I long ago set aside my question about kimchi being offered and bellied up to our table to enjoy the really lovely Mexican cuisine plated at this restaurant. She-who-must-be obeyed (SHMBO) started off with a truly delightful watermelon margarita and, so delightful was the first one, she later ordered another. The serving was to my thinking a wee bit small. I was happily surprised when SHMBO ordered pork belly tacos accompanied by refried beans and Mexican white rice. I was allowed a taste and concluded this was an order well made. Unlike most Mexican food outings I ordered a birria burrito instead of carnitas. Wow, this burrito was truly impressive and so plentiful that I took half home in my eat-later bag. So, this being our third seating at Zona Cantina + Cocina we were yet again impressed and will return another day. Get there if you're able. read more

My friends and I decided to stop here for lunch after a day of kayaking. She's been here before and said that it was awesome Mexican infusion food. This place is just DA BOMB.com. One of my absolute favorite restaurants. First time we have experienced their smaller menu, and their Happy hour menu. Happy hour menu is huge. We opted for the Tacos!!!! Everyday 11-2 any taco $5 We got the Birria Tacos (my 2nd Fav) The Asada tacos- which were hands down the best EVER! We ended up ordering 2 more! Soooo good. It's like a burnt cheese coating around some really good steak. The Vallartaco which was the mahi, ok so good flavor but same issue as any restaurant in Arizona that serves "fish tacos" there isn't any fish on them. Like literally the size of my pinky finger. it was our first time in and the food was so amazing! i got the chicken plate and it was actually one of the best pieces of grilled chicken I've had at a restaurant, it was super juicy and the marinade was so good. Went during happy hour for a quick bite. Sat outside in the spacious patio. The first table at which they sat us was wobbly so we moved to a better table. Ordered drinks and chips and salsa, both were very good. I wanted a taco 'ala carte' but you can only do that at lunch or taco Tuesdays. Doesn't make sense to me. If you're making the tacos and serving them with rice and beans then why can't you just sell the taco??? So I ordered the shrimp ceviche and my husband had the enchilada. Summertime blues Read below my 5-star review before you negatively judge this one. I've found summers can be difficult at our favorite restaurants and, in the case of Zona in Mesa, they've opened a new location and- possibly- their "A" team members are down in Gilbert supporting that location because last night, we got the second string cooks on our meal. My wife ordered chicken enchiladas- no onions. Our server noted that. Plate arrived COVERED in onions. I mean it was almost deliberate. I ordered favorite of mine - street tacos. 1 each of pork, beef and chicken. It looked appealing but one bite into the first, then the second and then the third were like biting into shoe leather. Inedible. In both our cases, the rice (normally spectacular) was dry and stale. Refried beans had the consistency of water and the chips and guacamole were no better. Stale chips and warm guacamole. We spoke to the manager in a quiet and friendly manner and he killed the bill but we were both disappointed he didn't come back over, give us his card and ask us to seek him out on a return visit. No. We got our server telling us there was no charge. I handed her a generous tip and we left. We want to come back but not until the "A" Team is in the kitchen, chefs who know how to cook and follow instructions about what is wanted and unwanted on dishes. Most important. We were super impressed with Zona! I have heard great things from family and neighbors and decide to check it out ourselves. They have just about anything you could be craving. Tacos, seafood, pasta, burgers, pasta! We had the ahi poke nachos (amazing!), guacamole (so good from what my 3 year old would share with me and she doesn't like guac usually ) and got a variety of everything from the menu. Happy hour is 7 days a week, which was great. We got $5 margaritas Diablo shrimp was SO good! I almost ordered another shrimp platter but the waiter said the Diablo was the best. Let's talk about it. First things first. Who told the owners that having a restaurant with Mexican food, burgers and sushi was a good idea? You can't possibly do them all and do them well. Whoever it was deserves a medal. The exterior is somewhat un-assuming. Located at the corner of a shopping center, you know it's there when you see a very well designed sign above the door. When you walk in, it has a nice layout, easy to navigate. A well stocked large bar is located to the right ad you come in. The dark colors seem to add to the vibe. There are a few TV's located throughout so you can get your sports fix while you eat..or drink. We are visiting from out of state and wanted some good food for a late lunch. Found this on Yelp and took a shot. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Not to intrusive but there when you needed them. We came between dinner and lunch so there was only one waitress, doubling as a bartender. She still managed to do both well. The menu has something for everyone. We started with chips and salsa. The chips were the perfect size and thick enough to hold up to a good run through the salsa without breaking. The salsa had good flavor but not very spicy (perfect for me). I ordered the Quesabirria tacos. They arrived on a wooden chopping block, as did all the food. The presentation was spot on. The tacos were full of delicious flavorful meat and cheese. They did not skimp. The consommé had great flavor and when the taco was dipped into it, the flavor was off the charts. The tortillas were fried perfectly and held together well. The meal came with a side of rice/corn. The rice was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. It