So have you seen that meme out on the InterT00bZ that's like "Hey let's go to that new beer place they have $27 warm hazy IPAs in the middle of a parking lot?" Yeah, that's the vibe I was getting at Velum. There was a lot to like and a lot to not like about this place, so I'll start with the bad and end on a positive note. First off, it's in an old brewery and it looks like a warehouse. I'm not sure if they still brew their own beers but it straight up looks like an old warehouse. I've seen abandoned warehouses that look less like a warehouse than Velum. Maybe some people like that vibe but I felt like the cops were going to bust in and shut the party down like a teen coming-of-age movie. The taproom is all the way in the back, and so are the bathrooms, so if you break the magic circle, prepare to get your steps in. There's no kitchen. They DO partner with a food truck but they're getting their own review. I paid $10 for an average cocktail and $8 for a 12 oz cider that frankly wasn't that great. Either better drinks or bigger drinks, please. And everything is community seating. I don't hate the idea but I didn't care for the vibe so when I found a smaller table my friend and I grabbed it and boarded it. With that being said, there was a lot to like too. First off, we were there for a pinball night, and they have a great selection of pinball tables there, both classic and modern. I really would have liked information on joining a pinball league, but that wasn't offered anywhere that I could find. Plus on that particular night it was $10 for all-you-can-play, so we definitely got our money's worth there. The staff that I did interact with were super nice. That goes a long way and saved this from being a worse review. And the place is dog friendly, which is always a huge plus for me. All in all, I had a decent night. But the question as always is if I'll go back. Unfortunately, probably not of my own accord. If there's another pinball event, I'll definitely go, but it's not going into my rotation of cool spots. As a pickleball sports place, I'd give this place a 3. You are able to book indoor courts, but there is only 3 available-- 2 side by side and one perpendicular to it separated by a net. However, the floors are insanely slippery -- to the point that if you were playing quick plays or rapidly accelerating, I would be extremely cautious. Additionally, it's not clear when the floors transition from the smooth, slippery surface to a rough concrete where you could catch your feet. Between the 2 side by side courts, there's also a random pot hole/divot where you could easily roll your ankle. However, this brewery also offers exciting other experiences: arcade games including ping pong, pinball, etc., rock climbing upstairs, live sports TV, and obviously drinks as a bar. As a multi-faceted facility, there's a lot that you can do here. They also have a bunch of colorful murals, like the one of Mac Miller (rip) and of V for Velum. There's also free parking outside the facility and by the apartment complexes. read more

"Say Mac Miller Mural five times fast," we joke as a tongue twister. The gigantic artwork at the back of the brewery is quite a feature. We stopped at Velum on a Tuesday after realizing traffic home was a nightmare. We decided to wait it out with a pint rather than on the parkway. We received a friendly welcome and were immediately informed it was happy hour. Velum is a gigantic warehouse-sized space with indoor pickleball, arcade games, darts, pool tables, adjacent to the rock climbing, an outside seating area, food trucks, and brewery. The size and versatility of the space made it so there was something for everyone. We enjoyed our beers. I'd recommend it and would come back. read more

OH my goodness went to get a burger at the food truck out front while waiting I walked into 1975 seriously !!! pinball parlor right there on the Southside lots of machines including a few of those new fangled machines from the 80s like pacman ahh there only difference these babies are not 25 cents. They only accept tokens which you buy out of their vending machine some machines are cheaper machines are 50 cents folks coming into play were having fun and they were not the teens I recall seeing originally playing pinball ahh to be 13 again you can be go play a few games there are also what reminded of school cafeteria tables that fold up agains the wall attached benches its all good ps my work friend tells me they have rolling skating there some nights read more

This is a great event space and community hub, with tons to do! The staff are warm and friendly. The have amazing food trucks on site. So why the 3 stars? The fermentations. They are really subpar. Everything kind of tastes the same. The sours aren't very sour. The lagers aren't very crisp. All the beer tastes just, generally, "off". The pilsner I had was not bright and crisp. It was dull and flabby. I hope they can get some good process advice from other breweries in the area. Hopefully my issues are just from their being relatively new. read more

