Groogy's is pretty cool. I can actually walk there as it's less than a mile from my place. The beer is priced right. I had several of those huge "schooner" glasses they have. I didn't try the food but it seems like your basic dive bar menu with burgers, fries, wings and the like. They have a ton of pool tables, a juke box with some good selections, and friendly bartenders. The crowd was mixed and people were friendly and wiling to chat. My girlfriend and I love this place. The building is so old and seedy looking on the outside but honestly once you come in it's a super comfortable fun atmosphere. I have never had a problem playing in a game or playing doubles if all the pool tables are full and every other customer I've met is super friendly. The wings are the biggest around and it's not very close AND they're not breaded at all, I don't know where they get them from but they're big and delicious. It's either those or the fire burger every time I come in, because that comes with french fries and their french frys are A++ as well. Crystal, Casey, and Leslie are the sweetest bartenders in town and we always try to come in to see them once a week, and Ari is Tempe's ambassador to Europe so if you like to travel he's the one to talk to. Been coming here for a couple years, and they recently re-opened their kitchen with a new chef and new menu. Their food is incredible! I used to come here for some weekend drinks and dinner that was convenient to where I lived, but now it's even better! The chef definitely knows what he's doing, and cares very much about what he makes. The Greek burger was fantastic, and something I had never had anywhere else in the valley. It's worth a stop, even if you don't live nearby. If you live close, there's definitely no excuse to not come by! read more

this isn't going to be a very accurate review, you see, because once i drunkenly stepped out into the sun from FOE (see review: fraternal order of eagles) and made our way to meet our LR pub crawl group halfway between stop 27 and 28, we were a liiiittle. wasted. but i'll do my best. i have driven past the giant, yellow, Groggy's sign (complete with drunken frog) on Apache probably a million times, but never once went in. well, we did this time, and the poor bartender held up like a champ, so that's an automatic two stars. i think on a normal day this place sees no more than five customers at a time. and here, about 40 people show up demanding beer! and food! now! we've got a schedule to keep! for a divesque place with no customers, they had a super cute, college-aged, normal looking bartender. another star for you, groggy's! the actual bar area is kind of small, i would call this place more of a pool hall, cause that's what took up most of this cavernous place. mini pitchers, regular pitchers and are those 32 oz. mugs of beer!? well, there s another star for you. heading to the bathroom and there are two toilets in the ladies room ... but only one stall. you heard me. you walk in, and there's a just a toilet hanging out there in the open, next to an actual stall with a door. huh. report from the BF entailed saloon doors for the one men's stall. (you know how short saloon doors are, right? and by nature, they do not lock...) again, huh. but i won't knock a star for either because it's so random it's pretty great. so, on a completely seemingly baseless scale, four stars for groggy's!! wait, did i add that up right? read more

Not too shabby. Don't let the exterior fool or scare you for that matter. A couple girlfriends of mine were looking for a divey bar to waste time before heading to our destination- and at first sight I won't lie, I was pretty much in the "you have got to be out of your mind' mode when I saw the place but when we went in the place it was actually pretty cool. Very clean, 6 pool tables, darts, a long bar with plenty of high top tables around as well with seating and even a claw machine...you know the ones that you get stuffed animals but this one also had 'adult' toys if you will. Quite comical. The barmaid was pretty nice and funny as well and the patrons well they were interesting people to say the least. Never will I return to Groggy's again, and I love dive bars. The 1 Blue Moon I drank made me sick, bartender ignored me, the other customers made me feel like I was going to be attacked in the parking lot. A place I felt unsafe, and completely disturbed by the whole scene. I had to use the ladies room, what a flippin nightmare, maybe the owners could stop buying new gadgets and gizmos and put a little attention into the most basic thing there is in a bar, the bathroom. Or even better yet, since this is the valley of the sun, maybe just maybe they should invest in new AC units. Too hot in there, that may of been the cause for me feeling ill. Either way this is a warning to the public DO NOT EVER GO, JUST DONT GO. read more

This bar is a nice place to hang out. Very low key, affordable and tasty drinks, friendly staff. Every time I've come here it's not crowded at all, so it's easy to get a drink and play pool. We celebrated a birthday here and had a great time! read more

