Really unique spot in GR! Great place for a date (which is exactly what we did). They've got live jazz music going, plenty of wine options and some lite bites to go along. Honestly this was such a fun night out. I would recommend being picky about the table you want, the way this place is laid out makes certain tables much more desirable for watching the musicians. If you just want to listen and don't care about watching then it probably doesn't matter but if you want to view then you'll want to be on the far side of the entry. The bar sits in the middle of the place so it can block your view! Other than that, you're in for a GREAT night out and some fantastic music. read more

Very very sad GR Noir is closing at the end of this month. Sad when business that opened up in the pandemic don't make it... I first learned about GR Noir after a Yelp elite event. This black and women owned business is such a fun concept of mixing music and wine. But the prices are a bit steep. I see why some folks would be turned off by a $15 cover plus paying for drinks/food. I personally didn't mind paying because I knew who my money was supporting. I know the cover goes to the artists. And honestly the food was scrumptious, and well balanced.... I got the bruschetta and my boyfriend got the chicken and waffles. The wine selection was very fun and was hard to pick. We each got a flight so we could try a bit of everything. The staff were friendly too.... Cons: $15 cover charge per person and there was no signage/we were not informed by staff, it just showed up on the bill. Pros: beautiful and clean environment. Friendly staff. Overall we likely will not return because of the cover charge/not being informed of a cover charge. Prices are a little steep -but comparable to other wine bars in the area. But the cover charge put it over the top. Over $50 for the equivalent of two glasses and a split dessert bc of the hidden charge. I tried to get the attention of staff to ask about the charge, but I feel like they were avoiding eye contact like this is a common problem -or it could be they were busy and didn't notice me trying to get their attention. It's a nice place -but a little pricey and I did NOT like the hidden up charge. I had been wanting to go to GRNoir for the past couple of years, so I was thrilled when I was finally able to come! I really enjoyed the experience; they typically take reservations but if they have some openings, they will let you sit. We went in at around 7:30pm on a Saturday and it wasn't too full. They have live music on selected days, so I chose a day they had live music which I really loved. Jazz and wine... yes please! I will admit I don't know too much about wine, but our server was excellent in helping me pick something based off of what I might like. The service was excellent; everybody was warm and friendly. I'm so happy we finally made it to GRNoir! It's been on my radar since they opened, but I just never had a chance to stop by. We arrived about an hour before they closed recently and were seated right away in a cozy corner. The space is classy and cute, with great lighting and soft seating. I was happy to see they had a couple non-alcoholic wines as I wasn't drinking that day. The one I ordered was tasty and a bit bubbly - I really liked it! There was a free jam session going on when we were there, which was really fun. They had a whole bunch of musicians rotating in and out for each song, including a trombonist, drummer, bass player, and pianist. It was a laid back vibe and we really enjoyed the music. As people started to clear out a bit, we were able to move to the bar. They serve some small plates but we had just eaten dinner. Never tipped below 20% until today The live music was phenomenal, food was great, service was terrible. We made a reservation but they never saved our seat so we had to sit at the bar, we sat and nobody took our order for 20 minutes and once they did they made us feel like the didn't have time for us. Once we finished our first round our glasses sat empty for another 45 minutes before we were asked if we wanted another round. They also add a cover that was not mentioned online or to us when we arrived which felt like a scam. My recommendation: drink ahead of time and just enjoy the music! I enjoyed every moment of my experience at GRNoir. This is a Black family owned Wine and Jazz. The one of the owners is also a sommelier and the recommendations they made was bussin'. I came for my bday with my family. We got there a little after they opened so we had the pick of tables, which was awesome! The décor was so nice, the seating was really comfortable and the flow of the place keep the feel of it not being crowded while it filled up with patrons. If you're planning to go during the evening, book a reservation because once the doors open it packs out quickly. They offered a fruit board and a meat board in a couple of sizes and they offer wine flights if you want to try a few. A friend and I decided to get together and try GRNoir. We made reservations well in advance for their live music and was probably about a month out based on our availability. When I arrived, it was pretty relaxed and the music was just getting set up. We were promptly seated and got a couple spots at the bar, and they were not taking any walk ins that night. The atmosphere was great but be warned, it's a bit loud with the live music. There were a couple technical difficulties and the mics and speakers would screech like crazy, but the band was great! At times, I felt like I was yelling over the music or my friend was because of the music, so if you want to hear your party, sit further away from the musicians or know to speak up. They could do a little better with some acoustics to damper a little bit but overall, it didn't bother me. I ordered the rosé flight and it pretty decent. I'm just not a huge rosé fan which is why I opted for the flight to try. My favorite was the second one, but probably couldn't drink more than a glass. The bartender and staff were extremely attentive and friendly and we had a good time. A little surprised at the $10 live jazz fee per person but maybe that was listed on the reservation online and I didn't see it. We were also told that our 90 minutes were coming to a close by them dropping a sign down to subtly let us know we needed to cash out. I'd consider coming here again for after dinner drinks! But the food menu is limited, so probably nothing other than wine and music. Just not sure I would think to make a reservation unless it's for a jazz night. read more

