First place we tried when we got to Brookings. Great food and service. Came here with the family. We got 2 pizzas that were shareable sizes. We got a margherita and all meat. Both really good and made in their stone oven. We also got the calmari for appetizers. Calamari cooked perfectly, not rubbery. Light batter, crispy, and seasoned really well that gave it great flavor. Others in the group ordered a clam chowder bread bowl, chicken Parmesan, fish & chips and shrimp & chips. The overall consensus was good. Casual atmosphere and perfect location. It's at the boardwalk near an arcade. During the day, there's also ice cream and coffee nearby. My husband and I moved to gold beach a couple of years ago and are slowly making our way through all of the amazing restaurants on the coast, this was our first time trying Zola's on the water. We came down to Brookings to take care of some business and decided to stop in for lunch and a drink afterwards. We weren't especially hungry so we ordered our usual favorites (clam chowder for me and steamer clams for the fellow) that combo usually helps us decide whether or not we want to return, without breaking the bank on a new spot. Our server was delightful, she was kind and attentive without being overbearing. Our order took a little longer than expected for what we ordered but we didn't mind, we had some nice blackberry cider they had on tap to tide us over. I was a little disappointed when our meals came out and I didn't get a slice of bread with my bowl of clam chowder like the fellow did with his steamers, but we were able to buy a half batard for $5 and that was perfect for us to split. It came out warm with a side of butter and complimented the chowder much nicer than the oyster crackers they originally brought out would have. In fact I recommend getting the bread if you order the chowder, it almost stole the show. The chowder was delicious, could've been warmer but still very tasty, the potatoes were cut super thin, and the clams were plump and tender and tasted fresh, they did add bacon but not in overwhelming amounts, and I thought it was spiced perfectly. I only added a few shakes of red pepper flakes to finish it. The fellow thought his steamer clams/mussels were marvelous, with a very flavorful broth, and he loved the fact that he was allowed to mix them. They made a good first impression on us, we will definitely be returning for dinner and ordering a couple of pizzas and perhaps a salad as well. I checked the menu first and then got there at opening. Very nice staff agreed to sit me in the patio in a sunny seat with a nice marina view. While waiting for my excellent cod fish and chips I walked around inside and out. Even saw a sea lion and several pelicans. Food arrived in a timely manner. Since the new ownership took over, this place is definitely not the same. We visited on a busy summer day, and the wait staff situation was horrible--there were only two people waiting tables for the entire place. Because they were so understaffed, our food sat around waiting to be delivered and came to the table cold. The wings were completely soggy and cold from sitting in the buffalo sauce, which was incredibly disappointing because the food itself actually tasted great. The wait staff seemed both completely overwhelmed and entirely careless. Interestingly, they had plenty of bus girls working, and honestly, those girls were more helpful than the servers. Management needs to get them trained to help wait tables quickly, because right now, the leadership is totally off. To make matters worse, the restroom was filthy. It was unclean to the point that we could actually smell the stench of urine while sitting at our table. First time here. Went in for dinner on a Sunday night. There was a 20 minute wait. Our server Chad was super friendly and attentive! We ordered rockfish tacos, calamari salad, and chicken Caeser wrap. Everything was very good but certainly expensive. The Caeser wrap was $20 and didn't come with anything. I went here today for lunch before leaving town. It was slower than usual, so service and food were very prompt. I ordered the 5 alarm pizza my son ordered the Hawaiian pizza. The 5 alarm is not very spicy to me, but does have Serrano peppers. It was on the greasy side and didn't have much structure in terms of how I like my pizza. The Hawaiian pizza was good though. We sat outside on the deck area since it wasn't too cold. It's nice being outside while eating, and their deck area is covered, so you can eat there even if it's raining. I've been here twice, and the food and service are always amazing. The only reason I decided not to give 5 stars is the wait and price increases. If you are really hungry and you plan to order a pizza, I rec you find a different place to do so. It will take about an hour, and that is with the place only half busy. BUT the pizza is delicious once you get it, so for many I think it is worth the wait. The waitstaff is as friendly and attentive as can be. We find ourselves back at Zola's craving for pasta, chowder and pizza. We came by for lunch on a Sunday. Seating was readily available than being here on a busy day like Friday or Saturday. We opted to sit outside on their covered patio during a warmer winter day. Menu is limited at lunch so I begged my bf for us to come back at dinner and get some takeout. The good: - Big Peppa Pizza was excellent. The dough was baked right and the toppings were really tasty. We were kinda kicking ourselves for not getting a bigger size than a 12" but it was a good serving for 2. - Clam chowder bread bowl was a perfect hit this time. Perfect ratio of clams and potatoes, tasty creamy soup base and the bread bowl is freshly baked. This is something I would eat over and over again if I lived near here. My bf said it's among his Top 3 favorite clam chowders he's ever had, along with popular Bay Area spots, Scoma's (San Francisco) and Spud Point (Bodega Bay). - Calamari, also tasty. Tender squid with subtle crisp and a hint of curry powder (?). - Creamy Tomato Soup, you can tell it's house made. It tastes fresh, no bitter aftertaste, well seasoned. - Rigatoni Bolognese, al dente pasta with meat sauce, possibly the tomato soup and pasta sauce are made from the same house made base. I ordered this because it was their Sunday special but I prefer their spaghetti and meatballs or other pasta options which unfortunately aren't available for lunch. - House salad, I cannot believe how fresh the salad greens were. The entire night I was