I like Groggys but it seems like its going in a different direction. The tables went up 25 cents, the AC seems to not run as much as it did, the bathroom urinal is always out of order and the floors are sticky. Finding chalk in the chalk holder is hit or miss. It just seems to be going down hill in a "cheap" way. Its still a great place to shoot pool I just hope it doesn't get any worse. I would love to come back to this review in the future and give Groggys 5 stars but for now 3 will have to do. read more

If you are a female and expect to be served, don't bother stepping foot in here. My roommate and I waited 15 minutes to even have one of 2 bartenders acknowledge is while several groups of men arriving after is were served and we still couldn't get one of them to acknowledge out waiting. However our 2 male companions arrived and we're immediately acknowledged. 2 pitchers of Kiltlifter we're $37.50, hardly a dive bar price, on top of that the beer was room temp and absolutely beyond flat. When my roommate and I attempted to get food, again, we needed one of the men to just look at the bar for service. My roommate and I both tried to flag down BOTH bartenders and could illicit ZERO acknowledgement. Although the food was fine and the burger was surprisingly good the cost of flat warm beer and the uselessness of the bartenders makes it a definite no way would I return.. AND Don't bother calling to complain because when I did (after thinking alright, the food was decent I will order from GrubHub I was MORE than proven wrong). The food was all wrong with a cup of Italian dressing (despite asking for ranch even) spilled all over as the lid was just sitting next to the cup in the box so everything in the bag had it all over it. When I called to complain, I spoke with Natasha who couldn't have had a worse attitude or been ruder. She refused to tell me the owner's name or her own and tried to say she already had when believe me, she had most definitely not. She was belligerent and aggressive basically telling me unless I gave her my number I wouldn't be able to speak with the owner. Generally I have no issues leaving a call back number but her poor attitude made it feel like my name and number would end up on the bathroom wall. After calling the delivery service to complain, who can't issue refunds without restaurant ok, I was told to bring the food in and they would remake the order. No one in their right mind would EVER take that food back to her and expect a reorder that was not treated like a reorder in the movie Waiting. I used a delivery service for a reason so why should I have to pay for that fee and service just to go get it myself with God knows what special add ons. Plus, it's not like I had all night to be acknowledged by her or any other female bartender to get the food. I work in food service and Natasha would not have a job if she worked for me. If this is how she generally treats guests, she definitely has no business with this job or any other position in customer service... especially if she claims to be the manager or is the one to have guest complaints...unless of course you want to have zero returning customers. Worst experience EVER by far. She deserves to be fired. If no or negative stars was an option, believe me, Groggy's would get that read more

The staff are rude and the bartenders think they are the patrons and the patrons should be privileged to be served by them. This place does not want returning customers. I think the owner should really look at the people they have manning the ship bc that same staff does not care if the patrons come back. I live near this little establishment and had seen it when heading towards Mesa so when a group of friends and I were talking about trying out a new bar I suggested Groggy's. I was half-joking, half-serious, but my friend Ben agreed and we headed off. Needless to say, this has become our favorite go-to bar! The crowd is interesting and eclectic and great people watching. It has 6 pool tables which I would say garners 85% of the crowd. The waitresses are awesome and almost always remember what you're ordering and have a habit of coming around just when you need a new pitcher/drink. Speaking of, they have pitchers of Bud Light for $6! No better deal anywhere in Tempe (well, not overrun by undergrads anyway). My friends and I are all from relatively small towns in the midwest and Groggy's makes us all feel at home. We try to go to Groggy's at least once a month or so. Music is via jukebox so as long as someone hasn't played $20 worth of Metallica that makes you want to beat your head against the table you're good. All in all this is a fun dive bar all you midwesterners yearning for a small town bar will quite enjoy! read more

NO MORE CHEAP BEER!!!! was a great place to log in and check e-mail and have a cheap pitcher of beer! BUT not any more they sold the bar and we got charged $17.00 for a pitcher of Summer Shandy WTF. The worse part is the douche behind the bar told me it was $10 after we figured out they changed ownership and asked the new prices of the drinks. Good luck if you dare going in this dive bar that now wants to be a high end drinking establishment. we looked around at what the pool tournament players were drinking and there was a lot of bottled water and PBR's.