I had really high expectations coming here. We had already eaten, so we didn't order food. The food they I saw near us looked okay, but nothing extravagant. The jazz was nice - it really creates a vibe. The only seating that was available when we got there, was at the bar. Honestly, if it's a jazz night and you are trying to focus on that, I would suggest not sitting at the bar. It was very "busy" and distracting sitting there - just not as enjoyable. The service was pretty good. It was packed that night, so I understand a longer wait time to order and get drinks. The menu was not that easy to navigate, honestly. But the wines that we had were okay. Their wine pouring system is neat - I've never seen that before. This seemed to be a Black-owned business, with only Black staff. I really wanted to like GR Noir, but it did miss the mark for me. During the daylight, the atmosphere was missing something, but I think after dark on a night where they have live jazz music and are open to capacity it might be better! My fiancé and I had a happy hour date here, so we got their $27 deal for jazzy shrimp and a bottle of Urban Riesling. Great price. We also ordered their brisket slider trio. The shrimp had a yummy bangbang type of sauce on it, but they were very soggy. The brisket wasn't tender, and the wine wasn't our favorite (even though we drink Rieslings often). All of the servers were really nice, but it definitely took us quite a bit to cash out. Rockwells is just a couple of doors down and definitely has their food menu beat, and they also offer jazz nights... so I'm not sure I'd return here sadly! read more

I'm so happy we decided to visit this lovely wine bar. The owners are super knowledgeable. It's owned by a couple and the husband is the only Black sommelier in Michigan! The Kathy Lamar Quartet did a wonderful job! Plenty of wine selections but I recommend the Catena - it's highly rated and priced very reasonably. As for appetizers I recommend the Bruschetta. It totally hits the spot. Lastly, I recommend calling ahead a bit in advance and getting a reservation. On weekends especially the reservation list fills up quickly. It was a night they have sessions. I didn't know but only$10 charge person I just in. I was very hungry unfortunate they don't have carry many big stuff so I just order meat and fruits plate. We visited GR Noir last weekend for the first time with reservations for after dinner drinks and jazz. I was super disappointed when we arrived to find out that since I had made the reservation that their music schedule had changed to only playing on Wednesday and Saturday nights - we, unfortunately, were there on a Friday night. They had jazz music playing on the speaker system, but the whole reason we went was to finally hear some live music! When I called a few weeks back to make the reservations the woman on the phone was wonderful and explained that due to covid they were only making reservations for 1 hour and 15 mins at a time - which is why we decided to have dinner somewhere else, then end with wine/jazz there as a night cap. 1 hour and 15 mins didn't seem like long enough for us to causally relax and enjoy a dinner out. That, and, she said their menu was more small plates versus larger dinner entrees. So again, the perfect place for a happy hour and a snack or even dessert - they did have two items on their dessert menu. The woman on the phone also explained to me that the band right now was not going to use horns to avoid the 'blowing' of air due to covid. So the set up is drums and a piano right now. The wine set up was awesome! They have all their wines on tap which line the far wall on display. It appears they are all connected to a system and are measured by machines. We were curious if they are all also connected to a system tracking the pours/what's used/how much and perhaps even connected to the register? Pretty snazzy. We got two whine flights and enjoyed them very much. The atmosphere was clean and crisp with a U shaped bar in the middle. Some soft seating near the front entrance with higher top tables and some lower rounds. There is no place to validate parking at this time, but street parking or paid for ramps around all around the building. We'd like to return at some point in order to get a better feel of the Jazz vibe. Happy to have this new addition in our city. read more