One of my favorite things here is that they always have a few tables with jigsaw puzzles going that you can jump in and help finish. Our friends suggested Velum as a great place to meet up to play pickleball and drink good beer. A time was had! For $20, we were able to reserve the pickleball court for one hour on a Wednesday evening; it looked to be reserved the remainder of the night (6-9pm). Later we discovered Pittsburgh Sport League (PSL) plays here. It's an old warehouse so the play area (courts and arcade) is not air conditioned but still pretty cool thanks to industrial-sized fans. The brewery/room to get your drinks and snacks is a much smaller, intimate space. I had a plum sour which was tasty. There are rotating food trucks. I don't remember which was there when we went but I loved my burger! They're going to see a whole more of us this fall! Clean, spacious, easy parking, and fun beers to try! read more

My friend and I met for a drink at Velum because they had a beer (gasp! Because I don't like beer) that I tried on a food and drink crawl and I really liked it! Always, velum is really a giant space equipped with pickleball courts, arcade games, a space where they brew their beer, and a tasting room. They also have some outdoor seating too. I ordered the Trail Run Ale which is made with ginger and lemon. I will say, while refreshing, it made more a "beer" taste that I remembered. I thought it tasted more like a cider originally. Anyways, it was still refreshing and the bartender was kind and helpful. I didn't know much about Velum until this year but I am becoming a fan! As an added bonus, the Cold Friend's Kitchen truck is parked there for some delicious bites! read more

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. This place is a nice, chill spot to grab drinks and go back to your childhood days with pinball and arcade games, ping pong, air hockey, pool table and they also have two indoor pickleball courts. If it is busy, you can reserve the courts for $20 and hour, but if nobody is using them, you can use them for free by using your ID to get paddles. Their beer list has a lot of IPAs. They have a Radler that was very tasty. The woman working was so kind to us and asked if we were from the area. She gave us a rundown of everything and was super welcoming. They did have a food truck outside as well and they rent the entire space out for private parties. read more

Mark my words, this will become one of Pittsburgh's top breweries. The space is HUGE, located in the bottom of the Ascend climb building. We walked in through the back where the current tap room is. The owners were super personable and welcoming. They had a selection of five beers on tap as well as some non-beer options. We tried the wit and the lager which were both great. You can currently hang out in the cozy tap room or walk down the ramp to a large warehouse space featuring complimentary games like ski ball and ping pong. There are indoor picnic style tables and also a nice outdoor patio space with more tables. It's currently gated off, but you can see where the official tap room will be sooner than later. It's a massive space and will feature even more games and seating. They had a food truck on site and plan to continue expanding the food options. This is such a cool location with tons of potential that's coming to life, can't wait to come back and bring friends. read more

I went here as part of a speed dating event! It is a very versatile space boasting a full pinball arcade, pickleball court, food trucks, and open event space in addition to a cozy taproom tucked away in the back corner. This marks our 85th Brewery in the area. 12 more to go before the other 5 open up sometime in 2023-2024 to say that I've been to every single micro brewery, posted about it on my Instagram and wrote about it here on Yelp. We arrived and the entrance is a little dangerous from the front for now. I hope they make this process better. When you walk in it's a huge open space with some picnic tables and seating areas. But a lot of open space. To the left you will see the large fermentation tanks for brewing beer. They have signs that show you how to get to the bar to order your drinks. It's cool because you walk by the production room. Everything is encapsulated by a fence for protection and or guard rails. We arrive into a small area with tables for sitting and drinking beer. I spoke to the guy waiting on me and he said they are 6 weeks old. He mentioned the beers that they have on the board is the ones that they started with. They're working on identifying what the flagship beer will be over time. Easy to order a beer and I had the concrete bunny. It was fabulous, I had to get a 4 pack to go as I enjoyed it very much. My wife had a lager. Another good thing is that they have wine from Bella Terra (5) of them available. That's great because they provide a good wine. I think this place and Aslin Brewery are going to become favorites with the open large space. They have some games here but would assume more will follow in due time. I'm excited about this place. One of the things I do is take a photo in front of every sign. The sign is small, but I'll take it and look forward to a larger and more established sign in the future. Redemption photo. Just missing the food, but the rumor is that food trucks will be available. Tonight is the first business night. The beer is good. I recommend the Concrete Bunny IPA. There are also canned mixed drinks and wine. For a first day of business, they had their act together, and the service was pleasant and speedy. Im expecting to spend some quality beer time at Velum and I am truly happy to welcome them to the neighborhood .
