You need to order by the front and pay first The sausage calzone is not really my thing. Way too many unchopped garlic(like half of the content). I thought it would be pieces of round cut-sausage but it's more of ground meat with some kind of white sauce. It gets really heavy after a few bites. The pickled banana pepper isn't helping the heaviness either. But others seem to like it. The four cheese pizza is also pretty basic. We love having groundlings right down the street and have tried many of their menu items. This evening we ordered A Fungus Amungus-pistachio pesto, pecorino, fresh mozzarella, oyster mushrooms and beer sausage. Our friends ordered You Get More Beautiful Everyday- tomato sauce, Parmesan, mozzarella, soppresatta salami, roast garlic, hot honey. Both are delicious. We also love the calzones, our grandson went nuts for the s'mores one last summer I can't wait to take him back this summer. We had the Smelly Nelly with mushrooms and 3 different cheeses. The crust was superb. Thin and charred on the bottom, with a nice "chew" that tasted like it had some sourdough in it. We got half smelly Nelly (AMAZING) and half pepperoni (also amazing) we had to do all red sauce to do this combo. It was still so so so good. We got a ride of ranch not expecting it to be the dill ranch and it was intense with the dill flavoring. They had a little live band playing tonight. Beautiful view of the river. It's been decades since I have left no tip. Decades. The service was unbelievably horrible. We sit down time goes by, and finally a gal stops by and says OH?! Can I get you some waters? Yes please, we'd also like a drink, she asks what would you like? A Bloody Mary please, hubs says cider, he gets his cider, comes back says no to Bloody Mary, bartender's on break, I can do beer and wine for now..okie, I'll have a cider then get a drink..our third person arrives asks for a drink, sorry can't do that, bartender on break..ok. We'll wait...forever apparently. Were there over an hour no bartender. No drinks. The hostesses did their best. Other patrons also coming up for a drink. Nope. Asked for a couple extras on the side for the pizzas, nope. Little guy helping in kitchen came and finally brought them. After asking, asked for some salt, nope, flag down a hostess again. Oh yeah, finally brings it when almost done. NO SERVICE, NONE..NO DRINKS, NONE. The guest that took us out to dinner never even got anything but water. Guess we should be grateful for that. Not only will we never go back..I won't recommend to any of the tourists passing thru my shop. We were in Gold Beach for work, and since it's such a small town, there aren't a ton of dining options and most places only have "okay" reviews. The last time we were here, we tried another spot with decent ratings, but the experience was the total opposite of what we expected... it was pretty bad. So, going into this place, my expectations weren't high. But the reviews looked solid, and honestly, it's hard to mess up pizza right? Well, I'm happy to say this spot totally delivered. We ordered a simple cheese, a pepperoni, and what I think was their combo (can't remember the exact name), and every single one was delicious. The crust was thin and crispy on the bottom with just the right amount of chew, and it had great flavor. The toppings were all fresh and balanced perfectly. The staff was awesome and super friendly, made great recommendations, and genuinely made us feel welcome. Overall, this was one of those unexpected finds that totally exceeded expectations. 10 out of 10 recommend if you're ever in Gold Beach and craving some really good pizza! read more

Food is great. However, the service is not. My wife and I came in at 5:30 for dinner. There were 3 employees standing around, 1 cleaning a table, the other 2 just standing there talking. We waited for atleast 5 mins before a young girl came over with water. No Hi, No Welcome to Groundings not even a smile. She said let me know when you want to order, could barely here her. Then took our order without writing it down with a few minor changes and screwed it up. We were the only patrons in there. I know I am at s Pizza/Bar but someone needs to teach the staff how to be more inviting and pleasant. The other issues, we are trying to enjoy ourselves and there is rap music coming from the cooking area. The Smelly Nelly, Arch Porter and Pale Ale were good. The pizza was delicious. The service was horrible. We were not greeted at the door and had to figure out to seat ourselves. The bartender obviously was very tired, busy, and /or had a major life event on her mind. The weight of the world appeared on her shoulders. No greeting with a smile when I looked at her and smiled. Arrived at 7:10 and saw that they close at 8:00. Not a good sign. Eventually another lovely server arrived. We never saw her again. It took over an hour to get our pizza. It was not overly busy and tables were clearing as they were closing. When the pizza arrived, we got a box to go as we wanted to catch the sunset. The pricing was decent. 12 oz beers $4. Pizza $23. Ranch dressing $2??? Wt? No mention on the menu that we'd be charged. A slight turn off given such poor service. The kitschy bathroom signs and photos were cute initially but then I just thought they were crass and dirty given our experience. And overall the place seemed a bit dirty and an off vibe. Very disappointed. It's rare that I give reviews like this especially from places reviewed highly. Just a bad night? I'll give them that and hope they can do better for others. read more