LOVE this place!!! They are following all COVID guidelines and staff was masked. The decor was beautiful and luxurious; the gold chairs were my favorite! The staff was very friendly from the time you walk in the door. We had Sam as our waiter and he made great suggestions and checked on us often. There are many black owned brand we haven't found here in GRap and I loved that we could purchase bottles there! They do have live music; check the calendar online to see when and the acts. A few days ago 2 men and a son of one of them, were walking by the front window of GR NOIR, turned their IPHONEs to get a view inside the GR NOIR, at 35 Division St. Downtown GR. and a verbally abusive heavy set woman came rushing out the front door brandishing a open knife at them. The man had to spray her with pepper spray to de-escalate her knife threatening behavior. My friends and I had really high hopes for this spot, but we left disappointed and not wanting to ever come back. Upon arriving, the waitress greeted us by saying "we have already started your reservation 13 minutes ago" even though we walked in at 8:51pm, 6 minutes past our 8:45 res time. This was irritating but we brushed it off. Our waitress brought my friend the wrong bottle of wine, and then the manager attempted to make us pay for the bottle, even though this was 100% the waitresses fault. Very inappropriate, unprofessional, and something a wine bar should NEVER do. Our boyfriend's showed up about 10 minutes after us because they were parking the car, and when they attempted to walk to our table they were scolded by management for walking into the restaurant without waiting for a host. The cherry on top: As soon as the jazz band (which was actually amazing, hence the 2 stars) finished around 9:30, management put all the lights on and began cleaning up for the night. I have never in my life seen this happen at a restaurant. All four of us have worked in the restaurant and bar industry and we were appalled by this. We spent a lot of money to experience mediocre wine that was NOT presented to us, a waitress and manager that tried to get us to pay for wine that no one drank, and be rushed out of the place 30 minutes before closing time. Do yourself a favor and go to House of Wine or Reserve Wine Bar instead, you will thank me later! read more

Wow - what a gem to have in Grand Rapids! Really amazing jazz and wine selection. We didn't order any small plates but everything that came out looked delicious. We did, however, get dessert, and the banana pudding was on point! My husband enjoyed a couple different Cabernets, both lovely recommendations from our server. I don't drink much alcohol anymore and was SO thrilled to see some non-alcoholic bubbly selections! I felt like I was socially partaking while still staying away from alcohol - so cheers for being conscious that not everyone wants alcohol!!! We came in on a Saturday night, and although we didn't have a reservation, the owner was incredibly accommodating to get us a table in time for the first jazz set. Service was super slow and our reservation was time restricted. Not sure if thats a profitable business model... Our party was only able to have one drink in our 1.5 hour time block since it took 30-40 minutes to get the first round. Cheese plates were good. Overall atmosphere is meh. Anywhere you sit is too close to the live band. when the drumkit is 10 feet away its really hard to hold a conversation with the other people you came with. The music was good but the space is awkward and small for a place with live music. The ladder used to pull things off the wine shelf did not clear the backs of our chairs so we constantly had to "scootch" in for the waitstaff. I've been waiting for this gem to open since April of 2020 and with the pandemic obviously that couldn't happen. However, I am so glad I had the opportunity to go and try it out. We stopped in for a bottle of red wine and some apps on a Monday. The service was amazing, and our server was hilarious. On top of the great service the atmosphere in was impeccable and the design and furniture was so cute! Perfect for a date night. We didn't try any main entrees but the apps that we had *chefs kiss* they were amazing and great portion size. They do live music on Wednesday and Saturdays and looking to expand to Friday's and end goal everyday, make sure you make a reservation because they're booking out far, understandably. The wine tasting stations require a commitment upfront charge to your credit charge. We were told most people run their card for $50 up-front. The shrimp was like they threw a bunch of hot sauce on it. So gross! Our service was shit. We has 2 glasses of wine 5oz pour with 2 appetizers and our bill was $84 before tip. By the bottle, the wine I ordered is under $10 in Chicago. This place charges $15 by the glass. I think whoever runs this place is a total joke and is laughing all the way to the bank. Whether you like wine from California, Oregon, Spain, Italy...they seem to have it all. Our sever was helpful in providing recommendations based on personal preferences.
