No issues with service. If I came back here again, I would bring my dog and have a beer on the patio with some tots. The crust is thin and crispy and they don't over do it on toppings. Sauce is flavorful and not too sweet. One of my favorite pizzas I've had in KC. The service is very quick and they are always friendly. Sometimes they have concerts going on in the back but you have to pay extra for that. The restaurant isn't the cleanest thing but it is dive bar so don't go in expecting anything super fancy. My Husband has also had the Philly cheese steak here and he was very impressed with the flavor. We will definitely be back especially for the pizza. I remember when we were choosing which Diners Drive-Ins & Dives restaurant we were going to try our one night in KC and I just wanted ANYTHING that wasn't barbecue, so Grinders made it to the top of the list and was relatively convenient to our hotel. I've been to the diners, I've been to the drive-ins, this one is definitely a dive, and that's not a bad thing. The decor is graffiti and hipster-y. The menu is oddball (well, it would be, right?), and the service is not great (the staff act like serving you is an inconvenience). The food though? It's great! I don't think I'd eat in again, mostly because of the poor service and obnoxious music, but I'd order out if I were ever in KC again. Yes, I'm the boring weirdo who decided not to order one of their funky pizzas and instead ordered a BLT. This is a decision I will never regret. I have never had such amazing, incredible, delicious bacon in my whole life. I'm not even a big fan of bacon. Seriously! I didn't even need the mayo or the tomato, I could have just had a plate of that bacon and been happy. Did not eat at this location but attended the Violent Femmes and Echo and The Bunnymen. We purchased the VIP tickets that got us up close to the stage and an air conditioned bar. That was in itself was pretty awesome. The one bathroom was not enough for the amount of VIP. I think they oversold the tickets for VIP but I am not going to complain too loudly because I was front row. I look forward to more concerts at this outside venue. As a short person, I would say that I might just always swing for the VIP tickets. We paid twice the ticket amount for last night's show. Help the employees who stand and guard the stage. Amazing pizza! I got two slices, one with salmon and cream cheese bites, and the other woth all meat toppings. Both were awesome and the service was great. All the staff is friendly and you never have to worry about being forgotten. All the staff takes care of you and makes sure you're taken care of. I use to LOVE grinders calzones. They always came out super good and they were massive. Well worth the price. Ordered takeout tonight for my boyfriend and I because he had never tried it and we are both super disappointed. We both ordered calzones and added extra toppings and I ordered extra sides of ranch and pizza sauce. He went in to get our order about 10 minutes after it said it would be ready and he still stood there waiting for 25 minutes. When he went in to get it he was also told by an employee that they were out of cilantro (which costs an extra dollar to add) she didn't offer to add something else instead. Just stated that he basically wasn't getting it on his pizza and then walked away. Then we drove home to eat (we live 45 minutes away) when we got home I realized that they didn't even give us the extra sauces that we paid for and my calzone is FILLED with raw dough. I'm pregnant so in order to avoid eating something that has raw ingredients I now have to cook it myself which completely defeats the purpose of ordering food. Not to mention the calzones have gone up in price and are now about half the size they used to be. Incredibly disappointed and really wishing I wouldn't have even tipped considering the only reason I tipped for a pick up order is because the calzones always turn out so good but I unfortunately got raw food and didn't even get everything we paid for. read more