also had refried beans. The only flaw in the meal. They were okay, but needed some type of flavor boost. My wife ordered a crunch roll. Even before she took a bite, the amazing presentation blew her away. Very professional, nicely arraigned with plenty of height. We are from Los Angeles and have eaten a lot of sushi. She thinks it might be some of the best she has had. Great crunch and full of flavor. Everything tasted fresh and pulled you in for more. My daughter kept it simple with a cheeseburger kids meal. The burger came with a nice skirt of cheese around it. The meat was juicy and cooked well. The meat to bun ratio was perfect. The bun was perfect and held up well. It also had a nice touch of being branded with the logo. The fries were cooked perfectly and excellently seasoned. Needless to say, none of us could finish our meal. I even took the salsa home. When the bill arrived we were pleasantly surprised that it was under $60 dollars including the sodas. Every time I come here I experience amazing flavors. I got the carne asada plate and my wife got the Diabla shrimp. The sauce on her plate was very very tasty and had some cheese bread that was the best. We tried this place with a group of friends and we all tried different things. Overall we were all super pleased with our dishes. Here's a breakdown of what we got: - carne asada plate - most underwhelming, good but nothing special on the plate - enchilada short rib - a yummy cheesey enchilada sauce! - steak taco (can't remember the fancy name) that's what I got that's pictured it was yummy! We came for the first time to Zona with friends. It was nice to make a reservation since very few places offer those for 4 people plus it was last minute and we got the time we wanted. For such a tucked in location you might be inclined to have second thoughts but once you are in and seated the experience begins. The dining area is tight but yet comfortable to have conversations. I had read earlier reviews and they were right about the servers and how knowledgeable they are about everything on the menu. We started with drinks of course which were awesome. I tried the Moonlight In Jalisco; I'm still smiling! For appetizers we had calamari and Birria egg rolls both delicious. We all enjoyed our main course and our server answered all questions we had. I confess I'm a "foodie" lover and the plating and presentation of Zona's food is impressive. Portions are ample and we all took leftovers home. My girlfriend and I had a glass of wine when we were done and as we visited we all were following some of the stunning plates coming out. They blend the flavors and styles of Mexican and Asian in such a unique flavorful way. Prices are good and we all liked how close this was. You will not be disappointed when you come to Zona. I visited recently with a Meetup group. We received our food quickly, despite having a large group. The wait staff was friendly and efficient; our glasses were always full. I couldn't decide what to order so I really appreciated the waitress' suggestions. The shrimp, sauce, rice and cheese bread were absolutely fabulous. It's a big portion allowing me to have leftovers for lunch. Everyone's dishes looked good and I didn't hear any complaints. 3.5 Taco Tuesday for 4. Fast seating and friendly waitress. Pitcher of margaritas to start. $32 = 4 small glasses, mostly ice. 2 shots grand marnier, $20. So, 20 each for 2 small Cadillac Margaritas heavy ice seems a bit steep. Chips and salsa are not complimentary but tasty. Tacos@ $5 each- fried fish: flaky yummy tilapia with balanced breading, plenty of cabbage but lacked enough sauce and salt. Quesabirria: flavorful beef and good amount melted cheese. Really liked the crisped tortilla although it was not fried in consommé . Little ramekins of Consommé perfect. Korean: flavorful and delicious according to sis. Accompanying sauce though was extremely spicy. Carne asada: just okay but nothing special according to hubs. 3 times, tacos we did not order were brought to our table. The third time, just one taco, hubs said he would keep and set it down on the table. A few minutes later the server came back for the taco letting us know that it was indeed ordered by someone else. She then delivered to the right table. Weird and not okay for the rightful taco owner to get a taco that was actually delivered to another table. Total: about 140 + tip. read more

I recently dined at ZONA and I must say, I was extremely disappointed with the experience. We have been here many times, and understand that the prices are too high, but the food has been good so we've never complained. Firstly, they charge $5 for chips and salsa, which I guess is fine to recoup some of those costs, but when we received the bill the waitress had charged us for $5 for every basket of chips and salsa we received! We were charged $15 for 3 chips/salsa and a random $3 for chips, not to mention the 3% "service fee" they tack onto the bill. Total of over $20 of unwarranted charges. Their food is already overpriced, now they're just straight up gouging customers. No thanks Zona. In addition, their wait staff is wildly inconsistent. The waitress we had was unfriendly and obviously less than honest, and didn't crack a smile once time as she provided her soul-less service. Despite the poor service and attempted overcharge, I must admit that the food at ZONA is actually quite good. The dishes were flavorful and well-prepared, which made the overall experience slightly more bearable. However, the poor service and dishonesty of the staff greatly overshadowed any positive aspects of the meal. In conclusion, I cannot in good conscience recommend this joint due to the terrible service and dishonest practices I experienced. While the food may be delicious, it is not worth putting up with such unprofessionalism. I hope the management takes steps to improve their staff and practices in the future. read more