in disbelief and boasting about how great the salad greens were. We visited a few grocery stores around the area prior to ordering takeout and their greens were wilted and sad but Zola's, they were like picked from a garden that same day. I still can't get over it. The not so good: Our server dropped the calamari all over our table, didn't apologize or say anything, didn't replace the dish. To not ruin our lunch, we gave her a pass, just instilled in our heads that she was probably new to the service industry and didn't know what to say or do. Will I be back? Absolutely. I would like to try all the items on the menu eventually, especially their pizzas and baked options. I would also give a verdict of food consistency after a few more visits since our very first visit experience here was also not so great but good enough for us to return. Balance- the portions were small especially for the price, I follow a Quality+Quantity/Price formula, the quality was mid, the quantity was small, and the price was high. $20 for a bread bowl of clam chowder, the bowl was smaller than most and filled less than half way? Fish and chips where it's a single piece of fish with a ton of thick fried batter, pancake thick, burned on one end. It doesn't make up for a lack of FISH. Cleanliness+ nothing special, it wasn't dirty but also not spotless, came right as they opened so kind of expected a little cleaner, but not a problem. Deliciousness- though the batter tasted sweet and was thick like a pancake the fish was old, greasy, and way fishier than the type of fish should have been, my stomach was cramping all night and the next day, assuming it was left out or too old to be served. The clam chowder had clam in it, canned I believe, didn't taste fresh, but it was heavily masked with ham, bacon, and a remarkable amount of dill, overpowering anything else. While in Brookings for the weekend we stopped by Zola's for dinner. Our food and drinks were outstanding and our server/bartender Aiyana was absolutely fantastic! The atmosphere is incredibly chill and the menu selection is outstanding. Definitely try the rock fish tacos! They were sooo good! This will be our go to restaurant/bar whenever we visit town. The sad part was the pizza was a little burnt and just warm. The food wasn't hot. We came from out of the area and expected a wait, but not this long for food. Zolas on the water has one thing going for it, it is constantly bad on all counts. Starting with the service, our waiter acted like it was a chore to deal with us, had to be flagged down to get anything, even a refresh on a glass of water. Next, the food, the pizza was just drowning in grease, the toppings were close to nonexistent, and had the taste of a dominos pizza for 3-4x the cost. The burger was scorched on one side and steam cooked on the other, the fries were completely unseasoned, and overall tasted like a cheap frozen burger from the freezer isle. The experience at this restaurant was completely subpar, and I could not in good conscience recommend this restaurant to anyone. Just one more example of subpar Brookings restaurants. read more

My husband & I ate here 6 years ago...we were seated outside during cold weather & windy. 90 minutes went by and we still hadn't received our order. Turns out our order was misplaced & forgotten about. ‍ The mgr came out to apologize and offered us a complimentary dinner, but it was cold & horrible. TODAY,we decided to try it again...but just as bad. It took 45 minutes to get our food, when my husband asked our waitress (after 39 minutes wait) how much longer, she snapped: "the restaurant is packed you'll get it soon!" And stomped off. We ended the delicious meal with the most amazing Key lime Pie that melted in my mouth! I am already salivating to go back for more. Ask for the hottest sauce in the Galaxy. It totally took me by surprise. It was honestly hotter than anything I had ever tasted in the past bar none. The staff were friendly and said sure. Clean and spacious, lots of beer selections. We ordered a few pizzas. Thin crust, and crispy. The kids asked for chicken strips. Wood fired pizza comes out in minutes. Very thin crust and I don't normally eat the crust; but I proudly ate the crust on this pizza (AKA "pizza bones." If thick crust is more your thing; you can get that too. We had the Mediterranean veggie. It was a tad salty between the pesto and the kalamatas, and a tad garlicky with the extra garlic. I think I'll just go for the Margherita pizza next time. Service was friendly and attentive. Our server's name was Joey. He recommended the chowder and said he was from Seattle but said Zola's chowder was better. The chowder was very good. But be warned it has pieces of thick cut bacon if pork isn't your thing. This is mostly a pizza restaurant, but they have Sammie's, lots of fish entrees and salads as well. Interesting tidbit if you are from Sacramento. One of the pizzas is called "Sactown Jonesy, and is names for a former worker, called Jonesy who hailed from Sacramento. It has barbecue sauce, 3 cheese blend, chicken, bacon, jalapeño, red onion and a "stoopid sauce" drizzle. It's moderately hot but not as hot as their "5 Alarm Pizza with habenero, serrano and jalapeño peppers. Zola's also has a beautiful bar with a large selection of spirits and an ever changing variety of beer and cider on tap, and is is pet-friendly and has outside tables with a view of the harbor and fire pits. read more

Traveling the coast and stopped in for a late dinner with our kiddos. At Zola's you're treated like family. It was close to closing and they told us to come on in and not to worry about the time. They apologized for being out of chicken strips (our kids' favorite), and comped is chicken wings. Their pizza is delicious. So sad! The service was absolutely horrible! My family and I used to love this place! Every time we come to Brookings we make a point to stop and get food at Zolas. Guess it's like they say, all good things must come to an end... The run down: We ordered a pizza to go, but upon arrival, we changed our minds and asked if we could dine in as our kids (age 2 and 3) needed to use the bathroom and we thought it might be nice to have a drink and relax before hitting the road home. They told us "we could not sit as we had already ordered to go" keep in mind we were paying customers and had already spent over $45. The manager informed me that this was their new policy and that they would not be able to accommodate us, even though there was plenty of seating.
