This cute little cabin like restaurant is all about the experience but the food is just as good. They have vintage décor and Rocky Mountain charm throughout. One of my favourite dishes is the fondue dinner in multi course version. I love their hearty ooey gooey French onion soup but you can opt for the salad if you're wanting something light and fresh prior to the decadent items that lie ahead. The cheese fondue is as good as every cheese fondue I've ever tasted but you can try a bunch of different game meat for the next course. The game ranges from buffalo, venison, to wild boar. I went with the venison which is so delicious when cooked right and finally ended with the sweet velvety chocolate fondue. The wait staff are friendly, quick and make the experience so much more enjoyable through interactive cooking and good old charm.
Came here on a busy Saturday afternoon without a reservation and only had to wait about 30 minutes for a table. Very cool ambiance inside the restaurant so I didn't mind the wait. Also the hostess took our drink orders while we waited which was nice. Got seated outside and it was a great spot to sit under the warmer but still enjoy the fresh air and people watch. I started off with an Old Fashioned and maybe the best French onion soup I've ever had. For the main course we had Alberta Beef and Caribou. Very high quality and tasty meat. Our waitress was super busy but still took the time to explain everything, cooking recommendations, dipping sauces, etc. Being such a touristy place I went in with pretty low expectations but was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. Definitely recommend a reservation but if you don't have one it's worth the wait in my opinion.
The Grizzly House was the best dinner of our Banff trip. The staff were very welcoming when we arrived and helped us find a table where we could park our stroller. We opted for the four course menu. There was Gamay Noir recommended on the wine list, and it was very good and paired well with all of our dishes. I started with the French onion soup which was wonderful, and my husband said the chicken and rice soup was good as well. For our main course, we chose one of the specials that featured local game such as venison. We really enjoyed all the meats that aren't often on menus, and the dipping sauces were unique and delicious. The chocolate course was absolutely incredible. Everything was timed very well giving us time to enjoy each course without feeling rushed or waiting around. Throughout the meal, there was fun vintage music playing. I will say that the restaurant felt smoky at times from all the fondue pots and grills. It didn't bother me too much, but I'd probably choose to sit outside if I visited in the summer.
First stop in Banff and was recommended by a friend. Ambiance: It's extremely dark and smokey in here lol. There are a lot of interesting and fun things to look at in here (in a funny and good way) Food: Fondue and BBQ. We started with the cheese and bread fondue and then proceeded to get the Hunter's portion of the BBQ, which we personally grilled on a hot black coal. So good and honestly portioned just right. Service: Was great - no complaints. Guy was funny.
We originally had planned to eat at the steakhouse at the Fairmont, but my friend told us a visit to the Grizzly House was a must. Based on the crowds in Banff I assumed we would never get a last minute reservation, but I called and it was our lucky day. My friend said it's all about the atmosphere here and it is very cool and super fun, but as a fondue lover I was all about the food too. We went with the complete fondue dinner because why not while on vacay. I started with the grizzly salad (so good), cheese fondue (lick the fondue bowl good), steak and lobster on hot rocks (also delicious and fun to cook) and then the chocolate fondue for dessert. The chocolate dessert was probably my least favorite part, but only probably because i was so full by the time we got that. Our waitress was very nice and helpful. Our friend had asked us to buy him a shirt which they no longer sell, but she was nice enough to give us some placemats for him. Not quite the same, but a nice touch. We had a lot of good meals in Banff and Lake Louise, but this was probably one of my favorites and the first Ill be to recommend others who are coming to visit.
