It's like shopping in an old age home and all the food is all bad and nearly at due date

Bought some ground beef on July 4 for a Fourth of July dinner of hamburgers. Got home, opened it and it smelled rotten. Noticed that the "Best by" date as 6/29/26. Took it back to the store. The manager never said "Sorry about that" or anything else. I pointed out that the "Best by" date was last month. He refunded my money and called over someone who worked on the floor and told him to check the dates on the meat. We both went over and found over five packages of ground beef with the 6/29/26 "Best by" date. I found some with a "Best by" date of 7/9/26 and bought one. Got it home and opened it and it, too, was rotten. What the hell is giong on with this store? I've had a friend report that he's bought chicken breasts that were rotten when he opened them at home. Besides being outrageously overpriced this store doesn't check when meat is past it's sell date. I'm shopping at Target or Western Beef from now on. I'd give the store a no stars rating if I could. read more

Gristedes always sucks me inside when I'm walking past. I want to see what's on sale especially on Senior Discount Days. This store has all the standard grocery store items I find at every Gristedes. It's clean and has the same hard working employees stocking shelves and keeping the store clean. I'm glad these stores are staying in business and maintaining quality. I just wish they lowered their prices. Their prices can't compete with Key Food in my neighborhood. read more

We went here to buy some drinks and I was delighted to see how clean the supermarket was. Of course, I wasn't so happy with the prices. Everything now feels so expensive because it is. I'm glad to see that they are stocking the shelves. They do have senior discount days which helps seniors so that is nice. I am glad that the staff is attentive as well. Keep it up. But I don't like that there isn't a lot of variety of the items. Hard to find mixed salad. That shouldn't be. Make a little variety and I'll be happier! read more

This is the highest priced supermarket in the city. Saw 25 or ct increase from one week to the next. Outrageous. Half a d half went from 5.99 to 7.99 per quart. Feeling zen veggies went up 40pct. I don't know how this place has anything other 1 star. I only come here if I need something in a pinch and I can't find it anywhere else nearby, for less. Selection is decent (which is really their only positive). Food quality (e.g., produce, bread) seems poor. Gristede's used be of the oldest and most reliable grocery chain in New York City. I recently went there to get mixed salad and cucumber and salad dressing and one mango. Very simple summer salad. All of us can almost take for granted to walk into any Whole food store and make a salad without even thinking. Just give the cashier your card , charge and walk out. I didn't know at Gristede's you pay double and get inferior old boxed mixed salad and a very poorly sealed packaged cucumber that cost almost eight dollars and a sour mango among maybe a dozen to choose from. Its over for Gristede's. Don't bother going there and get depressed. The management clearly does not care. The one star is for the old and pleasant memories. read more

Just haven't been very impressed with the organization and appearance of this grocery store. The produce section is definitely newer and nicer, but the main store is old and needs renovation. This is right around the corner from me. Yet I hike from the UES to Trader Joe's for my main shopping. Why? Nasty staff, high prices, lack of choice, lack of decent brands. If it's on sale in the front window, you can be sure they have none in stock. I'm so glad a Whole Foods is going to be built on 57th and 2nd in a year or so. This particular Gristedes is superb in many aspects. The array of available grocery items is very large. Many items are American, Spanish and Italian. This factor satisfies the diversity of the population both living and working in this neighborhood. Aside from the grocery items they carry household items, greeting cards and a wide variety of beautiful colorful plants. The managers and staff are so very helpful and friendly. In addition they have a wonderful delivery service The customers feel safe and comfortable dealing with these employees. Come shopping! read more

This Gristedes gets the job done if you need to pick up some quick groceries, but it's pretty tight and antiquated. Went here on a lunch break a few weeks back, as I wanted to avoid the overpriced Food Emporium on 71st and 1st. Well, that backfired as soon as I paid $5 for just two red peppers. A few other vegetables brought my total up to almost $18 bucks! YEESH. If you live in this 'hood and this is your only option to pick up something quick, by all means, go to this Gristedes. For my lunch break grocery shopping jaunts, however, I'd likely avoid this location from now on. This place is a dump! When I was a kid Gristedes was the go to supermarket. The one on 1st Ave is just gross! The cuts of meat are puny and sorry-looking. The selection of frozen vegetables is minuscule and everything is overpriced! Keep walking. There's a Food Emporium on 3rd Ave. Specifically, ice cream is $2 more expensive than at the corner deli - who doesn't have access to the ability to bulk purchase that a supermarket has. Of course management wasn't responsible; of course it couldn't do anything about it. Vastly improved post renovation. Brighter, cleaner, large windows open to the street. They still have some reorganizing to do but they'll get there.. The deli and produce section are larger and have much more selection, the deli now offers many more prepared packaged meals. This market, like most supermarkets in Manhattan is overpriced and small but what are ya gonna do? (Tip: For amazeballs produce go to the farmers market in the schoolyard on 67th St on Saturdays.) The meat dept has never been great in this store, limited selection. The register setup is a bit chaotic.. There's no where to form lines. I also wish they had self checkouts. This market is so convenient to my apartment, it's been my go to market for years and will continue to be cause I am too lazy to schlep all over town for groceries. Complainers.. if you hate this store so much there's always fresh direct.. or supermarkets in the suburbs :-P read more

I gave it three stars and not less because the staff I have encountered have been professional, extremely helpful and pleasant. I only come here due to the fact that it's within close proximity of my apartment. I've been coming here since I was little, let me just say it took a turn for the worse. There's panhandlers in the doorway, mean staff, and expired food. I had to buy bacon, I brought home the bacon and made myself a sandwich. It was expired, I had to return it. The staff were mean and kept pushing me to exchange it, I ended up getting my money back. I give this place 2 stars because they have a great selection of snacks and drinks. read more

The shit-hole known as Gristedes has recently undergone an extensive renovation. The outcome? You guessed it -- still a Grade-A Shit-Hole. What else can one say about a store that charges its customers for the same items up to 40% more than other supermarkets within a four-to-five block radius? This Gristedes had always been a grungy, cluttered little hell den with poor selection and terrible produce whose owners must have prided themselves on playing the wolf to their customers' sheep. Now the chain has taken advantage of the demise of Food Emporium on 60th Street -- a much better stocked, cleaner, and more fairly-priced alternative (funny how that works, isn't it?) -- to give itself a makeover and hopefully capture the widowed customers of our dearly departed. They even got a brand new fancy awning with fancy script to try to trick us into believing that the scourge of UES shopping had cleaned up its act, reformed itself and deserved a second chance. And I fell for it. Which is why, as I sit here and type this, I am afflicted by a burning sensation in my upper right leg -- you see, as I strolled through Gristedes' new entrance earlier this evening (floor plan courtesy of Stevie Wonder, apparently), a piece of sharp, exposed metal that was jutting out of the wall caught and ripped through my brand new pants, scraping the skin below. I said it once, and I'll say it again: Grade-A Shit-Hole. I only hope this time I'll finally believe it. read more