The pizzas here are delicious! My favourites are Smelly Nelly, Bill the Gravel Guy, and Naked & Famous. Their pizzas are truly creative and unique. They also have amazing bartenders. Sam is a true mixologist. Her margaritas have to be the best that I've tasted, anywhere. She uses a bespoke mixer that she created herself, and it's incredible. The people here, like the atmosphere, are warm and welcoming. There's a great bar, screens with sports on, as well as separate areas with tables for families. There are also outdoor tables looking out over the Rogue River - magical in the summer. read more

I buy pizza here once per week. I called for a pick up pizza on Monday for the football game. The last pizza was very dry and burnt. I explained that to the rude young man who answered the phone. I stressed that the last pizza was almost ruined for us between the burnt edges, all the way around, and the lack of sauce to provide taste and moisture. When I got there, the young man was unhelpful when I told him I was not going to pay for extra sauce. That I had previously explained the last was too dry and to ensure this one had enough sauce. I eat there a lot, I just had their meatballs 4 days ago! I am disappointed in the service and the pizza. This place used to be better, even when they were swamped in tourist season. The atmosphere was good, funny pictures on the walls, a nice mural with the Groundling Pizza slogan - "unsophisticated pizza 4 unsophisticated people". We ordered 4 different pizzas, the Hawaiian with red sauce and one regularly, the pepperoni, and the milk and honey. All were good, but my mom thought the cheese on the Hawaiian was bleu cheese and didn't like the taste. (I wanna say it's actually Gorgonzola?) We also ordered the calzone and the dessert calzone. THESE ARE GAME CHANGERS!! I live out of the area and will be dreaming about the dessert calzone for weeks. If they weren't closed on Monday I probably would have insisted we went back to get another one before we travel back to the Bay Area. It was delicious how they combined Nutella and marshmallow fluff with the torch of a pizza oven inside a pizza bread topped with graham crackers. The savory calzone was also delicious. I'm not sure what the people of Gold Beach did in order to be blessed with the presence of an elite wood fired pizza joint like this, but don't sleep on Groundlings, this is the place to go. Wow, Wow, Wow!!! After eating at this pizza joint, I became so excited to write this review. Their pizza is 12/10ths legit, and the Head Honcho is from Brooklyn, need I say more. They bake all their pies in a wood-fired oven and as soon as you open the door you are quickly hit with that wood-fire aroma. We had driven a bit looking for a pizza dinner as it was raining at our campsite and we initially went North towards Port Orford and then on to Bandon with no luck and decided to try out Gold Beach and we are beyond thankful that we came to this establishment. The views from the tables were spectacular and we got to witness some seals playing around outside our windows. I love funny wall art in the bathrooms and this place did not disappoint in fact I'd put them in the top 3 places I've been to for bathroom wall art. Back to their pies... We ordered 7-pies and they were all amazing. I am not a pepperoni guy at all usually opting for a Margherite as I am a traditionalist. They put some ridiculously delicious hot honey on their Pepperoni pizza and it made all the difference. This was by far and away the best pepperoni pizza I've ever experienced. We also ordered the Milk & Honey Pie, a 1/2 & 1/2 Margherite / Hawaiian, and a Balls of Fire, a You Get more Beautiful Everyday, Mighe Lon, and a Fungus Amungus. Looking back I guess we got so caught up in eating these delicious pies that I skimped on the photo diary. I apologize for that. My gf was both elated that we ate here along with being sad. The iced tea hit the spot after our three hour drive through the mountains. I think the mildly conservative crowd would be a bit off-put by the decorations, especially in the bathrooms. It was gutsy but I suppose some folks embrace it. You can't beat the view. We sat on the patio (where dogs are welcome) watching a very popular day for steelhead trout fishing on the Rogue River. Good artisan wood fired pizza but very spotty service. Living in Gold Beach we all want restaurants to succeed. This place has good pizza, a great location on the river but we have experienced some very poor dining service episodes. This most recent episode in mid March included a dine-in attempt during a low demand period at 5pm. For the third consecutive visit the service was awful. This time we waited over 45 minutes for a salad and a pizza and never got the salad. Staff is mostly indifferent. We observed a few guests at differing tables walk out due to a server never visiting their table. Oh yeah...One can't get mixed drinks when bartender takes a break? Sad to see an establishment with a good food offering fall down so badly on service. Not the first time either. Buyer beware. Take out might be a better option but this style pizza seems best when eaten freshly baked. Hoping this poor review reaches the owner and staff is given better direction.