This was my first experience at a fondue restaurant and I have to say, it was good food and rather fun. We did the four course option. I had beef and shrimp and Husband had beef and chicken. You start with a cheese fondue dip and bread. That isn't usually my thing but I really liked it. Had to remind myself not to fill up on bread. At the end of that course, Dave, our server scraped the caramelized cheese crust that formed on the bottom of our pan and we used that for a spread. So good. Second we cooked the meat. We had good instructions so it turned out great. The shrimp was so easy to cook because it curls and is quick. The beef took a bit more cooking. Even if you don't get it right the first time, it's super easy to put it right back in. The last course was chocolate fondue and frankly, dipping anything into chocolate is great. They had strawberries, bananas, pineapple and cantaloupe. We pretty much ate all of that. So good. The vibe of the place is super dark. Not sure why. Plus we were seated in a corner with a low ceiling so it was even darker. I seriously could barely see the menu and it was hard to see if my beef was cooked. There was also a phone at each table that you could call other tables (to make a love connection??) A bit odd if you ask me. Staff was super. Our server Dave rocked it. The host was kind to check outside to see how long a table wait it would be. Fun spot for a new experience.
Based on online reviews, I made a lunch reservation in advance. But if you arrive right when they open at 11:30am, it's likely not necessary. We were seated inside by the window, which turned out to be the perfect spot. Our server was friendly and walked us through the menu. We decided to share the cheese fondue for two, which came with a basket of bread and fresh garlic to melt into the cheese, so good! We also split a nice bowl of French onion soup. For our mains, my husband chose the chicken and I went with the seafood option, which included lobster, scallops, and shrimp cooked tableside on a hot plate. Each entrée came with a salad and some delicious crisp rösti potatoes. While the protein portions were on the smaller side (only about 4 oz), the fondue and bread definitely made up for it. I was also glad we were seated near the window as the interior is quite dark, especially toward the back, which wouldn't have been ideal for photos. All in all, it was a cozy and enjoyable fondue experience.
A classic Banff restaurant but is solely for the experience and less so the food. This place specializes in fondues and a variety of exotic meats like kangaroo, alligator, elk, etc, stuff that you don't typically find much elsewhere. We called ahead to make a reservation just in case (it's summer so it can be busy), but when we arrived, there were lots of tables. The chairs and tables do need a bit of deep cleaning - fairly sticky from the oils and grimy, so not the best intro. We got the complete fondue dinner for 2 people and we get to choose the meats. The server recommended hot plate instead of oil fondue for the meats, so we opted with that. We got 1 soup 1 salad to share, and they were pretty hearty. Salad was pretty good, and soup was a chicken noodle soup that is ravioli like instead of the noodles, and it is a bit on the saltier side. The cheese fondue comes with bread and it was fairly bitter. I have had fondue in Switzerland, and even though there is wine, it is not supposed to be so bitter from the get go even though as the cheese cooks, the wine dissipates to become less bitter. The bread was a bit stale. A complete miss We got classic and exotic so we got some Alberta beef and chicken (they were okay, not too memorable) with flavor enhancements from the sauces they provided. The exotic did not have rattlesnake but instead kangaroo, fine by me. It was a good experience to try alligator, kangaroo, ostrich, frog leg, buffalo, venison, and yellowfin tuna (supposed exotic fish of the day haha) all in one sitting, some of which my first time trying. The meats were a good experience but quality felt fairly average. The chocolate fondue was served for dessert with strawberries, bananas, wafers, and other fruits. It was pretty solid given the chocolate is Belgian chocolate, and it is the real deal. Overall, only go if it is a bucket list item. It is a classic restaurant but it is not impressive food and ambience wise.
We were in between tour stops and ran into this gem. They just opened and the server was very accommodating! I had the seafood stone grill (unofficial name on menu lol) and bison meatball I think and both were so delish I could not believe we were served quick we didn't miss our bus and our tummies were happy! Missed trying their fondue but everything was fantastic. We sat inside but their outdoor seating have heaters I believe!
Grizzly House caught our eye walking around on Banff Ave so my wife and I wanted to give it a try. This was one of, if not my favorite dining experience period! I've had some fondue experiences at more "fancy" places but the quality and quantity you get here topped them all for me. I really liked the cheese fondue, their steak, chicken, and scallops (and all the sauces!), and the cherry on top was the chocolate fondue which came with so many delicious fruits and amazing melted chocolate. This was an amazing dinner, our waiter was awesome and funny and you can't beat the location off of Banff Ave. I recommend sitting near the windows like we did since the rest of the restaurant was pretty dark. This is definitely a must try when in Banff.

We had such a wonderful time at The Grizzly House! From start to finish, the service was fantastic. Our waiter was truly exceptional, taking the time to give us thoughtful, personalized recommendations for local foods, and suggesting we try their "hot stone" cooking method. It was our first time trying raw bison, and it was such a unique experience! I've actually wanted to try tartare ever since I saw that one Mr. Bean episode, and I'm very glad to report that I liked it much more than he did! My daughter and I also tried elk for the first time, and we both absolutely loved the "gamey" flavor. While Vancouver often gets all the credit as the food destination west side of Canada, Banff has something entirely different to offer that you simply can't find in the city. It's a unique, rustic experience that feels perfectly suited to the mountain setting. It's rare to find a place that is this interactive and fun. We enjoyed it so much that we are already looking forward to coming back on our next trip to Banff! read more
This is more experience than great dining imo. Still good eats, for me one I'm happy to have done but now I'm good. This place is dark inside, cool vibe, give 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust! Had the hunters plate on hot rock. Boar, buffalo and venison. You cook the meat on a 600 degree stone on your table. It's unique to be sure. You also have a plate with a variety of dipping sauces. The apps and dessert follows a fondue theme of melted cheese and chocolate respectively. This is a rich meal. One to have on occasion and for an experience. read more

I thought this place was super fun and kitschy. Picture like tiki vibes but log cabin style. The food was very good and ask your waiter about the phones at each table! Gave us a good chuckle. Glad I went but be prepared to smell like food after! lol. read more

The Grizzly House has a cozy atmosphere and service was very helpful. Food is not inventive but the options were very vast for safe eaters or adventurous eaters. I highly recommend this spot if its your first time in Banff as its a spot the town is known for and offers delicious food. read more

We made reservations a few weeks ahead of time because it's books up quickly. We heard multiple videos suggest this place so we knew we wanted to try it out. It's pretty large but we got seated in the front of the restaurant near the windows. It was really nice. I didn't realize how dark it got until I went to the back to use the restroom. It's very interesting decor so that was fun. We all got different fondue sets to try. We got one oil and one cheese. They were both pretty good although I actually thought the hot oil was better, which I was surprised by. We also got the hot stones to cook the meat on. There were several different sauces as well. I'm so glad we got to try this place. It was a different experience and was good. The chocolate fondue at the end was also very delicious. We had a ver nice time. read more

I initially did not think of coming to this restaurant but a lot of Banff locals recommended it so we decided to check it out. It was difficult to get a dinner reservation so we went for a late lunch. We ordered the Caesar salad with anchovies, the elk steak (comes with vegetables and potato), and the beef fondue. The beef fondue was interesting since it was cooked on a hot stone with garlic butter and came with many sauces. It was definitely the best dish. The Alberta beef was very tender. Service was a bit slow but friendly. The restaurant itself has a lot of character and definitely was interesting to check out. read more

We took the family, and had a amazing time! We did the Fondue. We had the exotic meats! What an experience, and it tasted amazing! My teenage boy thought it was so fun! What a great night. Our waitress was top notch! I haven't had service like that in a long time. We will come back when we visit again read more
Didn't realize this was a fondue place until we arrived--my bad for not checking the menu. I was hoping for something light but ended up committing to the four-course meal. The salad was basic, and the cheese and bread fondue didn't wow us--the cheese lacked flavor, and the bread could've been warmer. Things turned around with the entrée on a hot stone. The sauces were incredible, and every bite was delicious. Dessert (Belgian chocolate fondue) was the highlight--absolutely amazing. A few heads-up: the lighting is super dim, I had a hard time seeing, and the smoke from the hot stones made my eyes sting for a while. Be prepared--your clothes will smell like smoke afterward. Pricey, but worth it for a fun, unique experience if you're just visiting read more

Super dark and rustic interior absolutely love the vibe! Lovely server met us where our tastes were for the night. We both started with the salad. My husband said his Caesar salad. It was one of the best he's ever had and I had the house salad, which was also pre-mixed with dressing and Uniquely yummy healthy heaven. We ordered the cheese fondue dinner bc we were primarily in search of a delicious cheese fondue and that is what we got! My husband also got an elk buffalo sausage appetizer as well for an aside to his entrée. We would definitely recommend this place and would absolutely return!! read more

Heard so many great things! We had to try it on our vacation. We got seated right away. Steph was our server and did a great job. We had no idea the history of the place. So much fun. There are phones at each table. It used to be a swinger's place, a Tinder before Tinder . Under the placemat, there was a map of the inside, so if you see someone you like, call them and start a chat!! I ordered the French Onion Soup. It was ok. Average. We came for the steak & cheese fondue. I ordered the SOW portion, 12oz of beef. They come tabke side and bring you a hot stone to cook your items. Very cool!! I also ordered the cheese fondue because who doesnt want to dip steak in melted cheese. I guess that's not a normal thing? Who knew, it was amazing so definitely try it. While casually strolling through the town of Banff, we came across this restaurant. We were looking to dine and celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The Grizzly House is a famous fondue serving restaurant and has been in business since 1967. The menu features Alberta beef, buffalo, chicken, rattlesnake, shark and wild game. We were so intrigued by all the choices. I walked in to inquire about eating here and saw a sign that reservations were recommended. I took a chance and asked the hostess if they could possibly fit us in. She reviewed the reservations and told me they could. We were seated at a nice table and ready to enjoy an interesting meal. When we sat down we noticed a phone on the wall. We asked out server what the phones were about. He explained that back in the 1970's, this was actually part restaurant and part discoteque. The phones were used to call table to table. I guess you could have called someone across the room and asked them to dance. Ha! Ha! Funny we noticed they still play music from the 1970's as well while you dine. We started with the Classic French Onion soup that had a Swiss cheese melted topping and a Caesars Salad. We moved onto the next dish which was the Cheese Fondue for two. Our server was so good to show us exactly how to eat the cheese and don't forget to scrape the bowl as he informed us this is the best part of the cheese fondue. For our main course, we ordered the Beef and Lobster fondue. It is interesting how they serve the meal. A very hot stone is placed on your table and they bring you the meat and fish. You cook it to your liking on the stone and then dip in the fondue sauces provided. Our dinner was delicious! We had so much fun trying the sauces. The Alberta beef was so very rich and tasty. The lobster was also so savory. Since we were celebrating, we went all out and ordered the chocolate fondue for dessert. Lip smacking it was! Lots of fruits to dip in the hot chocolate. Our server was truly the best. He was very attentive helpful and available whenever we needed him. When he served our dessert fondue, he brought out a sparkler to commemorate our anniversary. A very nice touch that we appreciated. Overall our experience here was five stars and from the moment we walked in to walking out the door. read more
We loved this place and were so glad we took a chance on it! Our only complaint was how dark it was in the main seating area, however there are outside and front lobby options where we were seated and were happy with that. Our server Suzanne greated us quickly, had a nice outgoing personality, and offered menu options. We both opted for the complete fondu dinner which ended up being a great choice! The seafood combo: lobster, shrimp and scallops and steak and lobster combo. For starters we had the salad, which had a fantastic housemade dressing and omg the french onion soup! Next was the grerrier cheese fondu (I believe is what our server said). For our main dishes a hot stone was brought out, a seasoned butter for cooking and only took a few minutes for each item to be cooked. I hardly used any of my dipping sauces but all were tasty. The dessert was a mix of fresh fruit dipped in a chocolate fondu, so good! The service was excellent, food was worth every penny, ambiance was fitting and we highly recommend for a different experience! read more

If you're a fondu fan this is a good spot. The cheese reminded me of Switzerland and the the fondu there. Sadly I'm not a fondu person but I can appreciate the authenticity and the consistency of the the product served. Great experience with the grilling of the meat, along with the yummy bread, and dipping them in the melted cheese. It did get a bit Smokey in there so don't where clothes that you dont want to get Smokey. It's a Good spot for a date or a group. Not sure about a large party. read more
We've eaten a lot of places...this is easily in our top 5 restaurants in the world. First off, it's beautiful and so unique on the inside. You will look around all night and still find new things to stare at. The food, absolutely exceptional. I don't think you can go wrong with a single thing on this menu. Lastly, service, which was also great. Our waitress was kind and was very helpful. The menu can be a bit intimidating but the waitstaff will walk you through it! ONLY DOWN SIDE: it's smoky and the smell of butter, garlic, and cooked meat is strong so be prepared to leave there and have the smell on your clothes. If you're traveling and you take home dirty clothes I promise your whole suitcase is going to smell like you just left this place. My husband and I loved the salad, cheese bread app, steak and scallops the lobster wasn't that good. The dessert was yummy too. Our server was great and very attentive. Such a great experience! The Complete Fondue Dinners are the way to go. Not too often do you get to have exotic meats like alligator and ostrich! The different courses were timed very well and service was great. Would recommend upgrading to the French Onion Soup for a couple dollars more for the starter. Also, if you like Caesar cocktails they make a great one here. read more

Without a doubt, Grizzly House is the best fondue restaurant I've ever been to - and I've been to quite a few, all over the world. They've been open since 1967, and are still doing things the same way - the right way. The flavors, ambiance, and service were all completely on point. We got the mushroom appetizer, which had many awesome different stuffings you could fill the mushroom with before dipping it in batter and frying in oil. We also got the cheese fondue, which had a delicious wine and Gruyere cheese combination. The flavor was strong, sharp, and totally delicious. The portion sizes were just right and significantly larger than other similar restaurants I've been to. They also had a hot rock option for the meat and seafood that we ordered. We tried this out, and it was awesome with the garlic butter frying up the pieces of meat, shrimp, and lobster tail fresh. Winding everything up for dessert was the chocolate fondue, which they served special because we had a birthday in the party. The chocolate was just awesome and was not super sugary sweet like a lot of chocolates you get. It had a right balance between savory and sweet that made it really irresistible. Our server had a very friendly and upbeat attitude, and was very helpful in explaining the different types of cooking options, and how to use all of the implements. The decor of the restaurant was a hand carved wooden theme that really looked like it was straight out of the late 60s in early 1970s. The old-school feel only added to the awesome environment. I heard other people talking about how they drove several hours just to come to this restaurant, and after the meal we clearly understood why. I don't normally like leaving negative reviews, but as a word of advice GO ELSEWHERE. There are SO many good restaurants in town and this is not it. I was well aware that the food wouldn't be the best, but I also read that people have had fun experiences here and that the ambience was worth it. From reading reviews, we learned there were phones at each table to call other tables. A left over from the restaurants interesting past! However, we were seated at a table in a neglected corner with no phone. So we didn't even get to have a fun experience with less than mediocre food. We got the 4 course fondue meal. The cheese fondue is literally just bread and cheese. That's it. Insane in my opinion, like why not offer some veggies and fruit to dip as well. The meat had no seasoning and the instructed cooking time was not accurate. Our server was disengaged and we had to flag him down for each course and for the bill. Final note, they sat me under a disgusting, dripping taxidermy bison. read more
My wife and I last ate at the Grizzly House in 1998 during our honeymoon. 25 years later we visited again! The place was just like we remembered it (phones on the wall to call other tables in the restaurant, darkly lit dining areas and the smell of fondue). We had a very attentive and friendly server who took great care of us. My wife ordered the beef and chicken fondue meal while I got the beef and scallop meal. This is a four course meal with salad or soup, cheese fondue with bread cubes, entrees and then a chocolate fondue with various fruits. You can choose between oil (canola) or a 600 degree hot rock. We opted for the hot rock to cook our meat. The sauces and meats were good. I probably enjoyed the cheese fondue appetizer the most while my wife loved the chocolate fondue. It was really nice to re-visit the Grizzly House. We left quite full and ready to take on the Banff National Park. read more
